Realization of 2D Spin-orbit Interaction and Exotic Topological Orders in Cold Atoms

Majorana zero bound mode exists in the vortex core of a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor or superfluid, which can be driven from an s-wave pairing state by two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We propose here a novel scheme based on realistic cold atom platforms to generate 2D SO interactions in a blue-detuned square optical lattice, and predict both the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral topological superfluid phase in the experimentally accessible parameter regimes. This work opens a new direction with experimental feasibility to observe non-Abelian topological orders in cold atom systems.

Non-Abelian Majorana Doublets in Time-Reversal Invariant Topological Superconductor

The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show interestingly that, due to the protection of time-reversal symmetry, non-Abelian statistics can be obtained in 1D TRI topological superconductors and may have advantages in applying to topological quantum computation. Furthermore, we unveil an intriguing phenomenon in the Josephson effect, that the periodicity of Josephson currents depends on the fermion parity of the superconducting state. This effect provides direct measurements of the topological qubit states in such 1D TRI superconductors.

Detecting Topological Phases in Cold Atoms

Chern insulators are band insulators which exhibit a gap in the bulk and gapless excitations in the edge. Detection of Chern insulators is a serious challenge in cold atoms since the Hall transport measurements are technically unrealistic for neutral atoms. By establishing a natural correspondence between the time-reversal invariant topological insulator and quantum anomalous Hall system, we show for a class of Chern insulators that the topology can be determined by only measuring Bloch eigenstates at highly symmetric points of the Brillouin zone (BZ). Furthermore, we introduce two experimental schemes including the spin-resolved Bloch oscillation to carry out the measurement. These schemes are highly feasible under realistic experimental conditions. Our results may provide a powerful tool to detect topological phases in cold atoms.

Majorana Fermion Induced Non-local Current Correlations in Spin-orbit Coupled Superconducting Wires

Recent observation of zero bias conductance peaks in semiconductor wire/superconductor heterostructures has generated great interest, and there is a hot debate on whether the observation is associated with Majorana fermions (MFs). Here we study the local and crossed Andreev reflections in a junction of two normal leads and a sandwiched superconductor-semiconductor wire with two spatially separated but strongly coupled MF end states. The conductance and Fano factors of such a device are sharply different from the topologically trivial case even in the presence of disorder, and can hence be used to identify MFs unambiguously.

Probing Majorana Flat Bands in Nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave Superconductors with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

We show that Majorana fermions associated with Majorana flat bands emerge as zero energy modes on the [110] edge of single layer or multilayer nodal superconductors with $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing and Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, as long as the global inversion symmetry of the single layer or multilayer superconductor is broken, and in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field parallel to the [110] edge, the Majorana fermions together with usual fermionic Andreev bound states induce a triple-peak structure in tunnelling spectroscopy experiments. Importantly, we show that the zero bias conductance peak is induced by Majorana fermions. Therefore, tunnelling spectroscopy can be used to probe Majorana fermions in nodal $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors.

Magnetic impurities on the surface of topological superconductor

We consider the effects of magnetic impurities on the surface of superconducting Cu doped $Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ in the odd parity pairing phase which support topologically protected Majorana fermions surface states with linear spectrum. We show that a single magnetic impurity on the surface may induce a pair of in-gap localized bound states. The energy of the in-gap state is extremely sensitive to the orientation of the magnetic impurity due to the so-called Ising properties of Majorana fermions. The magnetic impurity induced spin-texture, which can be measured using spin sensitive STM, is calculated. We also show that the RKKY interactions between magnetic impurities mediated via the Majorana fermions are always ferromagnetic and dense enough magnetic impurities will develop long-range magnetic order and break the time-reversal symmetry on the material surface eventually.

Majorana Kramers Doublets in $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave Superconductors with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

In this work, we show that a quasi-one-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a DIII class, time-reversal invariant, topological superconductor (TS) which supports a Majorana Kramers Doublet (MKD) at each end of the TS. A MKD is a pair of Majorana end states (MESs) protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). An external magnetic field breaks TRS and drives the system from DIII to D class in which case a single MES appears at each end of the TS. We show that a MKD induces resonant Andreev reflection with zero bias conductance peak of $4e^2/h$. Experimental realizations of the proposed model are discussed.

Majorana Flat Bands and Uni-directional Majorana Edge States in Gapless Topological Superconductors

In this work, we show that an in-plane magnetic field can drive a fully gapped $p \pm i p$ topological superconductor into a gapless phase which supports symmetry protected Majorana edge states (MESs). Specifically, an in-plane magnetic field can close the bulk gap and create zero energy Majorana flat bands (MFBs) in the excitation spectrum. We show that the MFBs in the gapless regime are protected by symmetry and are associated with MESs. The MFBs acquire finite slopes when s-wave pairing and Rashba spin-oribit coupling terms are added to the Hamiltonian. In this case, novel uni-directional MESs which propagate in the same direction on opposite edges may appear. Uni-directional MESs can also be found in pure s-wave superconductors with spin-orbit coupling. The MFBs and the uni-directional MESs induce nearly quantized zero bias conductance in tunneling experiments even in the presence of a gapless bulk and disorder.

Zero-bias peaks in spin-orbit coupled superconducting wires with and without Majorana end-states

One of the simplest proposed experimental probes of a Majorana bound-state is a quantized (2e^2/h) value of zero-bias tunneling conductance. When temperature is somewhat larger than the intrinsic width of the Majorana peak, conductance is no longer quantized, but a zero-bias peak can remain. Such a non-quantized zero-bias peak has been recently reported for semiconducting nanowires with proximity induced superconductivity. In this paper we analyze the relation of the zero-bias peak to the presence of Majorana end-states, by simulating the tunneling conductance for multi-band wires with realistic amounts of disorder. We show that this system generically exhibits a (non-quantized) zero-bias peak even when the wire is topologically trivial and does not possess Majorana end-states. We make comparisons to recent experiments, and discuss the necessary requirements for confirming the existence of a Majorana state.

Realizing DIII Class Topological Superconductors using $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave Superconductors

In this work, we show that a quasi-one-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a topological superconductor (TS). This time-reversal invariant DIII class TS supports two topologically protected zero energy Majorana fermions at each end of the system. In contrast to proposals using s-wave superconductors in which a strong magnetic field and the fine tuning of the chemical potential are needed to create Majorana fermions, in our proposal, the topologically non-trivial regime can be reached in the absence of a magnetic field and in a wide range of chemical potential. Experimental signatures and realizations of the proposed superconducting state are discussed.

Robustness of Majorana Fermion induced Fractional Josephson Effect

It is shown in previous works that the coupling between two Majorana end states in superconducting quantum wires leads to fractional Josephson effect. However, in realistic experimental conditions, multiple bands of the wires are occupied and the Majorana end states are accompanied by other fermionic end states. This raises the question concerning the robustness of fractional Josephson effect in these situations. In this work, we show that the absence of the avoided energy crossing which gives rise to the fractional Josephson effect is robust, even when the Majorana fermions are coupled with arbitrary strengths to other fermions. Moreover, we calculate the temperature dependence of the fractional Josephson current and show that it is suppressed by thermal excitations to the other fermion bound states.

Majorana Fermion Induced Resonant Andreev Reflection

We describe experimental signatures of Majorana fermion edge states, which form at the interface between a superconductor and the surface of a topological insulator. If a lead couples to the Majorana fermions through electron tunneling, the Majorana fermions induce \textit{resonant} Andreev reflections from the lead to the grounded superconductor. The linear tunneling conductance is $0 $ ($2 e^2/h$) if there is an even (odd) number of vortices in the superconductor. Similar resonance occurs for tunneling into the zero mode in the vortex core. We also study the current and noise of a two-lead device.

Quantum Dot in 2D Topological Insulator: The Two-channel Kondo Fixed Point

In this work, a quantum dot couples to two helical edge states of a 2D topological insulator through weak tunnelings is studied. We show that if the electron interactions on the edge states are repulsive, with Luttinger liquid parameter $ K < 1 $, the system flows to a stable two-channel fixed point at low temperatures. This is in contrast to the case of a quantum dot couples to two Luttinger liquid leads. In the latter case, a strong electron-electron repulsion is needed, with $ K<1/2 $, to reach the two-channel fixed point. This two-channel fixed point is described by a boundary Sine-Gordon Hamiltonian with a $K$ dependent boundary term. The impurity entropy at zero temperature is shown to be $ \ln\sqrt{2K} $. The impurity specific heat is $C \propto T^{\frac{2}{K}-2}$ when $ 2/3 < K < 1 $, and $ C \propto T$ when $ K<2/3$. We also show that the linear conductance across the two helical edges has non-trivial temperature dependence as a result of the renormalization group flow.

Probing Non-Abelian Statistics in nu=12/5 Quantum Hall State

The tunneling current and shot noise of the current between two Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) edges in the $ ν=12/5 $ FQH state in electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer are studied. It is shown that the tunneling current and shot noise can be used to probe the existence of $k=3 $ parafermion statistics in the $ ν=12/5 $ FQH state. More specifically, the dependence of the current on the Aharonov-Bohm flux in the Read-Rezayi state is asymmetric under the change of the sign of the applied voltage. This property is absent in the Abelian Laughlin states. Moreover the Fano factor can exceed 12.7 electron charges in the $ ν=12/5 $ FQH state . This number well exceeds the maximum possible Fano factor in all Laughlin states and the $ ν=5/2 $ Moore-Read state which was shown previously to be $ e $ and $ 3.2 e $ respectively.

Quantum Phase Transition between (Luttinger) Liquid and Gas of Cold Molecules

We consider cold polar molecules confined in a helical optical lattice similar to those used in holographic microfabrication. An external electric field polarizes molecules along the axis of the helix. The large-distance inter-molecular dipolar interaction is attractive but the short-scale interaction is repulsive due to geometric constraints and thus prevents collapse. The interaction strength depends on the electric field. We show that a zero-temperature second-order liquid-gas transition occurs at a critical field. It can be observed under experimentally accessible conditions.

Shot Noise in Anyonic Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We show how shot noise in an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer in the fractional quantum Hall regime probes the charge and statistics of quantum Hall quasiparticles. The dependence of the noise on the magnetic flux through the interferometer allows for a simple way to distinguish Abelian from non-Abelian quasiparticle statistics. In the Abelian case, the Fano factor (in units of the electron charge) is always lower than unity. In the non-Abelian case, the maximal Fano factor as a function of the magnetic flux exceeds one.

Electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer as a tool to probe fractional statistics

We study transport through an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer recently devised at the Weizmann Institute. We show that this device can be used to probe statistics of quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall regime. We calculate the tunneling current through the interferometer as the function of the Aharonov-Bohm flux, temperature and voltage bias, and demonstrate that its flux-dependent component is strongly sensitive to the statistics of tunneling quasiparticles. More specifically, the flux-dependent and flux-independent contributions to the current are related by a power law, the exponent being a function of the quasiparticle statistics.
