Luttinger liquids with boundaries: Power-laws and energy scales

We present a study of the one-particle spectral properties for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries. We first consider the Tomonaga-Luttinger model using bosonization. For weak interactions the boundary exponent of the power-law suppression of the spectral weight close to the chemical potential is dominated by a term linear in the interaction. This motivates us to study the spectral properties also within the Hartree-Fock approximation. It already gives power-law behavior and qualitative agreement with the exact spectral function. For the lattice model of spinless fermions and the Hubbard model we present numerically exact results obtained using the density-matrix renormalization-group algorithm. We show that many aspects of the behavior of the spectral function close to the boundary can again be understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation. For the repulsive Hubbard model with interaction U the spectral weight is enhanced in a large energy range around the chemical potential. At smaller energies a power-law suppression, as predicted by bosonization, sets in. We present an analytical discussion of the crossover and show that for small U it occurs at energies exponentially (in -1/U) close to the chemical potential, i.e. that bosonization only holds on exponentially small energy scales. We show that such a crossover can also be found in other models.

Boundary effects on one-particle spectra of Luttinger liquids

We calculate one-particle spectra for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundary conditions. For the repulsive Hubbard model the spectral weight close to the boundary is enhanced in a large energy range around the chemical potential. A power law suppression, previously predicted by bosonization, only occurs after a crossover at energies very close to the chemical potential. Our comparison with exact spectra shows that the effects of boundaries can partly be understood within the Hartree-Fock approximation.

Theory of exciton-exciton correlation in nonlinear optical response

We present a systematic theory of Coulomb interaction effects in the nonlinear optical processes in semiconductors using a perturbation series in the exciting laser field. The third-order dynamical response consists of phase-space filling correction, mean-field exciton-exciton interaction, and two-exciton correlation effects expressed as a force-force correlation function. The theory provides a unified description of effects of bound and unbound biexcitons, including memory-effects beyond the Markovian approximation. Approximations for the correlation function are presented.

Confined coherence and analytic properties of Green's functions

A simple model of noninteracting electrons with a separable one-body potential is used to discuss the possible pole structure of single particle Green's functions for fermions on unphysical sheets in the complex frequency plane as a function of the system parameters. The poles in the exact Green's function can cross the imaginary axis, in contrast to recent claims that such a behaviour is unphysical. As the Green's function of the model has the same functional form as an approximate Green's function of coupled Luttinger liquids no definite conclusions concerning the concept of "confined coherence" can be drawn from the locations of the poles of this Green's function.

Hot electron relaxation: Exact solution for a many electron model

The exact nonequilibrium time evolution of the momentum distribution for a finite many particle system in one dimension with a linear energy dispersion coupled to optical phonons is presented. For distinguishable particles the influence function of the phonon bath can be evaluated also for a finite particle density in the thermodynamic limit. In the case of fermions the exact fulfillment of the Pauli principle involves a sum over permutations of the electrons and the numerical evaluation is restricted to a finite number of electrons. In the dynamics the antisymmetry of the wavefunction shows up in the obvious Pauli blocking of momentum states as well as more subtle interference effects. The model shows the expected physical features known from approximate treatments of more realistic models for the relaxation in the energy regime far from the bottom of the conduction band and provides an excellent testing ground for quantum kinetic equations.

Fermion-boson transmutation and comparison of statistical ensembles in one dimension

The theoretical description of interacting fermions in one spatial dimension is simplified by the fact that the low energy excitations can be described in terms of bosonic degrees of freedom. This fermion-boson transmutation (FBT) which lies at the heart of the Luttinger liquid concept is presented in a way which does not require a knowledge of quantum field theoretical methods. As the basic facts can already be introduced for noninteracting fermions they are mainly discussed. As an application we use the FBT to present exact results for the low temperature thermodynamics and the occupation numbers in the microcanonical and the canonical ensemble. They are compared with the standard grand canonical results.
