A rule of thumb for riffle shuffling

We study how many riffle shuffles are required to mix n cards if only certain features of the deck are of interest, e.g. suits disregarded or only the colors of interest. For these features, the number of shuffles drops from 3/2 log_2(n) to log_2(n). We derive closed formulae and an asymptotic `rule of thumb' formula which is remarkably accurate.

Riffle shuffles of a deck with repeated cards

We study the Gilbert-Shannon-Reeds model for riffle shuffles and ask 'How many times must a deck of cards be shuffled for the deck to be in close to random order?'. In 1992, Bayer and Diaconis gave a solution which gives exact and asymptotic results for all decks of practical interest, e.g. a deck of 52 cards. But what if one only cares about the colors of the cards or disregards the suits focusing solely on the ranks? More generally, how does the rate of convergence of a Markov chain change if we are interested in only certain features? Our exploration of this problem takes us through random walks on groups and their cosets, discovering along the way exact formulas leading to interesting combinatorics, an 'amazing matrix', and new analytic methods which produce a completely general asymptotic solution that is remarkable accurate.

Quantum unique ergodicity for SL_2(Z)\H

We eliminate the possibility of "escape of mass" for Hecke-Maass forms of large eigenvalue for the modular group. Combined with the work of Lindenstrauss, this establishes the Quantum Unique Ergodicity conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak for the modular surface SL_2(Z)\H.

On the distribution of imaginary parts of zeros of the Riemann zeta function, II

We continue our investigation of the distribution of the fractional parts of $a γ$, where $a$ is a fixed non-zero real number and $γ$ runs over the imaginary parts of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We establish some connections to pair correlation functions and the distribution of primes in short intervals. We also discuss analogous results for a more general L-function. This is a sequel to the paper math.NT/0405459.

Weak subconvexity for central values of $L$-functions

We describe a general method to obtain weak subconvexity bounds for many classes of $L$-functions. This has applications to a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak for the mass equidistribution of Hecke eigenforms (see arxiv.org:math/0809.1636).

Mass equidistribution for Hecke eigenforms

We prove a conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak on the mass equidistribution of Hecke eigenforms. This builds upon independent work of the authors see arxiv.org:math/0809.1640 and arxiv.org:math/0809.1635.

Partial sums of the M{ö}bius function

Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis we establish an upper bound for the sum of the M{\" o}bius function up to $x$. Our method is based on estimating the frequency with which intervals of a given length can contain an unusual number of ordinates of zeros of the Riemann zeta-function.

Moments of the Riemann zeta-function

Assuming the Riemann Hypothesis we obtain an upper bound for the moments of the Riemann zeta-function on the critical line. Our bound is nearly as sharp as the conjectured asymptotic formulae for these moments. The method extends to moments in families of $L$-functions.

The number of imaginary quadratic fields with a given class number

We investigate the number ${\Cal F}(h)$ of imaginary quadratic fields with class number $h$. We establish an asymptotic formula for the average value of ${\Cal F}(h)$. We also establish a modest non-trivial upper bound for ${\Cal F}(h)$ and give an application to a question of Rosen and Silverman on the odd part of the class number. Finally, we speculate on the asymptotic nature of ${\Cal F}(h)$.

The distribution of smooth numbers in arithmetic progressions

For a wide range of $x$ and $y$ we show that ${\Cal S}(x,y)$, the set of integers below $x$ composed only of prime factors below $y$, is equidistributed in the reduced residue classes $\pmod q$ for all $q<y^{4\sqrt{e}-ε}$. This improves earlier work of Granville; any improvement of this range of $q$ would have interesting consequences for Vinogradov's conjecture on the least quadratic non-residue. For larger ranges of $q$ we prove the existence of a large subgroup of the group of reduced residues such that ${\Cal S}(x,y)$ is equidistributed within cosets of that subgroup.

Pretentious multiplicative functions and an inequality for the zeta-function

We note how several central results in multiplicative number theory may be rephrased naturally in terms of multiplicative functions $f$ that pretend to be another multiplicative function $g$. We formalize a `distance' which gives a measure of such {\sl pretentiousness}, and as one consequence obtain a curious inequality for the zeta-function.

Benford's law for the $3x+1$ function

We show that for most choices of an initial seed $x_0$, the sequence of the first $N$ iterates of $x_0$ under the $3x+1$ map approximately satisfies Benford's law.

Sieving and the Erd{\H o}s-Kac theorem

We give a relatively easy proof of the Erd\H os-Kac theorem via computing moments. We show how this proof extends naturally in a sieve theory context, and how it leads to several related results in the literature.
