PANIC: the new panoramic NIR camera for Calar Alto

PANIC is a wide-field NIR camera, which is currently under development for the Calar Alto observatory (CAHA) in Spain. It uses a mosaic of four Hawaii-2RG detectors and covers the spectral range from 0.8-2.5 micron(z to K-band). The field-of-view is 30x30 arcmin. This instrument can be used at the 2.2m telescope (0.45arcsec/pixel, 0.5x0.5 degree FOV) and at the 3.5m telescope (0.23arcsec/pixel, 0.25x0.25 degree FOV). The operating temperature is about 77K, achieved by liquid Nitrogen cooling. The cryogenic optics has three flat folding mirrors with diameters up to 282 mm and nine lenses with diameters between 130 mm and 255 mm. A compact filter unit can carry up to 19 filters distributed over four filter wheels. Narrow band (1%) filters can be used. The instrument has a diameter of 1.1 m and it is about 1 m long. The weight limit of 400 kg at the 2.2m telescope requires a light-weight cryostat design. The aluminium vacuum vessel and radiation shield have wall thicknesses of only 6 mm and 3 mm respectively.

Phase coherent transport in (Ga,Mn)As

Quantum interference effects and resulting quantum corrections of the conductivity have been intensively studied in disordered conductors over the last decades. The knowledge of phase coherence lengths and underlying dephasing mechanisms are crucial to understand quantum corrections to the resistivity in the different material systems. Due to the internal magnetic field and the associated breaking of time-reversal symmetry quantum interference effects in ferromagnetic materials have been scarcely explored. Below we describe the investigation of phase coherent transport phenomena in the newly discovered ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. We explore universal conductance fluctuations in mesoscopic (Ga,Mn)As wires and rings, the Aharonov-Bohm effect in nanoscale rings and weak localization in arrays of wires, made of the ferromagnetic semiconductor material. The experiments allow to probe the phase coherence length L_phi and the spin flip length L_SO as well as the temperature dependence of dephasing.

Weak localization in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As nanostructures

We report on the observation of weak localization in arrays of (Ga,Mn)As nanowires at millikelvin temperatures. The corresponding phase coherence length is typically between 100 nm and 200 nm at 20 mK. Strong spin-orbit interaction in the material is manifested by a weak anti-localization correction around zero magnetic field.

Dephasing in (Ga,Mn)As nanowires and rings

To understand quantum mechanical transport in ferromagnetic semiconductor the knowledge of basic material properties like phase coherence length and corresponding dephasing mechanism are indispensable ingredients. The lack of observable quantum phenomena prevented experimental access to these quantities so far. Here we report about the observations of universal conductance fluctuations in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As. The analysis of the length and temperature dependence of the fluctuations reveals a T^{-1} dependence of the dephasing time.

NbSe3: Effect of Uniaxial Stress on the Threshold Field and Fermiology

We have measured the effect of uniaxial stress on the threshold field ET for the motion of the upper CDW in NbSe3. ET exhibits a critical behavior, ET ~ (1 - e/ec)^g, wher e is the strain, and ec is about 2.6% and g ~ 1.2. This ecpression remains valid over more than two decades of ET, up to the highest fields of about 1.5keV/m. Neither g nor ec is very sensitive to the impurity concentraction. The CDW transition temperature Tp decreases linearly with e at a rate dTp/de = -10K/%, and it does not show any anomaly near ec. Shubnikov de-Haas measurements show that the extremal area of the Fermi surface decreases with increasing strain. The results suggest that there is an intimate relationship between pinning of the upper CDW and the Fermiology of NbSe3.
