Various sophisticated approximation methods exist for the description of quantum many-body systems. It was realized early on that the theoretical description can simplify considerably in one-dimensional systems and various exact solutions exist. The focus in this introductory paper is on fermionic systems and the emergence of the Luttinger liquid concept.
The joint probability distribution in the full counting statistics (FCS) for noninteracting electrons is discussed for an arbitrary number of initially separate subsystems which are connected at t=0 and separated at a later time. A simple method to obtain the leading order long time contribution to the logarithm of the characteristic function is presented which simplifies earlier approaches. New explicit results for the determinant involving the scattering matrices are found. The joint probability distribution for two leads is discussed for Y-junctions and dots connected to four leads.
This chapter reviews the theoretical description of interacting fermions in one dimension. The Luttinger liquid concept is elucidated using the Tomonaga-Luttinger model as well as integrable lattice models. Weakly coupled chains and attempts to experimentally verify the theoretical predictions are discussed.
For quantum mechanics on a lattice the position (``particle number'') operator and the quasi-momentum (``phase'') operator obey canonical commutation relations (CCR) only on a dense set of the Hilbert space. We compare exact numerical results for a particle in simple potentials on the lattice with the expectations, when the CCR are assumed to be strictly obeyed. Only for sufficiently smooth eigenfunctions this leads to reasonable results. In the long time limit the use of the CCR can lead to a qualitativel wrong dynamics even if the initial state is in the dense set.
In a recent letter, Zvyagin calculates the density of states for 4f electrons coupled to a conduction band in the framework of the Bethe ansatz (BA) solution for the degenerate Anderson model. It is claimed that the results qualitatively disagree with the results obtained for the same model but using a variational approach. Even the high energy feature in the f-spectral function near the 4f-level energy ef, i.e. the ``normal'' ionization peak (NIP), is argued to be qualitatively different in the two approaches. In the following we point out that this is not the case.
The theoretical description of interacting fermions in one spatial dimension is simplified by the fact that the low energy spectrum of noniteracting fermions is identical to the one of a harmonic chain. This fermion-boson transmutation allows to describe interacting fermions as a system of coupled oscillators. Tomonaga's model of interacting nonrelativistic fermions on a ring is presented and first discussed in low order perturbation theory. After introducing the concept of two independent species of right and left moving fermions the exact solution of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model is discussed in detail. The momentum distribution and spectral functions are calculated using the method of the bosonization of the field operator. The general Luttinger liquid phenomenology is shortly discussed.
We study transport equations for quantum many-particle systems in terms of correlations by applying the general formalism developed in an earlier paper to exactly soluble electron-phonon models. The one-dimensional models considered are the polaron model with a linear energy dispersion for the electrons and a finite number of electrons and the same model including a Fermi sea (Tomonaga-Luttinger model). The inclusion of two-particle correlations shows a significant and systematic improvement in comparison with the usual non-Markovian equations in Born approximation. For example, the improved equations take into account the renormalization of the propagation by the self-energies to second order in the coupling.
