Leptogenesis in Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Models

We analyze lepton asymmetry induced in the decay of right--handed neutrinos in a class of minimal left--right symmetric models. In these models, which assume low energy supersymmetry, the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is proportional to the charged lepton mass matrix. As a result, lepton asymmetry is calculable in terms of 9 parameters, all measurable in low energy neutrino experiments. By solving the Boltzmann equations numerically we show that adequate baryon asymmetry is generated in these models. This however places significant constraints on the light neutrino parameters. We find tan^2θ_{12} = m_1/m_2 and θ_{13} = (0.01 - 0.07) for the neutrino oscillation angles, and β= α+ π/2 for the Majorana phases.

Split Supersymmetry from Anomalous U(1)

We present a scenario wherein the anomalous U(1) D-term of string origin triggers supersymmetry breaking and generates naturally a Split Supersymmetry spectrum. When the gaugino and the Higgsino masses (which are of the same order of magnitude) are set at the TeV scale, we find the scalar masses to be in the range (10^6 - 10^8) GeV. The U(1) D-term provides a small expansion parameter which we use to explain the mass and mixing hierarchies of quarks and leptons. Explicit models utilizing exact results of N = 1 suersymmetric gauge theories consistent with anomaly constraints, fermion mass hierarchy, and supersymmetry breaking are presented.

Model of Geometric Neutrino Mixing

Current neutrino oscillation data from solar, atmospheric, and reactor experiments are consistent with the neutrino mixing matrix elements taking values sin^2θ_{12} = 1/3, sin^2θ_{23} = 1/2, and sin^2θ_{13}=0. We present a class of renormalizable gauge models which realize such a geometric mixing pattern naturally. These models, which are based on the non--Abelian discrete symmetry A_4, place significant restrictions on the neutrino mass spectrum, which we analyze. It is shown that baryogenesis via leptogenesis occurs quite naturally, with a single phase (determined from neutrino oscillation data) appearing in leptonic asymmetry and in neutrinoless double beta decay. Such predicted correlations would provide further tests of this class of models.

A Unified Framework for Symmetry Breaking in SO(10)

A new SO(10) unified model is proposed based on a one step breaking of SO(10) to the Standard Model gauge group $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)_Y$ using a single 144 of Higgs. The symmetry breaking occurs when the SU(5) 24-plet component of 144 develops a vacuum expectation value. Further, it is possible to obtain from the same 144 a light Higgs doublet necessary for electro-weak symmetry breaking using recent ideas of string vacua landscapes and fine tuning. Thus the breaking of SO(10) down to $SU(3)_C\times U(1)_{em}$ can be accomplished with a single Higgs. We analyze this symmetry breaking pattern in the nonsupersymmetric as well as in the supersymmetric SO(10) model. In this scenario masses of the quarks and leptons arise via quartic couplings. We show that the resulting mass pattern is consistent with experimental data, including neutrino oscillations. The model represents an alternative to the currently popular grand unified scenarios.

Neutrino Masses and Mixings in a Minimal SO(10) Model

We consider a minimal formulation of SO(10) Grand Unified Theory wherein all the fermion masses arise from Yukawa couplings involving one 126 and one 10 of Higgs multiplets. It has recently been recognized that such theories can explain, via the type-II seesaw mechanism, the large ν_μ- ν_τmixing as a consequence of b-tau unification at the GUT scale. In this picture, however, the CKM phase δlies preferentially in the second quadrant, in contradiction with experimental measurements. We revisit this minimal model and show that the conventional type-I seesaw mechanism generates phenomenologically viable neutrino masses and mixings, while being consistent with CKM CP violation. We also present improved fits in the type-II seesaw scenario and suggest fully consistent fits in a mixed scenario.

Dihedral Families of Quarks, Leptons and Higgs Bosons

We consider finite groups of small order for family symmetry. It is found that the binary dihedral group Q_6, along with the assumption that the Higgs sector is of type II, predicts mass matrix of a nearest neighbor interaction type for quarks and leptons. We present a supersymmetric model based on Q_6 with spontaneously induced CP phases. The quark sector contains 8 real parameters with one independent phase to describe the quark masses and their mixing. Predictions in the |V_{ub}|-bar{eta}, |V_{ub}|-sin 2 beta(phi_1) and |V_{ub}|-|V_{td}/V_{ts}| planes are given. The lepton sector contains also 9 parameters. A normal as well as an inverted spectrum of neutrino masses is possible, and we compute V_{e3}. We find that |V_{e3}|^2 > 10^{-4} in the case of a normal spectrum, and |V_{e3}|^2 >8 10^{-4} in the case of an inverted spectrum. It is also found that Q_6 symmetry forbids all Baryon number violating terms of d=4, and the contributions to EDMs from the A terms vanish in this model.

Lepton Flavor Violation within a realistic SO(10)/G(224) Framework

Lepton flavor violation (LFV) is studied within a realistic unified framework, based on supersymmetric SO(10) or an effective G(224) = SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)^c symmetry, that successfully describes (i) fermion masses and mixings, (ii) neutrino oscillations, as well as (iii) CP violation. LFV emerges as an important prediction of this framework, bringing no new parameters, barring the few SUSY parameters, which are assumed to be flavor-universal at M^*>= M_{GUT}. We study LFV (i.e. μ-> eγ, τ-> μγ, τ-> eγand μN -> e N) within this framework by including contributions both from the presence of the right handed neutrinos as well as those arising from renormalization group running in the post-GUT regime (M^* to M_{GUT}). Typically the latter, though commonly omitted in the literature, is found to dominate. Our predicted rates for μ-> eγshow that while some choices of (m_o, m_{1/2}) are clearly excluded by the current empirical limit, this decay should be seen with an improvement of the current sensitivity by a factor of 10--100, even if sleptons are moderately heavy (<= 800 GeV, say). For the same reason, μ-e conversion (μN -> e N) should show in the planned MECO experiment. Implications of WMAP and (g-2)_μ-measurements are noted, as also the significance of the measurement of parity-odd asymmetry in the decay of polarized μ^+ into e^+ γ.

Fermion Mass Hierarchy and Electric Dipole Moments

We show that in supersymmetric models with a gauged flavor symmetry explaining the hierarchy of fermion masses and mixings, the electron, muon, neutron and the deuteron acquire sizable electric dipole moments (EDM) through loop diagrams involving the flavor gaugino/gauge boson near the Planck scale. These EDMs are proportional to the phases in the fermion Yukawa couplings and are typically much larger than the neutrino seesaw induced EDM for the leptons. In a popular class of models based on anomalous U(1) flavor symmetry of string origin, we find d_e ~ (10^{-26}-10^{-27}) e cm, d_μ~ (10^{-24}-10^{-26}) e cm, d_n ~ 10^{-27} e cm, and d_D ~ (10^{-26}-10^{-27}) e cm, which are within reach of next generation experiments.

Theory of Neutrinos

After a brief overview of the present knowledge of neutrino masses and mixing, we summarize what can be learned about physics beyond the standard model from the various proposed neutrino experiments. We also comment on the impact of the experiments on our understanding of the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe as well as what can be learned from some experiments outside the domain of neutrinos.

Perturbative Unification and Higgs Boson Mass Bounds

Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model generally give a theoretical upper limit on the lightest Higgs boson mass which may be uncomfortably close to the current experimental lower bound of $m_h$ > 114 GeV. Here we show ways in which this upper limit on $m_h$ can be relaxed substantially in the perturbative regime, while maintaining the successful unification of gauge couplings as observed in the minimal scenario. A class of models is presented, which includes new vector-like matter with the quantum numbers of the 5, 5-bar and singlet representations of SU(5) and having Yukawa couplings (κ) to the usual Higgs doublet $H_u$. This new matter transforms non-trivially under a "lateral" SU(N) gauge symmetry, which enables the new Yukawa couplings κto be sizable, even larger than the top-quark Yukawa coupling, and still be perturbative at all momenta up to the unification scale of 10^{16} GeV. We find that, consistent with low energy constraints, $m_h$ can be raised to values as large as 200 - 300 GeV.

Tying in CP and Flavor Violations with Fermion Masses and Neutrino Oscillations

In this paper we explore the possibility that (a) fermion masses, (b) neutrino oscillations, (c) CP non-conservation and (d) flavor violations get intimately linked to each other within supersymmetric grand unification based on SO(10) or an effective G(224) = SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)^c symmetry. We extend the framework proposed previously by Babu, Pati and Wilczek (BPW) which successfully described fermion masses and neutrino oscillations, to include CP violation. Assuming flavor universal SUSY breaking parameters at M^* >~ M_{GUT}, and that CP violation arises through phases in the fermion mass matrices, we show how the presence of GUT threshold induces new and calculable CP and flavor violations. Including SM and SUSY contributions, we find that the BPW framework can correctly account for the observed flavor and/or CP violations in Δm_K, Δm_{B_d}, S(B_d-> J/ψK_S) and ε_K. While SUSY-contribution is small (<~ few%) for the first three quantities, that to ε_K is sizable (~ 20-25%) and negative (as desired) compared to that of the SM. The model predicts S(B_d-> ϕK_S) to be in the range +(0.65-0.73), close to the SM prediction. The model yields Re(ε'/ε)_{SUSY}\approx +(4-14)\times 10^{-4}; the relevance of this contribution can be assessed only when the associated matrix elements are known reliably. The model also predicts that the electric dipole moments of the neutron and the electron should be discovered with improvements in current limits by factors of 10 to 100.

Chiral Gauge Models for Light Sterile Neutrinos

We construct a family of simple gauge models in which three sterile neutrinos become naturally light by virtue of a generalized seesaw mechanism involving a chiral gauge symmetry. Examples where the chiral gauge group is SU(5)', SU(7)', SU(3)' and/or their descendants are presented. A unified model based on SO(10) x SO(10)' which embeds many of these models is constructed wherein three light sterile neutrinos are just as natural as the three ordinary neutrinos. These gauge models have relevance to current neutrino oscillation data, including the LSND anomaly.

Constraining Z' From Supersymmetry Breaking

We suggest and analyze a class of supersymmetric Z' models based on the gauge symmetry U(1)_x = x Y - (B-L), where Y is the Standard Model hypercharge. For 1 < x < 2, the U(1)_x D-term generates positive contributions to the slepton masses, which is shown to solve the tachyonic slepton problem of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB). The resulting models are very predictive, both in the SUSY breaking sector and in the Z' sector. We find M_Z' = (2-4) TeV and the Z-Z' mixing angle ξ= 0.001. Consistency with symmetry breaking and AMSB phenomenology renders the Z' "leptophobic", with Br(Z' -> e^+ e^-) = (1-1.6)% and Br(Z' -> q q-bar) = 44%. The lightest SUSY particle is either the neutral Wino or the sneutrino in these models.

Simple Model for (3+2) Neutrino Oscillations

We formulate a set of naturalness criteria for sterile neutrinos (ν') to be light, needed for reconciling the LSND neutrino anomaly with the other neutrino data. A light sterile neutrino becomes as natural as the light active neutrinos if it carries quantum numbers of a chiral gauge symmetry broken at the TeV scale. The simplest such theory is shown to be an SU(2) gauge theory with the ν' transforming as a spin 3/2 multiplet. We develop this model and show that it leads naturally to the phenomenologically viable (3+2) neutrino oscillation scheme. We also present next-to-minimal models for light sterile neutrinos based on a chiral U(1) gauge symmetry.

TeV-Scale Horizontal Symmetry and the Slepton Mass Problem of Anomaly Mediation

We propose a new scenario for solving the tachyonic slepton mass problem of anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking models with a non-Abelian horizontal gauge symmetry broken at the TeV scale. A specific model based on SU(3)_{H} horizontal symmetry is presented wherein the sleptons receive positive mass-squared from the asymptotically free SU(3)_{H} gauge sector. Approximate global symmetries present in the model strongly suppress flavor changing processes induced by the horizontal vector gauge bosons. The model predicts m_{h} < 120 GeV for the lightest Higgs boson mass, tan{beta} nearly equal to 4, and M_V = 1-4 TeV for the SU(3)_{H} gauge boson masses. The lightest SUSY particle is found to be the neutral Wino, which is a candidate for cold dark matter.

CP violation in polarized $b \to d l^+ l^-$: A Detailed Standard Model Analysis

The electroweak CP violating rate asymmetries in the decay $b \to d l^+ l^-$ are reexamined in detail and updated. In particular, the rate asymmetries are studied when one of the final state leptons is polarised. We find an estimate for the asymmetry of (5-15)% in the polarised decay spectrum which is close to known results for the unpolarised case. Interestingly, in the region separating the $ρ-ω$ and $c \bar c$ resonances, which is also theoretically cleanest, the polarised contribution to the asymmetry is larger than the unpolarised result. A $3σ$ signal for direct CP violation, requires about 10^{10} $B \bar B$ pairs at a B factory. In general these results indicate an asymmetric contribution from the individual polarisation states to the unpolarised CP asymmetry; an atribute for any new physics searches.

Anomalous U(1) symmetry and lepton flavor violation

We show that in a large class of models based on anomalous U(1) symmetry which addresses the fermion mass hierarchy problem, leptonic flavor changing processes are induced that are in the experimentally interesting range. The flavor violation occurs through the renormalization group evolution of the soft SUSY breaking parameters between the string scale and the U(1)_A breaking scale. We derive general expressions for the evolution of these parameters in the presence of higher dimensional operators. Several sources for the flavor violation are identified: flavor-dependent contributions to the soft masses from the U(1)_A gaugino, scalar mass corrections proportional to the trace of U(1)_A charge, non-proportional A-terms from vertex corrections, and the U(1)_A D-term. Quantitative estimates for the decays μ-> e γand τ-> μγare presented in supergravity models which accommodate the relic abundance of neutralino dark matter.
