Stochastic gauge: a new technique for quantum simulations

We review progress towards direct simulation of quantum dynamics in many-body systems, using recently developed stochastic gauge techniques. We consider master equations, canonical ensemble calculations and reversible quantum dynamics are compared, as well the general question of strategies for choosing the gauge.

Pair correlations in a finite-temperature 1D Bose gas

We calculate the two-particle local correlation for an interacting 1D Bose gas at finite temperature and classify various physical regimes. We present the exact numerical solution by using the Yang-Yang equations and Hellmann-Feynman theorem and develop analytical approaches. Our results draw prospects for identifying the regimes of coherent output of an atom laser, and of finite-temperature ''fermionization'' through the measurement of the rates of two-body inelastic processes, such as photo-association.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage from an atomic to a molecular Bose-Einstein condensate

The process of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) provides a possible route for the generation of a coherent molecular Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) from an atomic BEC. We analyze this process in a three-dimensional mean-field theory, including atom-atom interactions and non-resonant intermediate levels. We find that the process is feasible, but at larger Rabi frequencies than anticipated from a crude single-mode lossless analysis, due to two-photon dephasing caused by the atomic interactions. We then identify optimal strategies in STIRAP allowing one to maintain high conversion efficiencies with smaller Rabi frequencies and under experimentally less demanding conditions.

Asymptotic solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii gain equation: growth of a Bose-Einstein condensate

We give an asymptotic analytic solution for the generic atom-laser system with gain in a $D$-dimensional trap, and show that this has a non-Thomas-Fermi behavior. The effect is due to Bose-enhanced condensate growth, which creates a local density maximum and a corresponding outward momentum component. In addition, the solution predicts amplified center-of-mass oscillations, leading to enhanced center-of-mass temperature.

Coherent molecular solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the coherent formation of molecular BEC from an atomic BEC, using a parametric field theory approach. We point out the transition between a quantum soliton regime, where atoms couple in a local way - to a classical soliton domain, where a stable coupled-condensate soliton can form in three dimensions. This gives the possibility of an intense, stable atom-laser output.

Superchemistry: dynamics of coupled atomic and molecular Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze the dynamics of a dilute, trapped Bose-condensed atomic gas coupled to a diatomic molecular Bose gas by coherent Raman transitions. This system is shown to result in a new type of `superchemistry', in which giant collective oscillations between the atomic and molecular gas can occur. The phenomenon is caused by stimulated emission of bosonic atoms or molecules into their condensate phases.
