Search for neutron decay into an antineutrino and a neutral kaon in 0.401 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for bound neutron decay via $n\to\barν+K^0$ predicted by the Grand Unified Theories in 0.401 Mton$\cdot$years exposure of all pure water phases in the Super-Kamiokande detector. About 4.4 times more data than in the previous search have been analyzed by a new method including a spectrum fit to kaon invariant mass distributions. No significant data excess has been observed in the signal regions. As a result of this analysis, we set a lower limit of $7.8\times10^{32}$ years on the neutron lifetime at a 90% confidence level.

Spin-degenerate bulk bands and topological surface states associated with Dirac nodal lines in RuO2

Altermagnets are a novel platform to realize exotic electromagnetic properties distinct from those of conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. We report results of micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on RuO2, in which its altermagnetic nature has been under fierce debate in connection with crystal-orientation-dependent spintronic functionalities. By elucidating the band structure of the (100), (110) and (101) surfaces of a bulk single crystal using micro-ARPES, we found that, irrespective of the surface orientation, the experimental band structures show a good agreement with the bulk-band calculations for the nonmagnetic phase, but display a severe disagreement with those for the antiferromagnetic phase. Moreover, spin-resolved ARPES signifies a negligible spin polarization in the bulk bands, suggesting the absence of antiferromagnetism and altermagnetic spin splitting. In addition, we identified a nearly flat surface band and a dispersive one near the Fermi level at the (100)/(110) and (101) surfaces, respectively. Our first-principles calculations and analysis of Berry phase attribute these states to the topological surface bands emerging from the bulk Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi level. Our results indicate that such topological surface/interface states must be considered to understand the spintronic functionalities of RuO2, and may provide new insights into its catalytic characteristics.

Observation of Giant Band Splitting in Altermagnetic MnTe

We performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on hexagonal MnTe, a candidate for an altermagnet with a high critical temperature (TN=307 K). By utilizing photon-energy-tunable ARPES in combination with first-principles calculations, we found that the band structure in the antiferromagnetic phase exhibits a strongly anisotropic band-splitting associated with the time-reversal-symmetry breaking, providing the first direct experimental evidence for the altermagnetic band-splitting. The magnitude of the splitting reaches 0.8 eV at non-high-symmetry momentum points, which is much larger than the spin-orbit gap of ~0.3 eV along the GK high-symmetry cut. The present result paves the pathway toward realizing exotic physical properties associated with the altermagnetic spin-splitting.

Antiferromagnetic topological insulator with selectively gapped Dirac cones

Antiferromagnetic (AF) topological materials offer a fertile ground to explore a variety of quantum phenomena such as axion magnetoelectric dynamics and chiral Majorana fermions. To realize such intriguing states, it is essential to establish a direct link between electronic states and topology in the AF phase, whereas this has been challenging because of the lack of a suitable materials platform. Here we report the experimental realization of the AF topological-insulator phase in NdBi. By using micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we discovered contrasting surface electronic states for two types of AF domains; the surface having the out-of-plane component in the AF-ordering vector displays Dirac-cone states with a gigantic energy gap, whereas the surface parallel to the AF-ordering vector hosts gapless Dirac states despite the time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The present results establish an essential role of combined symmetry to protect massless Dirac fermions under the presence of AF order and widen opportunities to realize exotic phenomena utilizing AF topological materials.

Unusual band evolution and persistence of topological surface states in high-T_C magnetic topological insulator

Understanding the mechanism of ferromagnetism in ferromagnetic topological insulators (TIs) is a key to realize exotic time-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum phases. However, electronic states relevant to the ferromagnetism are highly controversial. Here we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on (CrxSb1-x)2Te3 thin films, high-Curie-temperature (T_C) ferromagnetic TIs, spanning the non-doped (T_C=0 K) to highly-doped (T_C=192 K) region. We found that, upon Cr doping to Sb2Te3, the bulk valence-band valley exhibits filling-in behavior while retaining band inversion, leading to the formation of a nearly-flat band in high-T_C regime and evolution from a six-petal flower to a Star-of-David Fermi surface. Despite the weakening of spin-orbit coupling with Cr doping, the Dirac-cone state persists up to the highest-T_C sample, and shows a clear magnetic-gap opening below TC accompanied with an unexpected band shift, signifying its strong coupling with spontaneous ferromagnetism. The present result lays the foundation for understanding the interplay between band topology and ferromagnetism in TIs.

Rhombic Fermi surfaces in a ferromagnetic MnGa thin film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$ (MnGa) with the $L1_0$ structure is a ferromagnetic material with strong perpendicular magneto-crystalline anisotropy. Although MnGa thin films have been successfully grown epitaxially and studied for various spintronics devices, fundamental understandings of its electronic structure are still lacking. To address this issue, we have investigated $L1_0$-MnGa thin films using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We have observed a large Fermi surface with a rhombic shape in the $k_x$-$k_y$ plane overlapping neighboring Fermi surfaces. The $k_z$ dependence of the band structure suggests that the band dispersion observed by ARPES comes from the three-dimensional band structure of MnGa folded by a $\sqrt{2} \times \sqrt{2}$ reconstruction. The band dispersion across the corner of the rhombic Fermi surface forms an electron pocket with a weak $k_z$ dependence. The effective mass and the mobility of the bands crossing the Fermi level near the corner are estimated from the ARPES images. Based on the experimental findings, the relationship between the observed band structure and the spin-dependent properties in MnGa-based heterostructures is discussed.

$^{181}$Ta Nuclear quadrupole resonance study of non-centrosymmetric superconductor PbTaSe$_2$

We report on a pure $^{181}$Ta-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurement of PbTaSe$_2$ at zero magnetic field, which has the advantage of directly probing the intrinsic superconducting phase and electronic states of the TaSe$_2$ layer. We observed the $^{181}$Ta-NQR spectrum of the intrinsic structure with space group $P6$-$m2$, which agrees well with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The nuclear spin relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) shows an exponential decrease well below $T_{\rm_c}$, indicating that the superconducting state is fully gapped in the framework of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. The gap size obtained by $^{181}$Ta-NQR was smaller than the value in previous reports, which may imply that the Fermi surfaces composed of Ta-5$d$ orbitals, where the average pairing interactions are expected to be weaker than in BCS model, are primarily probed. The temperature dependence of $1/T_1$ below $T_{\rm_c}$ can be reproduced well by the superposition of quadrupole and magnetic relaxation mechanisms, together with the distribution of superconducting gap size inherent to multiple Fermi surfaces theoretically proposed in PbTaSe$_2$.

Conversion of a conventional superconductor into a topological superconductor by topological proximity effect

Realization of topological superconductors (TSCs) hosting Majorana fermions is a central challenge in condensed-matter physics. One approach is to use the superconducting proximity effect (SPE) in heterostructures, where a topological insulator contacted with a superconductor hosts an effective p-wave pairing by the penetration of Cooper pairs across the interface. However, this approach suffers a difficulty in accessing the topological interface buried deep beneath the surface. Here, we propose an alternative approach to realize topological superconductivity without SPE. In a Pb(111) thin film grown on TlBiSe2, we discover that the Dirac-cone state of substrate TlBiSe2 migrates to the top surface of Pb film and obtains an energy gap below the superconducting transition temperature of Pb. This suggests that a BCS superconductor is converted into a TSC by the topological proximity effect. Our discovery opens a route to manipulate topological superconducting properties of materials.

Ferroelectric atomic displacement in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$

We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. The atomic displacements in the polar crystal structures are also analyzed in terms of the ferroelectric modes. In the ferroelectric phase, the atomic displacements are decomposed into dominant positive Slater, negative Last, and small positive Axe modes. The suppression of Slater and Last modes, the sign change of Last mode, and the enlargement of Axe mode are found in the multiferroic phase. The ferroelectric distortion is well reproduced by a first-principles calculation based on Berry phase method, providing an additional information on competing mechanisms to induce the polarization, electronic $p$-$d$ hybridization vs. magnetic exchange-striction.

Dimensionality reduction and band quantization induced by potassium intercalation in 1$T$-HfTe$_2$

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on transition-metal dichalcogenide 1$T$-HfTe$_2$ to elucidate the evolution of electronic states upon potassium (K) deposition. In pristine HfTe$_2$, an in-plane hole pocket and electron pockets are observed at the Brillouin-zone center and corner, respectively, indicating the semimetallic nature of bulk HfTe$_2$, with dispersion perpendicular to the plane. In contrast, the band structure of heavily K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is obviously different from that of bulk, and resembles the band structure calculated for monolayer HfTe$_2$. It was also observed that lightly K-dosed HfTe$_2$ is characterized by quantized bands originating from bilayer and trilayer HfTe$_2$, indicative of staging. The results suggest that the dimensionality-crossover from 3D (dimensional) to 2D electronic states due to systematic K intercalation takes place via staging in a single sample. The study provides a new strategy for controlling the dimensionality and functionality of novel quantum materials.

Influence of Earth-Directed Coronal Mass Ejections on the Sun's Shadow Observed by the Tibet-III Air Shower Array

We examine the possible influence of Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (ECMEs) on the Sun's shadow in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity observed by the Tibet-III air shower (AS) array. We confirm a clear solar-cycle variation of the intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow during ten years between 2000 and 2009. This solar-cycle variation is overall reproduced by our Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of the Sun's shadow based on the potential field model of the solar magnetic field averaged over each solar rotation period. We find, however, that the magnitude of the observed intensity deficit in the Sun's shadow is significantly less than that predicted by MC simulations, particularly during the period around solar maximum when a significant number of ECMEs is recorded. The $χ^2$ tests of the agreement between the observations and the MC simulations show that the difference is larger during the periods when the ECMEs occur, and the difference is reduced if the periods of ECMEs are excluded from the analysis. This suggests the first experimental evidence of the ECMEs affecting the Sun's shadow observed in the 3~TeV cosmic-ray intensity.

$A$-cation control of magnetoelectric quadrupole order in $A$(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ ($A$ = Ba, Sr, and Pb)

Ferroic magnetic quadrupole order exhibiting macroscopic magnetoelectric activity is discovered in the novel compound $A$(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ with $A$ = Pb, which is in contrast with antiferroic quadrupole order observed in the isostructural compounds with $A$ = Ba and Sr. Unlike the famous lone-pair stereochemical activity which often triggers ferroelectricity as in PbTiO$_3$, the Pb$^{2+}$ cation in Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ is stereochemically inactive but dramatically alters specific magnetic interactions and consequently switches the quadrupole order from antiferroic to ferroic. Our first-principles calculations uncover a positive correlation between the degree of $A$-O bond covalency and a stability of the ferroic quadrupole order.

Evaluation of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field Strength Using the Cosmic-Ray Shadow of the Sun

We analyze the Sun's shadow observed with the Tibet-III air shower array and find that the shadow's center deviates northward (southward) from the optical solar disc center in the "Away" ("Toward") IMF sector. By comparing with numerical simulations based on the solar magnetic field model, we find that the average IMF strength in the "Away" ("Toward") sector is $1.54 \pm 0.21_{\rm stat} \pm 0.20_{\rm syst}$ ($1.62 \pm 0.15_{\rm stat} \pm 0.22_{\rm syst}$) times larger than the model prediction. These demonstrate that the observed Sun's shadow is a useful tool for the quantitative evaluation of the average solar magnetic field.

Band splitting and Weyl nodes in trigonal tellurium studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on trigonal tellurium consisting of helical chains in the crystal. Through the band-structure mapping in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, we found a definitive evidence for the band splitting originating from the chiral nature of crystal. A direct comparison of the band dispersion between the ARPES results and the first-principles band-structure calculations suggests the presence of Weyl nodes and tiny spin-polarized hole pockets around the H point. The present result opens a pathway toward studying the interplay among crystal symmetry, band structure, and exotic physical properties in chiral crystals.

Magnetodielectric detection of magnetic quadrupole order in Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ with Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ square cupolas

In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent multipole moments. Such multipole moments have broken space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and can therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME) activity. Three types of such multipole moments are known: toroidal, monopole, and quadrupole moments. So far, however, the ME-activity of these multipole moments has only been established experimentally for the toroidal moment. Here, we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing square-coordinated metal-ligand fragments form a noncoplanar buckled structure, as a promising structural unit that carries an ME-active multipole moment. We substantiate this idea by observing clear magnetodielectric signals associated with an antiferroic ME-active magnetic quadrupole order in the real material Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The present result serves as a useful guide for exploring and designing new ME-active materials based on vortex-like spin arrangements.

Direct Observation of Nonequivalent Fermi-Arc States of Opposite Surfaces in Noncentrosymmetric Weyl Semimetal NbP

We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate NbP, and determined the electronic states of both Nb- and P-terminated surfaces corresponding to the "opposite" surfaces of a polar crystal. We revealed a drastic difference in the Fermi-surface topology between the opposite surfaces, whereas the Fermi arcs on both surfaces are likely terminated at the surface projection of the same bulk Weyl nodes. Comparison of the ARPES data with our first-principles band calculations suggests notable difference in electronic structure at the Nb-terminated surface between theory and experiment. The present result opens a platform for realizing exotic quantum phenomena arising from unusual surface properties of Weyl semimetals.

A-site driven ferroelectricity in strained ferromagnetic L2NiMnO6 thin films

We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of A-site driven ferroelectricity in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations show that epitaxial strain stretches the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 crystal lattice along the [111]cubic direction, triggering a displacement of the A-site La ions in the double perovskite lattice. The lattice distortion and the A-site displacements stabilize a ferroelectric polar state in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 crystals. The ferroelectric state only appears in the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 phase, where MnO6 and NiO6 octahedral tilting is inhibited by the 3-fold crystal symmetry. Electron localization mapping showed that covalent bonding with oxygen and 6s orbital lone pair formation are negligible in this material.

Magnetically-Driven Ferroelectric Atomic Displacements in perovskite like YMnO3

Magnetically-driven ferroelectric atomic displacements of the order of 10$^{-3} Angstrom have been observed in orthorhombic (perovskite like) YMnO$_3$ by a single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The refined polar structure shows the characteristic bond alternation driven by the exchange striction in staggered Mn-O-Mn arrays with $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ type ordering, giving rise to a spontaneous polarization along a-axis. First-principles calculations based on the Berry phase method as well as on the experimentally refined crystal structure can reproduce the observed polarization value.
