A mechanism of macroscopic rigid-body behavior through evanescent mode

It has been numerically found that the setup of Newton's cradle can exhibit a rigid-body like behavior, that is, the target cluster starts to move collectively without emitting the outermost particle if the purely repulsive interaction between the neighbouring particles is very "soft" [KS, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 124302 (2010)]. We show theoretically that such an interaction leads to an evanescent mode within the cluster, which delivers the momentum within the cluster without any propagating oscillation.

Influence of nanoparticles mechanical properties on macrocracks formation

We present an experimental investigation of drying suspensions of both hard and soft nanolatex spheres. The crack formation is examined as a function of the proportion of hard and soft deformable particles, leading to tunable elastic properties of the drying film. In our experiments corresponding to a given layer thickness, no crack formation could be observed below an onset value of the proportion in hard spheres around 0.45. During the drying process, the mass of films with various compositions in hard and soft spheres is measured as a function of time. The results suggest that the soft particles undergo deformation that releases the internal stresses. The spacing between cracks is measured as a function of the layer thickness for various compositions in hard and soft spheres.

Non-commutative reading of the complex plane through Delone sequences

The Berezin-Klauder-Toeplitz ("anti-Wick") quantization or "non-commutative reading" of the complex plane, viewed as the phase space of a particle moving on the line, is derived from the resolution of the unity provided by the standard (or gaussian) coherent states. The construction properties of these states and their attractive properties are essentially based on the energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator, that is on the natural numbers. This work is an attempt for following the same path by considering sequences of non-negative numbers which are not "too far" from the natural numbers. In particular, we examine the consequences of such perturbations on the non-commutative reading of the complex plane in terms of its probabilistic, functional, and localization aspects.

Irreversibility resulting from contact with a heat bath caused by the finiteness of the system

When a small dynamical system that is initially in contact with a heat bath is detached from this heat bath and then caused to undergo a quasi-static adiabatic processes, the statistical distribution of the system's energy differs from that of an equilibrium ensemble. Subsequent contact of the system with another heat bath is inevitably irreversible, hence the entire process cannot be reversed without a net energy transfer to the heat baths.

History Memorized and Recalled upon Glass Transition

The memory effect upon glassification is studied in the glass to rubber transition of vulcanized rubber with the strain as a controlling parameter. A phenomenological model is proposed taking the history of the temperature and the strain into account, by which the experimental results are interpreted. The data and the model demonstrate that the glassy state memorizes the time-course of strain upon glassification, not as a single parameter but as the history itself. The data also show that the effect of irreversible deformation in the glassy state is beyond the scope of the present model. Authors' remark: The title of the paper in the accepted version is above. The title appeared in PRL is the one changed by a Senior Assistant Editor after acceptance of the paper. The recovery of the title was rejected in the correction process.
