Ultracold bosons with short-range interaction in regular optical lattices

During the last decade, many exciting phenomena have been experimentally observed and theoretically predicted for ultracold atoms in optical lattices. This paper reviews these rapid developments concentrating mainly on the theory. Different types of the bosonic systems in homogeneous lattices of different dimensions as well as in the presence of harmonic traps are considered. An overview of the theoretical methods used for these investigations as well as of the obtained results is given. Available experimental techniques are presented and discussed in connection with theoretical considerations. Eigenstates of the interacting bosons in homogeneous lattices and in the presence of harmonic confinement are analysed. Their knowledge is essential for understanding of quantum phase transitions at zero and finite temperature.

Propagation of quantum correlations after a quench in the Mott-insulator regime of the Bose-Hubbard model

We study a quantum quench in the Bose-Hubbard model where the tunneling rate $J$ is suddenly switched from zero to a finite value in the Mott regime. In order to solve the many-body quantum dynamics far from equlibrium, we consider the reduced density matrices for a finite number (one, two, three, etc.) of lattice sites and split them up into on-site density operators, i.e., the mean field, plus two-point and three-point correlations etc. Neglecting three-point and higher correlations, we are able to numerically simulate the time-evolution of the few-site density matrices and the two-point quantum correlations (e.g., their effective light-cone structure) for a comparably large number ${\cal O}(10^3)$ of lattice sites.

Phase diagram of quasi-two-dimensional bosons in laser speckle potential

We have studied the phase diagram of a quasi-two-dimensional interacting Bose gas at zero temperature in the presence of random potential created by laser speckles. The superfluid fraction and the fraction of particles with zero momentum are obtained within the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii theory and in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations. We find a transition from the superfluid to the insulating state, when the strength of the disorder grows. Estimations of the critical parameters are compared with the predictions of the percolation theory in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Analytical expressions for the zero-momentum fraction and the superfluid fraction are derived in the limit of weak disorder and weak interactions within the framework of the Bogoliubov theory. Limits of validity of various approximations are discussed.

Equilibration and prethermalization in the Bose-Hubbard and Fermi-Hubbard models

We study the Bose and Fermi Hubbard model in the (formal) limit of large coordination numbers $Z\gg1$. Via an expansion into powers of $1/Z$, we establish a hierarchy of correlations which facilitates an approximate analytical derivation of the time-evolution of the reduced density matrices for one and two sites etc. With this method, we study the quantum dynamics (starting in the ground state) after a quantum quench, i.e., after suddenly switching the tunneling rate $J$ from zero to a finite value, which is still in the Mott regime. We find that the reduced density matrices approach a (quasi) equilibrium state after some time. For one lattice site, this state can be described by a thermal state (within the accuracy of our approximation). However, the (quasi) equilibrium state of the reduced density matrices for two sites including the correlations cannot be described by a thermal state. Thus, real thermalization (if it occurs) should take much longer time. This behavior has already been observed in other scenarios and is sometimes called ``pre-thermalization.'' Finally, we compare our results to numerical simulations for finite lattices in one and two dimensions and find qualitative agreement.

Condensate fraction of cold gases in non-uniform external potential

Exact calculation of the condensate fraction in multi-dimensional inhomogeneous interacting Bose systems which do not possess continuous symmetries is a difficult computational problem. We have developed an iterative procedure which allows to calculate the condensate fraction as well as the corresponding eigenfunction of the one-body density matrix. We successfully validate this procedure in diffusion Monte Carlo simulations of a Bose gas in an optical lattice at zero temperature. We also discuss relation between different criteria used for testing coherence in cold Bose systems, such as fraction of particles that are superfluid, condensed or are in the zero-momentum state.

Effects of Interactions and Temperature in Disordered Ultra-Cold Bose Gases

We simulate ultra-cold interacting Bosons in quasi-one-dimensional, incommensurate optical lattices. In the tight-binding limit, these lattices have pseudo-random on-site energies and thus can potentially lead to Anderson localization. We explore the parameter regimes that lead to Anderson localization and investigate the role of repulsive interactions, harmonic confinement and finite temperature. We find that interactions can obscure the exponential localization characteristic of Anderson localization, thus impeding the direct observation of this phenomenon when interactions are present.

Dark solitons near the Mott-insulator--superfluid phase transition

Dark solitons of ultracold bosons in the vicinity of the Mott-insulator--superfluid phase transition are studied. Making use of the Gutzwiller ansatz we have found antisymmetric eigenstates corresponding to standing solitons, as well as propagating solitons created by phase imprinting. Near the phase boundary, superfluidity has either a particle or a hole character depending on the system parameters, which greatly affects the characteristics of both types of solitons. Within the insulating Mott regions, soliton solutions are prohibited by lack of phase coherence between the lattice sites. Linear and modulational stability show that the soliton solutions are sensitive to small perturbations and, therefore, unstable. In general, their lifetimes differ for on-site and off-site modes. For the on-site modes, there are small areas between the Mott-insulator regions where the lifetime is very large, and in particular much larger than that for the off-site modes.

Ultracold bosons in lattices with binary disorder

Quantum phases of ultracold bosons with repulsive interactions in lattices in the presence of quenched disorder are investigated. The disorder is assumed to be caused by the interaction of the bosons with impurity atoms having a large effective mass. The system is described by the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with random on-site energies which have a discrete binary probability distribution. The phase diagram at zero temperature is calculated using several methods like a strong-coupling expansion, an exact numerical diagonalization, and a Bose-Fermi mapping valid in the hard-core limit. It is shown that the Mott-insulator phase exists for any strength of disorder in contrast to the case of continuous probability distribution. We find that the compressibility of the Bose glass phase varies in a wide range and can be extremely low. Furthermore, we evaluate experimentally accessible quantities like the momentum distribution, the static and dynamic structure factors, and the density of excited states. The influence of finite temperature is discussed as well.

Bose-Einstein-condensed gases in arbitrarily strong random potentials

Bose-Einstein-condensed gases in external spatially random potentials are considered in the frame of a stochastic self-consistent mean-field approach. This method permits the treatment of the system properties for the whole range of the interaction strength, from zero to infinity, as well as for arbitrarily strong disorder. Besides a condensate and superfluid density, a glassy number density due to a spatially inhomogeneous component of the condensate occurs. For very weak interactions and sufficiently strong disorder, the superfluid fraction can become smaller than the condensate fraction, while at relatively strong interactions, the superfluid fraction is larger than the condensate fraction for any strength of disorder. The condensate and superfluid fractions, and the glassy fraction always coexist, being together either nonzero or zero. In the presence of disorder, the condensate fraction becomes a nonmonotonic function of the interaction strength, displaying an antidepletion effect caused by the competition between the stabilizing role of the atomic interaction and the destabilizing role of the disorder. With increasing disorder, the condensate and superfluid fractions jump to zero at a critical value of the disorder parameter by a first-order phase transition.

Mean-field phase diagram of disordered bosons in a lattice at non-zero temperature

Bosons in a periodic lattice with on-site disorder at low but non-zero temperature are considered within a mean-field theory. The criteria used for the definition of the superfluid, Mott insulator and Bose glass are analysed. Since the compressibility does never vanish at non-zero temperature, it can not be used as a general criterium. We show that the phases are unambiguously distinguished by the superfluid density and the density of states of the low-energy exitations. The phase diagram of the system is calculated. It is shown that even a tiny temperature leads to a significant shift of the boundary between the Bose glass and superfluid.

Quantum lattice solitons in ultracold bosons near Feshbach resonance

Quantum lattice solitons in a system of two ultracold bosons near Feshbach resonance are investigated. It is shown that their binding energy, effective mass, and spatial width, can be manipulated varying the detuning from the Feshbach resonance. In the case of attractive atomic interactions, the molecule creation stabilizes the solitons. In the case of repulsive interactions, the molecule creation leads to the possibility of existence of bright solitons in some interval of detunings. Due to quantum fluctuations the soliton width is a random quantity. Its standard deviation is larger than the mean value for such a small number of particles.

First- and second-order superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transitions of spin-1 bosons with coupled ground states in optical lattices

We investigate the superfluid--Mott-insulator quantum phase transition of spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice created by pairs of counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams, driving an $F_g=1$ to $F_e=1$ internal atomic transition. The whole parameter space of the resulting two-component Bose-Hubbard model is studied. We find that the phase transition is not always second order as in the case of spinless bosons, but can be first order in certain regions of the parameter space. The calculations are done in the mean-field approximation by means of exact numerical diagonalization as well as within the framework of perturbaton theory.

Spin-1 bosons with coupled ground states in optical lattices

The superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition of ultracold spin-1 bosons with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in an optical lattice is theoretically investigated. Two counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams with the angle $θ$ between the polarization vectors (lin-$θ$-lin configuration), driving an $F_g=1$ to $F_e=1$ internal atomic transition, create the optical lattice and at the same time couple atomic ground states with magnetic quantum numbers $m=\pm 1$. Due to the coupling the system can be described as a two-component one. At $θ=0$ the system has a continuous isospin symmetry, which can be spontaneously broken, thereby fixing the number of particles in the atomic components. The phase diagram of the system and the spectrum of collective excitations, which are density waves and isospin waves, are worked out. In the case of ferromagnetic interactions, the superfluid--Mott-insulator phase transition is always second order, but in the case of antiferromagnetic interactions for some values of system parameters it is first order and the superfluid and Mott phases can coexist. Varying the angle $θ$ one can control the populations of atomic components and continuously turn on and tune their asymmetry.

Interference scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities in Bose-Einstein condensates

Light-induced nonlinear terms in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation arise from the stimulated coherent exchange of photons between two atoms. For atoms in an optical dipole trap this effect depends on the spatial profile of the trapping laser beam. Two different laser beams can induce the same trapping potential but very different nonlinearities. We propose a scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities which is based on this observation.

Interference of atomic levels and superfluid -- Mott insulator phase transition in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

The superfluid -- Mott insulator phase transition in a Bose-Einstein condensate of neutral atoms with doubly degenerate internal ground states in an optical lattice is theoretically investigated. The optical lattice is created by two counterpropagating linearly polarized laser beams with the angle $θ$ between the polarization vectors (lin-angle-lin configuration). The phase diagram of the system and the critical values of the parameters are worked out. It is shown that the sign of the detuning plays an important role and that there is a strong suppression of the Mott transition in the case of blue detuning. Varying the laser intensity and/or the angle $θ$ one can manipulate the Mott-insulator to superfluid quantum phase transition as well as prepare the condensate in physically distinguishable "ferromagnetic" and "antiferromagnetic" superfluid states.

Ultracold Bose atoms in intense laser fields: intensity- and density-dependent effects

Starting from the first principles of nonrelativistic QED we have derived the system of Maxwell-Schrödinger equations, which can be used for theoretical description of atom optical phenomena at high densities of atoms and high intensities of the laser radiation. The role of multiple atomic transitions between ground and excited states in atom optics has been investigated. Nonlinear optical properties of interacting Bose gas are studied: formula for the refractive index has been derived and the polariton spectrum of a condensate interacting with an intense laser field has been investigated.

Discrete structure of ultrathin dielectric films and their surface optical properties

The boundary problem of linear classical optics about the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with a thin dielectric film has been solved under explicit consideration of its discrete structure. The main attention has been paid to the investigation of the near-zone optical response of dielectrics. The laws of reflection and refraction for discrete structures in the case of a regular atomic distribution are studied and the structure of evanescent harmonics induced by an external plane wave near the surface is investigated in details. It is shown by means of analytical and numerical calculations that due to the existence of the evanescent harmonics the laws of reflection and refraction at the distances from the surface less than two interatomic distances are principally different from the Fresnel laws. From the practical point of view the results of this work might be useful for the near-field optical microscopy of ultrahigh resolution.

Local-field effect in atom optics of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Starting from the first principles of nonrelativistic QED we have developed the quantum theory of the interaction of a two-component ultracold atomic ensemble with the electromagnetic field of vacuum and laser photons. The main attention has been paid to the consistent consideration of dynamical dipole-dipole interactions in the radiation field. Taking into account local-field effects we have derived the system of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Optical properties of the two-component Bose gas are investigated. It is shown that the refractive index of the gas is given by the Maxwell-Garnett formula. All equations which are used up to now for the description of the behavior of an ultracold atomic ensemble in a radiation field can be obtained from our general system of equations in the low-density limit. Raman-Nath diffraction of the two-component atomic beam is investigated on the basis of our general system of equations.
