Small noise perturbations of stochastic ergodic control problems

Using small noise limit approach, we study degenerate stochastic ergodic control problems and as a byproduct obtain error bounds for the $\varepsilon$-optimal controls. We also establish tunneling for a special ergodic control problem and give a representation of the ergodic value using the tunneled Markov chain.

Nonzero-Sum Risk-Sensitive Stochastic Differential Games: A Multi-parameter Eigenvalue Problem Approach

We study nonzero-sum stochastic differential games with risk-sensitive ergodic cost criterion. Under certain conditions, using multi-parameter eigenvalue approach, we establish the existence of a Nash equilibrium in the space of stationary Markov strategies. We achieve our results by studying the relevant systems of coupled HJB equations. Exploiting the stochastic representation of the principal eigenfunctions we completely characterize Nash equilibrium points in the space of stationary Markov strategies.

A variational characterization of the risk-sensitive average reward for controlled diffusions on $\mathbb{R}^d$

We address the variational formulation of the risk-sensitive reward problem for non-degenerate diffusions on $\mathbb{R}^d$ controlled through the drift. We establish a variational formula on the whole space and also show that the risk-sensitive value equals the generalized principal eigenvalue of the semilinear operator. This can be viewed as a controlled version of the variational formulas for principal eigenvalues of diffusion operators arising in large deviations. We also revisit the average risk-sensitive minimization problem and by employing a gradient estimate developed in this paper, we extend earlier results to unbounded drifts and running costs.

Simultaneous Small Noise Limit for Singularly Perturbed Slow-Fast Coupled Diffusions

We consider a simultaneous small noise limit for a singularly perturbed coupled diffusion described by \begin{eqnarray*} dX^{\varepsilon}_t &=& b(X^{\varepsilon}_t, Y^{\varepsilon}_t)dt + \varepsilon^αdB_t, dY^{\varepsilon}_t &=& - \frac{1}{\varepsilon} \nabla_yU(X^{\varepsilon}_t, Y^{\varepsilon}_t)dt + \frac{s(\varepsilon)}{\sqrt{\varepsilon}} dW_t, \end{eqnarray*} where $B_t, W_t$ are independent Brownian motions on ${\mathbb R}^d$ and ${\mathbb R}^m$ respectively, $b : \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}^m \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^d$, $U : \mathbb{R}^d \times \mathbb{R}^m \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ and $s :(0,\infty) \rightarrow (0,\infty)$. We impose regularity assumptions on $b$, $U$ and let $0 < α< 1.$ When $s(\varepsilon)$ goes to zero slower than a prescribed rate as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$, we characterize all weak limit points of $X^{\varepsilon}$, as $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$, as solutions to a differential equation driven by a measurable vector field. Under an additional assumption on the behaviour of $U(x, \cdot)$ at its global minima we characterize all limit points as Filippov solutions to the differential equation.

Nonzero-sum risk-sensitive stochastic differential games

We study two person nonzero-sum stochastic differential games with risk-sensitive discounted and ergodic cost criteria. Under certain conditions we establish a Nash equilibrium in Markov strategies for the discounted cost criterion and a Nash equilibrium in stationary strategies for the ergodic cost criterion. We achieve our results by studying the relevant systems of coupled HJB equations.

Zero-sum Risk-sensitive Stochastic Games for Continuous Time Markov Chains

We study infinite horizon discounted-cost and ergodic-cost risk-sensitive zero-sum stochastic games for controlled continuous time Markov chains on a countable state space. For the discounted-cost game we prove the existence of value and saddle-point equilibrium in the class of Markov strategies under nominal conditions. For the ergodic-cost game we prove the existence of values and saddle point equilibrium by studying the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation under a certain Lyapunov condition.

Nonzero-Sum Risk Sensitive Stochastic Games for Continuous Time Markov Chains

We study nonzero-sum stochastic games for continuous time Markov chains on a denumerable state space with risk sensitive discounted and ergodic cost criteria. For the discounted cost criterion we first show that the corresponding system of coupled HJB equations has an appropriate solution. Then under an additional additive structure on the transition rate matrix and payoff functions, we establish the existence of a Nash equilibrium in Markov strategies. For the ergodic cost criterion we assume a Lyapunov type stability assumption and a small cost condition. Under these assumptions we show that the corresponding system of coupled HJB equations admits a solution which leads to the existence of Nash equilibrium in stationary strategies.

Risk-Sensitive Control and an Abstract Collatz-Wielandt Formula

The "value" of infinite horizon risk-sensitive control is the principal eigenvalue of a certain positive operator. This facilitates the use of Chang's extension of the Collatz-Wielandt formula to derive a variational characterization thereof. For the uncontrolled case, this reduces to the Donsker-Varadhan functional.

Convergence of The Relative Value Iteration for the Ergodic Control Problem of Nondegenerate Diffusions under Near-Monotone Costs

We study the relative value iteration for the ergodic control problem under a near-monotone running cost structure for a nondegenerate diffusion controlled through its drift. This algorithm takes the form of a quasilinear parabolic Cauchy initial value problem in $\RR^{d}$. We show that this Cauchy problem stabilizes, or in other words, that the solution of the quasilinear parabolic equation converges for every bounded initial condition in $\Cc^{2}(\RR^{d})$ to the solution of the Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman (HJB) equation associated with the ergodic control problem.

Relative Value Iteration for Stochastic Differential Games

We study zero-sum stochastic differential games with player dynamics governed by a nondegenerate controlled diffusion process. Under the assumption of uniform stability, we establish the existence of a solution to the Isaac's equation for the ergodic game and characterize the optimal stationary strategies. The data is not assumed to be bounded, nor do we assume geometric ergodicity. Thus our results extend previous work in the literature. We also study a relative value iteration scheme that takes the form of a parabolic Isaac's equation. Under the hypothesis of geometric ergodicity we show that the relative value iteration converges to the elliptic Isaac's equation as time goes to infinity. We use these results to establish convergence of the relative value iteration for risk-sensitive control problems under an asymptotic flatness assumption.

A Risk-Sensitive Portfolio Optimization Problem with Fixed Incomes Securities

We discuss a class of risk-sensitive portfolio optimization problems. We consider the portfolio optimization model investigated by Nagai in 2003. The model by its nature can include fixed income securities as well in the portfolio. Under fairly general conditions, we prove the existence of optimal portfolio in both finite and infinite horizon problems.
