Identification of the 4486,4504A emission lines in O-type spectra

Inspired by an appeal to the community from Walborn (these proceedings) we decided to solve the long-standing problem concerning the nature of the 4486,4504A emission lines, which are frequently observed in O-type spectra and which are particularly prominent in supergiants. We claim that these lines emerge from sulfur, namely by de-excitation of a highly excited S IV doublet state. We prove this by an exploratory NLTE calculation with a detailed model atom.

Multiplicity of different hadrons in e+e-, pp, and AA collisions

Employing the recently developed neXus model, we compare the yields of different hadrons in ultra-relativistic collisions: electron-positron annihilation at 91 GeV, proton-proton scattering at 17 GeV and nucleus-nucleus collisions at 17 GeV (SPS) and 200 GeV (RHIC). Plotting the yields as a function of the hadron masses, we find very surprising results: we observe that the spectra are practically identical for e+e- at 91 GeV and central nucleus-nucleus reactions at SPS and RHIC energies, whereas the spectrum for proton-proton scattering is somewhat steeper. All have the form one expects if the particles were emitted by a canonical system which is characterized by a temperature and chemical potentials. These identical forms have, however, different origins: in e+e- and pp the exponential shape it is due to the statistical behavior of string fragmentation, which has absolutely nothing to do with thermalization, in AA it is caused by phase space. The fact that e+e- and nuclear results agree is pure coincidence. Surprisingly the results for pp and e+e- differ, although here the production mechanism is identical. In pp collisions we see directly that the string energy is very limited and hence the high mass baryons are suppressed. We conclude that it is practically impossible to draw conclusions from hadronic yields about the reaction mechanism.

Spectral analysis of multi mode pulsating sdB stars II. Feige 48, KPD 2109+4401 and PG 1219+534

Three members of the new class of pulsating sdB stars (sdBV or EC 14026 stars) are analysed from Keck HIRES spectra using line blanketed NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, He/H), metal abundances and rotational velocities are determined. As is typical for sdB stars, all programme stars are found to be helium deficient, with a He abundance ranging from 1/80 solar for Feige 48 to 1/3 solar for PG 1219+534, probably due to diffusion. Most metals are also depleted. The abundances of C, O, Ne, Mg, Al and Si in the high gravity programme stars KPD 2109+4401 and PG 1219+534 are considerably lower than in the lower gravity stars Feige 48 and PG 1605+072 which could be explained by an equilibrium between gravitational settling and radiative levitation. Surprisingly iron is solar to within error limits in all programme stars irrespective of their gravity, confirming predictions from diffusion calculations. The metal lines are very sharp and allow the microturbulent velocity to be constrained to be lower than 5km/s (KPD2109+4401, PG 1219+534). Also the projected rotational velocities have to be very low (vrot sini<10km/s). For Feige 48 the limits are even tighter (vmicro<=3km/s, vrot sini<=5km/s).

Cosmic Ray Air Shower Characteristics in the Framework of the Parton-Based Gribov-Regge Model NEXUS

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we want to introduce a new type of hadronic interaction model (NEXUS), which has a much more solid theoretical basis as, for example, presently used models like QGSJET and VENUS, and ensures therefore a much more reliable extrapolation towards high energies. Secondly, we want to promote an extensive air shower (EAS) calculation scheme, based on cascade equations rather than explicit Monte Carlo simulations, which is very accurate in calculations of main EAS characteristics and extremely fast concerning computing time. We employ the NEXUS model to provide the necessary data on particle production in hadron-air collisions and present the average EAS characteristics for energies 10^14 - 10^17 eV. The experimental data of the casa-blanka group are analyzed in the framework of the new model.

Parton-Based Gribov-Regge Theory

We present a new parton model approach for hadron-hadron interactions and, in particular, for the initial stage of nuclear collisions at very high energies (RHIC, LHC and beyond). The most important aspect of our approach is a self-consistent treatment, using the same formalism for calculating cross sections and particle production, based on an effective, QCD-inspired field theory, where many of the inconsistencies of presently used models will be avoided. In addition, we provide a unified treatment of soft and hard scattering, such that there is no fundamental cutoff parameter any more defining an artificial border between soft and hard scattering. Our approach cures some of the main deficiencies of two of the standard procedures currently used: the Gribov-Regge theory and the eikonalized parton model. There, cross section calculations and particle production cannot be treated in a consistent way using a common formalism. In particular, energy conservation is taken care of in case of particle production, but not concerning cross section calculations. In addition, hard contributions depend crucially on some cutoff, being divergent for the cutoff being zero. Finally, in case of several elementary scatterings, they are not treated on the same level: the first collision is always treated differently than the subsequent ones. All these problems are solved in our new approach.

The iron abundance in hot central stars of planetary nebulae derived from IUE spectra

We present the first attempt to determine the iron abundance in hot central stars of planetary nebulae. We perform an analysis with fully metal-line blanketed NLTE model atmospheres for a sample of ten stars (T_eff >= 70.000 K) for which high-resolution UV spectra are available from the IUE archive. In all cases lines of Fe VI or Fe VII can be identified. As a general trend, the iron abundance appears to be subsolar by 0.5-1 dex, however, the S/N of the IUE spectra is not sufficient to exclude a solar abundance in any specific case. Improved spectroscopy by either FUSE or HST is necessary to verify the possibility of a general iron deficiency in central stars. The suspected deficiency may be the result of gravitational settling in the case of three high-gravity objects. For the other stars with low gravity and high luminosity dust fractionation during the previous AGB phase is a conceivable origin.

On the Role of Energy Conservation in High-Energy Nuclear Scattering

We argue that most commonly used models for nuclear scattering at ultra-relativistic energies do not treat energy conservation in a consistent fashion. Demanding theoretical consistency as a minimal requirement for a realistic model, we provide a solution for the above-mentioned problem, the so-called ``Parton-Based Gribov-Regge Theory''. In order to keep a clean picture, we do not consider secondary interactions. We provide a very transparent extrapolation of the physics of more elementary interactions towards nucleus-nucleus scattering, without considering any nuclear effects due to final state interactions. In this sense we consider our model a realistic and consistent approach to describe the initial stage of nuclear collisions.

The discovery of photospheric nickel in the hot DO white dwarf REJ0503-289

We present the first evidence for the direct detection of nickel in the photosphere of the hot DO white dwarf REJ0503$-$289. While this element has been seen previously in the atmospheres of hot H-rich white dwarfs, this is one of the first similar discoveries in a He-rich object. Intriguingly, iron, which is observed to be more abundant than Ni in the hot DA stars, is not detected, the upper limit to its abundance (Fe/He$=10^{-6}$) implying a Fe/Ni ratio a factor 10 lower than seen in the H-rich objects (Ni/He$=10^{-5}$ for REJ0503$-$289). The abundance of nickel and various other elements heavier than He were determined from GHRS spectra. We used two completely independent sets of NLTE model atmospheres which both provide the same results. This not only reduces the possibility of systematic errors in our analysis but is also an important consistency check for both model atmosphere codes. We have also developed a more objective method of determining $T_{\rm eff}$ and log g, from the He lines in the optical spectrum, in the form of a formal fitting of the line profiles to a grid of model spectra, an analogue of the standard procedure utilising the Balmer lines in DA white dwarfs. This gives the assigned uncertainties in $T_{\rm eff}$ and log g a firm statistical basis and allows us to demonstrate that inclusion of elements heavier than H, He and C in the spectral calculations, exclusively considered in most published optical analyses, yields a systematic downward shift in the measured value of $T_{\rm eff}$.

Spectral analysis of four multi mode pulsating sdB stars

Four members of the new class of pulsating sdB stars are analysed from Keck HIRES spectra using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances and rotational velocities are determined. Balmer line fitting is found to be consistent with the helium ionization equilibrium for PG1605+072 but not so for PG1219+534 indicating that systematic errors in the model atmosphere analysis of the latter have been underestimated previously. All stars are found to be helium deficient probably due to diffusion. The metals are also depleted with the notable exception of iron which is solar to within error limits in all four stars, confirming predictions from diffusion calculations of Charpinet et al. (1997). While three of them are slow rotator's (vsini < 10km/s), PG1605+072 displays considerable rotation (vsini = 39km/s, P<8.7h) and is predicted to evolve into an unusually fast rotating white dwarf. This nicely confirms a prediction by Kawaler (1999) who deduced a rotation velocity of 130km/s from the power spectrum of the pulsations which implies a low inclination angle of the rotation axis.

Spectral analysis of the multi mode pulsating subluminous B star PG1605+072

PG 1605+072 has unique pulsational properties amongst the members of the new class of pulsating sdB (EC 14026) stars. It has the longest periods and the richest, most puzzling frequency spectrum (55 periods). We present a quantitative analysis of a Keck HIRES spectrum using NLTE and LTE model atmospheres. Atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, log(He/H)), metal abundances, and the rotational velocity are determined. He, C, N and O are subsolar as well as the intermediate mass elements Mg and Si, whereas Ne and Fe are solar. This abundance pattern is caused by diffusion. PG 1605+072 displays considerable line broadening probably caused by rotation (vsini = 39km/s, P<8.7h) and, therefore, is predicted to evolve into an unusually fast rotating white dwarf. Unequal rotational splitting may explain its puzzling pulsation pattern. The solar Fe abundance and the rapid rotation nicely confirms recent predictions of diffusion/pulsation models.

A New Approach to Nuclear Collisions at RHIC Energies

We present a new parton model approach for nuclear collisions at RHIC energies (and beyond). It is a selfconsistent treatment, using the same formalism for calculating cross sections like the total and the inelastic one and, on the other hand, particle production. Actually, the latter one is based on an expression for the total cross section, expanded in terms of cut Feynman diagrams. Dominant diagrams are assumed to be composed of parton ladders between any pair of nucleons, with ordered virtualities from both ends of the ladder.

The EUV spectrum of the unique bare stellar core H1504+65

We performed a spectral analysis of the EUVE spectrum and ROSAT data of the unique object H1504+65, which is an extremely hot post-AGB star entering the white dwarf cooling sequence. It is the only pre-white dwarf known, whose surface is free of hydrogen and helium, hence, it represents the bare core of a former AGB star. The EUV spectrum (75--150A) is dominated by strong OVI lines and we can identify a number of NeVII lines. EUVE and ROSAT data can be fitted with models between Teff=170000 K and 200000 K. We derive an extraordinarily high neon abundance (2%--5% by mass, i.e. 20--50 times solar) which we confirm by an optical NeVII line detected in a Keck HIRES echelle spectrum. This abundance is expected for 3-alpha processed matter and corroborates our understanding of H1504+65 as a C-O stellar core which has lost its entire H- and He-rich envelopes.

The Classical Stellar Atmosphere Problem

We introduce the classical stellar atmosphere problem and describe in detail its numerical solution. The problem consists of the solution of the radiation transfer equations under the constraints of hydrostatic, radiative and statistical equilibrium (non-LTE). We outline the basic idea of the Accelerated Lambda Iteration (ALI) technique and statistical methods which finally allow the construction of non-LTE model atmospheres considering the influence of millions of metal absorption lines. Some applications of the new models are presented.

A Unified Treatment of High Energy Interactions

It is well known that high energy interactions as different as electron-positron annihilation, deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering, proton-proton interactions, and nucleus-nucleus collisions have many features in common. Based upon this observation, we construct a model for all these interactions, which relies on the fundamental hypothesis that the behavior of high energy interactions is universal.

ORFEUS II echelle spectra: The scale height of interstellar O VI in the halo

FUV high resolution spectra of 18 stars, particularly chosen to observe the interstellar medium (ISM), were obtained during the second ORFEUS-SPAS free flight space shuttle mission in December 1996. Among these were 6 objects with a distance to the galactic plane larger than 1 kpc, one SMC and 4 LMC stars. This selction of targets is part of the ORFEUS program to explore the galactic halo. As the most important tracer of the hot gas we analyzed the stronger component of the important O VI doublet in all our ISM spectra. We found an average N(O VI) x sin |b| = 3.5 x 10^14 /cm^2 on the lines of sight to the 4 LMC stars. Assuming an exponential distribution of O VI we calculated a midplane density n(o) of 2.07 x 10^-8 /cm^3 and a scle height h(o) of 5.50 kpc. (Research supported in part by the DARA)

ORFEUS II echelle spectra: Detection of H_2 absorption in SMC gas

We present a study of molecular hyrogen (H_2) in the SMC gas, based on space shuttle Far UV spectroscopy with ORFEUS and the Tuebingen echelle spectrograph, in the line of sight to the SMC star HD 5980. 17 absorption lines from the Lyman band have been analysed. Our line of sight crosses two clouds within the SMC. We detect a cool molecular component near +120 km/s, where the H_2 from the lowest 3 rotational states (J<3) is found. For this cloud we derive an excitation temperature of 70 K, probably the kinetic temerature of the gas. The cloud is located in the SMC foreground. Another SMC component is visible at +160 km/s. Here we find unblended H_2 absorption lines from levels 4 < J < 8. For this component we obtain an equivalent excitation temperature T > 2350 K and conclude that this cloud must be highly excited by strong UV radiation from its energetic environment.
