Magnetic and charge transport properties of the Na-based Os oxide pyrochlore

Na-based osmium oxide pyrochlore was synthesized for the first time by an ion-exchange method. KOs2O6 was used as a host compound. Elelectron probe micro-analysis, synchrotron x-ray diffraction analysis, and thermo-gravimetric analysis confirmed its structure not as the beta-type but as the defect-type pyrochlore. The composition was identified as Na1.4Os2O6.H2O. Electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization measurements of the polycrystalline Na1.4Os2O6.H2O clarified absence of superconductivity above 2 K, being in contrast to what were found for the beta-pyrochlore AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K). Sommerfeld coefficient of 22 mJ K-2 mol-1 of Na1.4Os2O6.H2O was smallest among those of AOs2O6. A magnetic anomaly at ~57 K and possible associated magnetoresistance (+3.7 % at 2 K in 70 kOe) were found.

Synthesis and superconducting properties of the iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO0.85

The iron oxyarsenide TbFeAsO0.85 was synthesized by a high-pressure method. A high-quality polycrystalline sample was obtained and characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. Bulk superconductivity with Tc of 42 K was clearly established without an F doping usually conducted to tune on superconductivity in the iron oxypnictide.

NaV2O4: a Quasi-1D Metallic Antiferromagnet with Half-Metallic Chains

NaV2O4 crystals were grown under high pressure using a NaCl flux, and the crystals were characterized with X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization. The structure of NaV2O4 consists of double chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra. The resistivity is highly anisotropic, with the resistivity perpendicular to the chains more than 20 times greater than that parallel to the chains. Magnetically, the intrachain interactions are ferromagnetic and the interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic; 3D antiferromagnetic order is established at 140 K. First principles electronic structure calculations indicate that the chains are half metallic. Interestingly, the case of NaV2O4 seems to be a quasi-1D analogue of what was found for half-metallic materials.

Metallic conductivity and a Ca substitution study of NaRh2O4 comprising a double chain system

The metallic compound NaRh2O4 forms a full range solid solution to the insulating phase CaRh2O4. At a Na concentration of 0.25 moles per formula unit, we found an unexpected contribution to the specific heat at low temperature [K. Yamaura et al. Chem. Mater. 17 (2005) 359]. To address this issue, specific heat and ac and dc magnetic susceptibilities were additionally measured under a variety of conditions for the Na0.25 sample. A new set of data clearly indicate the additional specific heat is magnetic in origin; however, the magnetic entropy is fairly small (~1 % of Schottky term for a simple splitting doublet), and there is no other evidence to suggest that a magnetic phase transition is responsible for the anomalous specific heat.

High-pressure synthesis, crystal structure determination, and a Ca substitution study of the metallic rhodium oxide NaRh2O4

The sodium rhodate NaRh2O4 was synthesized for the first time and characterized by neutron and x-ray diffraction studies, measurements of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and the Seebeck coefficient. NaRh2O4 crystallizes in the CaFe2O4-type structure, which is comprised of a characteristic RhO6 octahedra network. The compound is metallic in nature, probably reflecting the 1 to 1 mixed valence character of Rh(III) and Rh(IV) in the network. For further studies of the compound, the Rh valence was varied significantly by means of an aliovalent substitution: the full range solid solution between NaRh2O4 and CaRh2O4 was achieved and characterized as well. The metallic state was dramatically altered, and a peculiar magnetism developed in the low Na concentration range.

Magnetic studies of the lightly Ru doped perovskite rhodates Sr(Ru,Rh)O$_3$

The solid solution between the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO$_3$ and the enhanced paramagnetic metal SrRhO$_3$ was recently reported [K. Yamaura et al., Phys. Rev. B 69 (2004) 024410], and an unexpected feature was found in the specific heat data at $x$=0.9 of SrRu$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_3$. The feature was reinvestigated further by characterizing additional samples with various Ru concentrations in the vicinity of $x$=0.9. Specific heat and magnetic susceptibility data indicate that the feature reflects a peculiar magnetism of the doped perovskite, which appears only in the very narrow composition range 0.85$<$$x$$\le$0.95.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Tri-layered Perovskite Sr4Rh3O10: A New Member of the Strontium Rhodates Family

The tri-layered perovskite Sr4Rh3O10 is reported for the first time. High-pressure and high-temperature heating (6 GPa and 1500 C) brought about successful preparation of a polycrystalline sample of the expected member at n=3 of Srn+1RhnO3n+1. Neutron-diffraction studies revealed the orthorhombic crystal structure (Pbam) at room temperature and 3.4 K. Local structure distortions rotationally tilt the RhO6 octahedra ~12 degrees in the perovskite-based blocks along the c-axis, and approximately a 20 % disorder was found in sequence of the alternating rotational tilt. The sample was also investigated by measurements of specific heat, thermopower, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity. The data clearly revealed enhanced paramagnetism and electrically conducting character, which reflected nature of the correlated 4d5-electrons of Rh4+. However, no clear signs of magnetic and electrical transitions were observed above 2 K and below 70 kOe, providing a remarkable contrast to the rich electronic phenomena for the significantly relevant ruthenate, Sr4Ru3O10.

Investigation of the ferromagnetic transition in the correlated 4d perovskites SrRu$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_3$

The solid-solution SrRu$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_3$ ($0\le x \le1$) is a variable-electron-configuration system forming in the nearly-cubic-perovskite basis, ranging from the ferromagnetic 4$d^4$ to the enhanced paramagnetic 4$d^5$. Polycrystalline single-phase samples were obtained over the whole composition range by a high-pressure-heating technique, followed by measurements of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific heat, thermopower, and electrical resistivity. The ferromagnetic order in long range is gradually suppressed by the Rh substitution and vanishes at $x \sim 0.6$. The electronic term of specific-heat shows unusual behavior near the critical Rh concentration; the feature does not match even qualitatively with what was reported for the related perovskites (Sr,Ca)RuO$_3$. Furthermore, another anomaly in the specific heat was observed at $x \sim 0.9$.

Electronic properties of the novel 4d metallic oxide SrRhO3

The novel 4d perovskite compound SrRhO3 was investigated by isovalent doping studies. The solubility limits of Ca and Ba onto Sr-site were below 80% and 20%, respectively. Although SrRhO3 was chemically compressed, approximately 5.7% by the Ca doping, no significant influence was observed on the magnetic and electrical properties.

Crystal structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of the bilayered rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7

The bilayered rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature heating techniques. The single-phase polycrystalline sample of Sr3Rh2O7 was characterized by measurements of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and thermopower. The structural characteristics were investigated by powder neutron diffraction study. The rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 [Bbcb, a = 5.4744(8) A, b = 5.4716(9) A, c = 20.875(2) A] is isostructural to the metamagnetic metal Sr3Ru2O7, with five 4d electrons per Rh, which is electronically equivalent to the hypothetic bilayered ruthenium oxide, where one electron per Ru is doped into the Ru-327 unit. The present data show the rhodium oxide Sr3Rh2O7 to be metallic with enhanced paramagnetism, similar to Sr3Ru2O7. However, neither manifest contributions from spin fluctuations nor any traces of a metamagnetic transition were found within the studied range from 2 K to 390 K below 70 kOe.

Systematic trends in the electronic structure parameters of 4d transition metal oxides SrMO_{3} (M = Zr, Mo, Ru, and Rh)

We investigated the electronic structures of the perovskite-type 4$d$ transition metal oxides Sr$M$O$_3$ ($M$ = Zr, Mo, Ru, and Rh) using their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$. The interband transitions in $σ(ω)$ are assigned, and some important physical parameters, such as on-site Coulomb repulsion energy $U$, charge transfer energy $Δ_{pd}$, and crystal field splitting $10Dq$, are estimated. It is observed that $Δ_{pd}$ and 10$Dq$ decrease systematically with the increase in the atomic number of the 4$d$ transition metal. Compared to the case of 3$d$ transition metal oxides, the magnitudes of $Δ_{pd}$ and 10$Dq$ are larger, but those of $U$ are smaller. These behaviors can be explained by the more extended nature of the orbitals in the 4$d$ transition metal oxides.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of the Linear-Chain Cobalt Oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12

The novel spin-chain cobalt oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12 [P-62m, a = 10.1093(2) A and c = 3.562 51(9) A at 295 K] is reported. Polycrystalline sample of the compound was studied by neutron diffraction (at 6 and 295 K) and magnetic susceptibility measurements (5 to 390 K). The cobalt oxide was found to be analogous to the copper oxide Sr5Pb3CoO12, which is comprised of magnetic-linear chains at inter-chain distance of 10 A. Although the cobalt oxide chains (mu_eff of 3.64 mu_B per Co) are substantially antiferromagnetic (theta_W = -38.8 K), neither low-dimensional magnetism nor long-range ordering has been found; a local-structure disorder in the chains might impact on the magnetism. This compound is highly electrically insulating.

Crystal Structure and Magnetism of the Linear-Chain Copper Oxides Sr5Pb3-xBixCuO12

The title quasi-1D copper oxides (0=< x =<0.4) were investigated by neutron diffraction and magnetic susceptibility studies. Polyhedral CuO4 units in the compounds were found to comprise linear-chains at inter-chain distance of approximately 10 A. The parent chain compound (x = 0), however, shows less anisotropic magnetic behavior above 2 K, although it is of substantially antiferromagnetic (mu_{eff}= 1.85 mu_{B} and Theta_{W} = -46.4 K) spin-chain system. A magnetic cusp gradually appears at about 100 K in T vs chi with the Bi substitution. The cusp (x = 0.4) is fairly characterized by and therefore suggests the spin gap nature at Delta/k_{B} ~ 80 K. The chain compounds hold electrically insulating in the composition range.

Enhanced paramagnetism of the 4d itinerant electrons in the rhodium oxide perovskite SrRhO3

Polycrystalline rhodium(IV) oxide perovskite SrRhO3 was obtained by high-pressure synthesis techniques, followed by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The title compound has five 4d-electrons per perovskite unit and shows Fermi-liquid behavior in its electrical resistivity. The magnetic susceptibility is large [chi(300K) \~1.1*10^{-3} emu/mol-Rh] and proportional to 1/T^2 (< 380 K), while there is no magnetic long-range order above 1.8 K. The specific heat measurements indicate a probable magnetic contribution below ~ 15 K, which is not predicted by the self-consistent renormalization theory of spin fluctuations for both antiferro- and ferromagnetic 3D nearly-ordered metals.
