Study of the Hadronic Transitions $Υ$(2S)$\rightarrow (η,π^0)Υ$(1S) at Belle

We study the rare hadronic transitions $Υ(2S)\rightarrow Υ(1S)η$ and $Υ(2S)\rightarrow Υ(1S)π^0$ using a sample of 158 $\times 10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ decays collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We observe the $η$ meson decay to $γγ$ and $π^+π^-π^0$ final states; the $Υ(1S)$ is reconstructed in the $μ^+μ^-$ and $e^+e^-$ decay modes. We measure the ratios of branching fractions (${\mathcal B}$) $\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)η)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)}$ = (1.99$\pm$0.14 (stat) $\pm$0.11 (syst)) $\times 10^{-3}$ and $\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^0)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)} < 2.3 \times 10^{-4}$ at the 90% confidence level (CL). Assuming the value ${\mathcal B}(Υ(2S) \rightarrow Υ(1S)π^-π^+)$ = (17.92$\pm$0.26)%, we obtain $ {\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)η) = (3.57 \pm 0.25 ({\rm stat})\ \pm 0.21 ({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4} $ and $ {\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^0) < 4.1\times 10^{-5}\ ({\rm 90%\ CL}). $

First Measurement of phi_3 with a Model-independent Dalitz Plot Analysis of B->DK, D->KsPiPi Decay

We present the first measurement of the angle phi_3 of the Unitarity Triangle using a model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of B->DK, D->KsPiPi decays. The method uses an input measurements of the strong phase of the D->KsPiPi amplitude from the CLEO collaboration. The result is based on the full data set of 772x10^6 BBbar pairs collected by the Belle experiment at the Upsilon(4S) resonance. We obtain phi_3 = (77.3^{+15.1}_{-14.9} +- 4.1 +- 4.3)^{\circ} and the suppressed amplitude ratio r_B = 0.145 +- 0.030 +- 0.010 +- 0.011. Here the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third is the error due to the precision of the strong-phase parameters obtained by CLEO.

Search for CP Violation in D Meson Decays to phi pi+

We search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed charged D meson decays by measuring the difference between the CP violating asymmetries for the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D+ -> K+K-pi+ and the Cabibbo-favored decays Ds -> K+K-pi+ in the K+K- mass region of the phi resonance. Using 955/fb of data collected with the Belle detector we obtain A_CP(D+ -> phi pi+) = (+0.51 +- 0.28 +- 0.05)%. The measurement improves the sensitivity of previous searches by more than a factor of five. We find no evidence for direct CP violation.

First Measurement of Inclusive B -> X_s eta Decays

We report a first measurement of inclusive B -> X_s eta decays, where X_s is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudo-inclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. For M_{X_s} < 2.6 GeV/c^2, we measure a branching fraction of (26.1 +/- 3.0 (stat) +1.9 -2.1 (syst) +4.0 -7.1 (model)) x 10^-5 and a direct CP asymmetry of A_{CP} = -0.13 +/- 0.04 +0.02 -0.03. Over half of the signal occurs in the range M_{X_s} > 1.8 GeV/c^2.

Time and Amplitude of Afterpulse Measured with a Large Size Photomultiplier Tube

We have studied the afterpulse of a hemispherical photomultiplier tube for an upcoming reactor neutrino experiment. The timing, the amplitude, and the rate of the afterpulse for a 10 inch photomultiplier tube were measured with a 400 MHz FADC up to 16 \ms time window after the initial signal generated by an LED light pulse. The time and amplitude correlation of the afterpulse shows several distinctive groups. We describe the dependencies of the afterpulse on the applied high voltage and the amplitude of the main light pulse. The present data could shed light upon the general mechanism of the afterpulse.

Determination of the magnetic structure of Yb3Pt4: a k=0 local-moment antiferromagnet

We have used neutron diffraction measurements to study the zero-field magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound Yb3Pt4, which was earlier found to order antiferromagnetically at the Neel temperature TN=2.4 K, and displays a field-driven quantum critical point at 1.6 T. In Yb3Pt4, the Yb moments sit on a single low-symmetry site in the rhombohedral lattice with space group R-3. The Yb ions form octahedra with edges that are twisted with respect to the hexagonal unit cell, a twisting that results in every Yb ion having exactly one Yb nearest neighbor. Below TN, we found new diffracted intensity due to a k=0 magnetic structure. This magnetic structure was compared to all symmetry-allowed magnetic structures, and was subsequently refined. The best fitting magnetic structure model is antiferromagnetic, and involves pairs of Yb nearest neighbors on which the moments point almost exactly towards each other. This structure has moment components within the ab-plane as well as parallel to the c-axis, although the easy magnetization direction lies in the ab-plane. Our magnetization results suggest that besides the crystal-electric field anisotropy, anisotropic exchange favoring alignment along the c-axis is responsible for the overall direction of the ordered moments. The magnitude of the ordered Yb moments in Yb3Pt4 is 0.81 uB/Yb at 1.4 K. The analysis of the bulk properties, the size of the ordered moment, and the observation of well-defined crystal-field levels argue that the Yb moments are spatially localized in zero field.

Study of the charmed baryonic decays $\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c^{++}\bar{p}π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c^{0}\bar{p}π^+$

We study the three-body charmed baryonic decays $\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c^{++} \bar{p}π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c^{0}\bar{p}π^+$ in the four-body final state $\bar{B}^0\toΛ_c^{+}\bar{p}π^+π^-$, using a data sample of 357 fb$^{-1}$ accumulated at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure the branching fractions ${\cal B} (\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c(2455)^{++}\bar{p}π^-)$=$(2.1\pm0.2\pm0.3\pm0.5)\times 10^{-4}$, ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c(2455)^{0}\bar{p}π^+)$=$(1.4\pm0.2\pm0.2\pm0.4)\times1 0^{-4}$, ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c(2520)^{++} \bar{p}π^-)$=$(1.2\pm\0.1\pm0.2\pm0.3)\times10^{-4}$ with statistical significances of 13.1, 9.5 and 7.2 standard deviations, respectively. The errors are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty in ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+\to{p}K^-π^+)$, respectively. We also set an upper limit ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0\toΣ_c(2520)^{0}\bar{p}π^+)<0.38\times10^{-4}$ at the 90% confidence level. In addition, we obtain a non-resonant branching fraction of $(6.4\pm0.4\pm\0.9\pm1.7)\times10^{-4}$, and a total branching fraction of $(11.2\pm0.5\pm1.4\pm2.9)\times10^{-4}$ for $\bar{B}^0\toΛ_c^{+}\bar{p}π^+π^-$.

Noncommutative Geometry of the h-deformed Quantum Plane

The $h$-deformed quantum plane is a counterpart of the $q$-deformed one in the set of quantum planes which are covariant under those quantum deformations of GL(2) which admit a central determinant. We have investigated the noncommutative geometry of the $h$-deformed quantum plane. There is a 2-parameter family of torsion-free linear connections, a 1-parameter sub-family of which are compatible with a skew-symmetric non-degenerate bilinear map. The skew-symmetric map resembles a symplectic 2-form and induces a metric. It is also shown that the extended $h$-deformed quantum plane is a noncommutative version of the Poincaré half-plane, a surface of constant negative Gaussian curvature.
