Single-step implementation of high fidelity $n$-bit Toffoli gate

The family of $n$-bit Toffoli gates, with the two-bit Toffoli gate as the figurehead, are of great interest in quantum information as they can be used as universal gates and in quantum error correction, among other things. We present a single-step implementation of arbitrary $n$-bit Toffoli gates (up to a local change of basis), based on resonantly driving a single qubit that has a strong Ising coupling to $n$ other qubits. The setup in the two-qubit case turns out to be identical to the universal Barenco gate. The gate time and error are, in theory, independent of the number of control qubits, scaling better than conventional circuit decompositions. We note that our assumptions, namely strongly coupling $n+1$ qubits and a driving frequency that scales with $n$, may break down for large systems. Still, our protocol could enhance the capabilities of intermediate scale quantum computers, and we discuss the prospects of implementing our protocol on trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and on superconducting circuits. Simulations of the latter platform show that the Toffoli gate with two control bits attains fidelities of above 0.98 even in the presence of decoherence. We also show how similar ideas can be used to make a series of controlled-\textsc{not}-gates in a single step. We show how these can speed up the implementation of quantum error correcting codes and we simulate the encoding steps of the three-qubit bit-flip code and the seven-qubit Steane code.

M$_k$ models: the field theory connection

The M$_k$ models for 1D lattice fermions are characterised by ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry and by an order-$k$ clustering property. This paper highlights connections with quantum field theories (QFTs) in various regimes. At criticality the QFTs are minimal models of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT) - we analyse finite size spectra on open chains with a variety of supersymmetry preserving boundary conditions. Specific staggering perturbations lead to a gapped regime corresponding to massive ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QFT with Chebyshev superpotentials. At `extreme staggering' we uncover a simple physical picture with degenerate supersymmetric vacua and mobile kinks. We connect this kink-picture to the Chebyshev QFTs and use it to derive novel CFT character formulas. For clarity the focus in this paper is on the simplest models, M$_1$, M$_2$ and M$_3$.

Noncompact dynamical symmetry of a spin-orbit coupled oscillator

We explain the finite as well as infinite degeneracy in the spectrum of a particular system of spin-1/2 fermions with spin-orbit coupling in three spatial dimensions. Starting from a generalized Runge-Lenz vector, we explicitly construct a complete set of symmetry operators, which span a noncompact SO(3,2) algebra. The degeneracy of the physical spectrum only involves a particular, infinite, so called singleton representation. In the branch where orbital and spin angular momentum are aligned the full representation appears, constituting a 3D analogue of Landau levels. Anti-aligning the spin leads to a finite degeneracy due to a truncation of the singleton representation. We conclude the paper by constructing the spectrum generating algebra of the problem.

Supersymmetric lattice fermions on the triangular lattice: superfrustration and criticality

We study a model for itinerant, strongly interacting fermions where a judicious tuning of the interactions leads to a supersymmetric Hamiltonian. On the triangular lattice this model is known to exhibit a property called superfrustration, which is characterized by an extensive ground state entropy. Using a combination of numerical and analytical methods we study various ladder geometries obtained by imposing doubly periodic boundary conditions on the triangular lattice. We compare our results to various bounds on the ground state degeneracy obtained in the literature. For all systems we find that the number of ground states grows exponentially with system size. For two of the models that we study we obtain the exact number of ground states by solving the cohomology problem. For one of these, we find that via a sequence of mappings the entire spectrum can be understood. It exhibits a gapped phase at 1/4 filling and a gapless phase at 1/6 filling and phase separation at intermediate fillings. The gapless phase separates into an exponential number of sectors, where the continuum limit of each sector is described by a superconformal field theory.

Spin texture readout of a Moore-Read topological quantum register

We study the composite Charged Spin Texture (CST) over the Moore-Read quantum Hall state that arises when a collection of elementary CSTs are moved to the same location. Following an algebraic approach based on the characteristic pair correlations of the Moore-Read state, we find that the resulting CST is set by the fusion sector of the underlying non-Abelian quasiparticles. This phenomenon provides a novel way to read out the quantum register of a non-Abelian topologically ordered phase.

Exact ground states of a staggered supersymmetric model for lattice fermions

We study a supersymmetric model for strongly interacting lattice fermions in the presence of a staggering parameter. The staggering is introduced as a tunable parameter in the manifestly supersymmetric Hamiltonian. We obtain analytic expressions for the ground states in the limit of small and large staggering for the model on the class of doubly decorated lattices. On this type of lattice there are two ground states, each with a different density. In one limit we find these ground states to be a simple Wigner crystal and a valence bond solid (VBS) state. In the other limit we find two types of quantum liquids. As a special case, we investigate the quantum liquid state on the one dimensional chain in detail. It is characterized by a massless kink that separates two types of order.

Entanglement between particle partitions in itinerant many-particle states

We review `particle partitioning entanglement' for itinerant many-particle systems. This is defined as the entanglement between two subsets of particles making up the system. We identify generic features and mechanisms of particle entanglement that are valid over whole classes of itinerant quantum systems. We formulate the general structure of particle entanglement in many-fermion ground states, analogous to the `area law' for the more usually studied entanglement between spatial regions. Basic properties of particle entanglement are first elucidated by considering relatively simple itinerant models. We then review particle-partitioning entanglement in quantum states with more intricate physics, such as anyonic models and quantum Hall states.

Supersymmetry, lattice fermions, independence complexes and cohomology theory

We analyze the quantum ground state structure of a specific model of itinerant, strongly interacting lattice fermions. The interactions are tuned to make the model supersymmetric. Due to this, quantum ground states are in one-to-one correspondence with cohomology classes of the so-called independence complex of the lattice. Our main result is a complete description of the cohomology, and thereby of the quantum ground states, for a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Our work builds on results by J. Jonsson, who determined the Euler characteristic (Witten index) via a correspondence with rhombus tilings of the plane. We prove a theorem, first conjectured by P. Fendley, which relates dimensions of the cohomology at grade n to the number of rhombus tilings with n rhombi.

Quantum phases of supersymmetric lattice models

We review recent results on lattice models for spin-less fermions with strong repulsive interactions. A judicious tuning of kinetic and interaction terms leads to a model possessing supersymmetry. In the 1D case, this model displays critical behavior described by superconformal field theory. On 2D lattices we generically find superfrustration, characterized by an extensive ground state entropy. For certain 2D lattices analytical results on the ground state structure reveal yet another quantum phase, which we tentatively call 'supertopological'.

Particle partitioning entanglement in itinerant many-particle systems

For itinerant fermionic and bosonic systems, we study `particle entanglement', defined as the entanglement between two subsets of particles making up the system. We formulate the general structure of particle entanglement in many-fermion ground states, analogous to the `area law' for the more usually studied entanglement between spatial regions. Basic properties of particle entanglement are uncovered by considering relatively simple itinerant models.

Bipartite entanglement entropy in fractional quantum Hall states

We present a detailed analysis of bipartite entanglement entropies in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, considering both abelian (Laughlin) and non-abelian (Moore-Read) states. We derive upper bounds for the entanglement between two subsets of the particles making up the state. We also consider the entanglement between spatial regions supporting a FQH state. Using the latter, we show how the so-called topological entanglement entropy of a FQH state can be extracted from wavefunctions for a limited number of particles.

Quantum Hall states of atomic Bose gases: density profiles in single-layer and multi-layer geometries

We describe the density profiles of confined atomic Bose gases in the high-rotation limit, in single-layer and multi-layer geometries. We show that, in a local density approximation, the density in a single layer shows a landscape of quantized steps due to the formation of incompressible liquids, which are analogous to fractional quantum Hall liquids for a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field. In a multi-layered set-up we find different phases, depending on the strength of the inter-layer tunneling t. We discuss the situation where a vortex lattice in the three-dimensional condensate (at large tunneling) undergoes quantum melting at a critical tunneling $t_{c_1}$. For tunneling well below $t_{c_1}$ one expects weakly coupled or isolated layers, each exhibiting a landscape of quantum Hall liquids. After expansion, this gives a radial density distribution with characteristic features (cusps) that provide experimental signatures of the quantum Hall liquids.

Density profiles for atomic quantum Hall states

We analyze density profiles for atomic quantum Hall states, which are expected to form in systems of rotating cold atoms in the high-rotation limit. For a two-dimensional (single-layer) system we predict a density landscape showing plateaus at quantized densities, signaling the formation of incompressible groundstates. For a set-up with parallel, coupled layers, we predict (i) at intermediate values of the inter-layer tunneling: a continuously varying density profile $ρ(z)$ across the layers, showing cusps at specific positions, (ii) at small values for the tunneling, quantum Hall-Mott phases, with individual layers at sharply quantized particle number, and plateaus in the density profile $ρ(z)$.

On the quasiparticle description of c=1 CFTs

We show that the description of $c=1$ Conformal Field Theory in terms of quasiparticles satisfying fractional statistics can be obtained from the sine-Gordon model with a chemical potential $A$, in the limit where $A \gg M$. These quasiparticles are related to the excitations of the Calogero-Sutherland (CS) model. We provide a direct calculation of their 2-particle S-matrix using Korepin's method. We also reconsider the computation of the CS S-matrix in terms of particles with fractional charge.

Rotating spin-1 bosons in the lowest Landau level

We present results for the ground states of a system of spin-1 bosons in a rotating trap. We focus on the dilute, weakly interacting regime, and restrict the bosons to the quantum states in the lowest Landau level (LLL) in the plane (disc), sphere or torus geometries. We map out parts of the zero temperature phase diagram, using both exact quantum ground states and LLL mean field configurations. For the case of a spin-independent interaction we present exact quantum ground states at angular momentum $L\leq N$. For general values of the interaction parameters, we present mean field studies of general ground states at slow rotation and of lattices of vortices and skyrmions at higher rotation rates. Finally, we discuss quantum Hall liquid states at ultra-high rotation.

Quantum Hall states and boson triplet condensate for rotating spin-1 bosons

We propose and analyze two series of clustered quantum Hall states for rotating systems of spin-1 bosons. The first series (labelled SU(4)_k) includes the exact ground states of a model Hamiltonian at large angular momentum L, and also for N=3k particles at L=N. The latter is a spin-singlet boson triplet condensate (BTC). The second series, labelled SO(5)_k, includes exact ground states at large $L$ for different parameter values.

A form factor approach to finite temperature correlation functions in $c=1$ CFT

The excitation spectrum of specific conformal field theories (CFT) with central charge $c=1$ can be described in terms of quasi-particles with charges $Q=-p,+1$ and fractional statistics properties. Using the language of Jack polynomials, we compute form factors of the charge density operator in these CFTs. We study a form factor expansion for the finite temperature density-density correlation function, and find that it shows a quick convergence to the exact result. The low-temperature behavior is recovered from a form factor with $p+1$ particles, while the high-temperature limit is recovered from states containing no more than 3 particles.

Separation of spin and charge in paired spin-singlet quantum Hall states

We propose a series of paired spin-singlet quantum Hall states, which exhibit a separation of spin and charge degrees of freedom. The fundamental excitations over these states, which have filling fraction ν=2/(2m+1) with m an odd integer, are spinons (spin-1/2 and charge zero) or fractional holons (charge +/- 1/(2m+1) and spin zero). The braid statistics of these excitations are non-abelian. The mechanism for the separation of spin and charge in these states is topological: spin and charge excitations are liberated by binding to a vortex in a p-wave pairing condensate. We briefly discuss related, abelian spin-singlet states and possible transitions.
