Transverse order and longitudinal fluctuations in a near-Ising spin supersolid

We investigate the polarization of the ordered moments and low-energy spin fluctuations in the spin supersolid state of the S = 1/2 triangular-lattice easy-axis antiferromagnet K2Co(SeO3)2 using neutron scattering. The supersolid order develops through successive BKT transitions: the longitudinal order appears at higher temperature, while the transverse component associated with the Bose-Einstein condensate emerges only below a lower-temperature transition accompanied by a change in the interlayer correlations. At the lowest measured temperature, the transverse ordered moment reaches only 11% of the longitudinal component. Moreover, the low-energy spin fluctuations are found to be predominantly longitudinal in character. These results provide direct evidence that the supersolid ground state survives even in the near-Ising regime and exhibits longitudinal low-energy dynamics, imposing stringent constraints on microscopic theories of triangular-lattice XXZ antiferromagnets.

Magnetic phase diagram and spin Hamiltonian of antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoI$_4$

We report comprehensive thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements on the $S$ = 3/2 antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoI$_4$, a member of the thoroughly studied family of frustrated magnets Cs$_2MX_4$ ($M$ = Cu, Co, Ru, $X$ = Br, Cl, I, O). Unlike previously studied members, Cs$_2$CoI$_4$ undergoes a structural phase transition, for which we determine the low-temperature crystallographic structure. The resulting symmetry reduction strongly affects both the magnetic exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy. Despite the large parameter space, we propose a minimal magnetic Hamiltonian that reasonably captures the observed excitation spectrum, analyzed using extended SU(4) linear spin-wave theory.

Dynamics and thermodynamics of the S = 5/2 almost Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet K2Mn(SeO3)2

We report calorimetric, magnetic, and neutron scattering studies on an S = 5/2, nearly Heisenberg triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K2Mn(SeO3)2 with weak XXZ easy-axis anisotropy. Multiple magnetic phases are identified, including a non-collinear Y phase in zero field, a field-induced collinear m = 1/3 magnetization plateau, and a high-field V phase. In the Y phase, the magnetic excitation spectrum exhibits both single-magnon excitations and an extended high-energy continuum. Both features are well described by non-linear spin wave theory. In the field-induced phases, complex effects of the spectrum renormalization even for large S = 5/2 material are clearly detectable. These results underscore the essential role of magnon-magnon interactions in the dynamics of large-S Heisenberg spin systems on a triangular lattice.

Pressure-Tuned Metamagnetism and Emergent Three-Body Interactions in CsFeCl$_3$

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_3$ under high magnetic fields and high pressure. Pulsed-field magnetization for the magnetic field along the symmetric $c$ direction at ambient pressure reveals a magnetization process from a nonmagnetic singlet ground state with a nearly linear increase between 3.7 and 10.7 T, a plateau-like region, and then a sharp stepwise metamagnetic transition near 32 T. Wide frequency--field range electron spin resonance indicates that the low-field regime originates from the $J = 1$ manifold, while the high-field metamagnetic transition suggests a level crossing between the $J = 1$ and $J = 2$ lowest states. Pulsed-field magnetic susceptibilities measured with a proximity detector oscillator under high pressure show that the low-field nonmagnetic singlet phase is gradually suppressed, while the high-field metamagnetic transition evolves into an increasingly rich pattern of fractional steps. While the observations at low to intermediate fields can be understood within the established spin-1 description, the high-field regime requires a new perspective, which we provide through a projected spin-1/2 framework built from Zeeman-selected crystal-field states not related by time reversal. This construction naturally allows emergent three-body interactions on triangular plaquettes and explains the asymmetric evolution of the fractional steps in the magnetization. Our findings reveal that high-field effective spin models in quantum magnets with separated yet accessible crystal-field multiplets are not constrained to even-body couplings, but can naturally host odd-body terms, opening a broader avenue for realizing field-asymmetric magnetization processes and exotic phases beyond conventional even-body physics.

$\mathbb{Z}_2$ Vortex Crystal Candidate in the Triangular $S=1/2$ Quantum Antiferromagnet

The prospect of merging the paradigms of geometric frustration on a triangular lattice and bond anisotropies in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit holds tremendous promise in the ongoing hunt for exotic quantum materials. Here we identify a new candidate system to realize such physics, the organic quantum antiferromagnet (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$. We report a combination of thermodynamic, magneto-elastic and neutron scattering experiments on single-crystals to determine the phase diagram in axial magnetic fields $\mathbf{H \parallel c}$ and propose a minimal model Hamiltonian. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ displays an ideal triangular arrangement of Ru$^{3+}$ ions adopting the spin-orbital entangled $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ state. It hosts residual magnetic order below $T_{\rm N} = 0.23$ K and a highly unusual $H-T$ phase diagram including three different incommensurate states. Spin-waves in the high-field polarized regime are well described by a Heisenberg-like triangular lattice Hamiltonian with a potential sub-leading bond dependent anisotropy term $J_{\pm\pm}$. We discuss possible candidate magnetic structures in the various observed phases and propose two mechanisms that could explain the field-dependent incommensurability, requiring either a small ferromagnetic Kitaev term or a tiny magneto-elastic $J-J'$ isosceles distortion driven by pseudospin-lattice coupling. We argue that the multi-$\mathbf{q}$ ground state in zero magnetic field is a prime candidate for hosting the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystal proposed on the triangular Heisenberg-Kitaev model. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ is the first member in an extended family of quantum triangular lattice magnets, providing a new playground to study the interplay of geometric frustration and spin-orbit effects.

Pseudo-Goldstone mode in altermagnetic $\alpha$-MnTe: high-field electron spin resonance studies

We report multi-frequency electron spin resonance spectroscopy studies of $\alpha$-MnTe in magnetic fields up to $16$ T, applied along the easy anisotropy axis. At temperatures below $T_\mathrm{N} = 310$ K, we observe a single resonance line corresponding to the pseudo-Goldstone mode of the antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). This mode exhibits the isotropic behavior with $g_\mathrm{eff}=2.01$, consistent with a complete quench of the orbital angular momenta for Mn$^{2+}$ ions. At low temperatures, the resonance mode is remarkably narrow ($\sim50$ mT for the full width at the half-maximum at $5$ K). The AFMR mode exhibits substantial broadening with increasing temperature, which can be understood in terms of the magnon-magnon scattering

Spin-flop-like transition as quantum critical point in Cs$_2$RuO$_4$

We report thermodynamic, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Cs$_2$RuO$_4$, a member of the celebrated family of frustrated magnets Cs$_2$MX$_4$ (M = Cu, Co, X = Br, Cl). Unlike the previously studied members, it is based on $4d$ transition metal ions with $S=1$. Mapping out the $H-T$ magnetic phase diagram reveals an unusual continuous spin-flop-like phase transition associated with a quantum critical point within the antiferromagnetically ordered phase. A quantitative analysis of the complex magnetic excitation spectrum measured in zero field allows us to derive a model magnetic Hamiltonian for this compound. Its main feature is a frustration of magnetic anisotropy on a level that is much higher than in any of the previously studied species. This frustration naturally explains the peculiar phase transition observed.

High-field magnetic properties of the alternating ferro-antiferromagnetic spin-chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br

We present comprehensive high magnetic field studies of the alternating weakly coupled ferro-antiferromagnetic (FM-AFM) spin-$1/2$ chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br, with the structure of the natural mineral botallackite. Our measurements reveal a broad magnetization plateau at about half of the saturation value, strongly suggesting that the FM chain sublattice becomes fully polarized, while the AFM chain sublattice remains barely magnetized, in magnetic fields at least up to $50$ T. We confirm a spin-reorientation transition for magnetic fields applied in the $ac^\ast$-plane, whose angular dependence is described in the framework of the mean-field theory. Employing high-field THz spectroscopy, we reveal a complex pattern of high-frequency spinon-magnon bound-state excitations. On the other hand, at lower frequencies we observe two modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, as a consequence of the long-range magnetic ordering. We demonstrate that applied magnetic field tends to suppress the long-range magnetic ordering; the temperature-field phase diagram of the phase transition is obtained for magnetic fields up to $14$ T for three principal directions ($a$, $b$, $c^\ast$).

Dielectric relaxation in the quantum multiferroics Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ and Cs$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$

Motivated by the recent discovery of dielectric relaxation by quantum critical magnons in Cs$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we conduct a detailed analysis of its dielectric response and compare it to that in the isostructural compound Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$. Measurements in the vicinity of the field-induced magnon softening show that its description in terms of 3D Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons quantum critical point is unaltered by the presence of dielectric relaxation. We also demonstrate the existence of dielectric relaxation anomalies at 19 K in Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ and discuss the implications for the microscopic origin of dielectric activity in two compounds.

Narrowly avoided spin-nematic phase in BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$: NMR evidence

We present a $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ focusing on the nearly saturated regime between $μ_0H_{c1}$ = 4.05 T and $μ_0H_{c2}$ = 6.5 T, which used to be considered a promising candidate for a spin-nematic phase. NMR spectra establish the absence of any dipolar order there, whereas the weak field dependence of the magnetization above $H_{c1}$ is accounted for by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction terms. The low-energy spin dynamics (fluctuations), measured by the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$, confirms the continuity of this phase and the absence of any low-temperature phase transition. Unexpectedly, the spin dynamics above $H_{c1}$ is largely dominated by two-magnon processes, which is expected above the saturation field of a spin-nematic phase, but not inside. This shows that BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$ is indeed close to a spin-nematic instability; however, this phase is not stabilized. We thus confirm recent theoretical predictions that the spin-nematic phase can be stabilized, at most, in an extremely narrow field range close to saturation or is rather narrowly avoided [Jiang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 116701 (2023)].

Magnetic field-induced phases and spin Hamiltonian in Cs2CoBr4

Magnetic structures and spin excitations are studied across the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated S = 3/2 quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CoBr4 in magnetic fields applied along the magnetic easy axis, using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and THz absorption spectroscopy. The data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU (4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high field polarized state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

Excitation Spectrum and Spin Hamiltonian of the Frustrated Quantum Ising Magnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$

We present a thorough experimental investigation on single crystals of the rare-earth based frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$, a purported spin-liquid candidate on the breathing kagome lattice. This material possesses a disordered ground state with an unusual excitation spectrum involving a coexistence of sharp spin-waves and broad continuum excitations. Nevertheless, we show through a combination of thermodynamic, magnetometric and spectroscopic probes with detailed theoretical modeling that it should be understood in a completely different framework. The crystal field splits the lowest quasi-doublet states into two singlets moderately coupled through frustrated superexchange, resulting in a simple effective Hamiltonian of an Ising model in a transverse magnetic field. While our neutron spectroscopy data do point to significant correlations within the kagome planes, the dominant interactions are out-of-plane, forming frustrated triangular spin-tubes through two competing ferro-antiferromagnetic bonds. The resulting ground state is a simple quantum paramagnet, but with significant modifications to both thermodynamic and dynamic properties due to small perturbations to the transverse field Ising model in the form of hyperfine enhanced nuclear moments and weak structural disorder.

Continuum excitations in a spin-supersolid on a triangular lattice

Magnetic, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering are used to study spin correlations in the easy-axis XXZ triangular lattice magnet K2Co(SeO3)2. Despite the presence of quasi-2D "supersolid" magnetic order, the low-energy excitation spectrum contains no sharp modes and is instead a broad and structured multi-particle continuum. Applying a weak magnetic field drives the system into an m = 1/3 fractional magnetization plateau phase and restores sharp spin wave modes. To some extent, the behavior at zero field can be understood in terms of spin wave decay. However, the presence of clear excitation minima at the M-points of the Brillouin zone suggest that the spinon language may provide a more adequate description, and signals a possible proximity to a Dirac spin liquid state.

Confinement of fractional excitations in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet

High-resolution neutron and THz spectroscopies are used to study the magnetic excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$, a distorted-triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with nearly XY-type anisotropy. What was previously thought of as a broad excitation continuum [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 087201 (2022)] is shown to be a series of dispersive bound states reminiscent of "Zeeman ladders" in quasi-one-dimensional Ising systems. At wave vectors where inter-chain interactions cancel at the Mean Field level, they can indeed be interpreted as bound finite-width kinks in individual chains. Elsewhere in the Brillouin zone their true two-dimensional structure and propagation are revealed.

Spin Density Wave versus Fractional Magnetization Plateau in a Triangular Antiferromagnet

We report an excellent realization of the highly non-classical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Critical dielectric susceptibility at a magnetic BEC quantum critical point

Magnetic-field-induced phase transitions are investigated in the frustrated gapped quantum paramagnet Rb$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ through dielectric and calorimetric measurements on single-crystal samples. It is clarified that the previously reported dielectric anomaly at 8~K in powder samples is not due to a chiral spin liquid state as has been suggested, but rather to a tiny amount of a ferroelectric impurity phase. Two field-induced quantum phase transitions between paraelectric and paramagnetic and ferroelectric and magnetically ordered states are clearly observed. It is shown that the electric polarization is a secondary order parameter at the lower-field (gap closure) quantum critical point but a primary one at the saturation transition. Having clearly identified the magnetic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) nature of the latter, we use the dielectric channel to directly measure the critical divergence of BEC susceptibility. The observed power-law behavior is in very good agreement with theoretical expectations for three-dimensional BEC. Finally, dielectric data reveal magnetic presaturation phases in this compound that may feature exotic order with unconventional broken symmetries.

Inelastic neutron scattering determination of the spin Hamiltonian for BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$

Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering is used to study spin wave excitations in the fully polarized state of the frustrated quantum ferro-antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The data analysis is based on a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian that includes as many distinct nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor interactions as allowed by crystal symmetry. All 8 such exchange constants are obtained in a simultaneous fit to over 150 scans across the dispersion manifold. This establishes a definitive quantitative model of this material. It turns out to be substantially different from the one assumed in numerous previous studies based on powder experiments.

Magnetization plateaux cascade in the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$

We have found an unusual competition of two frustration mechanisms in the 2D quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. The key actors are the alternation of single-ion planar anisotropy direction of the individual magnetic Co$^{2+}$ ions, and their arrangement in a distorted triangular lattice structure. In particular, the uniquely oriented Ising-type anisotropy emerges from the competition of easy-plane ones, and for a magnetic field applied along this axis one finds a cascade of five ordered phases at low temperatures. Two of these phases feature magnetization plateaux. The low-field one is supposed to be a consequence of a collinear ground state stabilized by the anisotropy, while the other plateau bears characteristics of an "up-up-down" state exclusive for lattices with triangular exchange patterns. Such coexistence of the magnetization plateaux is a fingerprint of competition between the anisotropy and the geometric frustration in Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$.
