Bayesian approach to the first excited nucleon state in lattice QCD

We present preliminary results from the first attempt to reconstruct the spectral function in the nucleon and $Δ$ channels from lattice QCD data using the maximum entropy method (MEM). An advantage of the MEM analysis is to enable us to access information of the excited state spectrum. Performing simulations on two lattice volumes, we confirm the large finite size effect on the first excited nucleon state in the lighter quark mass region.

Instability of capacitance mode in multi-walled nanotubes

Conditions for intra and inter layer Coulomb interactions in multi-walled carbon nanotubes are derived from stability of capacitance excitations. It is pointed out, supposing the stability conditions are not satisfied, that the system has unstable modes which correspond to a charge transfer between layers or charge density oscillation in each layer depending on zero mode or non-zero modes. It is argued that the stability conditions can be broken when the vacuum polarization processes due to the massive bands are taken into account.

Nonmesonic weak decay of light hypernuclei with coherent $Σ$ mixing

Nonmesonic weak decays of the A=4, and 5 hypernuclei are studied. The short range parts of the hyperon-nucleon weak interactions are described by the direct quark (DQ) weak transition potential, while the longer range interactions are given by the $π$ and $K$ meson exchange processes. Virtual $Σ$ mixings of the coherent type are found to give significant effects on the decay rates of $^4_Λ{\rm He}$. A large violation of the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule is predicted in the J=0 transition amplitudes.

Chiral Anomaly in Toroidal Carbon Nanotubes

It is pointed out that the chiral anomaly in 1+1 dimensions should be observed in toroidal carbon nanotubes on a planar geometry with varying magnetic field. We show that the chiral anomaly is closely connected with the persistent current in a one-dimensional metallic ring.

Charge Screening Effect in Metallic Carbon Nanotubes

Charge screening effect in metallic carbon nanotubes is investigated in a model including the one-dimensional long-range Coulomb interaction. It is pointed out that an external charge which is being fixed spatially is screened by internal electrons so that the resulting object becomes electrically neutral. We found that the screening length is given by about the diameter of a nanotube.

Positivity constraints on photon structure functions

We investigate the positivity constraints for the structure functions of both virtual and real photon. From the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality we derive three positivity conditions for the general virtual photon case, which reduce, in the real photon case, to one condition relating the polarized and unpolarized structure functions.

Vacuum structure of Toroidal Carbon Nanotubes

Low energy excitations in carbon nanotubes can be described by an effective field theory of two components spinor. It is pointed out that the chiral anomaly in 1+1 dimensions should be observed in a metallic toroidal carbon nanotube on a planar geometry with varying magnetic field. We propose an experimental setup for studying this quantum effect. We also analyze the vacuum structure of the metallic toroidal carbon nanotube including the Coulomb interactions and discuss some effects of external charges on the vacuum.

Diffeomorphism on Horizon as an Asymptotic Isometry of Schwarzschild Black Hole

It is argued that the diffeomorphism on the horizontal sphere can be regarded as a nontrivial asymptotic isometry of the Schwarzschild black hole. We propose a new boundary condition of asymptotic metrics near the horizon and show that the condition admits the local time-shift and diffeomorphism on the horizon as the asymptotic symmetry.

Toward Generalized Entropy Composition with Different q Indices and H-Theorem

An attempt is made to construct composable composite entropy with different $q$ indices of subsystems and address the H-theorem problem of the composite system. Though the H-theorem does not hold in general situations, it is shown that some composite entropies do not decrease in time in near-equilibrium states and factorized states with negligibly weak interaction between the subsystems.

Thermal and Tunneling Pair Creation of Quasiparticles in Quantum Hall Systems

We make a semiclassical analysis of thermal pair creations of quasiparticles at various filling factors in quantum Hall systems. It is argued that the gap energy is reduced considerably by the Coulomb potential made by impurities. It is also shown that a tunneling process becomes important at low temperature and at strong magnetic field. We fit typical experimental data excellently based on our semiclassical results of the gap energy.

Weak Decay of $Λ$ in Nuclei : Quarks vs Mesons

Decays of $Λ$ in nuclei, nonmesonic mode, are studied by using the $ΛN \to NN$ weak transition potential derived from the meson exchange mechanism and the direct quark mechanism. The decay rates are calculated both for the $Λ$ in symmetric nuclear matter and light hypernuclei. We consider the exchange of six mesons ($π, K, η, ρ, ω, K^\ast$). The form factor in the meson exchange mechanism and short range correlation are carefully studied.

Skyrmions and Quantum Hall Ferromagnets in Improved Composite-Boson Theory

An improved composite-boson theory of quantum Hall ferromagnets is proposed. It is tightly related with the microscopic wave-function theory. The characteristic feature is that the field operator describes solely the physical degrees of freedom representing the deviation from the ground state. It presents a powerful tool to analyze excited states within the \LLLd. Excitations include a Goldstone mode and nonlocal topological solitons. Solitons are vortices and Skyrmions carrying the U(1) and SU(2) topological charges, respectively. Their classical configurations are derived from their microscopic wave functions. The activation energy of one Skyrmion is estimated, which explains experimental data remarkably well.

Roles of Quarks in Strong and Weak YN Interactions

The short range parts of the strong and weak hyperon-nucleon interactions are studied with quark substructure of the baryons taken into account. A summary of the quark cluster model calculations of the baryon-baryon interactions is presented. It is pointed out that the spin-flavor symmetry structure determines the qualitative behaviors of the short-range YN interactions. We also show that the spin-orbit YN forces give characteristic behaviors, which are distinct from the meson exchange forces. Weak decays of $Λ$ in hypernuclei are described by the direct quark mechanism. We find that the neutron induced nonmesonic decay is enhanced due to the direct quark transition. Importance of the $ΔI=3/2$ decay amplitudes is emphasized both for the nonmesonic weak decays and the $π^+$ emission in the $Λ$ decay.

Multiwavelength Monitoring of the BL Lacertae Object PKS 2155-304 in May 1994. III. Probing the Inner Jet through Multiwavelength Correlations

In May 1994 the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 was observed continuously for ~10 d with IUE and EUVE and for 2 d with ASCA, as well as with ROSAT and with ground- based radio, IR, and optical telescopes. The light curves show a well-defined X-ray flare (x2 increase in 1/2 d, with similar decay) followed by a broader, lower amplitude EUV flare ~1 day later, and a broad, low-amplitude UV flare ~2 d later (amplitude ~35%, duration >2 d). In the preceding week there was at least one X-ray flare of comparable amplitude or perhaps ongoing stochastic X-ray variations. An extremely rapid change in UV flux was seen at the beginning of the IUE observation. Assuming the central X-ray, EUV, and UV events are associated, the lags, the decrease of amplitude with wavelength, and the broadening of the temporal profile with wavelength are all qualitatively as expected for synchrotron emission from an inhomogeneous relativistic jet. We can rule out a Fermi-type shock acceleration event or a pair cascade in a homogeneous synchrotron-emitting region. A homogeneous region is still possible if there was an instantaneous (t<<hours) injection of high energy electrons that emit first at X-ray energies. Alternatively, the data are consistent with a compression wave or other disturbance crossing a region with stratified particle energy distributions (e.g., behind a shock front and/or in an inhomogeneous jet). The present light curves are in sharp contrast to November 1991, when the amplitude was wavelength independent and the UV lagged the X-rays by less than ~3 hours. This means that the origin of rapid multiwavelength variability in this blazar is complex, involving at least two different modes. (abbreviated abstract)

The Gluon Self-Energy in the Coulomb and Temporal Axial Gauges via the Pinch Technique

The $S$-matrix pinch technique is used to derive an effective gluon self-energy to one-loop order, when the theory is quantized in the Coulomb gauge (CG) and in the temporal axial gauge (TAG). When the pinch contributions are added, the gluon self-energies calculated in CG and TAG turn out to be identical and coincide with the result previously obtained with covariant gauges. The issue of gauge independence of several quantities in hot QCD is discussed from the pinch technique point of view. It is also pointed out that the spurious singularities which appear in TAG calculations cancel out once the pinch contributions are combined.

Muonium Hyperfine Structure and the Decay $ μ^+\to e^+ +\overline ν_e +ν_μ$ in Models with Dilepton Gauge Bosons

We examine the muonium ($μ^+e^-$)-antimuonium ($μ^-e^+$) system in the models which accomodate the dilepton gauge bosons, and study their contributions to the ground state hyperfine splitting in ``muonium''. We also consider the exotic muon decay $μ^+\to e^+ +\overline ν_e +ν_μ$ mediated by the dilepton gauge boson, and obtain a lower bound $(M_{X^{\pm }}/g_{3l})>550 \rm GeV$ at 90\% confidence level for the singly-charged dilepton mass using the unitarity relation of the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix for the 3-family case.
