Electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting single crystal Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.68}$Se$_2$

The optical properties of the superconducting single crystal Rb$_{0.8}$Fe$_{1.68}$Se$_2$ with $T_{c}$ $\simeq$ 31 K have been measured over a wide frequency range in the $ab$ plane. We found that the optical conductivity is dominated by a series of infrared-active phonon modes at low-frequency region as well as several other high-frequency bound excitations. The low-frequency optical conductivity has rather low value and shows quite small Drude-like response, indicating low carriers density in this material. Furthermore, the phonon modes increase continuously in frequency with decreasing temperature; specifically, the phonon mode around 200 cm$^{-1}$ shows an enhanced asymmetry effect at low temperatures, suggesting an increasing electron-phonon coupling in this system.

The origin of the plateau and late rebrightening in the afterglow of GRB 120326A

GRB 120326A is an unusual gamma-ray burst (GRB) which has a quite long plateau and a very late rebrightening both in X-ray and optical bands. The similar behavior of the optical and X-ray light curves suggests that they maybe have a common origin. The long plateau starts from several hundred seconds and ends at tens of thousands seconds. The peak time of the late rebrightening is about 30000 s. We analyze the energy injection model by means of numerical and analytical solutions, considering both the wind environment and ISM environment for GRB afterglows. We especially study the influence of the injection starting time, ending time, stellar wind density (or density of the circumburst environment), and injection luminosity on the shape of the afterglow light curves, respectively. We find that the light curve is largely affected by the parameters in the wind model. There is a "bump" at the late time only in the wind model too. In the wind case, it is interesting that the longer the energy injected, the more obvious the rebrightening will be. We also find the peak time of bump is determined by the stellar wind density. We use the late continuous injection model to interpret the unusual afterglow of GRB 120326A. The model can well fit the observational data, however, we find that the time scale of the injection must be larger than ten thousands seconds. This implies that the time scale of the central engine activity must be more than ten thousands seconds. This can give useful constraints on the central engine of GRBs. We consider a new born millisecond pulsar with strong magnetic field as the central engine. On the other hand, our results suggest that the circumburst environment of GRB 120326A is very likely a stellar wind.

Free-charge carrier parameters of n-type, p-type and compensated InN:Mg determined by Infrared Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

Infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry is applied to investigate the free-charge carrier properties of Mg-doped InN films. Two representative sets of In-polar InN grown by molecular beam epitaxy with Mg concentrations ranging from $1.2\times10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $8\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ are compared. P-type conductivity is indicated for the Mg concentration range of $1\times10^{18}$ cm$^{-3}$ to $9\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$ from a systematic investigation of the longitudinal optical phonon plasmon broadening and the mobility parameter in dependence of the Mg concentration. A parameterized model that accounts for the phonon-plasmon coupling is applied to determine the free-charge carrier concentration and mobility parameters in the doped bulk InN layer as well as the GaN template and undoped InN buffer layer for each sample. The free-charge carrier properties in the second sample set are consistent with the results determined in a comprehensive analysis of the first sample set reported earlier [Schöche et al., J. Appl. Phys. 113, 013502 (2013)]. In the second set, two samples with Mg concentration of $2.3\times10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ are identified as compensated n-type InN with very low electron concentrations which are suitable for further investigation of intrinsic material properties that are typically governed by high electron concentrations even in undoped InN. The compensated n-type InN samples can be clearly distinguished from the p-type conductive material of similar plasma frequencies by strongly reduced phonon plasmon broadening.

GeV Emission during X-Ray Flares from Late Internal Shocks: Application to GRB 100728A

Recently, the GeV radiation during the X-ray flare activity in GRB 100728A was detected by Feimi/LAT. Here we study the dynamics and emission properties of collision between two homogeneous shells based on the late internal shock model. The GeV photons can be produced from X-ray flare photons up-scattered by relativistic electrons accelerated by forward-reverse shocks, where involved radiative processes include synchrotron self-Compton and crossing inverse-Compton scattering. By analytical and numerical calculations, the observed spectral properties in GRB 100728A can be well explained.

Inference on differences between classes using cluster-specific contrasts of mixed effects

The detection of differentially expressed (DE) genes is one of the most commonly studied problems in bioinformatics. For example, the identification of DE genes between distinct disease phenotypes is an important first step in understanding and developing treatment drugs for the disease. It can also contribute significantly to the construction of a discriminant rule for predicting the class of origin of an unclassified tissue sample from a patient. We present a novel approach to the problem of detecting DE genes that is based on a test statistic formed as a weighted (normalized) cluster-specific contrast in the mixed effects of the mixture model used in the first instance to cluster the gene profiles into a manageable number of clusters. The key factor in the formation of our test statistic is the use of gene-specific mixed effects in the cluster-specific contrast. It thus means that the (soft) assignment of a given gene to a cluster is not crucial. This is because in addition to class differences between the (estimated) fixed effects terms for a cluster, gene-specific class differences also contribute to the cluster-specific contributions to the final form of the test statistic. The proposed test statistic can be used where the primary aim is to rank the genes in order of evidence against the null hypothesis of no DE. We also show how a P-value can be calculated for each gene for use in multiple hypothesis testing where the intent is to control the false discovery rate (FDR) at some desired level. With the use of real and simulated data sets, we show that the proposed contrast-based approach outperforms other methods commonly used for the detection of DE genes both in a ranking context with lower proportion of false discoveries and in a multiple hypothesis testing context with higher power for a specified level of the FDR.

Hydrogen lines in LAMOST low resolution spectra of RR Lyrae stars

The LAMOST spectroscopic survey for Galactic structure and evolution has been in operation since October 2012, following a one-year pilot survey. The pilot survey produced a data release containing over 600,000 stellar spectra. By cross-checking with a large time series photometric database of RR Lyrae stars in high Galactic latitude regions, we found a total number of 157 stars that have been observed with LAMOST. In this sample, we successfully captured three RR Lyrae stars in the fast expansion phase, all of them showing significant hypersonic shock wave features in the spectra. By fitting the Hα line shape, we determine that the emission features seen within the broader Hα absorption line suggest hypersonic relative motions in the atmospheres of these three objects. With a further LAMOST survey of millions of stars, we will capture a large sample of RR Lyrae stars in their hypersonic expansion phase, and therefore provide a large database for the study of the internal structure and pulsation mechanism of RR Lyrae stars.

Charge Relaxation in a Single Electron Si/SiGe Double Quantum Dot

We measure the interdot charge relaxation time T_1 of a single electron trapped in an accumulation mode Si/SiGe double quantum dot. The energy level structure of the charge qubit is determined using photon assisted tunneling, which reveals the presence of a low lying excited state. We systematically measure T_1 as a function of detuning and interdot tunnel coupling and show that it is tunable over four orders of magnitude, with a maximum of 45 microseconds for our device configuration. Measured relaxation times are consistent with a phonon mediated energy relaxation process and indicate that low lying excited states may have important implications in the development of silicon spin qubits.

Single charge sensing and transport in double quantum dots fabricated from commercially grown Si/SiGe heterostructures

We perform quantum Hall measurements on three types of commercially available modulation doped Si/SiGe heterostructures to determine their suitability for depletion gate defined quantum dot devices. By adjusting the growth parameters, we are able to achieve electron gases with charge densities 1-3 X 10^{11}/cm^2 and mobilities in excess of 100,000 cm^2/Vs. Double quantum dot devices fabricated on these heterostructures show clear evidence of single charge transitions as measured in dc transport and charge sensing and exhibit electron temperatures of 100 mK in the single quantum dot regime.

Clustering of time-course gene expression profiles using normal mixture models with AR(1) random effects

Time-course gene expression data such as yeast cell cycle data may be periodically expressed. To cluster such data, currently used Fourier series approximations of periodic gene expressions have been found not to be sufficiently adequate to model the complexity of the time-course data, partly due to their ignoring the dependence between the expression measurements over time and the correlation among gene expression profiles. We further investigate the advantages and limitations of available models in the literature and propose a new mixture model with AR(1) random effects for the clustering of time-course gene-expression profiles. Some simulations and real examples are given to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed models.

Low Q^2 measurements of the proton form factor ratio $mu_p G_E / G_M$

We present an updated extraction of the proton electromagnetic form factor ratio, mu_p G_E/G_M, at low Q^2. The form factors are sensitive to the spatial distribution of the proton, and precise measurements can be used to constrain models of the proton. An improved selection of the elastic events and reduced background contributions yielded a small systematic reduction in the ratio mu_p G_E/G_M compared to the original analysis.

Trigger efficiencies at BES III

Trigger efficiencies at BES III were determined for both the J/psi and psi' data taking of 2009. Both dedicated runs and physics datasets are used; efficiencies are presented for Bhabha-scattering events, generic hadronic decay events involving charged tracks, dimuon events and psi' -> pi+pi-J/psi, J/psi -> l+l- events (l an electron or muon). The efficiencies are found to lie well above 99% for all relevant physics cases, thus fulfilling the BES III design specifications.

Probing Quark-Gluon Interactions with Transverse Polarized Scattering

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer.

Polarization Observables in Deuteron Photodisintegration below 360 MeV

High precision measurements of induced and transferred recoil proton polarization in d(polarized gamma, polarized p})n have been performed for photon energies of 277--357 MeV and theta_cm = 20 degrees -- 120 degrees. The measurements were motivated by a longstanding discrepancy between meson-baryon model calculations and data at higher energies. At the low energies of this experiment, theory continues to fail to reproduce the data, indicating that either something is missing in the calculations and/or there is a problem with the accuracy of the nucleon-nucleon potential being used.

Cross sections and Rosenbluth separations in 1H(e, e'K+)Lambda up to Q2=2.35 GeV2

The kaon electroproduction reaction 1H(e,e'K+)Lambda was studied as a function of the virtual-photon four-momentum, Q2, total energy, W, and momentum transfer, t, for different values of the virtual- photon polarization parameter. Data were taken at electron beam energies ranging from 3.40 to 5.75 GeV. The center of mass cross section was determined for 21 kinematics corresponding to Q2 of 1.90 and 2.35 GeV2 and the longitudinal, sigmaL, and transverse, sigmaT, cross sections were separated using the Rosenbluth technique at fixed W and t. The separated cross sections reveal a flat energy dependence at forward kaon angles not satisfactorily described by existing electroproduction models. Influence of the kaon pole on the cross sections was investigated by adopting an off-shell form factor in the Regge model which better describes the observed energy dependence of sigmaT and sigmaL.

Observations of two-fold shell filling and Kondo effect in a graphene nano-ribbon quantum dot device

A graphene nanoribbon (GNR) with orientation along its principle axis was obtained through a mechanical tearing process, and a quantum dot device was fabricated from the GNR. We have studied the transport property of the GNR quantum dot device down to dilution refrigerator temperatures. Two-fold charging periodicity was observed in the Coulomb-blockade measurement, signaling a shell-filling process with broken valley degeneracy. In one of the smaller Coulomb diamonds, Kondo-like resonance were observed, with two conductance peaks displaced symmetrically from the zero bias voltage. The splitting of Kondo resonance at zero magnetic field suggests spin-polarization of the quantum dot, possibly due to the edge states of a zigzag GNR.

Quark-Hadron Duality in Neutron (3He) Spin Structure

We present experimental results of the first high-precision test of quark-hadron duality in the spin-structure function g_1 of the neutron and $^3$He using a polarized 3He target in the four-momentum-transfer-squared range from 0.7 to 4.0 (GeV/c)^2. Global duality is observed for the spin-structure function g_1 down to at least Q^2 = 1.8 (GeV/c)^2 in both targets. We have also formed the photon-nucleon asymmetry A_1 in the resonance region for 3He and found no strong Q^2-dependence above 2.2 (GeV/c)^2.

Measurements of polarized photo-pion production on longitudinally polarized HD and Implications for Convergence of the GDH Integral

We report new measurements of inclusive pion production from frozen-spin HD for polarized photon beams covering the Delta(1232) resonance. These provide data simultaneously on both H and D with nearly complete angular distributions of the spin-difference cross sections entering the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule. Recent results from Mainz and Bonn exceed the GDH prediction for the proton by 22 microbarns, suggesting as yet unmeasured high-energy components. Our pi0 data reveal a different angular dependence than assumed in Mainz analyses and integrate to a value that is 18 microbarns lower, suggesting a more rapid convergence. Our results for deuterium are somewhat lower than published data, considerably more precise and generally lower than available calculations.

Statistical and dynamical aspects in the decay of hot neutron-rich nuclei

The signal of isospin-asymmetric phase transition in the evolution of the chemical potential was observed for hot quasi-projectiles produced in the reactions 40,48Ca + 27Al confirming an analogous observation in the lighter system 28Si + 112,124Sn. With increasing mass, the properties of hot quasi-projectiles become increasingly influenced by the secondary emission. Thermodynamical observables exhibit no sensitivity to the different number of missing neutrons in the two reactions 40,48Ca + 27Al, thus providing a signal of dynamical emission of neutrons, which can be related to formation of a very neutron-rich low-density region (neck) between the projectile and target.
