Hadronic corrections to the muon decay

We consider the O(alpha^2) hadronic corrections to the energy spectrum of the decay electron in muon decay. We find that the correction can be described, within good approximation, by a linear function in the electron energy. Explicit expressions for the form factors needed in an approach based on dispersion integrals are given.

QCD Duality and the Mass of the Charm Quark

The mass of the charm quark is analyzed in the context of QCD finite energy sum rules using recent BESII e+e- annihilation data and a large momentum expansion of the QCD correlator which incorporates terms to order (alpha_s)^2 (m_c^2/q^2)^6. Using various versions of duality, we obtain the consistent result m_c(m_c)=(1.37 +- 0.09)GeV. Our result is quite independent of the ones based on the inverse moment analysis.

Approximate 3-Dimensional Electrical Impedance Imaging

We discuss a new approach to three-dimensional electrical impedance imaging based on a reduction of the information to be demanded from a reconstruction algorithm. Images are obtained from a single measurement by suitably simplifying the geometry of the measuring chamber and by restricting the nature of the object to be imaged and the information required from the image. In particular we seek to establish the existence or non-existence of a single object (or a small number of objects) in a homogeneous background and the location of the former in the (x,y)-plane defined by the measuring electrodes. Given in addition the conductivity of the object rough estimates of its position along the z-axis may be obtained. The approach may have practical applications.

Ratio of strange to non-strange quark condensates in QCD

Laplace transform QCD sum rules for two-point functions related to the strangeness-changing scalar and pseudoscalar Green's functions $ψ(Q^2)$ and $ψ_5(Q^2)$, are used to determine the subtraction constants $ψ(0)$ and $ψ_5(0)$, which fix the ratio $R_{su}\equiv \frac{<\bar{s}s>}{<\bar{u}u>}$. Our results are $ψ(0)= - (1.06 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-3} {GeV}^4$, $ψ_5(0)= (3.35 \pm 0.25) \times 10^{-3} {GeV}^4$, and $R_{su}\equiv \frac{<\bar{s}s>}{<\bar{u}u>} = 0.5 \pm 0.1$. This implies corrections to kaon-PCAC at the level of 50%, which although large, are not inconsistent with the size of the corrections to Goldberger-Treiman relations in $SU(3)\otimes SU(3)$.

QCD Sum Rule Determination of $α(M_Z)$ with Minimal Data Input

We present the results of a new evaluation of the running fine structure constant $α$ at the scale of the $Z$ mass in which the role of the $e^+e^-$ annihilation input data needed in this evaluation is minimized. This is achieved by reducing the weight function $M_Z^2/(s(M_Z^2-s))$ in the dispersion integral over the $e^+e^-$ annihilation data by subtracting a polynomial function from the weight function which mimics its energy dependence in given energy intervals. In order to compensate for this subtraction the same polynomial weight integral is added again but is now evaluated on a circular contour in the complex plane using QCD and global duality. For the hadronic contribution to the shift in the fine structure constant we obtain $Δα^{(5)}_{\rm had}=(277.6\pm 4.1)\cdot 10^{-4}$. Adding in the leptonic and top contributions our final result is $α(M_Z)^{-1}=128.925\pm 0.056$.

Hadronic Corrections at O(alpha^2) to the Energy Spectrum of Muon Decay

K0 form factor at order p^6 of chiral perturbation theory

This paper describes the calculation of the electromagnetic form factor of the K0 meson at order p^6 of chiral perturbation theory which is the next-to-leading order correction to the well-known p^4 result achieved by Gasser and Leutwyler. On the one hand, at order p^6 the chiral expansion contains 1- and 2-loop diagrams which are discussed in detail. Especially, a numerical procedure for calculating the irreducible 2-loop graphs of the sunset topology is presented. On the other hand, the chiral Lagrangian L^6 produces a direct coupling of the K0 current with the electromagnetic field tensor. Due to this coupling one of the unknown parameters of L^6 occurs in the contribution to the K0 charge radius.

Is there evidence for dimension-two corrections in QCD two-point functions?

The ALEPH data on the (non-strange) vector and axial-vector spectral functions, extracted from tau-lepton decays, is used in order to search for evidence for a dimension-two contribution, $C_{2 V,A}$, to the Operator Product Expansion (other than $d=2$ quark mass terms). This is done by means of a dimension-two Finite Energy Sum Rule, which relates QCD to the experimental hadronic information. The average $C_{2} \equiv (C_{2V} + C_{2A})/2$ is remarkably stable against variations in the continuum threshold, but depends rather strongly on $Λ_{QCD}$. Given the current wide spread in the values of $Λ_{QCD}$, as extracted from different experiments, we would conservatively conclude from our analysis that $C_{2}$ is consistent with zero.

Delta I = 1/2 enhancement and the Glashow-Schnitzer-Weinberg sum rule

In 1967 Glashow, Schnitzer and Weinberg derived a sum rule in the soft-pion and soft kaon limit relating the Delta I=1/2 non-leptonic K->2pi amplitude to integrals over strange and non-strange spectral functions. Using the recent ALEPH data from tau-decay, we show that the sum rule, slightly modified to reduce contributions near the cut, yields the correct magnitude decay amplitude corresponding to the Delta I=1/2 rule.

Finite energy chiral sum rules in QCD

A set of well known chiral sum rules, expected to be valid in QCD, is confronted with experimental data on the vector and axial-vector hadronic spectral functions, obtained from tau-lepton decay by the ALEPH collaboration. The Das-Mathur-Okubo sum rule, the first and second Weinberg sum rules, and the electromagnetic pion mass difference sum rule are not well saturated by the data. Instead, a modified set of sum rules having additional weight factors that vanish at the end of the integration range on the real axis, is found to be precociously saturated by the data to a remarkable extent.

On the running electromagnetic coupling constant at $M_Z$

We present a discussion on how to define the running electromagnetic coupling constant at $M_Z$ or some other intermediate scale as e.g. $m_Υ$. We argue that a natural definition consistent with general requirements of the renormalization group should be based on Euclidean values of the momentum of the photon propagator as the appropriate scale. We demonstrate in an explicit example of evaluating the running coupling constant at the scale of the $Υ$ resonance mass that the usual definition of the hadronic contribution with a principal value prescription is inconsistent. In the determination of the value of $α$ at $M_Z$ the numerical difference due to using a Euclidean definition rather than the principal value one is comparable in size to the errors caused by existing experimental and QCD inputs to the evaluation of $α(M_Z)$.

Chiral sum rules and duality in QCD

The ALEPH data on the vector and axial-vector spectral functions, extracted from tau-lepton decays is used in order to test local and global duality, as well as a set of four QCD chiral sum rules. These are the Das-Mathur-Okubo sum rule, the first and second Weinberg sum rules, and a relation for the electromagnetic pion mass difference. We find these sum rules to be poorly saturated, even when the upper limit in the dispersion integrals is as high as $3 GeV^{2}$. Since perturbative QCD, plus condensates, is expected to be valid for $|q^{2}| \geq \cal{O}$$(1 GeV^{2})$ in the whole complex energy plane, except in the vicinity of the right hand cut, we propose a modified set of sum rules with weight factors that vanish at the end of the integration range on the real axis. These sum rules are found to be precociously saturated by the data to a remarkable extent. As a byproduct, we extract for the low energy renormalization constant $\bar{L}_{10}$ the value $- 4 \bar{L}_{10}= 2.43 \times 10^{-2}$, to be compared with the standard value $- 4 \bar{L}_{10} = (2.73 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{-2}$. This in turn implies a pion polarizability $α_{E} = 3.7 \times 10^{-4} fm^{3}$.

Determination of the strange-quark mass from QCD pseudoscalar sum rules

A new determination of the strange-quark mass is discussed, based on the two-point function involving the axial-vector current divergences. This Green function is known in perturbative QCD up to order O(alpha_s^3), and up to dimension-six in the non-perturbative domain. The hadronic spectral function is parametrized in terms of the kaon pole, followed by its two radial excitations, and normalized at threshold according to conventional chiral-symmetry. The result of a Laplace transform QCD sum rule analysis of this two-point function is: m_s(1 GeV^2) = 155 pm 25 MeV.

First Results with a new Method for calculating 2-loop Box-Functions

We describe a first attempt to calculate scalar 2-loop box-functions with arbitrary internal masses, applying a novel method proposed in hep-ph/9407234. Four of the eight integrals are accessible to integration by means of the residue theorem, leaving a rational function in the remaining variables. The result of the procedure is a three- or sometimes two-dimensional integral representation over a finite volume that can be further evaluated using numerical methods.

The strange-quark mass from QCD sum rules in the pseudoscalar channel

QCD Laplace transform sum rules, involving the axial-vector current divergences, are used in order to determine the strange quark mass. The two-point function is known in QCD up to four loops in perturbation theory, and up to dimension-six in the non-perturbative sector. The hadronic spectral function is reconstructed using threshold normalization from chiral symmetry, together with experimental data for the two radial excitations of the kaon. The result for the running strange quark mass, in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme at a scale of 1 ${GeV}^{2}$ is: ${\bar m}_{s}(1 GeV^{2}) = 155 \pm 25 {MeV}$.

Calculation of Infrared-Divergent Feynman Diagrams with Zero Mass Threshold

Two-loop vertex Feynman diagrams with infrared and collinear divergences are investigated by two independent methods. On the one hand, a method of calculating Feynman diagrams from their small momentum expansion extended to diagrams with zero mass thresholds is applied. On the other hand, a numerical method based on a two-fold integral representation is used. The application of the latter method is possible by using lightcone coordinates in the parallel space. The numerical data obtained with the two methods are in impressive agreement.

New high order relations between physical observables in perturbative QCD

We exploit the fact that within massless perturbative QCD the same Green's function determines the hadronic contribution to the $τ$ decay width and the moments of the $e^+e^-$ cross section. This allows one to obtain relations between physical observables in the two processes up to an unprecedented high order of perturbative QCD. A precision measurement of the $τ$ decay width allows one then to predict the first few moments of the spectral density in $e^+e^-$ annihilations integrated up to $s\sim m_τ^2$ with high accuracy. The proposed tests are in reach of present experimental capabilities.
