Quark-Jet model for transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions

In order to describe the hadronization of polarized quarks, we discuss an extension of the quark-jet model to transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions. The description is based on a product ansatz, where each factor in the product represents one of the transverse momentum dependent splitting functions, which can be calculated by using effective quark theories. The resulting integral equations and sum rules are discussed in detail for the case of inclusive pion production. In particular, we demonstrate that the 3-dimensional momentum sum rules are satisfied naturally in this transverse momentum dependent quark-jet model. Our results are well suited for numerical calculations in effective quark theories, and can be implemented in Monte-Carlo simulations of polarized quark hadronization processes.

Revision of the brick wall method for calculating the black hole thermodynamic quantities

Within the framework of the "brick wall model", a novel method is developed to compute the contributions of a scalar field to the thermodynamic quantities of black holes. The relations between (transverse) momenta and frequencies in Rindler space are determined numerically with high accuracy and analytically with an accuracy of better than 10 % and are compared with the corresponding quantities in Minkowski space. In conflict with earlier results, the thermodynamic properties of black holes turn out to be those of a low temperature system. The resulting discrepancy for partition function and entropy by two orders of magnitude is analyzed in detail. In the final part we carry out the analogous studies for scalar fields in de Sitter space and thereby confirm that our method applies also to the important case of spherically symmetric spaces.

Exotic hadrons and hadron-hadron interactions in heavy ion collisions

We discuss the exotic hadron structure and hadron-hadron interactions in view of heavy ion collisions. First, we demonstrate that a hadronic molecule with a large spatial size would be produced more abundantly in the coalescence model compared with the statistical model result. Secondly, we constrain the Lambda-Lambda interaction by using the recently measured Lambda-Lambda correlation data. We find that the RHIC-STAR data favor the Lambda-Lambda scattering parameters in the range 1/a_0 <= -0.8 fm^{-1} and r_{eff} >= 3 fm.

Static interactions and stability of matter in Rindler space

Dynamical issues associated with quantum fields in Rindler space are addressed in a study of the interaction between two sources at rest generated by the exchange of scalar particles, photons and gravitons. These static interaction energies in Rindler space are shown to be scale invariant, complex quantities. The imaginary part will be seen to have its quantum mechanical origin in the presence of an infinity of zero modes in uniformly accelerated frames which in turn are related to the radiation observed in inertial frames. The impact of a uniform acceleration on the stability of matter and the properties of particles is discussed and estimates are presented of the instability of hydrogen atoms when approaching the horizon.

The NJL-jet model for quark fragmentation functions

A description of fragmentation functions which satisfy the momentum and isospin sum rules is presented in an effective quark theory. Concentrating on the pion fragmentation function, we first explain why the elementary (lowest order) fragmentation process q --> q πis completely inadequate to describe the empirical data, although the "crossed" process π--> q \bar{q} describes the quark distribution functions in the pion reasonably well. Taking into account cascade-like processes in a generalized jet-model approach, we then show that the momentum and isospin sum rules can be satisfied naturally, without the introduction of ad hoc parameters. We present results for the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the invariant mass regularization scheme and compare them with the empirical parametrizations. We argue that the NJL-jet model, developed herein, provides a useful framework with which to calculate the fragmentation functions in an effective chiral quark theory.

Canonical quantization of gauge fields in static space-times with applications to Rindler spaces

The canonical quantization in Weyl gauge of gauge fields in static space-times is presented. With an appropriate definition of transverse and longitudinal components of gauge fields, the Gauss law constraint is resolved explicitly for scalar and spinor QED and a complete non-perturbative solution is given for the quantized Maxwell-field coupled to external currents. The formalism is applied in investigations of the electromagnetic field in Rindler spaces. The relation of creation and annihilation operators in Minkowski and Rindler spaces is established and initial value problems associated with bremsstrahlung of a uniformly accelerated charge are studied. The peculiar scaling properties of scalar and gauge theories in Rindler spaces are discussed and various quantities such as the photon condensate or the interaction energy of static charges and of scalar sources are computed.

Polarized structure functions of nucleons and nuclei

We determine the quark distributions and structure functions for both unpolarized and polarized DIS of leptons on nucleons and nuclei. The scalar and vector mean fields in the nucleus modify the motion of the quarks inside the nucleons. By taking into account this medium modification, we are able to reproduce the experimental data on the unpolarized EMC effect, and to make predictions for the polarized EMC effect. We discuss examples of nuclei where the polarized EMC effect could be measured. We finally present an extension of our model to describe fragmentation functions.

Chiral Symmetry in Light-Cone Field Theory

An analysis of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry in light-cone field theory is presented. The non-locality inherent to light-cone field theory requires revision of the standard procedure in the derivation of Ward-Takahashi identities. We derive the general structure of chiral Ward-Takahashi identities and construct them explicitly for various model field theories. Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relations and relations between fermion propagators and the structure functions of Nambu-Goldstone bosons are discussed and the necessary modifications of the Ward-Takahashi identities due to the axial anomaly are indicated.

Quark distributions in nuclear matter and the EMC effect

Quark light cone momentum distributions in nuclear matter and the structure function of a bound nucleon are investigated in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. This framework describes the nucleon as a relativistic quark-diquark state, and the nuclear matter equation of state by using the mean field approximation. The scalar and vector mean fields in the nuclear medium couple to the quarks in the nucleon and their effect on the spin independent nuclear structure function is investigated in detail. Special emphasis is placed on the important effect of the vector mean field and on a formulation which guarantees the validity of the number and momentum sum rules from the outset.

Axial vector diquark correlations in the nucleon: Structure functions and static properties

In order to extract information on the strength of quark-quark correlations in the axial vector (a.v.) diquark channel ($J^P=1^+, T=1$), we analyze the quark light cone momentum distributions in the nucleon, in particular their flavor dependencies, and the static properties of the nucleon. To construct the nucleon as a relativistic 3-quark bound state, we use a simple 'static' approximation to the full Faddeev equation in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, including correlations in the scalar ($J^P=0^+, T=0$) and a.v. diquark channels. It is shown that the a.v. diquark correlations should be rather weak compared to the scalar ones. From our analysis we extract information on the strength of the correlations as well as on the probability of the a.v. diquark channel.

Chiral Condensates in the Light-Cone Vacuum

In light-cone quantization, the standard procedure to characterize the phases of a system by appropriate ground state expectation values fails. The light-cone vacuum is determined kinematically. We show that meaningful quantities which can serve as order parameters are obtained as expectation values of Heisenberg operators in the equal (light-cone) time limit. These quantities differ from the purely kinematical expectation values of the corresponding Schroedinger operators. For the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio and the Gross-Neveu model, we describe the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry; we derive within light-cone quantization the corresponding gap equations and the values of the chiral condensate.

Quark distrbutions in the nucleon based on a relativistic 3-body approach to the NJL model

Quark light cone momentum distributions in the nucleon are calculated in a relativistic 3-body approach to the NJL model by using a simple 'static approximation' for the Faddeev kernel. A method is presented which automatically satisfies the number and momentum sum rules, even in the regularized theory. In order to assess the sensitivity to the regularization scheme, two schemes which can be formulated in terms of light cone variables are discussed. The effects of the (composite) pion cloud are taken into account in a convolution approach, and the violation of the Gottfried sum rule is discussed. After performing the Q^2 evolution, the resulting distributions are compared to the empirical ones.

NJL model on the light cone and pion structure function

The NJL model is formulated on the light cone. Using the 1/N expansion to solve the fermionic constraint, an effective 4-fermi lagrangian is derived. Pionic properties are investigated using this lagrangian, and the formal equivalence to the equal-time formulation is demonstrated. Two regularization schemes in terms of light-cone variables are discussed: An extension of the 'invariant mass cut-off scheme', and a transverse momentum cut-off scheme. It is shown that the first one is equivalent to the covariant 3-momentum cut-off (dispersion cut-off) scheme in the equal-time formulation. As an application the structure function of the pion is studied in both regularization schemes.

The interaction between H-dibaryons

We investigate the interaction between H-dibaryons employing a quark cluster model with a one-gluon-exchange potential and an effective meson exchange potential (EMEP). A deeply-bound state of two H-dibaryons due to the medium range attraction of the EMEP is obtained. The bound H--H system has a size of about 0.8 $\sim$ 0.9 fm because of the short-range repulsion generated by the color-magnetic interaction and the Pauli principle.

QCD Sum Rules and the Validity of Effective Models

The consistency of effective models with QCD is investigated through the use of the QCD sum rule. Taking the potential model for the heavy quark system, we apply the method to two phenomenologically successful parameter sets, and obtain the dependences of the model parameters on the QCD scale $Λ$. Comparison with the expected scaling laws allows us to reject one of the two sets. The method is applicable to any model which reproduces the low lying spectra of hadronic systems.
