Direct relation between the low-energy spin excitations and superconductivity of overdoped high-$T_c$ superconductors

The dynamic spin susceptibility, $χ''(ω)$, has been measured over the energy range of $2 \leq ω\leq 10$ meV for overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. Incommensurate (IC) spin excitations are observed at 8 K for all superconducting samples for $0.25 \leq x \leq 0.28$ with $χ''$ peaking at $\sim 6$ meV. The IC peaks at 6 meV become smaller in intensity with increasing $x$ and, finally, become unobservable for a sample with $x=0.30$ which has no bulk superconductivity. The maximum $χ''$ decreases linearly with $T_c$(onset) in the overdoped region, implying a direct cooperative relation between the spin fluctuations and the superconductivity.

Revised crystal structure model of Li2NH by neutron powder diffraction

We performed neutron powder diffraction experiments on lithium imide Li2NH, and have proposed a revised crystal structure model. Li2NH has a face-centered cubic structure with a partially occupied hydrogen site. Of the possible crystal structure models that represent the obtained data, the model with F-43m symmetry having hydrogen atoms at the 16e site, in which only one hydrogen atom randomly occupies one of the four hydrogen positions around a nitrogen atom, is most probable. For this model, the distance between the nearest nitrogen and hydrogen atoms is 0.82(6)A, and the angle between H-N-H is 109.5deg., which are close to those of the lithium amide LiNH2, indicating that the structural circumstances around nitrogen and hydrogen are similar in Li2NH and LiNH2.

Quantum Magnetic Excitations from Stripes in Copper-Oxide Superconductors

In the copper-oxide parent compounds of the high-transition-temperature superconductors, the valence electrons are localized, one per copper site, due to strong intraatomic Coulomb repulsion. A symptom of the localization is antiferromagnetism, where the spins of localized electrons alternate between up and down. The superconductivity appears when mobile 'holes' are doped into this insulating state, and it coexists with antiferromagnetic fluctuations. In one approach to the coexistence, the holes are believed to self-organize into 'stripes' that alternate with antiferromagnetic (insulating) regions within copper-oxide planes. Such an unusual electronic state would necessitate an unconventional mechanism of superconductivity. There is an apparent problem with this picture, however: measurements of magnetic excitations in superconducting YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) near optimum doping are incompatible with the naive expectations for a material with stripes. Here we report neutron scattering measurements on stripe-ordered La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4). We show that the measured excitations are, surprisingly, quite similar to those in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) (i.e., the predicted spectrum of magnetic excitations is wrong). We find instead that the observed spectrum can be understood within a stripe model by taking account of quantum excitations. Our results support the concept that stripe correlations are essential to high-transition-temperature superconductivity.

Stripe order, depinning, and fluctuations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ and La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.075}$Sr$_{0.050}$CuO$_{4}$

We present a neutron scattering study of stripe correlations measured on a single crystal of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$. Within the low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase, superlattice peaks indicative of spin and charge stripe order are observed below 50 K. For excitation energies $\hbarω\le12$ meV, we have characterized the magnetic excitations that emerge from the incommensurate magnetic superlattice peaks. In the ordered state, these excitations are similar to spin waves. Following these excitations as a function of temperature, we find that there is relatively little change in the {\bf Q}-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility for $\hbarω\sim10$ meV as stripe order disappears and then as the structure transforms from LTT to the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase. The {\bf Q}-integrated signal at lower energies changes more dramatically through these transitions, as it must in a transformation from an ordered to a disordered state. We argue that the continuous evolution through the transitions provides direct evidence that the incommensurate spin excitations in the disordered state are an indicator of dynamical charge stripes. An interesting feature of the thermal evolution is a variation in the incommensurability of the magnetic scattering. Similar behavior is observed in measurements on a single crystal of La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.075}$Sr$_{0.050}$CuO$_{4}$; maps of the scattered intensity in a region centered on the antiferromagnetic wave vector and measured at $\hbarω=4$ meV are well reproduced by a model of disordered stripes with a temperature-dependent mixture of stripe spacings. We discuss the relevance of our results to understanding the magnetic excitations in cuprate superconductors.

Molecular states observed in a single pair of strongly coupled self-assembled InAs quantum dots

Molecular states in a SINGLE PAIR of strongly coupled self-assembled InAs quantum dots are investigated using a sub-micron sized single electron transistor containing just a few pairs of coupled InAs dots embedded in a GaAs matrix. We observe a series of well-formed Coulomb diamonds with charging energy of less than 5 meV, which are much smaller than those reported previously. This is because electrons are occupied in molecular states, which are spread over both dots and occupy a large volume. In the measurement of ground and excited state single electron transport spectra with magnetic field, we find that the electrons are sequentially trapped in symmetric and anti-symmetric states. This result is well-explained by numerical calculation using an exact diagonalization method.

Characterization of low-energy magnetic excitations in chromium

The low-energy excitations of Cr, i.e. the Fincher-Burke (FB) modes, have been investigated in the transversely polarized spin-density-wave phase by inelastic neutron scattering using a single-(Q+-) crystal with a propagation vector (Q+-) parallel to [0,0,1]. The constant-momentum-transfer scans show that the energy spectra consist of two components, namely dispersive FB modes and an almost energy-independent cross section. Most remarkably, we find that the spectrum of the FB modes exhibits one peak at 140 K near Q = (0,0,0.98) and two peaks near Q = (0,0,1.02), respectively. This is surprising because Cr crystallizes in a centro-symmetric bcc structure. The asymmetry of those energy spectra decreases with increasing temperature. In addition, the observed magnetic peak intensity is independent of Q suggesting a transfer of spectral-weight between the upper and lower FB modes. The energy-independent cross section is localized only between the incommensurate peaks and develops rapidly with increasing temperature.

Magnetic Field Effect on Static Antiferromagnetism in Electron-Doped Superconductor Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x$=0.11 and 0.15)

Effects of magnetic fields (applied along the c-axis) on static spin correlation were studied for the electron-doped superconductors Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with $x$=0.11 ($T_c$=26 K) and $x$=0.15 ($T_c$=16 K) by neutron scattering measurements. In the $x$=0.11 sample located near the antiferromagnetic(AF) and superconducting phase boundary, the field dependence of both the magnetic intensity at T=3 K and the onset temperature of the magnetic order exhibits a peak at $\sim$5 T. In contrast, in the overdoped $x$=0.15 sample a static AF order is neither observed at zero-field nor induced by the field up to 8.5 T. Difference and similarity of the field effect between the hole- and electron-doped high-$T_c$ cuprates are discussed.

Evidence for an incommensurate magnetic resonance in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

We study the effect of a magnetic field (applied along the c-axis) on the low-energy, incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in superconducting La(1.82)Sr(0.18)CuO(4). The incommensurate peaks at 9 meV, which in zero-field were previously shown to sharpen in q on cooling below T_c [T. E. Mason et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 1604 (1996)], are found to broaden in q when a field of 10 T is applied. The applied field also causes scattered intensity to shift into the spin gap. We point out that the response at 9 meV, though occurring at incommensurate wave vectors, is comparable to the commensurate magnetic resonance observed at higher energies in other cuprate superconductors.

Spin excitations in stripe-ordered La2-xSrxNiO4 (x=0.275 and 1/3)

We report neutron scattering measurements of the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the stripe-ordered phase of La2-xSrxNiO4 (x=0.275 and 1/3). The propagating spin excitations follow a similar dispersion relation for the two compositions, but the line widths are broader for x=0.275 than for x=1/3.

Fermi-liquid ground state in n-type copper-oxide superconductor Pr0.91Ce0.09LaCuO4-y

We report nuclear magnetic resonance studies on the low-doped n-type copper-oxide Pr_{0.91}LaCe_{0.09}CuO_{4-y} (T_c=24 K) in the superconducting state and in the normal state uncovered by the application of a strong magnetic field. We find that when the superconductivity is removed, the underlying ground state is the Fermi liquid state. This result is at variance with that inferred from previous thermal conductivity measurement and contrast with that in p-type copper-oxides with a similar doping level where high-T_c superconductivity sets in within the pseudogap phase. The data in the superconducting state are consistent with the line-nodes gap model.

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of a charge stripe order in 1/8-doped La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

Lattice distortions associated with charge stripe order in 1/8 hole-doped La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ are studied using synchrotron X-ray diffraction for $x=0.05$ and $x=0.075$. The propagation wave vector and charge order correlation lengths are determined with a high accuracy, revealing that the oblique charge stripes in orthorhombic $x=0.075$ crystal are more disordered than the aligned stripes in tetragonal $x=0.05$ crystal. The twofold periodicity of lattice modulations along the c-axis is explained by long-range Coulomb interactions between holes on neighboring CuO$_{2}$ planes.

Spin Pseudo Gap in La2-xSrxCuO4 Studied by Neutron Scattering

Spin excitations of La2-xSrxCuO have been studied using inelastic neutron scattering techniques in the energy range of 2 meV =< w =< 12 meV and the temperature range of 8 K =< T =< 150 K. We observed a signature of a spin pseudo gap in the excitation spectrum above Tc for the slightly overdoped sample with x = 0.18. On heating, the spin pseudo gap gradually collapses between T = 80 K and 150 K. For the x = 0.15 and 0.20, although the visibility of gap-like structure at T ~ Tc is lower compared to the x = 0.18 sample, the broad bump of kai"(w) appears at w ~ 5 meV,close to the spin-gap energy at base temperature, suggests the existence of the spin pseudo gap in the normal state.

Structural effect on the static spin and charge correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

We report the results of elastic neutron scattering measurements performed on 1/8-hole doped La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ single crystals with {\it x}=0.05, 0.06, 0.075 and 0.085. In the low-temperature less-orthorhombic (LTLO, {\it Pccn} symmetry) phase, the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave (SDW) wavevectors were found to tilt in a low-symmetric direction with one-dimensional anisotropy in the CuO$_{2}$ plane, while they were aligned along the high-symmetry axis in the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT, {\it P}4$_2$/{\it ncm} symmetry) phase. The coincident direction of two wavevectors suggests a close relation between CDW and SDW orders. The SDW wavevector systematically deviates from the Cu-O bond direction in the LTLO phase upon Sr substitution and the tilt angle in the LTLO phase is smaller than that in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase (LTO, {\it B}{\it mab} symmetry) with comparable in-plane orthorhombic distortion. These results demonstrate a correlation between the corrugated pattern of CuO$_{2}$ plane and the deviations.

Magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of electron-doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$

We have investigated the magnetism and the superconductivity of an electron-doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) using single crystal and powder samples by means of zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Muon spin rotation corresponding to antiferromagnetic (AF) order was observed in the sample with 0.04$\leq${\it x}$\leq$0.11. Changes in magnetic properties of Cu spins upon Ce doping were revealed because the effect of the rare earth moment was negligible. Bulk superconductivity was identified in a wide Ce concentration range of 0.09$\leq${\it x}$\leq$0.20 with a maximum transition temperature of 26 K. At low temperatures, the superconducting (SC) phase abruptly appears by doping with linking quick destroy of the AF ordered phase at {\it x}$\sim$0.09, indicating the competitive relation between two phases.

Commensurate spin dynamics in the superconducting state of an electron-doped cuprate superconductor

We report neutron scattering studies on single crystals of the electron-doped (n-type) superconducting cuprate Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) with Tc = 18 K and 25 K. Unlike the hole-doped (p-type) superconducting cuprates where incommensurate magnetic fluctuations commonly exist, the n-type cuprate shows commensurate magnetic fluctuations at the tetragonal (1/2 1/2 0) reciprocal points both in the superconducting and in the normal state. A spin gap opens up when the n-type cuprate becomes superconducting, as in the optimally doped p-type La2-xSrxCuO4. The gap energy, however, increases gradually up to about 4 meV as T decreases from Tc to 2 K, which contrasts with the spin pseudogap behavior with a T-independent gap energy in the superconducting state of p-type cuprates.

Absence of magnetic field effect on static magnetic order in electron-doped superconductor Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_4

Neutron-scattering experiments were performed to study the magnetic field effect on the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Nd_{1.86}Ce_{0.14}CuO_4, which shows the coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. The (1/2 3/2 0) magnetic Bragg intensity, which mainly originates from the order of both the Cu and Nd moments at low temperatures, shows no magnetic field dependence when the field is applied perpendicular to the CuO_{2} plane up to 10 T above the upper critical field. This result is significantly different from that reported for the hole-doped cuprate superconductors, in which the quasi-static magnetic order is noticeably enhanced under a magnetic field.

Magnetic field effects and magnetic anisotropy in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The effects of the application of a magnetic field on the diagonal stripe spin-glass phase is studied in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.014 and 0.024). With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic elastic intensity at the diagonal incommensurate (DIC) positions (1,\pmε,0) decreases as opposed to the increase seen in superconducting samples. This diminution in intensity with increasing magnetic field originates from a spin reorientation transition, which is driven by the antisymmetric exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the transition temperature, the incommensurability, and the peak width of the diagonal incommensurate correlations are not changed with magnetic field. This result suggests that the magnetic correlations are determined primarily by the charge disproportionation and that the geometry of the diagonal incommensurate magnetism is also determined by effects, that is, stripe formation which are not purely magnetic in origin. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange is nevertheless important in determining the local spin structure in the DIC stripe phase.
