Efficient Experimental Qudit State Estimation via Point Tomography

Point tomography is a new approach to the problem of state estimation, which is arguably the most efficient and simple method for modern high-precision quantum information experiments. In this scenario, the experimenter knows the target state that their device should prepare, except that intrinsic systematic errors will create small discrepancies in the state actually produced. By introducing a new kind of informationally complete measurement, dubbed Fisher-symmetric measurements, point tomography determines deviations from the expected state with optimal efficiency. In this method, the number of outcomes of a measurement saturating the Gill-Massar limit for reconstructing a $d$-dimensional quantum states can be reduced from $\sim 4d-3$ to only $2d-1$ outcomes. Thus, providing better scalability as the dimension increases. Here we demonstrate the experimental viability of point tomography. Using a modern photonic platform constructed with state-of-the-art multicore optical fiber technology, we generate 4-dimensional quantum states and implement seven-outcome Fisher-symmetric measurements. Our experimental results exhibit the main feature of point tomography, namely a precision close to the Gill-Massar limit with a single few-outcome measurement. Specifically, we achieved a precision of $3.8/N$ while the Gill-Massar limit for $d=4$ is $3/N$ ($N$ being the ensemble size).

Search for Two-Photon Interaction with Axionlike Particles Using High-Repetition Pulsed Magnets and Synchrotron X Rays

We report on new results of a search for two-photon interaction with axionlike particles (ALPs). The experiment was carried out at a synchrotron radiation facility using a "light shining through a wall (LSW)" technique. For this purpose, we have developed a novel pulsed-magnet system, composed of multiple racetrack-magnets and a transportable power supply. It produces fields of about 10 T over 0.8 m with a high repetition rate of 0.2 Hz and yields a new method of probing vacuum with high intensity fields. The data obtained with a total of 27,676 pulses provide a limit on the ALP-two-photon coupling constant that is more stringent by a factor of 5.2 compared to a previous x-ray LSW limit for the ALP mass below 0.1 eV.

An experiment of X-ray photon-photon elastic scattering with a Laue-case beam collider

We report a search for photon-photon elastic scattering in vacuum in the X-ray region at an energy in the center of mass system of ω_{cms} =6.5 keV for which the QED cross section is σ_{QED} =2.5 \times 10^{-47} m^2. An X-ray beam provided by the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser is split and the two beamlets are made to collide at right angle, with a total integrated luminosity of (1.24 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{28} m^{-2}. No signal X rays from the elastic scattering that satisfy the correlation between energy and scattering angle were detected. We obtain a 95% C.L. upper limit for the scattering cross section of 1.9 \times 10^{-27} m^2 at ω_{cms}=6.5 keV. The upper limit is the lowest upper limit obtained so far by keV experiments.

Suppression of the antiferromagnetic pseudogap in the electron-doped high-temperature superconductor by "protect annealing"

In the hole-doped cuprates, a small amount of carriers suppresses antiferromagnetism and induces superconductivity. In the electron-doped cuprates, on the other hand, superconductivity appears only in a narrow range of high electron concentration ($\sim$ doped Ce content) after reduction annealing, and strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlation persists in the superconducting phase. Recently, Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) bulk single crystals annealed by a "protect annealing" method showed a high $T_c$ of $\sim$ 27 K for small Ce content down to $x \sim 0.05$. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of PLCCO crystals, we observed a sharp quasi-particle peak on the entire Fermi surface without signature of an AFM pseudogap unlike all the previous work, indicating a dramatic reduction of AFM correlation length and/or of magnetic moments. The superconducting state was found to extend over a wide electron concentration range. The present ARPES results fundamentally change the long-standing picture on the electronic structure in the electron-doped regime.

Fate of $yz$/$zx$ orbital degeneracy and $xy$ Fermi surface in Ru substituted FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$

We have investigated the impact of Ru substitution on the multi-band electronic structure of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The ARPES results exhibit suppression of the $xy$ Fermi surface and the spectral broadening near the zone boundaries, which can be associated with the lattice disorder introduced by the Ru substitution. The degeneracy of the Fe 3$d$ $yz$/$zx$ bands at the zone center, which is broken in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$, is partly recovered with the Ru substitution, indicating coexistence of nematic and non-nematic electronic states.

Coexistence of Bloch electrons and glassy electrons in Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 shows that the Fe 3d electrons in the FeAs layer form the hole-like Fermi pocket at the zone center and the electron-like Fermi pockets at the zone corners as commonly seen in various Fe-based superconductors. The FeAs layer is heavily electron doped and has relatively good two dimensionality. On the other hand, the Ir 5d electrons are metallic and glassy probably due to atomic disorder related to the Ir 5d orbital instability. Ca10(Ir4As8)(Fe2_xIrxAs2)5 exhibits a unique electronic state where the Bloch electrons in the FeAs layer coexist with the glassy electrons in the Ir4As8 layer.

Search for Photon-Photon Elastic Scattering in the X-ray Region

We report the first results of a search for real photon-photon scattering using X rays. A novel system is developed to split and collide X-ray pulses by applying interferometric techniques. A total of $6.5\times10^{5}$ pulses (each containing about $10^{11}$ photons) from an X-ray Free-Electron Laser are injected into the system. No scattered events are observed, and an upper limit of $1.7\times 10^{-24}$ ${\rm m^{2}}$ (95% C.L.) is obtained on the photon-photon elastic scattering cross section at 6.5 keV.

Results of a Search for Paraphotons with Intense X-ray Beams at SPring-8

A search for paraphotons, or hidden U(1) gauge bosons, is performed using an intense X-ray beamline at SPring--8. "Light Shining through a Wall" technique is used in this search. No excess of events above background is observed. A stringent constraint is obtained on the photon--paraphoton mixing angle, $χ< 8.06\times 10^{-5}\ (95%\ {\rm C.L.})$ for $0.04\ {\rm eV}<m_{γ^{\prime}} < 26\ {\rm keV}$.

Numerical Computation of Thermoelectric and Thermomagnetic Effects

Phenomenological equations describing the Seebeck, Hall, Nernst, Peltier, Ettingshausen, and Righi-Leduc effects are numerically solved for the temperature, electric current, and electrochemical potential distributions of semiconductors under magnetic field. The results are compared to experiments.
