Nuclear modification of the J/Psi transverse momentum distributions in high energy pA and AA collisions

We evaluate the transverse momentum spectrum of J/Psi (up to semi-hard momenta) in pA and AA collisions taking into account only the initial state effects, but resumming them to all orders in α_s^2 A^{1/3}. In our previous papers we noticed that cold nuclear matter effects alone could not explain the experimental data on rapidity and centrality dependencies of the J/Psi yield in AA collisions indicating the existence of an additional suppression mechanism. Our present calculations indicate that the discrepancy persists and even increases at semi-hard transverse momenta, implying a significant final state effect on J/Psi production in this kinematical domain. The QCD dipole model we employ is only marginally applicable for J/Psi production at mid-rapidity at RHIC energies but its use is justified in the forward rapidity region. At LHC energies we can quantitatively evaluate the magnitude of cold nuclear matter effects in the entire kinematical region of interest. We present our calculations of J/Psi transverse momentum spectra in pA and AA collisions at LHC and RHIC energies.

Gluon saturation effects on the color singlet J/Psi production in high energy dA and AA collisions

We derive the formulae for the cross section of J/Psi production in high energy pA and AA collisions taking into account the gluon saturation/color glass condensate effects. We then perform the numerical calculations of the corresponding nuclear modification factors and find a good agreement between our calculations and the experimental data on J/Psi production in dA collisions. We also observe that cold nuclear modification effects alone cannot describe the data on J/Psi production in AA collisions. Additional final state suppression (at RHIC) and enhancement (at LHC) mechanisms are required to explain the experimental observations.

Universal properties of bulk viscosity near the QCD phase transition

We extract the bulk viscosity of hot quark-gluon matter in the presence of light quarks from the recent lattice data on the QCD equation of state. For that purpose we extend the sum rule analysis by including the contribution of light quarks. We also discuss the universal properties of bulk viscosity in the vicinity of a second order phase transition, as it might occur in the chiral limit of QCD at fixed strange quark mass and most likely does occur in two-flavor QCD. We point out that a chiral transition in the O(4) universality class at zero baryon density as well as the transition at the chiral critical point which belongs to the Z(2) universality class both lead to the critical behavior of bulk viscosity. In particular, the latter universality class implies the divergence of the bulk viscosity, which may be used as a signature of the critical point. We discuss the physical picture behind the dramatic increase of bulk viscosity seen in our analysis, and devise possible experimental tests of related phenomena.

Bulk viscosity of QCD matter near the critical temperature

Kubo's formula relates bulk viscosity to the retarded Green's function of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. Using low energy theorems of QCD for the latter we derive the formula which relates the bulk viscosity to the energy density and pressure of hot matter. We then employ the available lattice QCD data to extract the bulk viscosity as a function of temperature. We find that close to the deconfinement temperature bulk viscosity becomes large, with viscosity-to-entropy ratio zeta/s about 1.

QCD in curved space-time: a conformal bag model

We construct an effective low energy Lagrangian of gluodynamics which (i) satisfies all constraints imposed by the Renormalization Group; (ii) is scale and conformally invariant in the limit of vanishing vacuum energy density; (iii) matches onto the perturbative theory at short distances. This effective theory has a dual description as classical gluodynamics on a curved conformal background. Color fields are dynamically confined, and the strong coupling freezes at distances larger than the glueball size. We also make specific predictions (in particular, on the Nc dependence of glueball properties) which can be tested in lattice simulations of gluodynamics.

Open charm production in heavy ion collisions and the Color Glass Condensate

We consider the production of open charm in heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Color Glass Condensate. In the central rapidity region at RHIC, for the charm quark yield we expect N(coll) (number of collisions) scaling in the absence of final-state effects. At higher energies, or forward rapidities at RHIC, the saturation scale exceeds the charm quark mass; we find that this results in the approximate N(part) (number of participants) scaling of charm production in AA collisions and N(part)^A scaling in p(d)A collisions, similarly to the production of high pT gluons discussed earlier. We also show that the saturation phenomenon makes spectra harder as compared to the naive parton model approach. We then discuss the energy loss of charm quarks in hot and cold media and argue that the hardness of the spectrum implies very slow dependence of the quenching factor on pT.

Classical gluodynamics in curved space--time and the soft Pomeron

QCD at the classical level possesses scale invariance which is broken by quantum effects. This ``dimensional transmutation'' phenomenon can be mathematically described by formulating classical gluodynamics in a curved, conformally flat, space-time with non-vanishing cosmological constant. We study QCD high-energy scattering in this theory. We find that the properties of the scattering amplitude at small momentum transfer are determined by the energy density of vacuum fluctuations. The approach gives rise to the power growth of the total hadron-hadron cross section with energy, i.e. the Pomeron. The intercept of the Pomeron and the multiplicity of produced particles are evaluated. We also speculate about a possible link between conformal anomaly and TeV scale quantum gravity.

Higher Twist Corrections and Maxima for DIS on a Proton in the High Density QCD Region

We show that the ratio of different structure functions have a maximum which depends on energy. We argue, using Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff model, that these maxima are the certain functions of the saturation scale. The analysis of leading and higher twist contributions for different observables is given with the aim of determining the kinematic region where high parton density effects could be seen experimentally.

Nonlinear evolution and saturation for heavy nuclei in DIS

The nonlinear evolution equation for the scattering amplitude of colour dipole off the heavy nucleus is solved in the double logarithmic approximation. It is found that if the initial parton density in a nucleus is smaller then some critical value, then the scattering amplitude is a function of one scaling variable inside the saturation region, whereas if it is greater then the critical value, then the scaling behaviour breaks down. Dependence of the saturation scale on the number of nucleons is discussed as well.

High density QCD at THERA

These notes are a summary of our predictions for the new THERA project, related to deep inelastic scattering in the region of ultra low $x$ ($x \to 10^{-7}$). We collect here predictions that satisfy two criteria (i) they do not depend on specific features of the model that we have to use to estimate a possible effect; and (ii) they do not contradict the HERA data.

New Scaling at High Energy DIS

We develop a new approach for solving the non-linear evolution equation in the low $x_B$ region and show that the remarkable "geometric" scaling of its solution holds not only in the saturation region, but in much wider kinematical region. This is in a full agreement with experimental data (Golec-Biernat, Kwiecinski and Stasto).

Has HERA reached a new QCD regime?

These notes are a summary of our efforts to answer the question in the title. Our answer is in the affirmative as: (i) HERA data indicate a large value of the gluon structure function; (ii) no contradictions with the asymptotic predictions of high density QCD have been observed; and (iii) the numerical estimates of our model give a natural description of the size of deviation from the routine DGLAP explanation. We discuss the alternative approaches and possible new experiments.

Energy Dependence of σ^{DD}/σ_{tot} in DIS and Shadowing Corrections

We gereralize the Kochegov-McLerran formula for the ratio $σ^{DD}/σ_{tot}$ in perturbative QCD, using Mueller-Glauber approach for shadowing corrections and AGK cutting rules. We investigate several phenomenological approaches with the goal of obtaining results consisent with experimental data. We fail to reproduce the observed weak energy dependence of the ratio, and conclude that the soft nonperturbative contribution present at short distances must also be included.

The Pomeron intercept in $λϕ^3$ theory in 4 Minkowski + 1 compact dimensions

We calculate the total cross section for two scalar particles scattering at high energies in $λϕ^3$ theory in five dimensions, four of which are usual Minkowski ones and the fifth is compact. It is shown that the cross section is dominated by exchange of Pomeron whose intercept is larger than in usual four-dimensional case.

Higher twists and maxima for DIS on nuclei in high density QCD region

We show that the ratio of different structure functions have a maximum which depends on $x_B$ and $A$. We argue that these maxima are proportional to the saturation scale. The analysis of leading and higher twist contributions for different observables is given with the aim of determining the kinematic region where high parton density effects could be seen experimentally.

Shadowing Corrections and Diffractive Production in DIS on Nuclei

We calculate, in the Glauber-Mueller approach, the ratio of the diffractive dissociation cross section to the total cross section on nuclei. We observe that shadowing corrections (SC) are significant, in the calculated $\ddt$ ratio but they do not lead to a smooth energy dependence of the ratio for a proton target as was observed at HERA.
