Search for $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus by the $^6$Li$(π^-,K^+)$ reaction at $p_{π^-}$ = 1.2 GeV/$c$

We have carried out an experiment to search for a neutron-rich hypernucleus, $^6_Λ$H, by the $^6$Li($π^-,K^+$) reaction at $p_{π^-}$ =1.2 GeV/$c$. The obtained missing mass spectrum with an estimated energy resolution of 3.2 MeV (FWHM) showed no peak structure corresponding to the $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus neither below nor above the $^4_Λ$H$+2n$ particle decay threshold. An upper limit of the production cross section for the bound $^6_Λ$H hypernucleus was estimated to be 1.2 nb/sr at 90% confidence level.

Letter of intent; Precise measurements of very forward particle production at RHIC

In this paper, we propose an experiment for the precise measurements of very forward particle production at RHIC. The proposal is to install a LHCf-like calorimeter in the ZDC installation slot at one of the RHIC interaction points. By installing a high-resolution electromagnetic calorimeter at this location we measure the spectra of photons, neutrons and pi0 at pseudo rapidity eta above 6. The new measurements at 500 GeV p-p collisions contribute to improve the hadronic interaction models used in the cosmic-ray air shower simulations. Using a similar kinematic coverage at RHIC to that of the measurements at LHC, we can test the Feynman scaling with a wide energy range and make the extrapolation of models into cosmic-ray energy more reliable. Combination of a high position resolution of the LHCf detector and a high energy resolution of the ZDC makes it possible to determine pT of forward neutrons with the ever best resolution. This enables us to study the forward neutron spin asymmetry discovered at RHIC in more detail. Another new experiment expected at RHIC is world-first light-ion collisions. Cosmic-ray interaction models have been so far tested with accelerator data, but colliders have provided only p-p and heavy-ion collisions. To simulate the interaction between cosmic-ray particles and atmosphere, collision of light ions like nitrogen is a ultimate goal for the cosmic-ray physics. We propose 200 GeV p-N collisions together with 200 GeV p-p collisions to study the nuclear effects in the forward particle production. The experiment can be performed by using the existing LHCf detector. Considering the geometry and response of one of the LHCf detectors, we propose some short dedicated operations. Ideal beam conditions are summarized in this paper. Our basic idea is to bring one of the LHCf detectors to RHIC and then operate from 2016 season at RHIC.

Backward-angle photoproduction of $ω$ and $η'$ mesons from protons at $E_γ=1.5-3.0$ GeV

We report the measurement of differential cross sections for $ω$ and $η'$ photoproduction from protons at backward angles ($-1.0<\cosΘ_{C.M}^{X}<-0.8$) using linearly polarized photons at $E_γ=$$1.5-3.0$ GeV. Differential cross sections for $ω$ mesons are larger than the predicted $u$-channel contribution in the energy range $2.0\leq\sqrt{s}\leq2.4$ GeV. The differential cross sections for $ω$ and $η'$ mesons become closer to the predicted $u$-channel contribution at $\sqrt{s}>2.4$ GeV. A bump structure in the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the differential cross sections for $η'$ mesons was observed at $\sqrt{s}\sim$2.35 GeV.

Search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction at 1.92 GeV/$c$

The $Θ^+$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/$c^2$(FWHM) at J-PARC. $π^-$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/$c$. No peak structure corresponding to the $Θ^+$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 $μ$b/sr in the mass region of 1.51$-$1.55 GeV/$c^2$.The upper limit of the $Θ^+$ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/$c^2$ and 3.1 MeV/$c^2$ for $J^P_Θ=1/2^+$ and $J^P_Θ=1/2^-$, respectively.

The HypHI project: Hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and FAIR

The HypHI collaboration aims to perform a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy with stable heavy ion beams and rare isotope beams at GSI and fAIR in order to study hypernuclei at extreme isospin, especially neutron rich hypernuclei to look insight hyperon-nucleon interactions in the neutron rich medium, and hypernuclear magnetic moments to investigate baryon properties in the nuclei. We are currently preparing for the first experiment with $^6$Li and $^{12}$C beams at 2 AGeV to demonstrate the feasibility of a precise hypernuclear spectroscopy by identifying $^{3}_Λ$H, $^{4}_Λ$H and $^{5}_Λ$He. The first physics experiment on these hypernuclei is planned for 2009. In the present document, an overview of the HypHI project and the details of this first experiment will be discussed.

Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetry in Very Forward and Very Backward Neutral Particle Production for Polarized Proton Collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV

In the 2001-2002 running period of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), transversely polarized protons were accelerated to 100 GeV for the first time, with collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV. We present results from this run for single transverse spin asymmetries for inclusive production of neutral pions, photons and neutrons of the energy region 20 - 100 GeV for forward and backward production for angles between 0.3 mrad and 2.2 mrad with respect to the polarized proton direction. An asymmetry of A_N = (-0.090 +- 0.006 +- 0.009) x (1.0^{+0.47}_{-0.24}) was observed for forward neutron production, where the errors are statistical and systematic, and the scale error is from the beam polarization uncertainty. The forward photon and pi^0, and backward neutron, photon, and pi^0 asymmetries were consistent with zero. The large neutron asymmetry indicates a strong interference between a spin-flip amplitude, such as one pion exchange which dominates lower energy neutron production, and remaining spin non-flip amplitudes such as Reggeon exchange.

Coincidence Measurement of the Nonmesonic Weak Decay of ^{12}_{Lambda}C

We have measured the angular correlation of the pair nucleons np and nn emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{12}_{Lambda}C produced via the (pi^+,K^+) reaction in coincidence measurement. The Lambda p -> np and Lambda n -> nn modes were clearly identified by measuring the back-to-back correlation of the emitted nucleon pairs which is the characteristic of two-body kinematics. From the measured nucleon pair numbers N_{nn} and N_{np}, the ratio Gamma_n/Gamma_p of the partial decay widths Gamma_n(Lambda n -> nn) and Gamma_p(Lambda p -> np) of ^{12}_{Lambda}C was extracted to be 0.51+-0.13(stat) +- 0.05(syst); this result is almost free from the ambiguity due to the nuclear final state interaction and 3-body decay process, which were inherent in the previous results. The obtained Gamma_n/Gamma_p ratio of ^{12}_{Lambda}C (p-shell) is close to that of ^5_{Lambda}He (s-shell). The results are consistent with those of recent theoretical calculations.

Exclusive Measurement of the Nonmesonic Weak Decay of ^{5}_ΛHe Hypernucleus

We performed a coincidence measurement of two nucleons emitted from the nonmesonic weak decay (NMWD) of ^{5}_ΛHe formed via the ^{6}Li(π^+,K^+) reaction. The energies of two nucleons and the pair number distributions in the opening angle between them were measured. In both np and nn pairs, we observed a clean back-to-back correlation coming from the two-body decay of Λp --> n p and Λn --> n n, respectively. The ratio of the nucleon pair numbers was N_{nn}/N_{np}=0.45 \pm 0.11(stat)\pm 0.03(syst) in the kinematic region of cos(theta_{NN}) < -0.8. Since each decay mode was exclusively detected, the measured ratio should be close to the ratio of Γ(Λp --> np)/Γ(Λn --> nn). The ratio is consistent with recent theoretical calculations based on the heavy meson/direct quark exchange picture.

Exclusive proton asymmetry measurement in non-mesonic weak decay of polarized 5_Lambda_He

The asymmetry parameter alpha_p^NM for a proton exclusively emitted in the Lambda p -> np process was, for the first time, measured in the non-mesonic weak decay of a polarized 5_La,bda_He hypernucleus by selecting the proton-neutron pairs emitted in the back-to-back kinematics. The highly polarized 5_Lambda_He was abundantly produced with the (pi+,K+) reaction at 1.05GeV/c in the scattering angular range of +-15$ degrees. The obtained value alpha_p^NM=0.31+-0.22, as well as that for inclusive protons, alpha_p^NM=0.11+-0.08+-0.04, largely contradicts recent theoretical values of around -0.6, although these calculations well reproduce the branching ratios of non-mesonic weak decay.

Nucleon-nucleon coincidence measurement in the non-mesonic weak decay of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei

We have measured both yields of neutron-proton and neutron-neutron pairs emitted from the non-mesonic weak decay process of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via the (pi^+,K^+) reaction for the first time. We observed clean back-to-back correlation of the np- and nn-pairs in the coincidence spectra for both hypernuclei. The ratio of those back-to-back pair yields, Nnn / Nnp, must be close to the ratio of neutron- and proton-induced decay widths of the decay, Gn(Lambda n -> nn)/Gp(Lambda p -> np). The obtained ratios for each hypernuclei support recent calculations based on short-range interactions.

Hypernuclear Spectroscopy using the (e,e'K+) Reaction

A pioneering experiment in Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopy, undertaken at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jlab), was recently reported. The experiment used the high- precision, continuous electron beam at Jlab, and a special arrangement of spectrometer magnets to measure the spectrum from {nat}C and 7Li targets using the (e,e' K+)reaction. The 12B hypernuclear spectrum was previously published. This experiment is now reported in more detail, with improved results for the 12B hypernuclear spectrum. In addition, unpublished results of the 7He hypernuclear spectrum are also shown. This later spectrum indicates the need for a more detailed few-body calculation of the hypernucleus and the reaction process. The success of this experiment demonstrates that the (e,e'K+) reaction can be effectively used as a high resolution tool to study hypernuclear spectra, ant its use should be vigorously pursued.

Neutron and proton energy spectra from the non-mesonic weak decays of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C

We have simultaneously measured the energy spectra of neutrons and protons emitted in the non-mesonic weak decays of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via the (pi^+,k^+) reaction with much higher statistics over those of previous experiments. The neutron-to-proton yield ratios for both hypernuclei at a high energy threshold (60 MeV) were approximately equal to two, which suggests that the ratio of the neutron- and proton-induced decay channels, Gn(Lambda n -> nn)/Gp(Lambda p -> np), is about 0.5. In the neutron energy spectra, we found that the yield of the low-energy component is unexpectedly large, even for 5_Lambda-He.

Study of the Sigma-nucleus potential by the (pi^-,K^+) reaction on medium-to-heavy nuclear targets

In order to study the Sigma-nucleus optical potential, we measured inclusive (pi^-,K^+) spectra on medium-to-heavy nuclear targets: CH_2, Si, Ni, In and Bi. The CH_2 target was used to calibrate the excitation energy scale by using the elementary process p + pi^- -> K^+ + Sigma^-, where the C spectrum was also extracted. The calibration was done with +-0.1 MeV precision. The angular distribution of the elementary cross section was measured, and agreed well with the previous bubble chamber data, but with better statistics, and the magnitudes of the cross sections of the measured inclusive (pi^-,K^+) spectra were also well calibrated. All of the inclusive spectra were found to be similar in shape at a region near to the Sigma^- binding energy threshold, showing a weak mass-number dependence on the magnitude of the cross section. The measured spectra were compared with a theoretical calculation performed within the framework of the Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation (DWIA). It has been demonstrated that a strongly repulsive \sig-nucleus potential with a non-zero size of the imaginary part is required to reproduce the shape of the measured spectra.

pi^0 decay branching ratios of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei

We precisely measured pi^0 branching ratios of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via (pi^+,k^+) reaction. Using these pi^0 branching ratios with the pi^- branching ratios and the lifetimes, we obtained the pi^0 decay widths and the non-mesonic weak decay widths at high statistics with the accuracy of ~5 % (stat) for both hypernuclei.

Proton asymmetry in non-mesonic weak decay of light hypernuclei

We have obtained the decay asymmetry parameters in non-mesonic weak decay of polarized Lambda-hypernuclei by measuring the proton asymmetry. The polarized Lambda-hypernuclei, 5_Lambda-He, 12_Lambda-C, and 11_Lambda-B, were produced in high statistics via the (pi^+,k^+) reaction at 1.05 GeV/c in the forward angles. Preliminary analysis shows that the decay asymmetry parameters are very small for these s-shell and p-shell hypernuclei.
