A tunable macroscopic quantum system based on two fractional vortices

We propose a tunable macroscopic quantum system based on two fractional vortices. Our analysis shows that two coupled fractional vortices pinned at two artificially created κ discontinuities of the Josephson phase in a long Josephson junction can reach the quantum regime where coherent quantum oscillations arise. For this purpose we map the dynamics of this system to that of a single particle in a double-well potential. By tuning the κ discontinuities with injector currents we are able to control the parameters of the effective double-well potential as well as to prepare a desired state of the fractional vortex molecule. The values of the parameters derived from this model suggest that an experimental realisation of this tunable macroscopic quantum system is possible with today's technology.

Theory of fractional vortex escape in a 0-kappa long Josephson junction

We consider a fractional Josephson vortex in an infinitely long 0-kappa Josephson junction. A uniform bias current applied to the junction exerts a Lorentz force acting on a vortex. When the bias current becomes equal to the critical (or depinning) current, the Lorentz force tears away an integer fluxon and the junction switches to the resistive state. In the presence of thermal and quantum fluctuations this escape process takes place with finite probability already at subcritical values of the bias current. We analyze the escape of a fractional vortex by mapping the Josephson phase dynamics to the dynamics of a single particle in a metastable potential and derive the effective parameters of this potential. This allows us to predict the behavior of the escape rate as a function of the topological charge of the vortex.

Quantum tunneling of a single semifluxon in a 0-pi Josephson junction

We consider a symmetric 0-pi Josephson junction of length $L$, which classically can be in one of two degenerate ground states up or down, corresponding to supercurrents circulating clockwise or counterclockwise around the 0-pi boundary. When the length $L$ of the junction becomes smaller than the Josephson penetration depth $λ_J$, the system can switch from one state to the other due to thermal fluctuations or quantum tunneling. We map this problem to the dynamics of a single particle in a periodic double well potential and estimate parameters for which macroscopic quantum coherence may be observed. We conclude that this system is not very promising to build a qubit because (a) it requires very low temperatures to reach the quantum regime, (b) its tiny flux is hard to read out and (c) it is very sensitive to the asymmetries between the 0 and pi parts of the junction.

Quantum tunneling of semifluxons

We consider a system of two semifluxons of opposite polarity in a 0-pi-0 long Josephson junction, which classically can be in one of two degenerate states: up-down or down-up. When the distance $a$ between the 0-pi boundaries (semifluxon's centers) is a bit larger than the crossover distance $a_c$, the system can switch from one state to the other due to thermal fluctuations or quantum tunneling. We map this problem to the dynamics of a single particle in a double well potential and estimate parameters for which quantum effects emerge. We also determine the classical-to-quantum crossover temperature as well as the tunneling rate (energy level splitting) between the states up-down and down-up.

Dynamics of laser-induced lattice formation in Bose-Einstein condensates

We present variational and numerical solutions of the generalized Gross--Pitaevskii equation for an atomic Bose--Einstein condensate with time-dependent, laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions (LIDDI). The formation of a supersolid ground state due to LIDDI in an elongated (cigar-shaped) BEC is investigated. It is found that the supersolid structure emerges if the laser intensity exceeds a critical value, which depends on the linear density of atoms in the BEC.

Generic model of an atom laser

We present a generic model of an atom laser by including a pump and loss term in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We show that there exists a threshold for the pump above which the mean matter field assumes a non-vanishing value in steady-state. We study the transient regime of this atom laser and find oscillations around the stationary solution even in the presence of a loss term. These oscillations are damped away when we introduce a position dependent loss term. For this case we present a modified Thomas-Fermi solution that takes into account the pump and loss. Our generic model of an atom laser is analogous to the semi-classical theory of the laser.
