Single-particle strength toward N = 32: Spectroscopy of 51 Ca via the 50 Ca(d, p) reaction

States in the neutron-rich isotope 51 Ca were populated via the 50 Ca(d, p) transfer reaction in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of about 14 AMeV. The experiment was performed using a decelerated radioactive 50 Ca beam from the OEDO facility and the TiNA2 silicon array in combination with the SHARAQ magnetic spectrometer at RIBF/RIKEN. The energies of excited states in 51 Ca were reconstructed via missing mass spectroscopy, and angular distributions of protons were measured to extract differential cross sections. From a comparison with adiabatic distorted wave approximation (ADWA) calculations, spectroscopic factors were deduced for several states, including the ground state and excited states up to 4.2 MeV. These results are compared with shell-model calculations, as well as ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) predictions. The data support the assignment of the 1/2- and 5/2- single-particle states and provide evidence for a candidate 9/2+ state with a structure consistent with neutron excitation into the 0g9/2 orbital. These findings contribute new constraints on the single-particle structure and shell evolution in neutron-rich calcium isotopes.

Parity-transfer $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction as a selective probe of isovector $0^-$ states in nuclei

We demonstrate that the parity-transfer $({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction provides a selective probe of isovector $0^-$ excitations in nuclei. This reaction selectively populates unnatural-parity states through a $0^+ \to 0^-$ transition in the projectile. The excitation-energy spectrum of $^{12}\mathrm{B}$ was reconstructed via the ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{16}{\rm O},{}^{16}{\rm F}(0^-,{\rm g.s.}))$ reaction at 247~MeV/u from the coincident detection of the ${}^{15}\mathrm{O}+p$ decay products of ${}^{16}\mathrm{F}$. The known $0^{-}$ state at $E_x = 9.3~{\rm MeV}$ was clearly observed with an enhanced forward cross section, confirming the selectivity of the reaction. Structures observed at $E_x = 6.6 \pm 0.4$ and $14.8 \pm 0.3~{\rm MeV}$ exhibit forward-peaked angular distributions and are suggested to contain significant $0^-$ strength. These results demonstrate that the parity-transfer reaction provides a powerful probe of $0^-$ excitations and highlight its potential for systematic studies of spin-isospin modes, including pion-related dynamics, in nuclei.

How different is the core of $^{25}$F from $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$?

The neutron-shell structure of $^{25}$F was studied using quasi-free (p,2p) knockout reaction at 270A MeV in inverse kinematics. The sum of spectroscopic factors of $π$0d$_{5/2}$ orbital is found to be $1.0 \pm 0.3$. However, the spectroscopic factor for the ground-state to ground-state transition ($^{25}$F, $^{24}$O$_{g.s.}$) is only $0.36\pm 0.13$, and $^{24}$O excited states are produced from the 0d$_{5/2}$ proton knockout. The result shows that the $^{24}$O core of $^{25}$F nucleus significantly differs from a free $^{24}$O nucleus, and the core consists of 35% $^{24}$O$_{g.s}$. and 65% excited $^{24}$O.

Angular distributions of the vector Ay and tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz analyzing powers in the dd->3Hp reaction at 200 MeV

A complete set of analyzing powers for the dd->3Hp reaction at the kinetic beam energy of 200 MeV has been measured in the full angular range in the c.m. frame. The observed signs of the tensor analyzing powers Ayy, Axx, and Axz at forward and backward directions have clearly demonstrated the sensitivity to the ratio of the D- and S-wave components of the triton and deuteron, respectively. The new high-precision data are compared with the prediction of the relativistic multiple-scattering model by using standard wave functions of the three-nucleon bound state and of the deuteron.

Analyzing power in elastic scattering of 6He from polarized proton target at 71 MeV/nucleon

The vector analyzing power has been measured for the elastic scattering of neutron-rich 6He from polarized protons at 71 MeV/nucleon making use of a newly constructed solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field and at high temperature. Two approaches based on local one-body potentials were applied to investigate the spin-orbit interaction between a proton and a 6He nucleus. An optical model analysis revealed that the spin-orbit potential for 6He is characterized by a shallow and long-ranged shape compared with the global systematics of stable nuclei. A semimicroscopic analysis with a alpha+n+n cluster folding model suggests that the interaction between a proton and the alpha core is essentially important in describing the p+6He elastic scattering. The data are also compared with fully microscopic analyses using non-local optical potentials based on nucleon-nucleon g-matrices.

Three Nucleon Force Effects in Intermediate Energy Deuteron Analyzing Powers for dp Elastic Scattering

A complete high precision set of deuteron analyzing powers for elastic deuteron-proton ($dp$) scattering at 250 MeV/nucleon (MeV/N) has been measured. The new data are presented together with data from previous measurements at 70, 100, 135 and 200 MeV/N. They are compared with the results of three-nucleon (3N) Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials alone or combined with two models of three nucleon forces (3NFs): the Tucson-Melbourne 99 (TM99) and Urbana IX. At 250 MeV/N large discrepancies between pure NN models and data, which are not resolved by including 3NFs, were found at c.m.\ backward angles of $θ_{\rm c.m.}\gtrsim 120^\circ$ for almost all the deuteron analyzing powers. These discrepancies are quite similar to those found for the cross section at the same energy. We found small relativistic effects that cannot resolve the discrepancies with the data indicating that other, short-ranged 3NFs are required to obtain a proper description of the data.

Analyzing power for the proton elastic scattering from neutron-rich 6He nucleus

Vector analyzing power for the proton-6He elastic scattering at 71 MeV/nucleon has been measured for the first time, with a newly developed polarized proton solid target working at low magnetic field of 0.09 T. The results are found to be incompatible with a t-matrix folding model prediction. Comparisons of the data with g-matrix folding analyses clearly show that the vector analyzing power is sensitive to the nuclear structure model used in the reaction analysis. The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.

Spin-isospin selectivity in three-nucleon forces

Precision data are presented for the break-up reaction, $^2{\rm H}(\vec p,pp)n$, within the framework of nuclear-force studies. The experiment was carried out at KVI using a polarized-proton beam of 190 MeV impinging on a liquid-deuterium target and by exploiting the detector, BINA. Some of the vector-analyzing powers are presented and compared with state-of-the-art Faddeev calculations including three-nucleon forces effect. Significant discrepancies between the data and theoretical predictions were observed for kinematical configurations which correspond to the $^2{\rm H}(\vec p,^2$He$)n$ channel. These results are compared to the $^2{\rm H}(\vec p,d)p$ reaction to test the isospin sensitivity of the present three-nucleon force models. The current modeling of two and three-nucleon forces is not sufficient to describe consistently polarization data for both isospin states.

Analyzing powers Ayy, Axx, Axz and Ay in the dd->3Hen reaction at 270 MeV

The data on the tensor Ayy, Axx, Axz and vector Ay analyzing powers in the dd->3Hen obtained at Td= 270 MeV in the angular range 0 - 110 degrees in the c.m. are presented. The observed negative sign of the tensor analyzing powers Ayy, Axx and Axz at small angles clearly demonstrate the sensitivity to the ratio of the D and S wave component of the 3He wave function. However, the one-nucleon exchange calculations by using the standard 3He wave functions have failed to reproduce the strong variation of the tensor analyzing powers as a function of the angle in the c.m.

Charge Exchange Spin-Dipole Excitations of 90Zr and 208Pb and Neutron Matter Equation of State

Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of $^{90}$Zr and $^{208}$Pb are studied by using a Skyrme Hartree-Fock(HF) + Random Phase approximation (RPA). The calculated spin-dipole strength distributions are compared with experimental data obtained by $^{90}$Zr (p,n) $^{90}$Nb and $^{90}$Zr (n,p) $^{90}$ Nb reactions. The model-independent SD sum rule values of various Skyrme interactions are studied in comparison with the experimental values in order to determine the neutron skin thickness of $^{90}$Zr. The pressure of the neutron matter equation of state (EOS) and the nuclear matter symmetry energy are discussed in terms of the neutron skin thickness and peak energies of SD strength distributions.

Precision measurement of vector and tensor analyzing powers in elastic deuteron-proton scattering

High precision vector and tensor analyzing powers of elastic deuteron-proton d+p scattering have been measured at intermediate energies to investigate effects of three-nucleon forces (3NF). Angular distribution in the range of 70-120 degree in the center-of mass frame for incident-deuteron energies of 130 and 180 MeV were obtained using the RIKEN facility. The beam polarization was unambiguously determined by measuring the 12C(d,alpha)10B(2+) reaction at 0 degree. Results of the measurements are compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon calculations. The present modeling of nucleon-nucleon forces and its extension to the three-nucleon system is not sufficient to describe the high precision data consistently and requires, therefore, further investigation.

Neutron Skin Thickness of 90Zr Determined By Charge Exchange Reactions

Charge exchange spin-dipole (SD) excitations of 90Zr are studied by the 90Zr(p,n) and 90Zr(n,p) reactions at 300 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique is employed to obtain the SD strength distributions in the cross section spectra. For the first time, a model-independent SD sum rule value is obtained: 148+/-12 fm^2. The neutron skin thickness of 90Zr is determined to be 0.07+/-0.04 fm from the SD sum rule value.

Resolving the Discrepancy of 135 MeV pd Elastic Scattering Cross Sections and Relativistic Effects

Three precise measurements for elastic pd scattering at 135 MeV/A have been performed with the three different experimental setups. The cross sections are described well by the theoretical predictions based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces combined with three nucleon forces. Relativistic Faddeev calculations show that relativistic effects are restricted to backward angles. This result supports the two measurements recently reported by RIKEN and contradicts the KVI data.

Determination of the Gamow-Teller Quenching Factor from Charge Exchange Reactions on 90Zr

Double differential cross sections between 0-12 degrees were measured for the 90Zr(n,p) reaction at 293 MeV over a wide excitation energy range of 0-70 MeV. A multipole decomposition technique was applied to the present data as well as the previously obtained 90Zr(p,n) data to extract the Gamow-Teller (GT) component from the continuum. The GT quenching factor Q was derived by using the obtained total GT strengths. The result is Q=0.88+/-0.06 not including an overall normalization uncertainty in the GT unit cross section of 16%.

Performance of the neutron polarimeter NPOL3 for high resolution measurements

We describe the neutron polarimeter NPOL3 for the measurement of polarization transfer observables $D_{ij}$ with a typical high resolution of $\sim$300 keV at $T_n$ $\simeq$ 200 MeV. The NPOL3 system consists of three planes of neutron detectors. The first two planes for neutron polarization analysis are made of 20 sets of one-dimensional position-sensitive plastic scintillation counters with a size of 100 cm $\times$ 10 cm $\times$ 5 cm, and they cover the area of 100 $\times$ 100 $\mathrm{cm}^2$. The last plane for detecting doubly scattered neutrons or recoiled protons is made of the two-dimensional position-sensitive liquid scintillation counter with a size of 100 cm $\times$ 100 cm $\times$ 10 cm. The effective analyzing powers $A_{y;\mathrm{eff}}$ and double scattering efficiencies $ε_{\mathrm{D.S.}}$ were measured by using the three kinds of polarized neutrons from the ${}^{2}{\rm H}(\vec{p},\vec{n})pp$, ${}^{6}{\rm Li}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{6}{\rm Be}(\mathrm{g.s.})$, and ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\vec{p},\vec{n}){}^{12}{\rm N}(\mathrm{g.s.})$ reactions at $T_p$ = 198 MeV. The performance of NPOL3 defined as $ε_{\mathrm{D.S.}}(A_{y;\mathrm{eff}})^2$ are similar to that of the Indiana Neutron POLarimeter (INPOL) by taking into account for the counter configuration difference between these two neutron polarimeters.

Measurement of the tensor analyzing power T20 in the dd->^3Hen and dd->^3Hp at intermediate energies and at zero degree

The data on the tensor analyzing power T20 in the dd->^3Hen and dd-> ^3Hp reactions at 140, 200 and 270 MeV of the deuteron kinetic energy and at zero degree obtained at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility are presented. The observed positive sign of T20 clearly demonstrates the sensitivity to the D/S wave ratios in the ^3He and ^3H in the energy domain of the measurements. The T20 data for the ^3He-n and ^3H-p channels are in agreement within experimental accuracy.

Polarization Transfer Measurement for $^1H(\vec{d},\vec{p})^2 H$ Elastic Scattering at 135 MeV/u and Three Nucleon Force Effects

The deuteron to proton polarization transfer coefficients for the $d$--$p$ elastic scattering were precisely measured with an incoming deuteron energy of 135 MeV/u at the RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The data are compared to theoretical predictions based on exact solutions of three-nucleon Faddeev equations with high--precision nucleon--nucleon forces combined with different three-nucleon forces (3NFs), representing the current, most popular models: the $2π$-exchange Tucson-Melbourne model, a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry TM'(99), and the Urbana IX 3NF. Theory predicts large 3NF effects, especially in the angular range around the cross section minimum, but the present data only partially concurs, predominantly for $K_{xx}^{y'}-K_{yy}^{y'}$ ($K_{xx}^{y'}$, $K_{yy}^{y'}$). For the induced polarization, $P^{y'}$, the TM$'$(99) and Urbana IX 3NFs reproduce the data, but the Tucson-Melbourne 3NF fails to describe the data. For the polarization transfer coefficients, $K_{y}^{y'}$ and $K_{xz}^{y'}$, the predicted 3NF ffects are in drastic conflict to the data. These facts clearly reveal the defects of the 3NF models currently used.

Three-body dN interaction in the analysis of the 12C(pol_d,d') reaction at 270 MeV

We have measured the cross sections and analyzing powers Ay and Ayy for the elastic and inelastic scattering of deuterons from the 0+(g.s.), 2+(4.44 MeV), 3-(9.64 MeV), 1+(12.71 MeV), and 2-(18.3 MeV) states in 12C at an incident energy of 270 MeV. The data are compared with microscopic distorted-wave impulse approximation calculations where the projectile-nucleon effective interactionis taken from the three-nucleon t-matrix given by rigorous Faddeev calculations presently available at intermediate energies. The agreement between theory and data compares well with that for the (p,p') reactions at comparable incident energies/nucleon.
