Optically defined cavities in driven-dissipative photonic lattices

The engineering of localised modes in photonic structures is one of the main targets of modern photonics. An efficient strategy to design these modes is to use the interplay of constructive and destructive interference in periodic photonic lattices. This mechanism is at the origin of defect modes in photonic bandgaps, bound states in the continuum and compact localised states in flat bands. Here we show that in lattices of lossy resonators, the addition of external optical drives with controlled phase enlarges the possibilities of manipulating interference effects and allows designing novel types of localised modes. Using a honeycomb lattice of coupled micropillars resonantly driven with several laser spots at energies within its photonic bands we demonstrate the localisation of light in at-will geometries down to a single site. These localised modes can be seen as fully reconfigurable optical cavities with the potentiality of enhancing nonlinear effects and of controlling light-matter interactions with single site resolution.

Antireflective photonic structure for coherent nonlinear spectroscopy of single magnetic quantum dots

This work presents epitaxial growth and optical spectroscopy of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) in (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te barriers placed on the top of (Cd,Zn,Mg)Te distributed Bragg reflector. The formed photonic mode in our half-cavity structure permits to enhance the local excitation intensity and extraction efficiency of the QD photoluminescence, while suppressing the reflectance within the spectral range covering the QD transitions. This allows to perform coherent, nonlinear, resonant spectroscopy of individual QDs. The coherence dynamics of a charged exciton is measured via four-wave mixing, with the estimated dephasing time $T_2=(210\,\pm\,40)$ ps. The same structure contains QDs doped with single Mn$^{2+}$ ions, as detected in photoluminescence spectra. Our work therefore paves the way toward investigating and controlling an exciton coherence coupled, via $s$,$p$-$d$ exchange interaction, with an individual spin of a magnetic dopant.

Fe dopant in ZnO: 2+ vs 3+ valency and ion-carrier s,p-d exchange interaction

Dopants of transition metal ions in II-VI semiconductors exhibit native 2+ valency. Despite this, 3+ or mixed 3+/2+ valency of iron ions in ZnO was reported previously. Several contradictory mechanisms have been put forward for explanation of this fact so far. Here, we analyze Fe valency in ZnO by complementary theoretical and experimental studies. Our calculations within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA+U) indicate that the Fe ion is a relatively shallow donor. Its stable charge state is Fe2+ in ideal ZnO, however, the high energy of the (+/0) transition level enhances the compensation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ by non-intentional acceptors in real samples. Using several experimental methods like electron paramagnetic resonance, magnetometry, conductivity, excitonic magnetic circular dichroism and magneto-photoluminescence we confirm the 3+ valency of the iron ions in polycrystalline (Zn,Fe)O films with the Fe content attaining 0.2%.We find a predicted increase of n-type conductivity upon the Fe doping with the Fe donor ionization energy of 0.25 +/- 0.02 eV consistent with the results of theoretical considerations. Moreover, our magnetooptical measurements confirm the calculated non-vanishing s,p-d exchange interaction between band carriers and localized magnetic moments of the Fe3+ ions in the ZnO, being so far an unsettled issue.
