Fermi-liquid versus non-Fermi-liquid/'strange-metal' fits to the electrical resistivity in the quantum critical magnetic regime of an unconventional superconductor

The question of a possible quantum critical point lying inside of a superconducting phase is central for understanding unconventional superconductivity. In various unconventional superconductors, non-Fermi-liquid/'strange-metal' $T^{n}$ variations, with $n<2$, of the electrical resistivity have been identified as the signature of magnetic quantum criticality. However, a difficulty is to prove experimentally that a non-Fermi-liquid/'strange-metal' law identified at temperatures above the superconducting temperature is the signature of an intrinsic zero-temperature quantum critical regime. In the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$, unconventional superconductivity develops in the vicinity of a metamagnetic quantum phase transition induced by a magnetic field, and the quantum critical magnetic properties are suspected to play a role for the superconducting mechanism. In this work, we present a comparative analysis of electrical resistivity data collected on two UTe$_2$ samples of different qualities, in magnetic fields tilted by angles $\theta\simeq35-40$~$^\circ$ from $\mathbf{b}$ to $\mathbf{c}$. Fits to the data have been performed either with a Fermi-liquid function $\rho=\rho_0+AT^{2}$ or with a non-Fermi-liquid/'strange-metal' function $\rho=\rho_0+A_nT^n$. Near to a superconducting phase induced beyond 40~T, non-physical residual resistivities $\rho_0<0$ are extracted from the $T^n$ fits, revealing that a 'hidden' Fermi-liquid $T^2$ regime may be ultimately recovered at low temperature. The results obtained here highlight the importance to investigate high-quality samples with low residual resistivity to confirm - or not - the presence of a suspected 'hidden' quantum critical behavior masked by superconductivity.

Anisotropic collapse of electronic correlations in the ferromagnet UGe$_2$ under high magnetic field

We present electrical-resistivity measurements on the prototypical heavy-fermion ferromagnet UGe$_2$ under pulsed magnetic field up to 60~T. An anisotropic field-induced suppression of the electronic correlations is revealed. The electrical resistivity strongly decreases when a magnetic field $\mathbf{H}$ is applied along the easy magnetic axis $\mathbf{a}$, while it remains almost unchanged when $\mathbf{H}$ is applied along the hard magnetic axes $\mathbf{b}$ and $\mathbf{c}$. The field-induced destabilization of the ferromagnetic state is also anisotropic: the anomaly at the Curie temperature $T_C$ disappears in fields higher than $\gtrsim1$~T for $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$ and in fields higher than $\gtrsim20$~T for $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{b},\mathbf{c}$. At temperatures below 2~K, we observe quantum oscillations in fields larger than 50~T applied along $\mathbf{b}$, which support the presence of a two-dimensional Fermi surface similar to that previously observed at low fields.

Proximate spin-liquid behavior in the double trillium lattice antiferromagnet K$_2$Co$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$

We report proximate quantum spin liquid behavior in K$_2$Co$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ with the magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions embedded on a highly frustrated three-dimensional double trillium lattice. Single-crystal and high-resolution synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction experiments reveal a structural phase transition at $T_{\rm t} \simeq 125$ K from high-temperature cubic to low-temperature monoclinic phase with the three-fold superstructure. Magnetization and heat capacity consistently show the formation of the $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ state of Co$^{2+}$ below 50 K. In zero field, K$_2$Co$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ shows signatures of static magnetic order formed below $T^* \simeq 0.6$ K, but muon spin relaxation experiments reveal a large fluctuating component that persists down to at least 50 mK, reminiscent of quantum spin liquid (QSL). Static order is completely suppressed in the small magnetic field of $\sim 1$ T, and low-temperature heat capacity demonstrates the $T^2$ behavior above this field, another fingerprint of QSL. Ab initio calculations show a competition of several antiferromagnetic couplings that render K$_2$Co$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$ a promising pseudospin-$\frac12$ material for studying quantum magnetism in the double trillium lattice geometry.

Boosted magnetic fluctuations at the onset of superconductivity in UTe$_2$ beyond 40 T

Several unconventional superconducting phases have been discovered close to a metamagnetic transition in the heavy-fermion compound UTe$_2$. Although suspected to be of magnetic nature, the mechanisms stabilizing these superconducting phases remain mysterious. Here, we present electrical-resistivity measurements on UTe$_2$, with a current $\mathbf{I}\parallel\mathbf{a}$ and under pulsed magnetic fields up to 60~T rotating in the ($\mathbf{b}$,$\mathbf{c}$) plane. We find that the maximum of the Fermi-liquid coefficient $A$ at the metamagnetic transition is enhanced under magnetic fields tilted by $30-40~^\circ$ from $\mathbf{b}$ to $\mathbf{c}$. The enhancement of $A$ coincides with the stabilization of superconductivity in the polarized paramagnetic regime beyond the metamagnetic field $\mu_0H_m\gtrsim40$~T. It is the signature of a boosted quantum-critical magnetic-fluctuation mode probably in play for the mechanism of this superconducting phase. This result appeals for descriptions of the interplay between magnetic-field-induced superconductivity and quantum critical magnetic properties.

Absence of magnetic order and emergence of unconventional fluctuations in $J_{\rm eff} =1/2$ triangular lattice antiferromagnet YbBO$_3$

We present the ground state properties of a new quantum antiferromagnet YbBO$_3$ in which the isotropic Yb$^{3+}$ triangular layers are separated by a non-magnetic layer of partially occupied B and O(2) sites. The magnetization and heat capacity data establish a spin-orbit entangled effective spin $J_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ state of Yb$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures, interacting antiferromagnetically with an intra-layer coupling $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.53$ K. The absence of oscillations and a $1/3$ tail in the zero-field muon asymmetries rule out the onset of magnetic long-range-order as well as spin-freezing down to 20~mK. An anomalous broad maximum in the temperature dependent heat capacity with a unusually reduced value and a broad anomaly in zero-field muon depolarization rate centered at $T^*\simeq 0.7 \frac{J}{k_{\rm B}}$ provide compelling evidence for a wide fluctuating regime ($0.182 \leq T/J \leq 1.63$) with slow relaxation. We infer that the fluctuating regime is a universal feature of a highly frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnets while the absence of magnetic long-range-order is due to perfect two-dimensionality of the spin-lattice protected by non-magnetic site disorder.

Quantum magnetism of ferromagnetic spin dimers in $α$-KVOPO$_4$

Magnetism of the spin-$\frac12$ $α$-KVOPO$_4$ is studied by thermodynamic measurements, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq 15.9$ K and the saturation field of $μ_0H_s\simeq 11.3$ T suggest the predominant ferromagnetic coupling augmented by a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange that leads to a short-range order below 5 K and the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 2.7$ K in zero field. Magnetic structure with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(0,\frac12,0)$ and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.58 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K exposes a non-trivial spin lattice where strong ferromagnetic dimers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The reduction in the ordered magnetic moment with respect to the classical value (1 $μ_{\rm B}$) indicates sizable quantum fluctuations in this setting, despite the predominance of ferromagnetic exchange. We interpret this tendency toward ferromagnetism as arising from the effective orbital order in the folded chains of the VO$_6$ octahedra.

Universal fluctuating regime in triangular chromate antiferromagnets

We report x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, $^{1}$H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations for the frustrated $S=3/2$ triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) $α$-HCrO$_{2}$ (trigonal, space group: $R\bar{3}m$). This compound undergoes a clear magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \simeq 22.5$~K, as seen from the drop in the muon paramagnetic fraction and concurrent anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Local probes (NMR and $μ$SR) reveal a broad regime with slow fluctuations down to $0.7\,T_{\rm N}$, this temperature corresponding to the maximum in the $μ$SR relaxation rate and in the NMR wipe-out. From the comparison with NaCrO$_{2}$ and $α$-KCrO$_{2}$, the fluctuating regime and slow dynamics below $T_{\rm N}$ appear to be hallmarks of the TLHAF with $ABC$ stacking that leads to a frustration of interlayer couplings between the triangular planes. This interlayer frustration is a powerful lever to generate spin states with persistent dynamics and may bear implications to spin-liquid candidates with the triangular geometry.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in the spin-$\frac12$ antiferromagnet BaNa$_{2}$Cu(VO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{\rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{\perp}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$.
