Asymptotic Solutions of Radiating Stars

We investigate the evolution of the surface of radiating stars by studying the asymptotic behaviour of exact solutions initiated via the stationary boundary condition. This boundary condition leads to a master equation in the form of a second-order nonlinear differential equation that describes the evolution of the scale factor. We examine this master equation by introducing a set of dimensionless dynamical variables, motivated by similar approaches in cosmological settings. We derive the stationary points of the system in the presence of charge and a cosmological constant. Furthermore, we construct criteria for the initial conditions in order that the asymptotic limit approaches a static geometry.

A group theoretic approach to shear-free radiating stars

A systematic analysis of the junction condition, relating the radial pressure with the heat flow in a shear-free relativistic radiating star, is undertaken. This is a highly nonlinear partial differential equation in general. We obtain the Lie point symmetries that leave the boundary condition invariant. Using a linear combination of the symmetries, we transform the junction condition into ordinary differential equations. We present several new exact solutions to the junction condition. In each case we can identify the exact solution with a Lie point generator. Some of the solutions obtained satisfy the linear barotropic equation of state. As a special case we regain conformally flat models which were found previously. Our analysis highlights the interplay between Lie algebras, nonlinear differential equations and application to relativistic astrophysics.

The Deng algorithm in higher dimensions

We extend an algorithm of Deng in spherically symmetric spacetimes to higher dimensions. We show that it is possible to integrate the generalised condition of pressure isotropy and generate exact solutions to the Einstein field equations for a shear-free cosmological model with heat flow in higher dimensions. Three new metrics are identified which contain results of four dimensions as special cases. We show graphically that the matter variables are well behaved and the speed of sound is causal.

Geodesic models generated by Lie symmetries

We study the junction condition relating the pressure to the heat flux at the boundary of a shearing and expanding spherically symmetric radiating star when the fluid particles are travelling in geodesic motion. The Lie symmetry generators that leave the junction condition invariant are identified and the optimal system is generated. We use each element of the optimal system to transform the partial differential equation to an ordinary differential equation. New exact solutions, which are group invariant under the action of Lie point infinitesimal symmetries, are found. We obtain families of traveling wave solutions and self-similar solutions, amongst others. The gravitational potentials are given in terms of elementary functions, and the line elements can be given explicitly in all cases. We show that the Friedmann dust model is regained as a special case, and we can connect our results to earlier investigations.

Generalized Euclidean stars with equation of state

We consider the general case of an accelerating, expanding and shearing model of a radiating relativistic star using Lie symmetries. We obtain the Lie symmetry generators that leave the equation for the junction condition invariant, and find the Lie algebra corresponding to the optimal system of the symmetries. The symmetries in the optimal system allow us to transform the boundary condition to ordinary differential equations. The various cases for which the resulting systems of equations can be solved are identified. For each of these cases the boundary condition is integrated and the gravitational potentials are found explicitly. A particular group invariant solution produces a class of models which contains Euclidean stars as a special case. Our generalized model satisfies a linear equation of state in general. We thus establish a group theoretic basis for our generalized model with an equation of state. By considering a particular example we show that the weak, dominant and strong energy conditions are satisfied.

Lie symmetries for a conformally flat radiating star

We consider a relativistic radiating spherical star in conformally flat spacetimes. In particular we study the junction condition relating the radial pressure to the heat flux at the boundary of the star which is a nonlinear partial differential equation. The Lie symmetry generators that leave the equation invariant are identified and we generate an optimal system. Each element of the optimal system is used to reduce the partial differential equation to an ordinary differential equation which is further analysed. We identify new categories of exact solutions to the boundary conditions. Two classes of solutions are of interest. The first class depends on a self similar variable. The second class is separable in the spacetime variables.

New charged shear-free relativistic models with heat flux

We study shear-free spherically symmetric relativistic gravitating fluids with heat flow and electric charge. The solution to the Einstein-Maxwell system is governed by the generalised pressure isotropy condition which contains a contribution from the electric field. This condition is a highly nonlinear partial differential equation. We analyse this master equation using Lie's group theoretic approach. The Lie symmetry generators that leave the equation invariant are found. The first generator is independent of the electromagnetic field. The second generator depends critically on the form of the charge, which is determined explicitly in general. We provide exact solutions to the gravitational potentials using the symmetries admitted by the equation. Our new exact solutions contain earlier results without charge. We show that other charged solutions, related to the Lie symmetries, may be generated using the algorithm of Deng. This leads to new classes of charged Deng models which are generalisations of conformally flat metrics.

Higher dimensional charged shear-free relativistic models with heat flux

We analyse shear-free spherically symmetric relativistic models of gravitating fluids with heat flow and electric charge defined on higher dimensional manifolds. The solution to the Einstein-Maxwell system is governed by the pressure isotropy condition which depends on the spacetime dimension. We study this highly nonlinear partial differential equation using Lie's group theoretic approach. The Lie symmetry generators that leave the equation invariant are determined. We provide exact solutions to the gravitational potentials using the first symmetry admitted by the equation. Our new exact solutions contain the earlier results for the four-dimensional case. Using the other Lie generators, we are able to provide solutions to the gravitational potentials or reduce the order of the master equation to a first order nonlinear differential equation. We derive the temperature transport equation in higher dimensions and find expressions for the causal and Eckart temperatures showing their explicit dependance on the dimension. We analyse a particular solution, obtained via group techniques, to show its physical applicability.

First integrals for charged perfect fluid distributions

We study the evolution of shear-free spherically symmetric charged fluids in general relativity. We find a new parametric class of solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell system of field equations. Our charged results are a generalisation of earlier treatments for neutral relativistic fluids. We regain the first integrals found previously for uncharged matter as a special case. In addition an explicit first integral is found which is necessarily charged.

A fifth order differential equation for charged perfect fluids

We investigate the master nonlinear partial differential equation that governs the evolution of shear-free spherically symmetric charged fluids. We use an approach which has not been considered previously for the underlying equation in shear-free spherically symmetric spacetimes. We derive a fifth order purely differential equation that must be satisfied for the underlying equation to admit a Lie point symmetry. We then perform a comprehensive analysis of this equation utilising the Lie symmetry analysis and direct integration. This enables us to reduce the fifth order equation to quadratures. Earlier results are shown to be contained in our general treatment.

New shear-free relativistic models with heat flow

We study shear-free spherically symmetric relativistic models with heat flow. Our analysis is based on Lie's theory of extended groups applied to the governing field equations. In particular, we generate a five-parameter family of transformations which enables us to map existing solutions to new solutions. All known solutions of Einstein equations with heat flow can therefore produce infinite families of new solutions. In addition, we provide two new classes of solutions utilising the Lie infinitesimal generators. These solutions generate an infinite class of solutions given any one of the two unknown metric functions.

Noether and Lie symmetries for charged perfect fluids

We study the underlying nonlinear partial differential equation that governs the behaviour of spherically symmetric charged fluids in general relativity. We investigate the conditions for the equation to admit a first integral or be reduced to quadratures using symmetry methods for differential equations. A general Noether first integral is found. We also undertake a comprehensive group analysis of the underlying equation using Lie point symmetries. The existence of a Lie symmetry is subject to solving an integro-differential equation in general; we investigate the conditions under which it can be reduced to quadratures. Earlier results for uncharged fluids and particular first integrals for charged matter are regained as special cases of our treatment.

Thermal Behaviour of Euclidean Stars

A recent study of dissipative collapse considered a contracting sphere in which the areal and proper radii are equal throughout its evolution. The interior spacetime was matched to the exterior Vaidya spacetime which generated a temporal evolution equation at the boundary of the collapsing sphere. We present a solution of the boundary condition which allows the study of the gravitational and thermodynamical behaviour of this particular radiating model.

Gravitating fluids with Lie symmetries

We analyse the underlying nonlinear partial differential equation which arises in the study of gravitating flat fluid plates of embedding class one. Our interest in this equation lies in discussing new solutions that can be found by means of Lie point symmetries. The method utilised reduces the partial differential equation to an ordinary differential equation according to the Lie symmetry admitted. We show that a class of solutions found previously can be characterised by a particular Lie generator. Several new families of solutions are found explicitly. In particular we find the relevant ordinary differential equation for all one-dimensional optimal subgroups; in several cases the ordinary differential equation can be solved in general. We are in a position to characterise particular solutions with a linear barotropic equation of state.

Lie symmetries for equations in conformal geometries

We seek exact solutions to the Einstein field equations which arise when two spacetime geometries are conformally related. Whilst this is a simple method to generate new solutions to the field equations, very few such examples have been found in practice. We use the method of Lie analysis of differential equations to obtain new group invariant solutions to conformally related Petrov type D spacetimes. Four cases arise depending on the nature of the Lie symmetry generator. In three cases we are in a position to solve the master field equation in terms of elementary functions. In the fourth case special solutions in terms of Bessel functions are obtained. These solutions contain known models as special cases.

Spherical Gravitational Collapse with Heat Flux and Cosmic Censorship

In this paper, we investigate the nature of the singularity in the spherically symmetrical, shear-free, gravitational collapse of a star with heat flux using a separable metric [cqg1]. For any non-singular, regular, radial density profile for a star described by this metric, eq. (2.1), the singularity of the gravitational collapse is not naked locally. Our results here unequivocally support the Strong Cosmic Censorship Hypothesis.

Characterisation of orthogonal perfect fluid cosmological spacetimes

We consider the general orthogonal metric separable in space and time variables in comoving coordinates. We then characterise perfect fluid models admitted by such a metric. It turns out that the homogeneous models can only be either FLRW or Bianchi I while the inhomogeneous ones can only admit $G_2 $ (two mutually as well as hypersurface orthogonal spacelike Killing vectors) isometry. The latter can possess singularities of various kinds or none. The non-singular family is however unique and cylindrically symmetric.
