Third-order correction to top-quark pair production near threshold I. Effective theory set-up and matching coefficients

This is the first in a series of papers, in which we compute the third-order QCD corrections to top-antitop production near threshold in e+ e- collisions. The present paper provides a detailed outline of the strategy of computation in the framework of non-relativistic effective theory and the threshold expansion, applicable more generally to heavy-quark pair production near threshold. It summarizes matching coefficients and potentials relevant to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order and ends with the master formula for the computation of the third-order Green function. The master formula is evaluated in part II of the series.

Third-order non-Coulomb correction to the S-wave quarkonium wave functions at the origin

We compute the third-order correction to the S-wave quarkonium wave functions |ψ_n(0)|^2 at the origin from non-Coulomb potentials in the effective non-relativistic Lagrangian. Together with previous results on the Coulomb correction and the ultrasoft correction computed in a companion paper, this completes the third-order calculation up to a few unknown matching coefficients. Numerical estimates of the new correction for bottomonium and toponium are given.

NNNLO results on top-quark pair production near threshold

We present new results on the NNNLO top-antitop production cross section near threshold from potential and ultrasoft gluon corrections. The new non-logarithmic third-order terms are in the 10% range and lead to a significant reduction in the theoretical error.

Third-order Coulomb corrections to the S-wave Green function, energy levels and wave functions at the origin

We obtain analytic expressions for the third-order corrections due to the strong interaction Coulomb potential to the S-wave Green function, energy levels and wave functions at the origin for arbitrary principal quantum number n. Together with the known non-Coulomb correction this results in the complete spectrum of S-states up to order alpha_s^5. The numerical impact of these corrections on the Upsilon spectrum and the top quark pair production cross section near threshold is estimated.
