First design of a crystal-based extraction of 6 GeV electrons for the DESY II Booster Synchrotron

A proof-of-principle experimental setup for the extraction of 6 GeV electrons from the DESY II Booster Synchrotron using the channeling effect in a bent crystal is elaborated. Various aspects of the experimental setup were investigated in detail, such as the particle beam dynamics during the extraction process, the manufacturing and characterization of bent crystals, and the detection of the extracted beam. In order to optimize the crystal geometry, the overall process of beam extraction was simulated, taking into account the influence of radiation energy losses. As result it is concluded that the multi-turn electron beam extraction efficiency can reach up to 16 %. In principle this crystal-based beam extraction technique can be applied at any electron synchrotron in order to provide multi-GeV electron beams in a parasitic mode. This technique will allow to supply fixed-target experiments by intense high-quality monoenergetic electron beams. Furthermore, electron/positron crystal-based extraction from future lepton colliders may provide an access to unique experimental conditions for ultra-high energy fixed-target experiments including searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Introduction to Beam Instrumentation and Diagnostics

These lectures aim to describe instruments and methods used for measuring beam parameters in particle accelerators. Emphasis will be given to new detection and analysis techniques in each field of accelerator instrumentation. A clear distinction is made between 'instrumentation', the design and construction of the instruments themselves, and 'diagnostics', the use of the data from these instruments for running and improving the performance of the accelerator.

Laser Wire Scanner Compton Scattering Techniques for the Measurement of the Transverse Beam Size of Particle Beams at Future Linear Colliders

This archive summarizes a working paper and conference proceedings related to laser wire scanner development for the Future Linear Collider (FLC) in the years 2001 to 2006. In particular the design, setup and data taking for the laser wire experiments at PETRA II and CT2 are described. The material is focused on the activities undertaken by Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL).

Twisting wire scanner

A new type of 'two-in-one' wire scanner is proposed. Recent advances in linear motors' technology make it possible to combine translational and rotational movements. This will allow to scan the beam in two perpendicular directions using a single driving motor and a special fork attached to it. Vertical or horizontal mounting will help to escape problems associated with the 45 deg scanners. Test results of the translational part with linear motors is presented.

Dark Current Measurements on a Superconducting Cavity using a Cryogenic Current Comparator

This paper presents non-destructive dark current measurements of superconducting TESLA cavities for superconducting LINACs. The measurements were carried out in a highly disturbed accelerator environment using a low temperature superconducting d.c. SQUID based Cryogenic Current Comparator (CCC). The overall current sensitivity under these rough conditions was measured to be 0.2 nA/sqrt(Hz) which enables the detection of dark currents of 5 nA.

Beam Profile Measurements and Simulations of the PETRA Laser-Wire

The Laser-wire will be an essential diagnostic tool at the International Linear Collider. It uses a finely focussed laser beam to measure the transverse profile of electron bunches by detecting the Compton-scattered photons (or degraded electrons) downstream of where the laser beam intersects the electron beam. Such a system has been installed at the PETRA storage ring at DESY, which uses a piezo-driven mirror to scan the laser-light across the electron beam. Lat- est results of experimental data taking are presented and compared to detailed simulations using the Geant4 based program BDSIM.

Precision geometric parameter gage for synchrotron radiation

This article includes the description of the geometric parameter gage device prototype for synchrotron radiation of HERA collider (DESY). The system construction which capable to measure photo current, caused by such a radiation in a refractory metal, described here. The system component parts are: measuring heads and photo current measuring electronics designed by IHEP, stepper motor by Vacuum Generators with HEDS-550X encoder by Hewlett Packard, PCI-STEP-4CX 4-Axis Closed Loop Step controller by National Instruments. The device is controlled by means of Microsoft Visual Basic program using Value Motion Windows Libraries. The device prototype was tested in the beam of the DORIS storage ring.
