On the Role of Initial Conditions and Final State Interactions in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We investigate the rapidity dependence of the elliptical flow in heavy ion collisions at 200 GeV (cms), by employing a three-dimensional hydrodynamic evolution, based on different initial conditions, and different freeze-out scenarios. It will be shown that the form of pseudo-rapidity ($η$) dependence of the elliptical flow is almost identical to space-time-rapidity ($η_{s}$) dependence of the initial energy distribution, independent of the freeze-out prescriptions.

Models of magnetized neutron star atmospheres: thin atmospheres and partially ionized hydrogen atmospheres with vacuum polarization

Observed X-ray spectra of some isolated magnetized neutron stars display absorption features, sometimes interpreted as ion cyclotron lines. Modeling the observed spectra is necessary to check this hypothesis and to evaluate neutron star parameters. We develop a computer code for modeling magnetized neutron star atmospheres in a wide range of magnetic fields (10^{12} - 10^{15} G) and effective temperatures (3 \times 10^5 - 10^7 K). Using this code, we study the possibilities to explain the soft X-ray spectra of isolated neutron stars by different atmosphere models. The atmosphere is assumed to consist either of fully ionized electron-ion plasmas or of partially ionized hydrogen. Vacuum resonance and partial mode conversion are taken into account. Any inclination of the magnetic field relative to the stellar surface is allowed. We use modern opacities of fully or partially ionized plasmas in strong magnetic fields and solve the coupled radiative transfer equations for the normal electromagnetic modes in the plasma. Spectra of outgoing radiation are calculated for various atmosphere models: fully ionized semi-infinite atmosphere, thin atmosphere, partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere, or novel "sandwich" atmosphere (thin atmosphere with a hydrogen layer above a helium layer. Possibilities of applications of these results are discussed. In particular, the outgoing spectrum using the "sandwich" model is constructed. Thin partially ionized hydrogen atmospheres with vacuum polarization are shown to be able to improve the fit to the observed spectrum of the nearby isolated neutron star RBS 1223 (RX J1308.8+2127).

Centrality Dependence of Strangeness Enhancement in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions - a Core-Corona Effect

In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, the multiplicity of multi-strange baryons per participating nucleon increases with centrality in a different fashion for different systems and energies. At RHIC, for copper+copper (CuCu) collisions the increase is much steeper than for gold-gold (AuAu) collisions. We show that this system size dependence is due to a core-corona effect: the relative importance of the corona as compared to the core (thermalized matter) contribution varies and the contribution of a corona nucleon to the multiplicity differs from that of a core nucleon. $ϕ$ mesons follow in principle the same trend, but the difference between core and corona multiplicity is relatively small, and therefore the CuCu and AuAu results are quite similar. This simple geometrical explanation makes also a strong case in favor of the validity of Glauber geometry in the peripheral regions of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, which is crucial for understanding the early evolution of the system.

EPOS Model and Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays

Interpretation of extensive air showers (EAS) experiments results is strongly based on air shower simulations. The latter being based on hadronic interaction models, any new model can help for the understanding of the nature of cosmic rays. The EPOS model reproducing all major results of existing accelerator data (including detailed data of RHIC experiments) has been introduced in air shower simulation programs CORSIKA and CONEX few years ago. The new EPOS 1.99 has recently been updated taking into account the problem seen in EAS development using EPOS 1.61. We will show in details the relationship between some EPOS hadronic properties and EAS development, as well as the consequences on the model and finally on cosmic ray analysis.

Accretion Disk Winds in AM CVn Binaries - a Monte Carlo Approach

AM CVn systems are interacting binaries similar to cataclysmic variables (CVs), but more compact with orbital periods of less than 80 minutes. The primary is a white dwarf, whereas the nature of the secondary is not completely clear, yet. Abundances and composition of the outer layer of the secondary can be found by analysis of the accretion disk (presented by Nagel et al. these proceedings). Spectra from high-state AM CVn systems do not only show typical signatures of accretion disks, but also P Cygni line profiles, a sign of outflow being present in the system. Here we present the first quantitative spectral analysis of an accretion-disk wind in AM CVn systems. Emergent wind spectra are modeled with our 3-D Monte Carlo radiative transfer code WOMPAT. We show that P Cygni profiles can be reproduced with our wind models.

Discovery of photospheric CaX emission lines in the far-UV spectrum of the hottest known white dwarf (KPD0005+5106)

For the first time, we have identified photospheric emission lines in the far-UV spectrum of a white dwarf. They were discovered in the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectrum of the hot (Teff~200,000 K) DO white dwarf KPD0005+5106 and they stem from extremely highly ionized calcium (CaX 1137, 1159 Ang). Their photospheric origin is confirmed by non-LTE line-formation calculations. This is the highest ionisation stage of any element ever observed in a stellar photosphere. Calcium has never been detected before in any hot white dwarf or central star of planetary nebula. The calcium abundance determination for KPD0005+5106 (1-10 times solar) is difficult, because the line strengths are rather sensitive to current uncertainties in the knowledge of effective temperature and surface gravity. We discuss the possibility that the calcium abundance is much lower than expected from diffusion/levitation equilibrium theory. The same emission lines are exhibited by the [WCE]-type central star NGC2371. Another CaX line pair (1461, 1504 Ang) is probably present in a Hubble Space Telescope spectrum of the PG1159-type central star NGC246.

Spectral modeling of gaseous metal disks around DAZ white dwarfs

We report on our attempt for the first non-LTE modeling of gaseous metal disks around single DAZ white dwarfs recently discovered by Gaensicke et al. and thought to originate from a disrupted asteroid. We assume a Keplerian rotating viscous disk ring composed of calcium and hydrogen and compute the detailed vertical structure and emergent spectrum. We find that the observed infrared CaII emission triplet can be modeled with a hydrogen-deficient gas ring located at R=1.2 R_sun, inside of the tidal disruption radius, with Teff about 6000 K and a low surface mass density of about 0.3 g/cm**2. A disk having this density and reaching from the central white dwarf out to R=1.2 R_sun would have a total mass of 7 10**21 g, corresponding to an asteroid with about 160 km diameter.

Influence of Compton scattering on the broad-band X-ray spectra of intermediate polars

The majority of cataclysmic variables observed in the hard X-ray energy band are intermediate polars where the magnetic field is strong enough to channel the accreting matter to the magnetic poles of the white dwarf. A shock above the stellar surface heats the gas to fairly high temperatures (10--100 keV). The post-shock region cools mostly via optically thin bremsstrahlung. We investigate the influence of Compton scattering on the structure and the emergent spectrum of the post-shock region. We also study the effect it has on the mass of the white dwarfs obtained from fitting the observed X-ray spectrum of intermediate polars. We construct the model of the post-shock region taking Compton scattering into account. The radiation transfer equation is solved in the plane-parallel approximation. The feedback of Compton scattering on the structure of the post-shock region is also accounted for. A set of the post-shock region model spectra for various white dwarf masses is calculated. We find that Compton scattering does not change the emergent spectra significantly for low accretion rates or low white dwarf masses. However, it becomes important at high accretion rates and high white dwarf masses. The time-averaged, broad-band X-ray spectrum of intermediate polar V709 Cas obtained by the RXTE and INTEGRAL observatories is fitted using the set of computed spectral models. We obtained the white dwarf mass of 0.91 +/- 0.02 M_sun and 0.88 +/- 0.02 M_sun using models with Compton scattering taken into account and without it, respectively.

O(He) Stars

Spectral analyses of H-deficient post-AGB stars have shown that a small group of four extremely hot objects exists which have almost pure He absorption-line spectra in the optical. These are classified as O(He) stars. For their evolution there are two scenarios: They could be the long-sought hot successors of RCrB stars, which have not been identified up to now. If this turns out to be true, then a third post-AGB evolutionary sequence is revealed, which is probably the result of a double-degenerate merging process. An alternative explanation might be that O(He) stars are post early-AGB stars. These depart from the AGB just before they experience their first thermal pulse (TP) which will then occur as a late thermal pulse (LTP). This would be a link to the low-mass He-enriched sdO stars and low-mass, particularly He-rich PG1159 stars.

UV and FUV spectroscopy of the hybrid PG 1159-type central star NGC 7094

Previous studies aiming at the iron-abundance determination in three PG 1159 stars (K 1-16, PG 1159-035, NGC 7094) and a [WC]-PG 1159 transition star (Abell 78) have revealed that no object shows any iron line in the UV spectrum. The stars are iron-deficient by at least 1 dex, typically. A possible explanation is that iron nuclei were transformed by neutron captures into heavier elements (s-process), however, the extent of the iron-destruction would be much stronger than predicted by AGB star models. But if n-captures are the right explanation, then we should observe an enrichment of trans-iron elements. In this paper we report on our search for a possible nickel overabundance in one of the four Fe deficient PG 1159 stars, namely the central star NGC 7094. We are unable to identify any nickel line in HST and FUSE spectra and conclude that Ni is not overabundant. It is conceivable that iron was transformed into even heavier elements, but their identification suffers from the lack of atomic data.

Search For Iron, Nickel, and Fluorine in PG1159 Stars

A possible origin of the iron-deficiency in PG1159 stars could be neutron captures on Fe nuclei. A nickel overabundance would corroborate this idea. Consequently we are looking for nickel lines in PG1159 stars. Prime targets are relatively cool objects, because Ni VI is the dominant ionisation stage and the spectral lines of this ion are accessible with UV observations. We do not find such lines in the coolest PG1159 star observed by FUSE (PG1707+427, Teff = 85,000 K) and conclude that the nickel abundance is not enhanced. Hence, the Fe-deficiency in PG1159 stars remains unexplained. In addition, we present results of a wind analysis of the hybrid-PG1159 star NGC 7094 and the [WC]-PG1159 transition-type object Abell 78 in order to derive F abundances from the F VI 1139.5 Angstrom line. In both cases, we find F overabundances, in agreement with results of photospheric analyses of many PG1159 stars. Surprisingly, we find indications for a very low O abundance in NGC 7094.

Latest Results from the Air Shower Simulation Programs CORSIKA and CONEX

Interpretation of EAS measurements strongly depends on detailed air shower simulations. The uncertainty in the prediction of shower observables for different primary particles and energies is currently dominated by differences between hadronic interaction models. The new models QGSJETII-3 and EPOS 1.6, which reproduce all major results of existing accelerator data (including detailed data of RHIC experiments for EPOS), have been implemented in the air shower simulation programs CORSIKA and CONEX. We show predictions of these new models and compare them with those from older models such as QGSJET01 or SIBYLL. Results for important air shower observables are discussed in detail.

The focal-plane instruments on board WSO-UV

Dedicated to spectroscopic and imaging observations of the ultraviolet sky, the World Space Observatory for Ultraviolet Project is a Russia led international collaboration presently involving also China, Germany, Italy, Spain and Ukraine. The mission consists of a 1.7m telescope able to perform: a) high resolution (R greater than 60000) spectroscopy by means of two echelle spectrographs covering the 103-310 nm range; b) long slit (1x75 arcsec) low resolution (R about 1500-2500) spectroscopy using a near-UV channel and a far-UV channel to cover the 102-310nm range; c) deep UV and diffraction limited UV and optical imaging (from 115 to 700 nm). Overall information on the project and on its science objectives are given by other two papers in these proceedings. Here we present the WSO-UV focal plane instruments, their status of implementation, and the expected performances.

HIRDES - The High-Resolution Double-Echelle Spectrograph for the World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO/UV)

The World Space Observatory Ultraviolet (WSO/UV) is a multi-national project grown out of the needs of the astronomical community to have future access to the UV range. WSO/UV consists of a single UV telescope with a primary mirror of 1.7m diameter feeding the UV spectrometer and UV imagers. The spectrometer comprises three different spectrographs, two high-resolution echelle spectrographs (the High-Resolution Double-Echelle Spectrograph, HIRDES) and a low-dispersion long-slit instrument. Within HIRDES the 102-310nm spectral band is split to feed two echelle spectrographs covering the UV range 174-310nm and the vacuum-UV range 102-176nm with high spectral resolution (R>50,000). The technical concept is based on the heritage of two previous ORFEUS SPAS missions. The phase-B1 development activities are described in this paper considering performance aspects, design drivers, related trade-offs (mechanical concepts, material selection etc.) and a critical functional and environmental test verification approach. The current state of other WSO/UV scientific instruments (imagers) is also described.

Elemental Abundances in PG1159 Stars

The hydrogen-deficiency in extremely hot post-AGB stars of spectral class PG1159 is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse that consumes the hydrogen envelope, exposing the usually-hidden intershell region. Thus, the photospheric elemental abundances of these stars allow to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We compare predicted elemental abundances to those determined by quantitative spectral analyses performed with advanced non-LTE model atmospheres. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement is found for many species (He, C, N, O, Ne, F, Si, Ar) but discrepancies for others (P, S, Fe) point at shortcomings in stellar evolution models for AGB stars. PG1159 stars appear to be the direct progeny of [WC] stars.

KPD0005+5106: Hottest DO White Dwarf Much Hotter Than Assumed

KPD0005+5106 is the hottest known helium-rich white dwarf. We have identified NeVIII lines in UV and optical spectra and conclude that it is significantly hotter than previously thought, namely Teff=200,000 K instead of 120,000 K. This is a possible explanation for the observed hard X-ray emission as being of photospheric origin. Concerning its evolutionary state, we suggest that KPD0005+5106 is not a descendant of a PG1159 star but more probably related to the O(He) stars and RCrB stars.
