Trion transfer in mixed-dimensional heterostructures

Charged excitons, or trions, offering unique spin and charge degrees of freedom, have primarily been investigated in doped systems where charges are long considered indispensable. Here, we present an alternative route to ultra-efficient trion emission from an intrinsic, defect-free semiconductor via a transfer mechanism. By exciting trions in two-dimensional tungsten-diselenide donors and transferring them into one-dimensional carbon-nanotube acceptors in mixed-dimensional heterostructures, we circumvent the usual carrier requirement, overcoming intrinsic Auger-quenching limitations. Benefitting from a reservoir effect induced by dimensional heterogeneity, this process achieves trion emission efficiencies increased by over 100-fold compared to conventional doping-based approaches, and remains robust across diverse doping conditions. Our findings extend the exciton transfer paradigm to the three-body quasiparticles, offering a new platform for advancing excitonic physics and trion-based optoelectronic/spintronic applications.

Effect of the growth orientation on the physical properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films

We study the effect of the growth orientation on the structural, electronic, and hence transport properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films grown on the orthorhombic NGO(100) and cubic MgO(100) substrates. The x-ray diffraction patterns show the growth of the thin film along $a$-axis resulting in the asymmetric ($b\neq c$) in-plane compressive strain in case of NGO(100), whereas along $c$-axis with tensile strain in case of MgO(100) substrate. The temperature dependent resistivity measurements indicate the lower electronic conductivity for the film grown on the NGO(100) substrate, which is found to be correlated with the higher degree of the oxygen deficiencies and hence larger concentration of the insulating Co$^{2+}$ in this sample. Further, the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements show that Sr and Nb are present in the 2+ and 4+ valence state, whereas Co exist in the 2+, 3+ as well as 4+ states, fraction of which was found to vary with the growth orientation. Moreover, the analysis of leakage current using the sum exponent model indicate the presence of two different relaxation mechanisms in these samples.

Neutron Tagging following Atmospheric Neutrino Events in a Water Cherenkov Detector

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. The fitted neutron capture lifetime was measured as 218 \pm 9 μs.

Enhanced exciton-exciton collisions in an ultra-flat monolayer MoSe2 prepared through deterministic flattening

Squeezing bubbles and impurities out of interlayer spaces by applying force through a few-layer graphene capping layer leads to van der Waals heterostructures with ultra-flat structure free from random electrostatic potential arising from charged impurities. Without the graphene capping layer, a squeezing process with an AFM tip induces applied-force-dependent charges of n ~ 2 x 10^12 cm^-2 uN^-1, resulting in strong intensity of trions in photoluminescence spectra of MoSe2 at low temperature. We found that a hBN/MoSe2/hBN prepared with the "modified nano-squeezing method" shows a strong excitonic emission with negligible trion peak, and the residual linewidth of the exciton peak is only 2.2 meV, which is comparable to the homogeneous limit. Furthermore, in this high-quality sample, we found that formation of biexciton occurs even at extremely low excitation power (Phi ~ 2.3 x 10^19 cm^-2 s^-1) due to the enhanced collisions between excitons.

Structural, transport, optical and electronic properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ thin films

We study the effect of substrate induced strain on the structural, transport, optical and electronic properties of Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ double perovskite thin films. The reciprocal space mapping, $ϕ$-scan and high-resolution $θ$-2$θ$ scans of x-ray diffraction patterns suggest the epitaxial nature and high-quality of the films deposited on various single crystal ceramic substrates. A systematic enhancement in the dc electronic conductivity is observed with increase in the compressive strain, while a sharp reduction in case of tensile strain, which are further supported by change in the activation energy and density of states near the Fermi level. The optical band gap extracted from two distinct absorption bands, observed in the visible-near infrared spectroscopy show a non-monotonic behavior in case of compressive strain while significant enhancement with tensile strain. Unlike the bulk Sr$_2$CoNbO$_6$ (Co$^{3+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$), we observe different valence states of Co namely 2+, 3+ and 4+, and tetravalent Nb (4$d^1$) in the x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Moreover, a reduction in the average oxygen valency with the compressive strain due to enhancement in the covalent character of Co/Nb--O bond is evident. Interestingly, we observe sharp Raman active modes in these thin films, which indicates a significant enhancement in structural ordering as compared to the bulk.

Indirect Search for Dark Matter from the Galactic Center and Halo with the Super-Kamiokande Detector

We present a search for an excess of neutrino interactions due to dark matter in the form of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) annihilating in the galactic center or halo based on the data set of Super-Kamiokande-I, -II, -III and -IV taken from 1996 to 2016. We model the neutrino flux, energy, and flavor distributions assuming WIMP self-annihilation is dominant to $ν\overlineν$, $μ^+μ^-$, $b\overline{b}$, or $W^+W^-$. The excess is in comparison to atmospheric neutrino interactions which are modeled in detail and fit to data. Limits on the self-annihilation cross section $\langle σ_{A} V \rangle$ are derived for WIMP masses in the range 1 GeV to 10 TeV, reaching as low as $9.6 \times10^{-23}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 5 GeV WIMPs in $b\bar b$ mode and $1.2 \times10^{-24}$ cm$^3$ s$^{-1}$ for 1 GeV WIMPs in $ν\bar ν$ mode. The obtained sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande detector to WIMP masses below several tens of GeV is the best among similar indirect searches to date.

Exciton diffusion in a hBN-encapsulated monolayer MoSe2

Excitons, quasi particles composed of an electron and a hole, play an important role in optical responses in low-dimensional nanostructures. In this work, we have investigated exciton diffusion in a monolayer MoSe2 encapsulated between flakes of hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN/MoSe2/hBN). Through PL imaging and numerical solving the 2D diffusion equation, we revealed that temperature dependence of exciton mobility in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN shows non-saturating increase at low temperature, which is qualitatively different from those of quantum wells composed of compound semiconductors. Ultraflat structure of monolayer MoSe2 in the hBN/MoSe2/hBN probably leads to the suppression of charged-impurity scattering and surface-roughness scattering.

Evaluation of Gadolinium's Action on Water Cherenkov Detector Systems with EGADS

Used for both proton decay searches and neutrino physics, large water Cherenkov (WC) detectors have been very successful tools in particle physics. They are notable for their large masses and charged particle detection capabilities. While current WC detectors reconstruct charged particle tracks over a wide energy range, they cannot efficiently detect neutrons. Gadolinium (Gd) has the largest thermal neutron capture cross section of all stable nuclei and produces an 8 MeV gamma cascade that can be detected with high efficiency. Because of the many new physics opportunities that neutron tagging with a Gd salt dissolved in water would open up, a large-scale R&D program called EGADS was established to demonstrate this technique's feasibility. EGADS features all the components of a WC detector, chiefly a 200-ton stainless steel water tank furnished with 240 photo-detectors, DAQ, and a water system that removes all impurities in water while keeping Gd in solution. In this paper we discuss the milestones towards demonstrating the feasibility of this novel technique, and the features of EGADS in detail.

Ultrafast dynamics of the low frequency shear mode in $\mathrm{1T'-MoTe_2}$

We report on the dynamics of coherent phonons in semimetal 1T'-MoTe2 using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. On an ultrafast sub-picosecond time scale at room temperature, a low frequency and long-lifetime shear phonon mode was observed at 0.39 THz, which was previously reported in the form of a characteristic phonon only in the low temperature Td-MoTe2 phase. Unlike the other optical phonon modes, the shear phonon mode was found to strongly couple with photoexcited carriers. Moreover, the amplitude of the shear mode surprisingly decreased with increasing excitation density, a phenomenon which can be attributed to be a consequence of the lattice temperature rising after excitation. These results provide useful physical information on ultrafast lattice symmetry switching between the normal semimetal 1T' and the lattice inversion symmetry breaking Type-II Weyl semimetal Td phases.

Dimensionality reduction and band quantization induced by potassium intercalation in 1$T$-HfTe$_2$

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on transition-metal dichalcogenide 1$T$-HfTe$_2$ to elucidate the evolution of electronic states upon potassium (K) deposition. In pristine HfTe$_2$, an in-plane hole pocket and electron pockets are observed at the Brillouin-zone center and corner, respectively, indicating the semimetallic nature of bulk HfTe$_2$, with dispersion perpendicular to the plane. In contrast, the band structure of heavily K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is obviously different from that of bulk, and resembles the band structure calculated for monolayer HfTe$_2$. It was also observed that lightly K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is characterized by quantized bands originating from bilayer and trilayer HfTe$_2$, indicative of staging. The results suggest that the dimensionality-crossover from 3D (dimensional) to 2D electronic states due to systematic K intercalation takes place via staging in a single sample. The study provides a new strategy for controlling the dimensionality and functionality of novel quantum materials.

Spin dynamics and unconventional magnetism in insulating La$_{(1-2x)}$Sr$_{2x}$Co$_{(1-x)}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$

We study the structural, magnetic, transport and electronic properties of LaCoO$_3$ with Sr/Nb co-substitution, i.e., La$_{(1-2x)}$Sr$_{2x}$Co$_{(1-x)}$Nb$_{x}$O$_3$ using x-ray and neutron diffraction, dc and ac-magnetization, neutron depolarization, dc-resistivity and photoemission measurements. The powder x-ray and neutron diffraction data were fitted well with the rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group \textit{R$\bar{3}$c}) in Rietveld refinement analysis. The calculated effective magnetic moment ($\approx$3.85~$μ_B$) and average spin ($\approx$1.5) of Co ions from the analysis of magnetic susceptibility data are consistent with 3+ state of Co ions in intermediate-spin (IS) and high-spin (HS) states in the ratio of $\approx$50:50, i.e., spin-state of Co$^{3+}$ is preserved at least up to $x=$ 0.1 sample. Interestingly, the magnetization values were significantly increased with respect to the $x=$ 0 sample, and the M-H curves show non-saturated behavior up to an applied maximum magnetic field of $\pm$70 kOe. The ac-susceptibility data show a shift in the freezing temperature with excitation frequency and the detailed analysis confirm the slower dynamics and a non-zero value of the Vogel-Fulcher temperature T$_0$, which suggests for the cluster spin glass. The unusual magnetic behavior indicates the presence of complex magnetic interactions at low temperatures. The dc-resistivity measurements show the insulating nature in all the samples. However, relatively large density of states $\approx$10$^{22}$ eV$^{-1}$cm$^{-3}$ and low activation energy $\approx$130~meV are found in $x=$ 0.05 sample. Using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy, we study the core-level spectra of La 3$d$, Co 2$p$, Sr 3$d$, and Nb 3$d$ to confirm the valence state.

A New Approach for Measuring the Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment and Electric Dipole Moment

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_μ = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_μ$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_μ$ and $d_μ$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_μ$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $1.5\times 10^{-21}~e\cdot\mbox{cm}$.

Solar Neutrino Measurements in Super-Kamiokande-IV

Upgraded electronics, improved water system dynamics, better calibration and analysis techniques allowed Super-Kamiokande-IV to clearly observe very low-energy 8B solar neutrino interactions, with recoil electron kinetic energies as low as 3.49 MeV. Super-Kamiokande-IV data-taking began in September of 2008; this paper includes data until February 2014, a total livetime of 1664 days. The measured solar neutrino flux is (2.308+-0.020(stat.) + 0.039-0.040(syst.)) x 106/(cm2sec) assuming no oscillations. The observed recoil electron energy spectrum is consistent with no distortions due to neutrino oscillations. An extended maximum likelihood fit to the amplitude of the expected solar zenith angle variation of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate in SK-IV results in a day/night asymmetry of (-3.6+-1.6(stat.)+-0.6(syst.))%. The SK-IV solar neutrino data determine the solar mixing angle as sin2 theta_12 = 0.327+0.026-0.031, all SK solar data (SK-I, SK-II, SK III and SKIV) measures this angle to be sin2 theta_12 = 0.334+0.027-0.023, the determined mass-squared splitting is Delta m2_21 = 4.8+1.5-0.8 x10-5 eV2.

Real-Time Supernova Neutrino Burst Monitor at Super-Kamiokande

We present a real-time supernova neutrino burst monitor at Super-Kamiokande (SK). Detecting supernova explosions by neutrinos in real time is crucial for giving a clear picture of the explosion mechanism. Since the neutrinos are expected to come earlier than light, a fast broadcasting of the detection may give astronomers a chance to make electromagnetic radiation observations of the explosions right at the onset. The role of the monitor includes a fast announcement of the neutrino burst detection to the world and a determination of the supernova direction. We present the online neutrino burst detection system and studies of the direction determination accuracy based on simulations at SK.

An Electron-Tracking Compton Telescope for a Survey of the Deep Universe by MeV gamma-rays

Photon imaging for MeV gammas has serious difficulties due to huge backgrounds and unclearness in images, which are originated from incompleteness in determining the physical parameters of Compton scattering in detection, e.g., lack of the directional information of the recoil electrons. The recent major mission/instrument in the MeV band, Compton Gamma Ray Observatory/COMPTEL, which was Compton Camera (CC), detected mere $\sim30$ persistent sources. It is in stark contrast with $\sim$2000 sources in the GeV band. Here we report the performance of an Electron-Tracking Compton Camera (ETCC), and prove that it has a good potential to break through this stagnation in MeV gamma-ray astronomy. The ETCC provides all the parameters of Compton-scattering by measuring 3-D recoil electron tracks; then the Scatter Plane Deviation (SPD) lost in CCs is recovered. The energy loss rate (dE/dx), which CCs cannot measure, is also obtained, and is found to be indeed helpful to reduce the background under conditions similar to space. Accordingly the significance in gamma detection is improved severalfold. On the other hand, SPD is essential to determine the point-spread function (PSF) quantitatively. The SPD resolution is improved close to the theoretical limit for multiple scattering of recoil electrons. With such a well-determined PSF, we demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to provide reliable sensitivity in Compton imaging without utilizing an optimization algorithm. As such, this study highlights the fundamental weak-points of CCs. In contrast we demonstrate the possibility of ETCC reaching the sensitivity below $1\times10^{-12}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ at 1 MeV.

Nonreciprocal magnon propagation in a noncentrosymmetric ferromagnet

Relativistic spin-orbit interaction drastically modifies electronic band and endows emergent functionalities. One of the example is the Rashba effect. In noncentrosymmetric systems such as interface and polar materials, the electronic band is spin-splitted depending on the momentum direction owing to the spin-orbit interaction, which is useful for the electric manipulation of spin current. Similar relativistic band-modification is also emergent for spin wave (magnon) in magnetic materials. The asymmetric magnon band dispersion induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is antisymmetric exchange interaction originating from the spin-orbit interaction, is theoretically expected, and experimentally observed recently in noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets. Here, we demonstrate that the nonreciprocal microwave response can be induced by the asymmetric magnon band in a noncentrosymmetric ferrimagnet LiFe$_5$O$_8$. This result may pave a new path to designing magnonic device based on the relativistic band engineering.

Limits on sterile neutrino mixing using atmospheric neutrinos in Super-Kamiokande

We present limits on sterile neutrino mixing using 4,438 live-days of atmospheric neutrino data from the Super-Kamiokande experiment. We search for fast oscillations driven by an eV$^2$-scale mass splitting and for oscillations into sterile neutrinos instead of tau neutrinos at the atmospheric mass splitting. When performing both these searches we assume that the sterile mass splitting is large, allowing $\sin^2(Δm^2 L/4E)$ to be approximated as $0.5$, and we assume that there is no mixing between electron neutrinos and sterile neutrinos ($|U_{e4}|^2 = 0$). No evidence of sterile oscillations is seen and we limit $|U_{\mu4}|^2$ to less than 0.041 and $|U_{\tau4}|^2$ to less than 0.18 for $Δm^2 > 0.8$ eV$^2$ at the 90% C.L. in a 3+1 framework. The approximations that can be made with atmospheric neutrinos allow these limits to be easily applied to 3+N models, and we provide our results in a generic format to allow comparisons with other sterile neutrino models.

Test of Lorentz invariance with atmospheric neutrinos

A search for neutrino oscillations induced by Lorentz violation has been performed using 4,438 live-days of Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data. The Lorentz violation is included in addition to standard three-flavor oscillations using the non-perturbative Standard Model Extension (SME), allowing the use of the full range of neutrino path lengths, ranging from 15 to 12,800 km, and energies ranging from 100 MeV to more than 100 TeV in the search. No evidence of Lorentz violation was observed, so limits are set on the renormalizable isotropic SME coefficients in the $eμ$, $μτ$, and $eτ$ sectors, improving the existing limits by up to seven orders of magnitude and setting limits for the first time in the neutrino $μτ$ sector of the SME.
