Achievement of 35 MV/m in the Superconducting Nine-Cell Cavities for TESLA

The Tera Electronvolt Superconducting Linear Accelerator TESLA is the only linear electron-positron collider project based on superconductor technology for particle acceleration. In the first stage with 500 GeV center-of-mass energy an accelerating field of 23.4 MV/m is needed in the superconducting niobium cavities which are operated at a temperature of 2 K and a quality factor Q0 of 10 to the 10. This performance has been reliably achieved in the cavities of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) accelerator. The upgrade of TESLA to 800 GeV requires accelerating gradients of 35 MV/m. Using an improved cavity treatment by electrolytic polishing it has been possible to raise the gradient to 35 - 43 MV/m in single cell resonators. Here we report on the successful transfer of the electropolishing technique to multi-cell cavities. Presently four nine-cell cavities have achieved 35 MV/m, and a fifth cavity could be excited to 39 MV/m. In two high-power tests it could be verified that EP-cavities preserve their excellent performance after welding into the helium cryostat and assembly of the high-power coupler. One cavity has been operated for 1100 hours at the TESLA-800 gradient of 35 MV/m and 57 hours at 36 MV/m without loss in performance.

Scalar and vector form factors of the in-medium nucleon

Using the quark-meson coupling model, we calculate the form factors at sigma- and omega-nucleon strong-interaction vertices in nuclear matter. The Peierls-Yoccoz projection technique is used to take account of center of mass and recoil corrections. We also apply the Lorentz contraction to the internal quark wave function. The form factors are reduced by the nuclear medium relative to those in vacuum. At normal nuclear matter density and Q^2 = 1 GeV^2, the reduction rate in the scalar form factor is about 15%, which is almost identical to that in the vector one. We parameterize the ratios of the form factors in symmetric nuclear matter to those in vacuum as a function of nuclear density and momentum transfer.

Bound Nucleon Form Factors, Quark-Hadron Duality, and Nuclear EMC Effect

We discuss the electromagnetic form factors, axial form factors, and structure functions of a bound nucleon in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Free space nucleon form factors are calculated using the improved cloudy bag model (ICBM). After describing finite nuclei and nuclear matter in the quark-based QMC model, we compute the in-medium modification of the bound nucleon form factors in the same framework. Finally, limits on the medium modification of the bound nucleon $F_2$ structure function are obtained using the calculated in-medium electromagnetic form factors and local quark-hadron duality.

Characterization of the Energy Structure and Adiabatic Magnetization Process of V15

The energy structure of the V$_{15}$ is studied using exact diagonalization methods, and the adiabatic changes of the magnetization in the system with the sweeping field are investigated. We confirm that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to an energy gap which allows the adiabatic change of the magnetization which has been found experimentally by Chiorescu et al., and also predict novel dynamics of the magnetization due to this energy level structure.

The Crab Nebula: 3-dimensional Modeling

We construct an axisymmetric model for the Crab Nebula. The flow dyamics is based on the model by Kennel and Coroniti (1984), but we assume that the kinetic-energy-dominant wind is confined in the equatorial region. We reproduce spacially resolved spectra which agree well with the Chandra results. However, the reproduced image is not a ring but lip-shaped. In addition, brightness contrast between fore and back sides of the ring cannot be reproduced if we assumes that the sigma-parameter is as small as 10**-3. We suggest that the nebula field is highly disordered due to for instance magnetic reconnection. The estimate of sigma can be larger than previously expected.

Pulsar Wind Nebulae and Particle Acceleration in the Pulsar Magnetosphere

This paper deals with the Crab Nebula problem to suggest that particle acceleration takes place not only at the inner shock but also over a larger region in the nebula with disordered magnetic field. Kennel and Cornoniti (1984) constructed a spherically symmetric model of the Crab Nebula and concluded that the pulsar wind which excites the nebular is kinetic-energy dominant (KED) because the nebula flow induced by KED wind is favorable to explain the nebula spectrum and expansion speed. This is true even with new Chandra observation, which provides newly the spatially resolved spectra. We have shown below with 3D modelling and the Chandra image that pure toroidal magnetic field and KED wind are incompatible with the Chandra observation.

Structure Functions of Unstable Lithium Isotopes

We study both the spin-average and spin-dependent structure functions of the lithium isotopes, $^{6-11}$Li, which could be measured at RIKEN and other nuclear facilities in the future. It is found that the light-cone momentum distribution of the valence neutron in the halo of $^{11}$Li is very sharp and symmetric around y = 1, because of the weak binding. The EMC ratios for Li isotopes are then calculated. We study the possibility of extracting the neutron structure function from data for the nuclear structure functions of the Li isotopes. Next we calculate the spin-dependent structure functions of $^{7,9,11}$Li isotopes, which have spin of 3/2. The effect of the nuclear binding and Fermi motion on the multipole spin structure function, $^{3/2}_{~1}g_1$, is about 10% in the region x < 0.7, but it becomes quite important at large x. The spin structure function of $^{3/2}_{~3}g_1$ is also investigated. Finally, we discuss the modification of the Gottfried and Bjorken integrals in a nuclear medium and point out several candidates for a pair of mirror nuclei to study the flavor-nonsinglet quark distributions in nuclei.

Pions in isospin asymmetric nuclei

Using a pair of the lightest mirror nuclei, $^3$He and $^3$H, we study the effect of the medium modification of pion fields on the flavor non-singlet structure function. The change of the pion fields leads to an enhancement of the flavor asymmetry of the antiquark distributions in a nucleus.

Non-singlet structure function of the 3He-3H system and divergence of the Gottfried integral

We study shadowing and antishadowing corrections to the flavor non-singlet structure function F_2(3He)-F_2(3H) and show that the difference between the one-particle density distributions of 3He and 3H plays an important role at very small x. We find that the flavor non-singlet structure function in these mirror nuclei is enhanced at small x by nuclear shadowing, which increases the nuclear Gottfried integral, integrated from 10^{-4} to 1, by 11-36 %. When integrated from zero, the Gottfried integral is divergent for these mirror nuclei. It seems likely that, as a consequence of charge symmetry breaking, this may also apply to the proton-neutron system.

Quarks in nuclear medium

Using the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model we study nuclear matter from the point of view of quark degrees of freedom. As the nucleon model we adopt the MIT bag model and the relativistic constituent quark model, where a square well and harmonic oscillator potentials are used to confine the quarks. We introduce the Lorentz-vector type confining potential as well as the Lorentz-scalar type one in order to examine how the vector confining potential contributes to the properties of the nucleon and nuclear matter. Next, we perform a re-definition of the scalar field in matter and transform the QMC model to a QHD-type model with a non-linear scalar potential. The result obtained from QMC is then compared with the potentials which are determined so as to fit various properties of finite nuclei and nuclear matter in relativistic mean-field models. The QMC model provides the parameters $κ\sim 20 - 40$ (fm$^{-1}$) and $λ\sim 80 - 400$ for the standard, non-linear scalar potential. We discuss a relationship between the QMC and QHD-type models in detail.

In-medium kaon and antikaon properties in the quark-meson coupling model

The properties of the kaon, $K$, and antikaon, $\kbar$, in nuclear medium are studied in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Employing a constituent quark-antiquark (MIT bag model) picture, their excitation energies in a nuclear medium at zero momentum are calculated within mean field approximation. The scalar, and the vector mesons are assumed to couple directly to the nonstrange quarks and antiquarks in the $K$ and $\kbar$ mesons. It is demonstrated that the $ρ$ meson induces different mean field potentials for each member of the isodoublets, $K$ and $\kbar$, when they are embedded in asymmetric nuclear matter. Furthermore, it is also shown that this $ρ$ meson potential is repulsive for the $K^-$ meson in matter with a neutron excess, and renders $K^-$ condensation less likely to occur.

Development of Superconducting Linac for the Kek/Jaeri Joint Project

The JAERI/KEK Joint Project for the high-intensity proton accelerator facility has been proposed with a superconducting (SC) linac option from 400 MeV to 600MeV. System design of the SC linac has been carried out based on the equipartitioning concept. The SC linac is planned to use as an injector to a 3GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) for spallation neutron source after it meets requirement to momentum spread less than +-0.1%. In the R&D work for SC cavities, vertical tests of single-cell and 5 cell cavities were performed. Experiments on multi-cell (5 cell) cavities of b=0.50 and b=0.89 at 2K were carried out with values of maximum electric surface peak fields of 23MV/m and 31MV/m, respectively. A model describing dynamic Lorentz detuning for SC cavities has been developed for pulse mode operation. Validity of the model was confirmed experimentally to simulate the performance.

Deep inelastic scattering on asymmetric nuclei

We study deep inelastic scattering on isospin asymmetric nuclei. In particular, the difference of the nuclear structure functions and the Gottfried sum rule for the lightest mirror nuclei, 3He and 3H, are investigated. It is found that such systems can provide significant information on charge symmetry breaking and flavor asymmetry in the nuclear medium. Furthermore, we propose a new method to extract the neutron structure function from radioactive isotopes far from the line of stability. We also discuss the flavor asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process with isospin asymmetric nuclei.

Novel features of $J/Ψ$ dissociation in matter

We make a detailed study of the effect that the recently predicted modification of the in-medium masses of charmed mesons would have on $J/Ψ$ dissociation on pion and $ρ$-meson comovers in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find a substantial dependence of the $J/Ψ$ absorption rates on the density and temperature of the nuclear matter. This suggests that a quantitative analysis of $J/Ψ$ dissociation in nucleus nucleus collisions should include the effects of the modification of meson masses in dense matter.

Nucleon structure effect on the longitudinal response function

Using the quark-meson coupling model, we study the longitudinal response function for quasielastic electron scattering from nuclear matter within relativistic RPA. In QMC the coupling constant between the scalar meson and the nucleon is expected to decrease with increasing nuclear density. Furthermore, since the electromagnetic form factors of the in-medium nucleon are modified at the same time, the longitudinal response function and the Coulomb sum are reduced by a total of about 20% in comparison with the Hartree contribution.

Isospin Symmetry Breaking in Nuclei - ONS Anomaly

We study the binding energy differences of the valence proton and neutron of the mirror nuclei, $^{15}$O - $^{15}$N, $^{17}$F - $^{17}$O, $^{39}$Ca - $^{39}$K and $^{41}$Sc - $^{41}$Ca, using the quark-meson coupling model. The calculation involves nuclear structure and shell effects explicitly. It is shown that binding energy differences of a few hundred keV arise from the strong interaction, even after subtracting all electromagnetic corrections. The origin of these differences may be ascribed to the charge symmetry breaking effects set in the strong interaction through the u and d current quark mass difference. In this report, we first review the quark-meson coupling model. In particular, we discuss about the nucleon mass in nuclear medium. Then, we present details of the charge symmetry breaking in finite nuclei, especially the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer anomaly.

The use of this quantum computer simulator is illustrated through several implementations of Grover's database search algorithm. Some preliminary results on the stability of quantum algorithms are presented.
