Radiation safety challenges in plasma accelerators

Plasma accelerators are rapidly evolving toward user-relevant machines with increasing repetition rates, particle energies and average beam powers. Despite their compact size, the operational characteristics of plasma accelerators are comparable to those of radio-frequency linacs, involving the continuous generation and dumping of electron bunches. However, beam properties and loss patterns can differ substantially from those of conventional accelerators, leading to radiation safety considerations dominated by high peak charges and distributed beam losses relevant for both personnel protection and machine integrity. Using established scaling laws, we show that significant dose rates already occur at electron energies of several MeV, underscoring the relevance of radiation protection even for comparatively low-energy plasma accelerators. Based on a combination of Monte Carlo and particle-in-cell simulations, supported by radiation measurements from plasma accelerator experiments at DESY, we analyze typical radiation fields with a particular focus on radiation generated close to the plasma source. These findings highlight the need for dedicated shielding and beam-dump concepts tailored to plasma accelerators, especially in view of increasing average beam powers and future application-oriented operation.

The photon-ion merged-beams experiment PIPE at PETRAIII - The first five years

The Photon-Ion Spectrometer at PETRA III - in short, PIPE - is a permanently installed user facility at the "Variable Polarization XUV Beamline" P04 of the synchrotron light source PETRA III operated by DESY in Hamburg, Germany. The careful design of the PIPE ion-optics in combination with the record-high photon flux at P04 has lead to a breakthrough in experimental studies of photon interactions with ionized small quantum systems. This short review provides an overview over the published scientific results from photon-ion merged-beams experiments at PIPE that were obtained since the start of P04 operations in 2013. The topics covered comprise photoionization of ions of astrophysical relevance, quantitative studies of multi-electron processes upon inner-shell photoexcitation and photoionization of negative and positive atomic ions, precision spectroscopy of photoionization resonances, photoionization and photofragmentation of molecular ions and of endohedral fullerene ions.

Near--K-edge double and triple detachment of the F- negative ion: observation of direct two-electron ejection by a single photon

Double and triple detachment of the F-(1s2 2s2 2p6) negative ion by a single photon have been investigated in the photon energy range 660 to 1000 eV. The experimental data provide unambiguous evidence for the dominant role of direct photo-double-detachment with a subsequent single-Auger process in the reaction channel leading to F2+ product ions. Absolute cross sections were determined for the direct removal of a (1s+2p) pair of electrons from F- by the absorption of a single photon.

Semileptonic B Meson Decays and Interfering Amplitudes

Consequences of the interference between external and internal spectator amplitudes for the lifetimes and semileptonic decay fractions of $B^0$ and $B^+$ mesons are discussed. Extrapolating from the constructive interference observed in 11 exclusive hadronic $B$ decays we find an inclusive semileptonic decay fraction of $(11.2 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.7)$\%, significantly closer to the experimental results than previous predictions.

The Semileptonic Decay Fraction of B Mesons in the Light of Interfering Amplitudes

Consequences of the interference between spectator amplitudes for the lifetimes and semileptonic decay fractions of B^0 and B^+ mesons are discussed. Assuming duality and constructive interference between spectator amplitudes we are able to explain the low experimental value for the semileptonic decay fraction of $B$ mesons. Extracting these amplitudes from a fit to 11 exclusive hadronic B decay fractions we find a_1 = 1.05 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.10, a_2 =+0.227 +/ 0.012 +/- 0.022, an inclusive semileptonic decay fraction of (11.2 +/- 0.5 +/- 1.7), and a lifetime ratio tau(B^+) / tau(B^0) = 0.83 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.01.
