Flexible heat-flow sensing sheets based on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect using one-dimensional spin-current conducting films

We demonstrated a flexible thermoelectric (TE) sheet based on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) that is especially suitable for heat-flow sensing applications. This TE sheet contained a Ni0.2Zn0.3Fe2.5O4 film which was formed on a flexible plastic sheet using a spray-coating method known as ferrite plating. The experimental results suggest that the ferrite-plated film, which has a columnar crystal structure aligned perpendicular to the film plane, functions as a unique one-dimensional spin-current conductor suitable for bendable LSSE-based sensors.

Time-resolved observation of coherent excitonic nonlinear response with a table-top narrowband THz pulse wave

By combining a tilted-pulse-intensity-front scheme using a LiNbO3 crystal and a chirped-pulse-beating method, we generated a narrowband intense terahertz (THz) pulse, which had a maximum electric field of more than 10 kV/cm at around 2 THz, a bandwidth of about 50 GHz,and frequency tunability from 0.5 to 2 THz. By performing THz-pump and near-infrared-probe experiments on GaAs quantum wells, we observed that the resonant excitation of the intraexcitonic 1s-2p transition induces a clear and large Autler-Townes splitting. Our time-resolved measurements show that the splitting energy observed in the rising edge region of electric field is larger than in the constant region. This result implies that the splitting energy depends on the time-averaged THz field over the excitonic dephasing time rather than that at the instant of the exciton creation by a probe pulse.

All-oxide spin Seebeck effects

We report the observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSE) in an all-oxide bilayer system comprising an IrO$_2$ film and an Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ film. Spin currents generated by a temperature gradient across the IrO$_2$/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ interface were detected as electric voltage via the inverse spin Hall effect in the conductive IrO$_2$ layer. This electric voltage is proportional to the magnitude of the temperature gradient and its magnetic field dependence is well consistent with the characteristic of the LSSE. This demonstration may lead to the realization of low-cost, stable, and transparent spin-current-driven thermoelectric devices.

Observation of huge thermal spin currents in magnetic multilayers

Thermal spin pumping constitutes a novel mechanism for generation of spin currents; however their weak intensity constitutes a major roadblock for its usefulness. We report a phenomenon that produces a huge spin current in the central region of a multilayer system, resulting in a giant spin Seebeck effect in a structure formed by repetition of ferromagnet/metal bilayers. The result is a consequence of the interconversion of magnon and electron spin currents at the multiple interfaces. This work opens the possibility to design thin film heterostructures that may boost the application of thermal spin currents in spintronics.

Hall detection of a ppm spin polarization

Hall effects have been employed as sensitive detectors of magnetic fields and magnetizations. In spintronics, exotic phenomena often emerge from a non-equilibrium spin polarization or magnetization, that is very difficult to measure directly. The challenge is due to the tiny total moment, which is out of reach of superconducting quantum interference devices and vibrating sample magnetometers or spectroscopic methods such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Kerr effect is sufficiently sensitive only in direct gap semiconductors, in which the Kerr angle can be resonantly enhanced. Here we demonstrate that even one excess spin in a million can be detected by a Hall effect at room temperature. The novel Hall effect is not governed by the spin Hall conductivity but by its energy derivative thereby related to the spin Nernst effect.

Spin-current injection and detection in strongly correlated organic conductor

Spin-current injection into an organic semiconductor $\rm{κ\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}$ film induced by the spin pumping from an yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film. When magnetization dynamics in the YIG film is excited by ferromagnetic or spin-wave resonance, a voltage signal was found to appear in the $\rm{κ\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}$ film. Magnetic-field-angle dependence measurements indicate that the voltage signal is governed by the inverse spin Hall effect in $\rm{κ\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}$. We found that the voltage signal in the $\rm{κ\text{-}(BEDT\text{-}TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br}$/YIG system is critically suppressed around 80 K, around which magnetic and/or glass transitions occur, implying that the efficiency of the spin-current injection is suppressed by fluctuations which critically enhanced near the transitions.

Spin current generation from sputtered Y3Fe5O12 films

Spin current injection from sputtered yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films into an adjacent platinum layer has been investigated by means of the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effects. Films with a thickness of 83 and 96 nanometers were fabricated by on-axis magnetron rf sputtering at room temperature and subsequent post-annealing. From the frequency dependence of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth, the damping constant has been estimated to be $(7.0\pm1.0)\times 10^{-4}$. Magnitudes of the spin current generated by the spin pumping and the spin Seebeck effect are of the same order as values for YIG films prepared by liquid phase epitaxy. The efficient spin current injection can be ascribed to a good YIG|Pt interface, which is confirmed by the large spin-mixing conductance $(2.0\pm0.2)\times 10^{18}$ m$^{-2}$.

Influence of interface condition on spin-Seebeck effects

The longitudinal spin-Seebeck effect (LSSE) has been investigated for Pt/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer systems. The magnitude of the voltage induced by the LSSE is found to be sensitive to the Pt/YIG interface condition. We observed large LSSE voltage in a Pt/YIG system with a better crystalline interface, while the voltage decays steeply when an amorphous layer is introduced at the interface artificially.

Interface-dependent magnetotransport properties for thin Pt films on ferrimagnetic Y3Fe5O12

We have studied magnetoresistance and Hall effects for 1.8-nm-thick Pt films grown on a ferrimagnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12 in a wide temperature (0.46-300 K) and magnetic-field (-15-15 T) region. In the low-temperature regime where quantum corrections to conductivity are observed, weak antilocalization behavior observed in Pt films is critically suppressed when the film is attached to Y3Fe5O12. Hall resistance in the Pt film is also affected by Y3Fe5O12, and it exhibits logarithmic temperature dependence in a broad temperature range. The magnetotransport properties in the high-field range are significantly influenced by the interface between Pt and Y3Fe5O12.

Observation of Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect with Various Transition Metal Films

We evaluated the thermoelectric properties of longitudinal spin Seebeck devices by using ten different transition metals (TMs). Both the intensity and sign of spin Seebeck coefficients were noticeably dependent on the degree of the inverse spin Hall effect and the resistivity of each TM film. Spin dependent behaviors were also observed under ferromagnetic resonance. These results indicate that the output of the spin Seebeck devices originates in the spin current.

Realization of holonomic single-qubit operations

Universal single-qubit operations based on purely geometric phase factors in adiabatic processes are demonstrated by utilizing a four-level system in a trapped single $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion connected by three oscillating fields. Robustness against parameter variations is studied. The scheme demonstrated here can be employed as a building block for large-scale holonomic quantum computations, which may be useful for large qubit systems with statistical variations in system parameters.

Spin mixing conductance at a well-controlled platinum/yttrium iron garnet interface

A platinum (Pt)/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer system with a well-controlled interface has been developed; spin mixing conductance at the Pt/YIG interface has been studied. Crystal perfection at the interface is experimentally demonstrated to contribute to large spin mixing conductance. The spin mixing conductance is obtained to be $1.3\times10^{18} \rm{m^{-2}}$ at the well-controlled Pt/YIG interface, which is close to a theoretical prediction.

Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect Free from the Proximity Nernst Effect

This letter provides evidence for intrinsic longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSEs) that are free from the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) caused by an extrinsic proximity effect. We report the observation of LSSEs in Au/Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) and Pt/Cu/YIG systems, showing that LSSE appears even when the mechanism of the proximity ANE is clearly removed. In the conventional Pt/YIG structure, furthermore, we separate the LSSE from the ANE by comparing the voltages in different magnetization and temperature-gradient configurations; the ANE contamination was found to be negligibly small even in the Pt/YIG structure.

Observation of the spin Seebeck effect in epitaxial Fe3O4 thin films

We report the first experimental observation of the spin Seebeck effect in magnetite thin films. The signal observed at temperatures above the Verwey transition is a contribution from both the anomalous Nernst (ANE) and spin Seebeck effects (SSE). The contribution from the ANE of the Fe3O4 layer to the SSE is found to be negligible due to the resistivity difference between Fe3O4 and Pt layers. Below the Verwey transition the SSE is free from the ANE of the ferromagnetic layer and it is also found to dominate over the ANE due to magnetic proximity effect on the Pt layer.

Heat-induced damping modification in YIG/Pt hetero-structures

We experimentally demonstrate the manipulation of magnetization relaxation utilizing a temperature difference across the thickness of an yttrium iron garnet/platinum (YIG/Pt) hetero-structure: the damping is either increased or decreased depending on the sign of the temperature gradient. This effect might be explained by a thermally-induced spin torque on the magnetization precession. The heat-induced variation of the damping is detected by microwave techniques as well as by a DC voltage caused by spin pumping into the adjacent Pt layer and the subsequent conversion into a charge current by the inverse spin Hall effect.

Spin Hall Magnetoresistance Induced by a Non-Equilibrium Proximity Effect

We report anisotropic magnetoresistance in Pt|Y3Fe5O12 bilayers. In spite of Y3Fe5O12 being a very good electrical insulator, the resistance of the Pt layer reflects its magnetization direction. The effect persists even when a Cu layer is inserted between Pt and Y3Fe5O12, excluding the contribution of induced equilibrium magnetization at the interface. Instead, we show that the effect originates from concerted actions of the direct and inverse spin Hall effects and therefore call it "spin Hall magnetoresistance."

Thermal spin pumping and magnon-phonon-mediated spin-Seebeck effect

The spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in ferromagnetic metals and insulators has been investigated systematically by means of the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE) in paramagnetic metals. The SSE generates a spin voltage as a result of a temperature gradient in a ferromagnet, which injects a spin current into an attached paramagnetic metal. In the paramagnet, this spin current is converted into an electric field due to the ISHE, enabling the electric detection of the SSE. The observation of the SSE is performed in longitudinal and transverse configurations consisting of a ferromagnet/paramagnet hybrid structure, where thermally generated spin currents flowing parallel and perpendicular to the temperature gradient are detected, respectively. Our results explain the SSE in terms of a two-step process: (1) the temperature gradient creates a non-equilibrium state in the ferromagnet governed by both magnon and phonon propagations and (2) the non-equilibrium between magnons in the ferromagnet and electrons in the paramagnet at the contact interface leads to "thermal spin pumping" and the ISHE signal. The non-equilibrium state of metallic magnets (e.g. Ni81Fe19) under a temperature gradient is governed mainly by the phonons in the sample and the substrate, while in insulating magnets (e.g. Y3Fe5O12) both magnon and phonon propagations appear to be important. The phonon-mediated non-equilibrium that drives the thermal spin pumping is confirmed also by temperature-dependent measurements, giving rise to a giant enhancement of the SSE signals at low temperatures.

Magnetic field dependence of Pauli spin blockade: a window into the sources of spin relaxation in silicon quantum dots

We investigate spin relaxation in a silicon double quantum dot via leakage current through Pauli blockade as a function of interdot detuning and magnetic field. A dip in leakage current as a function of magnetic field on a \sim 40 mT field scale is attributed to spin-orbit mediated spin relaxation. On a larger (\sim 400 mT) field scale, a peak in leakage current is seen in some, but not all, Pauli-blocked transitions, and is attributed to spin-flip cotunneling. Both dip and peak structure show good agreement between theory and experiment.
