Do intergalactic magnetic fields imply an open universe?

The detection of magnetic fields at high redshifts, and in empty intergalactic space, support the idea that cosmic magnetism has a primordial origin. Assuming that Maxwellian electromagnetism and general relativity hold, and without introducing any `new' physics, we show how the observed magnetic fields can easily survive cosmological evolution from the inflationary era in a marginally open Friedmann universe but fail to do so, by a very wide margin, in a flat or a marginally closed universe. Magnetic fields evolve very differently in open and closed Friedmann models. The existence of significant magnetic fields in the universe today, that require primordial seeding, may therefore provide strong evidence that the universe is marginally open rather than marginally closed.

Origin of cosmic magnetic fields: Superadiabatically amplified modes in open Friedmann universes

Cosmological magnetic fields in open Friedmann universes can experience superadiabatic amplification within the realm of conventional electromagnetism. This is possible mathematically, despite the conformal invariance of Maxwell's equations, because Friedmann spacetimes with non-Euclidean spatial geometry are not globally conformal to Minkowski space. Physically, this means that even universes that are marginally open today can sustain large-scale magnetic fields that are substantially stronger than previously anticipated. In the present article, we investigate this purely geometric amplification mechanism in greater detail, focusing on the early evolution of the electromagnetic modes in inflationary Friedmann models with hyperbolic spatial geometry. This also allows us to refine the earlier numerical estimates and provide the current spectrum of the residual, superadiabatically amplified magnetic field.

Meeting time distributions in Bernoulli systems

Meeting time is defined as the time for which two orbits approach each other within distance $ε$ in phase space. We show that the distribution of the meeting time is exponential in $(p_1,...,p_k)$-Bernoulli systems. In the limit of $ε\to0$, the distribution converges to exp(-ατ), where $τ$ is the meeting time normalized by the average. The exponent is shown to be $α=\sum_{l=1}^{k}p_l(1-p_l)$ for the Bernoulli systems.

Non-thermal hot electrons ultrafastly generating hot optical phonons in graphite

Ultrafast dynamics of graphite is investigated by time-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe spectral features of direct photoexcitations, non-thermal electron distributions, and recovery dynamics occurring with two time scales having distinct pump-power dependences. Additionally, we find an anomalous increase of the spectral intensity around the Fermi level, and we attribute this to spectral broadenings due to coupled optical phonons in the transient. The fingerprints of the coupled optical phonons occur from the temporal region where the electronic temperature is still not definable. This implies that there is a mechanism of ultrafast-and-efficient phonon generations beyond a two-temperature model.

Laser interferometry with translucent and absorbing mechanical oscillators

The sensitivity of laser interferometers can be pushed into regimes that enable the direct observation of quantum behaviour of mechanical oscillators. In the past, membranes with subwavelength thickness (thin films) have been proposed as high-mechanical-quality, low-thermal-noise oscillators. Thin films from a homogenous material, however, generally show considerable light transmission accompanied by heating due to light absorption, which typically reduces the mechanical quality and limits quantum opto-mechanical experiments in particular at low temperatures. In this work, we experimentally analyze a Michelson-Sagnac interferometer including a translucent silicon nitride (SiN) membrane with subwavelength thickness. We find that such an interferometer provides an operational point being optimally suited for quantum opto-mechanical experiments with translucent oscillators. In case of a balanced beam splitter of the interferometer, the membrane can be placed at a node of the electro-magnetic field, which simultaneously provides lowest absorption and optimum laser noise rejection at the signal port. We compare the optical and mechanical model of our interferometer with experimental data and confirm that the SiN membrane can be coupled to a laser power of the order of one Watt at 1064 nm without significantly degrading the membrane's quality factor of the order 10^6, at room temperature.

Design and performance of the muon monitor for the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment

This article describes the design and performance of the muon monitor for the T2K (Tokaito-Kamioka) long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. The muon monitor consists of two types of detector arrays: ionization chambers and silicon PIN photodiodes. It measures the intensity and profile of muons produced, along with neutrinos, in the decay of pions. The measurement is sensitive to the intensity and direction of the neutrino beam. The linearity and stability of the detectors were measured in beam tests to be within 2.4% and 1.5%, respectively. Based on the test results, the precision of the beam direction measured by the muon monitor is expected to be 0.25 mrad.

On the Independent Crossing Approximation in Three Flavor Neutrino Oscillations

In dense matter like the Supernovae and at high energy, neutrinos have two points where the nonadiabatic transitions could occur. With the present values of the oscillation parameters in the standard three flavor scenario, two nonadiabatic transitions can be regarded as independent, i.e., two can be treated by the two flavor formalism separately. However, in the presence of new physics, it is not clear in general whether such independence holds. We examine this question by assuming hypothetical range of the neutrino energy and by varying the mixing angles and the mass squared differences in the standard case. We found the cases where Independent Crossing Approximation breaks down for some unrealistic range of the mass squared difference and the mixing angle. We also discuss the criterion which gives such independence.

Epitaxial Growth of a Full-Heusler Alloy Co$_{2}$FeSi on Silicon by Low-Temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy

For electrical spin injection and detection of spin-polarized electrons in silicon, we explore highly epitaxial growth of ferromagnetic full-Heusler-alloy Co2FeSi thin films on silicon substrates using low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (LTMBE). Although in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction images clearly show two-dimensional epitaxial growth for growth temperatures T_G of 60, 130, and 200 C, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy experiments reveal that there are single-crystal phases other than Heusler alloys near the interface between Co_2FeSi and Si for T_G = 130 and 200 C. On the other hand, almost perfect heterointerfaces are achieved for T_G = 60 C. These results and magnetic measurements indicate that highly epitaxial growth of Co_2FeSi thin films on Si is demonstrated only for T_G = 60 C.

Ferromagnetism and Electronic Structures of Nonstoichiometric Heusler-Alloy Fe_3-xMn_xSi Epilayers Grown on Ge(111)

For the study of ferromagnetic materials which are compatible with group-IV semiconductor spintronics, we demonstrate control of the ferromagnetic properties of Heusler-alloys Fe_3-xMn_xSi epitaxially grown on Ge(111) by tuning the Mn composition x. Interestingly, we obtain L2_1-ordered structures even for nonstoichiometric atomic compositions. The Curie temperature of the epilayers with x ~ 0.6 exceeds 300 K. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electronic structures of the nonstoichiometric Fe_3-xMn_xSi alloys become half-metallic for 0.75 < x < 1.5. We discuss the possibility of room-temperature ferromagnetic Fe_3-xMn_xSi/Ge epilayers with high spin polarization.

Study of the internal mechanisms of Pixelized Photon Detectors operated in Geiger-mode

In the 1990s, a novel semiconductor photon-sensor operated in Geiger-mode was invented in Russia (Silicon PhotoMultiplier), which consists of many tiny pixels and has a single photon level sensitivity. Since then, various types of the sensor with this scheme, Pixelized Photon Detectors (PPD), have been developed in many places in the world. For instance, Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. in Japan produces the PPD as a Multi-Pixel Photon Counter. While the internal mechanisms of the PPD have been intensively studied in recent years, the existing models do not succeeded to fully reproduce the output characteristic, such as waveforms at low temperature. We have developed a new model with the transient multiplication and quenching of the realistic avalanche process and have succeeded in reproducing the output waveform of the PPD at various temperature. In this paper, we discuss our improved model.

Photoemission evidence for a Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transition in VO$_2$

The temperature ($T$) dependent metal-insulator transition (MIT) in VO$_2$ is investigated using bulk sensitive hard x-ray ($\sim$ 8 keV) valence band, core level, and V 2$p-3d$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES). The valence band and core level spectra are compared with full-multiplet cluster model calculations including a coherent screening channel. Across the MIT, V 3$d$ spectral weight transfer from the coherent ($d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ final) states at Fermi level to the incoherent ($d^{0}+d^1\underbar{\it {L}}$ final) states, corresponding to the lower Hubbard band, lead to gap-formation. The spectral shape changes in V 1$s$ and V 2$p$ core levels as well as the valence band are nicely reproduced from a cluster model calculations, providing electronic structure parameters. Resonant-PES finds that the $d^1\underbar{\it{L}}$ states resonate across the V 2$p-3d$ threshold in addition to the $d^{0}$ and $d^1\underbar{\it {C}}$ states. The results support a Mott-Hubbard transition picture for the first order MIT in VO$_2$.

Measuring energy dependent polarization in soft gamma-rays using Compton scattering in PoGOLite

Linear polarization in X- and gamma-rays is an important diagnostic of many astrophysical sources, foremost giving information about their geometry, magnetic fields, and radiation mechanisms. However, very few X-ray polarization measurements have been made, and then only mono-energetic detections, whilst several objects are assumed to have energy dependent polarization signatures. In this paper we investigate whether detection of energy dependent polarization from cosmic sources is possible using the Compton technique, in particular with the proposed PoGOLite balloon-experiment, in the 25-100 keV range. We use Geant4 simulations of a PoGOLite model and input photon spectra based on Cygnus X-1 and accreting magnetic pulsars (100 mCrab). Effective observing times of 6 and 35 hours were simulated, corresponding to a standard and a long duration flight respectively. Both smooth and sharp energy variations of the polarization are investigated and compared to constant polarization signals using chi-square statistics. We can reject constant polarization, with energy, for the Cygnus X-1 spectrum (in the hard state), if the reflected component is assumed to be completely polarized, whereas the distinction cannot be made for weaker polarization. For the accreting pulsar, constant polarization can be rejected in the case of polarization in a narrow energy band with at least 50% polarization, and similarly for a negative step distribution from 30% to 0% polarization.

Hard X-ray Cu $2p$ Core-Level Photoemission of High-$T_c$ Cuprate Superconductors

We have performed a detailed study of Cu $2p$ core-level spectra in single layer La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$, La doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and bilayer Bi$_2$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) high-temperature superconductors by using hard x-ray photoemission (HX-PES). We identify the Cu$^{2+}$ derived (i) the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) feature, (ii) the $d^{n+1}\underline{L}$ (ligand screened) feature, (iii) the $d^{n}$ satellite feature, as well as the hole-doping derived high binding energy feature in the main peak. In Bi-based cuprates, intensities of the $d^{n}$ satellite features seem to be strongly enhanced compared to La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$. From x-ray photon energy dependent measurements, it is shown that the increased intensity in the satellite region is associated with Bi $4s$ core-level spectral intensity. The corrected $d^{n}$ satellite intensity is independent of the doping content or number of Cu-O layers. Our results suggest a correlation of the relative intensity of ZRS feature and hole-doping induced high binding energy spectral changes in the main peak with superconductivity.

Electronic structure of semiconducting CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$: Strong hybridization and relevance of single-impurity Anderson model

Semiconducting skutterudite CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$ is investigated by synchrotron x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Ce 3$d$ core-level PES and 3$d-4f$ XAS, in combination with single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) calculations, confirm features due to $f^0$, $f^1$ and $f^2$ configurations. The Ce 4$f$ density of states (DOS) indicates absence of a Kondo resonance at Fermi level, but can still be explained by SIAM with a small gap in non-$f$ DOS. While Ce 4$f$ partial DOS from band structure calculations are also consistent with the main Ce 4$f$ DOS, the importance of SIAM for core and valence spectra indicates Kondo semiconducting mixed valence for CeFe$_4$P$_{12}$, derived from strong hybridization between non-$f$ conduction and Ce 4$f$ DOS.

Dissipative tunneling in structures with quantum dots and quantum molecules

The problem of tunneling control in systems "quantum dot - quantum well" (as well as "quantum dot - quantum dot" or quantum molecule) and "quantum dot - bulk contact" is studied as a quantum tunneling with dissipation process in the semiclassical (instanton) approximation. For these systems temperature and correlation between a quantum dot radius and a quantum well width (or another quantum dot radius) are considered to be control parameters. The condition for a single electron blockade is found in the limit of quantum dot. The criteria for an extreme tunneling current in quantum molecules are also presented. The tunnel probability for systems under investigation is analytically obtained as well.

Temperature dependent Eu 3d-4f X-ray Absorption and Resonant Photoemission Study of the Valence Transition in $EuNi_2(Si_{0.2}Ge_{0.8})_2$

We study the mixed valence transition ($T$$_{v}$ $\sim$80 K) in EuNi$_{2}$(Si$_{0.2}$Ge$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$ using Eu 3$d-4f$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES). The Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ main peaks show a giant resonance and the spectral features match very well with atomic multiplet calculations. The spectra show dramatic temperature ($T$)-dependent changes over large energies ($\sim$10 eV) in RESPES and XAS. The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous mixed valence above and below $T$$_{v}$. The redistribution between Eu$^{2+}$$4f^7$+$[spd]^0$ and Eu$^{3+}$$4f^6$+$[spd]^1$ states is attributed to a hybridization change coupled to a Kondo-like volume collapse.

Evidence for suppressed metallicity on the surface of La2-xSrxCuO4 and Nd2-xCexCuO4

Hard X-ray Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) of copper core electronic states, with a probing depth of $\sim$60 Å, is used to show that the Zhang-Rice singlet feature is present in La$_2$CuO$_4$ but is absent in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. Hole- and electron doping in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (NCCO) result in new well-screened features which are missing in soft X-ray PES. Impurity Anderson model calculations establish metallic screening as its origin, which is strongly suppressed within 15 $\textÅ$ of the surface. Complemented with X-ray absorption spectroscopy, the small chemical-potential shift in core levels ($\sim0.2$ eV) are shown to be consistent with modifications of valence and conduction band states spanning the band gap ($\sim1$ eV) upon hole- and electron-doping in LSCO and NCCO.
