Importance of dxy orbital and electron correlation in iron-based superconductors revealed by phase diagram for 1111-system

The structural flexibility at three substitution sites in LaFeAsO enabled investigation of the relation between superconductivity and structural parameters over a wide range of crystal compositions. Substitutions of Nd for La, Sb or P for As, and F or H for O were performed. All these substitutions modify the local structural parameters, while the F/H-substitution also changes band filling. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ is strongly affected by the pnictogen height $h_{Pn}$ from the Fe-plane that controls the electron correlation strength and the size of the $d_{xy}$ hole Fermi surface (FS). With increasing $h_{Pn}$, weak coupling superconductivity switches to the strong coupling one where the $d_{xy}$ hole FS is crucially important.

Evidence of a structural quantum critical point in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ from a lattice dynamics study

Approaching a quantum critical point (QCP) has been an effective route to stabilize superconductivity. While the role of magnetic QCPs has been extensively discussed, similar exploration of a structural QCP is scarce due to the lack of suitable systems with a continuous structural transition that can be conveniently tuned to 0~K. Using inelastic X-ray scattering, we examine the phonon spectrum of the nonmagnetic quasi-skutterudite (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which represents a precious system to explore the interplay between structural instabilities and superconductivity by tuning the Ca concentration $x$. We unambiguously detect the softening of phonon modes around the M point on cooling towards the structural transition. Intriguingly, at $x=0.85$, the soft mode energy squared at the M point extrapolates to zero at $(-5.7 \pm 7.7)$~K, providing the first compelling microscopic evidence of a structural QCP in (Ca$_{x}$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. The enhanced phonon density-of-states at low energy provides the essential ingredient for realizing strong-coupling superconductivity near the structural QCP.

Extremely large magnetoresistance and the complete determination of the Fermi surface topology in the semimetal ScSb

We report the magnetoresistance of ScSb, which is a semimetal with a simple rocksalt-type structure. We found that the magnetoresistance reaches $\sim$28000 % at 2 K and 14 T in our best sample, and it exhibits a resistivity plateau at low temperatures. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations extracted from the magnetoresistance data allow the full construction of the Fermi surface, including the so-called $α_3$ pocket which has been missing in other closely related monoantimonides, and an additional hole pocket centered at $Γ$. The electron concentration ($n$) and the hole concentration ($p$) are extracted from our analysis, which indicate that ScSb is a nearly compensated semimetal with $n/p\approx0.93$. The calculated band structure indicates the absence of a band inversion, and the large magnetoresistance in ScSb can be attributed to the nearly perfect compensation of electrons and holes, despite the existence of the additional hole pocket.

Anisotropic two-gap superconductivity and the absence of a Pauli paramagnetic limit in single-crystalline LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$

Ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}\sim$3K possesses a highly anisotropic normal state. By a series of electrical resistivity measurements with a magnetic field direction varying between the crystalline $c$-axis and the $ab$-plane, we present the first datasets displaying the temperature dependence of the out-of-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\perp}(T)$, the in-plane upper critical field $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$, as well as the angular dependence of $H_{c2}$ at fixed temperatures for ambient-pressure-grown LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ single crystals. The anisotropy of the superconductivity, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}/H_{c2}^{\perp}$, reaches $\sim$16 on approaching 0 K, but it decreases significantly near $T_{c}$. A pronounced upward curvature of $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T)$ is observed near $T_{c}$, which we analyze using a two-gap model. Moreover, $H_{c2}^{\parallel}(0)$ is found to exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit, which can be understood by considering the strong spin-orbit coupling associated with Bi as well as the breaking of the local inversion symmetry at the electronically active BiS$_2$ bilayers. Hence, LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$ with a centrosymmetric lattice structure is a unique platform to explore the physics associated with local parity violation in the bulk crystal.

Nearly isotropic superconductivity in layered Weyl semimetal WTe$_2$ at 98.5 kbar

Layered transition metal dichalcogenide WTe$_2$ has recently attracted significant attention due to the discovery of an extremely large magnetoresistance, a predicted type-II Weyl semimetallic state, and the pressure-induced superconducting state. By a careful measurement of the superconducting upper critical fields as a function of the magnetic field angle at a pressure as high as 98.5 kbar, we provide the first detailed examination of the dimensionality of the superconducting condensate in WTe$_2$. Despite the layered crystal structure, the upper critical field exhibits a negligible field anisotropy. The angular dependence of the upper critical field can be satisfactorily described by the anisotropic mass model from 2.2 K ($T/T_c\sim0.67$) to 0.03 K ($T/T_c\sim0.01$), with a practically identical anisotropy factor $γ\sim1.7$. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, determined for both $H\perp ab$ and $H\parallel ab$, can be understood by a conventional orbital depairing mechanism. Comparison of the upper critical fields along the two orthogonal field directions results in the same value of $γ\sim1.7$, leading to a temperature independent anisotropy factor from near $T_c$ to $<0.01T_c$. Our findings thus identify WTe$_2$ as a nearly isotropic superconductor, with an anisotropy factor among one of the lowest known in superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides.

Multiple Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations and Novel Evolution of Tc in Iron-based superconductors LaFe(As1-xPx)(O1-yFy) revealed by 31P-NMR Studies

We report on 31P-NMR studies of LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_{y}) over wide compositions for 0<x<1 and 0<y<0.14, which provide clear evidence that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFMSFs) are one of the indispensable elements for enhancing Tc. Systematic 31P-NMR measurements revealed two types of AFMSFs in the temperature evolution, that is, one is the AFMSFs that develop rapidly down to Tc with low-energy characteristics, and the other, with relatively higher energy than the former, develops gradually upon cooling from high temperature. The low-energy AFMSFs in low y (electron doping) over a wide x (pnictogen height suppression) range are associated with the two orbitals of d_{xz/yz}, whereas the higher-energy ones for a wide y region around low x originate from the three orbitals of d_{xy} and d_{xz/yz}. We remark that the nonmonotonic variation of Tc as a function of x and y in LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) is attributed to these multiple AFMSFs originating from degenerated multiple 3d orbitals inherent to Fe-pnictide superconductors.

Evolution of the Phase Diagram of LaFeP$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$O$_{1-y}$F$_{y}$ ($y$ = 0 -- 0.1)

P/As-substitution effects on the transport properties of polycrystalline LaFeP$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$O$_{1-y}$F$_{y}$ with $x$ = 0 -- 1.0 and $y$ = 0 -- 0.1 have been studied. In the F-free samples ($y$ = 0), a new superconducting (SC) dome with a maximum $T_{c}$ of 12 K is observed around $x$ = 0 -- 0.3. This is separated from another SC dome with $T_{c}$ $\sim$10 K at $x$ = 0.6 -- 0.8 by an antiferromagnetic region ($x$ = 0.3 -- 0.6), giving a two-dome feature in the $T_{c}-x$ phase diagram. As $y$ increases, the two SC domes merge together, changing to a double peak structure at $y$ = 0.05 and a single dome at $y$ = 0.1. This proves the presence of two different Fermi surface states in this system.

Emergence of Novel Antiferromagnetic Order Intervening between Two Superconducting Phases in LaFe(As_1-x_P_x_)O: 31P-NMR Studies

We revealed novel phase deagram of Fe-pnictide high-Tc superconductor LaFe(As_{1-x}P_{x})O in wide doping level (0.3<x<1) by P-NMR. Systematic 31P-NMR studies revealed the emergence of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase (AFM-2) in 0.4 < x < 0.7 that intervenes between two superconductivity (SC-1/SC-2) phases. The 31P-NMR Knight shift points to the appearance of the sharp density of states at the Fermi level that is derived from d_{3Z^2?r^2} orbit, which is less relevant with the onset of the SC-2. On the other hand, we remark that the AFM spin fluctuations arising from the interband nesting on the d_{XZ}/d_{YZ} orbits must be a key ingredient for the occurrence of SC around AFM-2.

Enhancement of Superconducting Transition Temperature Due to Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in Iron-pnictides LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) : 31P-NMR Studies

Systematic P-NMR studies on LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) with y=0.05 and 0.1 have revealed that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFMSFs) at low energies are markedly enhanced around x=0.6 and 0.4, respectively, and as a result, Tc exhibits respective peaks at 24 K and 27 K against the P-substitution for As. This result demonstrates that the AFMSFs are responsible for the increase in Tc for LaFe(As_{1-x}P_x)(O_{1-y}F_y) as a primary mediator of the Cooper pairing. From a systematic comparison of AFMSFs with a series of (La_{1-z}Y_z)FeAsO_δ compounds in which Tc reaches 50 K for z=0.95, we remark that a moderate development of AFMSFs causes the Tc to increase up to 50 K under the condition that the local lattice parameters of FeAs tetrahedron approaches those of the regular tetrahedron. We propose that the T_c of Fe-pnictides exceeding 50 K is maximized under an intimate collaboration of the AFMSFs and other factors originating from the optimization of the local structure.
