Enhanced high-field transport critical current densities observed for the ex-situ PIT processed Ag/(Ba,K)Fe2As2 thin tapes

We found that the transport Jc of the ex-situ PIT processed (Ba,K)Fe2As2 (Ba-122) wire with single Ag sheath can be significantly enhanced by repeating the combined process of rolling and heat treatment. The transport Jc (4.2 K and 10 T) of 4.4 x 103 A/cm2 (Ic =15.7 A) was obtained for a thin tape of 0.3 mm in thickness, which is the highest value reported so far for the PIT processed 122 wires and tapes with a Ag sheath and processed by a conventional route. The measurement by a hybrid magnet showed that Jc-H curve maintains very small field dependence up to the strong magnetic field of 28 T as expected from the previously reported high Hc2 value. The core of the thin tape shows dense grain structure with less cracks and voids and indicates the development of c-axis alignment, although it is still incomplete. The researches to elucidate the origin of Jc enhancement and to have further improvement of transport Jc are now ongoing. The process is simple using a Ag single sheath and, therefore, more realistic technique for long length wire production.

Fabrication of high performance MgB2 wires by an internal Mg diffusion process

We succeeded in the fabrication of high-Jc MgB2/Fe wires applying the internal Mg diffusion (IMD) process with pure Mg core and SiC addition. A pure Mg rod with 2 mm diameter was placed at the center of a Fe tube, and the space between Mg and Fe tube was filled with B powder or the powder mixture of B-(5mol%)SiC. The composite was cold worked into 1.2mm diameter wire and finally heat treated at temperatures above the melting point of Mg(~650oC). During the heat treatment liquid Mg infiltrated into B layer and reacted with B to form MgB2. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the major phase in the reacted layer is MgB2. SEM analysis shows that the density of MgB2 layer is higher than that of usual powder-in-tube(PIT) processed wires. The wires with 5mol% SiC addition heat treated at 670oC showed Jc values higher than 105A/cm2 in 8T and 41,000A/cm2 in 10T at 4.2K. These values are much higher than those of usual PIT processed wires even compared to the ones with SiC addition. Higher density of MgB2 layer obtained by the diffusion reaction is the major cause of this excellent Jc values.

Temperature dependences of the upper critical field and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter of Li2Pd3B from magnetization measurements

We present temperature dependences of the upper critical magnetic field and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter for a ternary boride superconductor Li_2Pd_3B obtained from magnetization measurements. A specially developed scaling approach was used for the data analysis. The resulting H_c2(T) curve turns out to be surprisingly close to predictions of the BCS theory. The magnetic field penetration depth, evaluated in this work, is in excellent agreement with recent muon-spin-rotation experiments. We consider this agreement as an important proof of the validity of our approach.

Discovery of Li2(Pd,Pt)3B superconductors

Critical temperature Tc of the Li2(Pd1-xPtx)3B was reported to be 7-8K for x=0 and 2.2-2.8K for x=1. In this article we present our preliminary results on behavior of magnetization-temperature curves with starting composition of Pd-B precursor, y-Li concentration in LiyPd3B and post-annealing of the Pd-end compound. Results suggest that to maximize Tc ratio Pd:B should be close to 3:1, while y-Li has to be optimum. The lowest Tc for LiyPd3B was 4.4-4.6K, while post-annealings at 560 deg. C allowed enhancement of Tc up to 8.2-8.4K. Compositions Li2Z3B with Z=Ni, Ru, Rh, Re, Ag are not superconducting down to 1.8K. Exception is composition with Re showing superconductivity due to Re3B compound. All samples were prepared by arc melting.

Low-Energy Charge-Density Excitations in MgB$_{2}$: Striking Interplay between Single-Particle and Collective Behavior for Large Momenta

A sharp feature in the charge-density excitation spectra of single-crystal MgB$_{2}$, displaying a remarkable cosine-like, periodic energy dispersion with momentum transfer ($q$) along the $c^{*}$-axis, has been observed for the first time by high-resolution non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS). Time-dependent density-functional theory calculations show that the physics underlying the NIXS data is strong coupling between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, mediated by large crystal local-field effects. As a result, the small-$q$ collective mode residing in the single-particle excitation gap of the B $π$ bands reappears periodically in higher Brillouin zones. The NIXS data thus embody a novel signature of the layered electronic structure of MgB$_{2}$.

S-wave/spin-triplet order in superconductors without inversion symmetry: Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B

We investigate the order parameter of noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B via the behavior of the penetration depth $λ(T)$. The low-temperature penetration depth shows BCS-like behavior in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, while in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B it follows a linear temperature dependence. We propose that broken inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which admix spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, are responsible for this behavior. The triplet contribution is weak in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, leading to a wholly open but anisotropic gap. The significantly larger spin-orbit coupling in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B allows the spin-triplet component to be larger in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B, producing line nodes in the energy gap as evidenced by the linear temperature dependence of $λ(T)$. The experimental data are in quantitative agreement with theory.

Angle-resolved photoemission study of cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O : Observation of the Fermi surface

Cobalt oxide superconductor NaxCoO2.yH2O is studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We report the Fermi surface (FS) topology and electronic structure near the Fermi level (EF) of NaxCoO2.yH2O. Our result indicates the presence of the hexagonal FS centered at G point, while the small pocket FSs along G-K direction are absent similar to NaxCoO2. The top of the eg' band, which is expected in band calculations to form the small pocket FSs, extends to within 20 - 50 meV below EF, more closer to EF than in NaxCoO2. We discuss its possible role in superconductivity, comparing with other experimental and theoretical results.

Muon-spin-rotation measurements of the penetration depth in Li_2Pd_3B

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth $λ$ in the ternary boride superconductor Li$_2$Pd$_3$B ($T_c\simeq7.3$ K) have been carried out by means of muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR). The absolute values of $λ$, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter $κ$, and the first $H_{c1}$ and the second $H_{c2}$ critical fields at T=0 obtained from $μ$SR were found to be $λ(0)=252(2)$ nm, $κ(0)=27(1)$, $μ_0H_{c1}(0)=9.5(1)$ mT, and $μ_0H_{c2}(0)=3.66(8)$ T, respectively. The zero-temperature value of the superconducting gap $Δ_0=$1.31(3) meV was found, corresponding to the ratio $2Δ_0/k_BT_c=4.0(1)$. At low temperatures $λ(T)$ saturates and becomes constant below $T\simeq 0.2T_c$, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Li$_2$Pd$_3$B is a s-wave BCS superconductor with the only one isotropic energy gap.

Landau and Ott scaling for the kinetic energy density and the low $T_c$ conventional superconductors, $Li_{2}Pd_{3}B$ and Nb

The scaling approach recently proposed by Landau and Ott for isothermal magnetization curves is extended to the average kinetic energy density of the condensate. Two low $T_c$ superconductors, Nb and $Li_{2}Pd_{3}B$ are studied and their isothermal reversible magnetization shown to display Landau and Ott scaling. Good agreement is obtained for the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$, determined from the Abrikosov approximation for the reversible region (standard linear extrapolation of the magnetization curve), and from the maximum of the kinetic energy curves. For the full range of data, which includes the irreversible region, the isothermal $d.M.B/H^2$ curves for $Li_2Pd_3B$ show an impressive collapse into a single curve over the entire range of field measurements. The Nb isothermal $d.M.B/H^2$ curves exhibit the interesting feature of a constant and temperature independent minimum value.

Evidence for non-conventional pairing in Na$\_x$CoO$\_2$$\cdot$yH$\_2$O

We report on first investigation of the lattice dynamics in the novel superconducting material Na$\_{0.35}$CoO$\_2$$\cdot$1.3H$\_2$O and the non-hydrated parent compound Na$\_{0.7}$CoO$\_2$ by inelastic x-ray scattering. The measured phonon dispersion along the $Γ-M$ direction show a marked softening with hole doping of two optical phonon branches close to the Brillouin zone boundary. The phonon spectra, dispersion, and softening are well reproduced by first-principle calculations. The calculations indicates that the soft branches are mainly composed of Co-vibration modes. The estimation of the critical temperature based on electron-phonon coupling mechanism undisputedly points to a non-conventional superconducting state in this material.

A Penetration Depth Study on Li2Pd3B and Li2Pt3B

In this paper we present a penetration depth study on the newly discovered superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B. Surprisingly, the low-temperature penetration depth $f(T)$ demonstrates distinct behavior in these two isostructural compounds. In Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, $f(T)$ follows an exponential decay and can be nicely fitted by a two-gap BCS superconducting model with a small gap $δ_1=3.2$K and a large gap $δ_2=11.5$K. However, linear temperature dependence of $f(T)$ is observed in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B below 0.3$T_c$, giving evidence of line nodes in the energy gap.

Magnetization measurements on Li2Pd3B superconductor

Magnetization in DC magnetic fields and at different temperatures have been measured on the Li2Pd3B compound. This material was recently found to show superconductivity at 7-8K. Critical fields Hc1(0) and Hc2(0) have been determined to be 135Oe and 4T, respectively. Critical current density, scaling of the pinning force within the Kramer model and the irreversibility field data are presented. Several superconductivity parameters were deduced: x(csi)=9.1 nm, l(lamda)=194nm and k=21. The material resembles other boride superconductors from the investigated points of view.

Superconductivity in metal rich Li-Pd-B ternary Boride

8K superconductivity was observed in the metal rich Li-Pd-B ternary system. Structural, microstructural, electrical and magnetic investigations for various compositions proved that Li2Pd3B compound, which has a cubic structure composed of distorted Pd6B octahedrons, is responsible for the superconductivity. This is the first observation of superconductivity in metal rich ternary borides containing alkaline metal and Pd as a late transition metal. The compound prepared by arc melting has high density, is stable in the air and has an upper critical field, Hc2(0), of 6T.

Improvement of critical current density in Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes by ZrSi2, ZrB2 and WSi2 doping

Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes were prepared through the in situ powder-in-tube technique by 5 at.% ZrSi2, ZrB2 and WSi2 doping, respectively. The doping effect of these compounds on the microstructure and superconducting properties of MgB2 tapes has been investigated by using x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transport measurements and DC susceptibility measurements. Compared to the undoped samples, Jc for all the doped samples were much improved; the best result in terms of Jc was achieved for ZrSi2 doping, by up to a factor of 3.4 at 4.2 K in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Moreover, these dopants did not significantly decrease the transition temperature. The Jc-B curves of WSi2-doped tapes show better performance in higher magnetic fields in comparison to undoped tapes, suggesting that pinning centers effective in a high-field region were possibly introduced.

A New Approach for the Fabrication of MgB2 Superconducting Tape with Large In-field Transport Critical Current Density

The paper reports the first successful fabrication of MgB2 superconducting tape using a flexible metallic substrate as well as its strong pinning force, which was verified by direct measurement of transport critical current density. The tape was prepared by depositing MgB2 film on a Hastelloy tape buffered with an YSZ layer. The Jc of the tape exceeds 105A/cm2 at 4.2K and 10T, which is considered as a common benchmark for magnet application. The Jc dependence on magnetic field remains surprisingly very small up to 10T, suggesting that the tape has much better magnetic field characteristic than conventional Nb-Ti wires in liquid helium.

Strain Effect in MgB2/Stainless Steel Superconducting Tape

The influence of mechanical strain on the critical current (Ic) is investigated for MgB2/stainless steel (SUS316) superconducting tapes. The tapes are fabricated by using 'powder in tube' method and deformation process without any heat treatment. The tensile axial strain along tape length is successfully induced to the sample by using a U-shape holder made of stainless steel (SUS304). Two samples are examined at 4.2 K in 5 T (B is applied perpendicular to the tape surface). While the initial Ic at zero external strain state (Ic0) varies (30.4 and 33.3 A), normalized Ic (Ic/Ic0) vs. external strain relations fall on the same curve. Linear increase of Ic is observed from zero external strain state to 0.5% strain (107% of Ic0). Rapid and large degradation occurs at the strain exceeding 0.4-0.5%. High durability against stress can be expected for MgB2/stainless steel superconducting tapes.

High transport critical current density obtained for Powder-In-Tube-processed MgB2 tapes and wires using stainless steel and Cu-Ni tubes

MgB2 tapes and wires were fabricated by the Powder-In-Tube method. Stainless steel and Cu-Ni tubes were used as sheath materials, and no heat treatment was applied. The tapes made of stainless steel showed transport critical current density Jc of about 10,000A/cm2 at 4.2K and 5T. A high Jc of about 300,000A/cm2 was obtained by extrapolating the Jc-B curves to zero field. Multifilamentary(7-core) MgB2 wire was successfully fabricated using Cu-Ni tubes. For both tapes and wires the grain connectivity of MgB2 was as good as a high-pressure sintered bulk sample. However, the Jc of the Cu-Ni sheathed wire was lower than the stainless steel sheathed tape due to the lower packing density of MgB2.
