Measuring differential rotation of the K-giant $ζ$\,And

We investigate the temporal spot evolution of the K-giant component in the RS CVn-type binary system $ζ$\,Andromedae to establish its surface differential rotation. Doppler imaging is used to study three slightly overlapping spectroscopic datasets, obtained independently at three different observing sites. Each dataset covers one full stellar rotation with good phase coverage, and in total, results in a continuous coverage of almost three stellar rotations ($P_{\rm rot}=$17.8\,d). Therefore, these data are well suited for reconstructing surface temperature maps and studying temporal evolution in spot configurations. Surface differential rotation is measured by the means of cross-correlation of all the possible image pairs. The individual Doppler reconstructions well agree in the revealed spot pattern, recovering numerous low latitude spots with temperature contrasts of up to $\approx$1000\,K with respect to the unspotted photosphere, and also an asymmetric polar cap which is diminishing with time. Our detailed cross-correlation study consistently indicate solar-type differential rotation with an average surface shear $α\approx0.055$, in agreement with former results.

Surface evolution in stable magnetic fields: the case of the fully convective dwarf V374 Peg

We present BV(RI)_C photometric measurements of the dM4-type V374 Peg covering ~430 days. The star has a mass of ~0.28M_Sun, so it is supposed to be fully convective. Previous observations detected almost-rigid-body rotation and stable, axisymmetric poloidal magnetic field. Our photometric data agree well with this picture, one persistent active nest is found on the stellar surface. Nevertheless, the surface is not static: night-to-night variations and frequent flaring are observed. The flares seem to be concentrated on the brighter part of the surface. The short-time changes of the light curve could indicate emerging flux ropes in the same region, resembling to the active nests on the Sun. We have observed flaring and quiet states of V374 Peg changing on monthly timescale.

The outburst and nature of two young eruptive stars in the North America/Pelican Nebula Complex

Context. In August 2010, the sudden optical brightening of two young stellar objects, located in the North America/Pelican Nebula Complex, was announced. Early observations indicated that these objects may belong to the FUor or EXor class of young eruptive stars. The eruptions of FUors and EXors are often explained by enhanced accretion of material from the circumstellar disk to the protostar. Aims. In order to determine the true nature of these two objects, we started an optical and near-infrared monitoring program, and complemented our data with archival observations and data from the literature. Methods. We plot and analyze pre-outburst and outburst spectral energy distributions (SEDs), multi-filter light curves, and color-color diagrams. Results. HBC 722 brightened monotonically in about two months, and the SED obtained during maximum brightness indicates the appearance of a hot, single-temperature blackbody. The current fading rate implies that the star will return to quiescence in about a year, questioning its classification as a bone fide FUor. The outburst of VSX J205126.1+440523 happened more gradually, but reached an unprecedentedly high amplitude. At 2.5 months after the peak, its light curves show a deep minimum, when the object was close to its pre-outburst optical brightness. Further monitoring indicates that it is still far from being quiescent. Conclusions. The shape of the light curves, the bolometric luminosities and accretion rates suggest that these objects do not fit into the classic FUor group. Although HBC 722 exhibit all spectral characteristics of a bona fide FUor, its luminosity and accretion rate is too low, and its timescale is too fast compared to classical FUors. VSX J205126.1+440523 seems to be an example where quick extinction changes modulate the light curve.

The Multi-periodic Blazhko Modulation of CZ Lacertae

Thorough analysis of the multicolour CCD observations of the RRab-type variable, CZ Lacertae is presented. The observations were carried out in two consecutive observing seasons in 2004 and 2005 within the framework of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey of bright, northern, short-period RRab variables. The O-C variation of CZ Lac indicated that a significant period decrease took place just around the time of the CCD observations. Our data gave a unique opportunity to study the related changes in the pulsation and modulation properties of a Blazhko star in detail. Two different period components ($\approx$14.6 d and $\approx$18.6 d) of the Blazhko modulation were identified. Both modulation components had similar strength. The periods and amplitudes of the modulations changed significantly from the first season to the next, meanwhile, the mean pulsation amplitude slightly decreased. The modulation frequencies were in a 5:4 resonance ratio in the first observing season then the frequencies shifted in opposite directions, and their ratio was close to the 4:3 resonance in the next season. The interaction of the two modulations caused beating with a period of 74~d in the first season, which resembled the 4-yr-long cycle of the $\approx$40-d modulation of RR Lyr. The mean values of the global physical parameters and their changes with Blazhko phase of both modulation components were determined by the Inverse Photometric Method.

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of three rapidly rotating late-type stars: EY Dra, V374 Peg and GSC 02038-00293

Here, BV(RI)c broad band photometry and intermediate resolution spectroscopy in Halpha region are presented for two rapidly rotating late-type stars: EY Dra and V374 Peg. For a third rapid rotator, GSC 02038-00293, intermediate resolution Halpha spectroscopy and low resolution spectroscopy are used for spectral classification and stellar parameter investigation of this poorly known object. The low resolution spectrum of GSC 02038-00293 clearly indicates that it is a K-type star. Its intermediate resolution spectrum can be best fitted with a model with Teff=4750K and vsini=90km/s, indicating a very rapidly rotating mid-K star. The Halpha line strength is variable, indicating changing chromospheric emission on GSC 02038-00293. In the case of EY Dra and V374 Peg, the stellar activity in the photosphere is investigated from the photometric observations, and in the chromosphere from the Halpha line. The enhanced chromospheric emission in EY Dra correlates well with the location of the photospheric active regions, indicating that these features are spatially collocated. Hints of this behaviour are also seen in V374 Peg, but it cannot be confirmed from the current data. The photospheric activity patterns in EY Dra are stable during one observing run lasting several nights, whereas in V374 Peg large night-to-night variations are seen. Two large flares, one in the Halpha observations and one from the broadband photometry, and twelve smaller ones were detected in V374 Peg during the observations spanning nine nights. The energy of the photometrically detected largest flare is estimated to be 4.25x10^31 - 4.3x10^32 ergs, depending on the waveband. Comparing the activity patterns in these two stars, which are just below and above the mass limit of full convection, is crucial for understanding dynamo operation in stars with different internal structures.

Multicolour photometry of the M0V+M5V eclipsing binary V405 And

We present multicolour photometry and modelling of the active eclipsing binary star V405 And. The components of 0.2 and 0.5 solar masses are just below and above the theoretical limit of the full convection, that is thought to be around 0.3 solar mass. The light curves are compositions of constant and variable features: the distorted shape of the components (about 25%), a small eclipse, and mainly of spots (about 75%) and flares.

Four-colour photometry of EY Dra: a study of an ultra-fast rotating active dM1-2e star

We present more than 1000-day long photometry of EY Draconis in BV(RI)C passbands. The changes in the light curve are caused by the spottedness of the rotating surface. Modelling of the spotted surface shows that there are two large active regions present on the star on the opposite hemispheres. The evolution of the surface patterns suggests a flip-flop phenomenon. Using Fourier analysis, we detect a rotation period of P_rot=0.45875d, and an activity cycle with P~350d, similar to the 11-year long cycle of the Sun. This cycle with its year-long period is the shortest one ever detected on active stars. Two bright flares are also detected and analysed.

Photospheric and chromospheric activity in V405 And: An M dwarf binary with components on the two sides of the full convection limit

We investigate the fast-rotating (P_orb=P_rot=0.465d), active dwarf binary V405 And (M0V+M5V) using photometric BV(RI)_C and optical spectroscopic data. The light variation is caused by the combined effect of spottedness and binarity with a small eclipse. We estimate the system parameters from the available light and radial velocity curves. Three flare events occurred during the observations: two were found in the spectroscopic data and one was observed photometrically in BV(RI)_C colours. An interesting eruptive phenomenon emerged from the photometric measurements that can be interpreted as a series of post-flare eruptions lasting for at least 3 orbits (rotations) of the system, originating from trans-equatorial magnetic loops, which connect the active regions in the two hemispheres. The two components of V405 And have masses well over and below the theoretical limit of full convection. This rare property makes the binary an ideal target for observing and testing models for stellar dynamo action.

The Konkoly Blazhko Survey: Is light-curve modulation a common property of RRab stars?

A systematic survey to establish the true incidence rate of the Blazhko modulation among short-period, fundamental-mode, Galactic field RR Lyrae stars has been accomplished. The Konkoly Blazhko Survey (KBS) was initiated in 2004. Since then more than 750 nights of observation have been devoted to this project. A sample of 30 RRab stars was extensively observed, and light-curve modulation was detected in 14 cases. The 47% occurrence rate of the modulation is much larger than any previous estimate. The significant increase of the detected incidence rate is mostly due to the discovery of small-amplitude modulation. Half of the Blazhko variables in our sample show modulation with so small amplitude that definitely have been missed in the previous surveys. We have found that the modulation can be very unstable in some cases, e.g. RY Com showed regular modulation only during one part of the observations while during two seasons it had stable light curve with abrupt, small changes in the pulsation amplitude. This type of light-curve variability is also hard to detect in other Survey's data. The larger frequency of the light-curve modulation of RRab stars makes it even more important to find the still lacking explanation of the Blazhko phenomenon. The validity of the [Fe/H](P,phi_{31}) relation using the mean light curves of Blazhko variables is checked in our sample. We have found that the formula gives accurate result for small-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars, and this is also the case for large-modulation-amplitude stars if the light curve has complete phase coverage. However, if the data of large-modulation-amplitude Blazhko stars are not extended enough (e.g. < 500 data points from < 15 nights), the formula may give false result due to the distorted shape of the mean light curve used.

An extensive photometric study of the Blazhko RR Lyrae star DM Cyg

DM Cyg, a fundamental mode RRab star was observed in the 2007 and 2008 seasons in the frame of the Konkoly Blazhko Survey. Very small amplitude light curve modulation was detected with 10.57 d modulation period. The maximum brightness and phase variations do not exceed 0.07 mag and 7 min, respectively. In spite of the very small amplitude of the modulation, beside the frequency triplets characterizing the Fourier spectrum of the light curve two quintuplet components were also identified. The accuracy and the good phase coverage of our observations made it possible to analyse the light curves at different phases of the modulation separately. Utilizing the IP method (Sódor, Jurcsik and Szeidl, 2009) we could detect very small systematic changes in the global mean physical parameters of DM Cyg during its Blazhko cycle. The detected changes are similar to what we have already found for a large modulation amplitude Blazhko variable MW Lyrae. The amplitudes of the detected changes in the physical parameters of DM Cyg are only about 10% of that what have been found in MW Lyr. This is in accordance with its small modulation amplitude being about one tenth of the modulation amplitude of MW Lyr.

An extensive photometric study of the Blazhko RR Lyrae star MW Lyr: II. Changes in the physical parameters

The analysis of the multicolour photometric observations of MW Lyr, a large modulation amplitude Blazhko variable, shows for the first time how the mean global physical parameters vary during the Blazhko cycle. About 1-2 percent changes in the mean radius, luminosity and surface effective temperature are detected. The mean radius and temperature changes are in good accordance with pulsation model results, which show that these parameters do indeed vary within this order of magnitude if the amplitude of the pulsation changes significantly. We interpret the phase modulation of the pulsation to be a consequence of period changes. Its magnitude corresponds exactly what one expects from the detected changes of the mean radius assuming that the pulsation constant remains the same during the modulation. Our results indicate that during the modulation the pulsation remains purely radial, and the underlying mechanism is most probably a periodic perturbation of the stellar luminosity with the modulation period.

Doppler maps and surface differential rotation of EI Eri from the MUSICOS 1998 observations

We present time-series Doppler images of the rapidly-rotating active binary star EI Eri from spectroscopic observations collected during the MUSICOS multi-site campaign in 1998, since the critical rotation period of 1.947 days makes it impossible to obtain time-resolved images from a single site. From the surface reconstructions a weak solar-type differential rotation, as well as a tiny poleward meridional flow are measured.

An extensive photometric study of the Blazhko RR Lyrae star MW Lyr: I. Light curve solution

We have obtained the most extensive and most accurate photometric data of a Blazhko variable MW Lyr during the 2006-2007 observing seasons. The data within each 0.05 phase bin of the modulation period (P_m=1/f_m) cover the entire light cycle of the primary pulsation period (P_0=1/f_0), making possible a very rigorous and complete analysis. The modulation period is found to be 16.5462 d, which is about half of that was reported earlier from visual observations. Previously unknown features of the modulation have been detected. Besides the main modulation frequency f_m, sidelobe modulation frequencies around the pulsation frequency and its harmonics appear at +/- 2 f_m, +/- 4 f_m, and +/- 12.5 f_m separations as well. Residual signals in the prewhitened light curve larger than the observational noise appear at the minimum-rising branch-maximum phase of the pulsation, which most probably arise from some stochastic/chaotic behaviour of the pulsation/modulation. The Fourier parameters of the mean light curve differ significantly from the averages of the Fourier parameters of the observed light curves in the different phases of the Blazhko cycle. Consequently, the mean light curve of MW Lyrae never matches its actual light variation. The Phi_21, Phi_31 phase differences in different phases of the modulation show unexpected stability during the Blazhko cycle. A new phenomenological description of the light curve variation is defined that separates the amplitude and phase (period) modulations utilising the phase coherency of the lower order Fourier phases.

Pulsational and evolutionary analysis of the double-mode RR Lyrae star BS Com

We derive the basic physical parameters of the field double-mode RR Lyrae star BS Com from its observed periods and the requirement of consistency between the pulsational and evolutionary constraints. By using the current solar-scaled horizontal branch evolutionary models of Pietrinferni et al. (2004) and our linear non-adiabatic purely radiative pulsational models, we get M/M(Sun) = 0.698 +/- 0.004, log(L/L(Sun)) = 1.712 +/- 0.005, T(eff) = 6840 +/- 14 K, [Fe/H] = -1.67 +/- 0.01, where the errors are standard deviations assuming uniform age distribution along the full range of uncertainty in age. The last two parameters are in a good agreement with the ones derived from the observed BVIc colours and the updated ATLAS9 stellar atmosphere models. We get T(eff) = 6842 +/- 10 K, [Fe/H] = -1.58 +/- 0.11, where the errors are purely statistical ones. It is remarkable that the derived parameters are nearly independent of stellar age at early evolutionary stages. Later stages, corresponding to the evolution toward the asymptotic giant branch are most probably excluded because the required high temperatures are less likely to satisfy the constraints posed by the colours. We also show that our conclusions are only weakly sensitive to nonlinear period shifts predicted by current hydrodynamical models.

Anti-solar differential rotation and surface flow pattern on UZ Librae

We re-investigate UZ Librae spectra obtained at KPNO in 1998 and 2000. From the 1998 data we compose 11 consecutive Doppler images using the Ca I-6439, Fe I-6393 and Fe I-6411 lines. Applying the method of average cross-correlation of contiguous Doppler images we find anti-solar differential rotation with a surface shear of alpha ~ -0.03. The pilot application of the local correlation tracking technique for the same data qualitatively confirms this result and indicates complex flow pattern on the stellar surface. From the cross-correlation of the two available Doppler images in 2000 we also get anti-solar differential rotation but with a much weaker shear of alpha ~ -0.004.

Optical flares from the faint mid-dM star 2MASS J00453911+4140396

We present $B$ and $V$ light curves of a large stellar flare obtained with the Wide Field Camera at the Isaac Newton 2.5-m telescope (La Palma). The source object is a faint ($m_V=21.38$) foreground star in the field of the Andromeda galaxy, with its most probable spectral type being dM4. We provide an estimate of the total flare energy in the optical range and find it to be of the order of $10^{35}$ erg. The cooling phase of the large flare shows three additional weak flare-like events, which we interpret as results of a triggering mechanism also observed on the Sun during large coronal mass ejections.

Surface velocity network with anti-solar differential rotation on the active K-giant $σ$ Geminorum

We demonstrate the power of the local correlation tracking technique on stellar data for the first time. We recover the spot migration pattern of the long-period RS CVn-type binary $σ$ Gem from a set of six Doppler images from 3.6 consecutive rotation cycles. The resulting surface flow map suggests a weak anti-solar differential rotation with $α\approx-0.0022\pm0.0016$, and a coherent poleward spot migration with an average velocity of $220\pm10$ m s$^{-1}$. This result agrees with our recent findings from another study and could also be confirmed theoretically.

Results of the photometry of the spotted dM1-2e star EY Draconis

We have observed EY Draconis with the 24`` telescope of Konkoly Observatory in Budapest for 64 nights. In the first obse rving season the star produced a stable light curve for more than 60 rotation periods, however, the light curves observe d in the next season and the spot modelling show clear evidence of the evolution of the spotted stellar surface. The chan ges of the maximum brightness level suggests the existence of a longer period of about 300 days, which seems to be confir med by the ROTSE archival data.
