Impact of the in-medium cross section on cluster spectra in ${}^{40,48}\mathrm{Ca}+{}^{58,64}\mathrm{Ni}$ collisions at $56$ and $140$ $\mathbf{\mathrm{MeV}}/\mathrm{\mathbf{nucleon}}$

Although significant efforts have been made to investigate the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy, the influence of the in-medium cross section on particle production in transport models is not well constrained. The in-medium cross section reflects the dynamic situation of the medium such as a nontrivial phase space distribution. In this study, we analyze the transverse momentum spectra of $p$, $d$, $t$, ${}^3{\mathrm{He}}$ and $\alpha$ particles emitted near mid-rapidity in central $^{40,48}\mathrm{Ca}$ + $^{58, 64}\mathrm{Ni}$ reactions at $56$ and $140$ $\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{nucleon}$. The Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics ($\mathrm{AMD}$) model is chosen as the transport model for data comparison. Central events are selected based on charged-particle multiplicity in both the experimental data and AMD calculations after applying an experimental filter. Our results show that the in-medium nucleon-nucleon scattering cross-sections are more strongly reduced at $56$ $\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{nucleon}$ than at $140$ $\mathrm{MeV}/\mathrm{nucleon}$ incident energy.

Measurement of the X-ARAPUCA's Absolute Photon Detection Efficiency for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment's Vertical Drift Far Detector

The DUNE experiment will implement a photon detection system composed of X-ARAPUCA (XA) devices. These trap incoming VUV photons by internal reflection in a wavelength shifter light guide to be collected onto silicon photomultiplier arrays, sensitive to visible light. In the baseline design, dichroic filters are used to prevent photons from escaping. The configuration proposed for DUNE's Vertical Drift (VD) module has been characterised in liquid argon for the first time using dedicated cryogenic setups developed at CIEMAT and INFN Naples. Additionally, several alternative configurations, based on the design optimisation studies of an R&D campaign, have been evaluated. The results show an efficiency of up to 4.5$\pm$4~% at 4.5~V overvoltage, representing a significant improvement over previous XA implementations. Most notably, configurations without dichroic filters show an improvement of up to 18~%, attributed to transmittance losses in the dichroic filters.

neuSIM4: A comprehensive GEANT4 based neutron simulation code

A new neutron SIMulation program based on the versatile GEANT4 toolkit, neuSIM4, has been developed to describe interactions of neutrons in the NE213 liquid scintillator from 0.1 to 3000 MeV. neuSIM4 is designed to accommodate complicated modern detector geometry setups with multiple scintillator detectors, each of which can be outfitted with more than one photo-multiplier. To address a broad spectrum of neutron energies, two new neutron interaction physics models, KSCIN and NxQMD, have been implemented in GEANT4. For neutrons with energy below 110 MeV, we incorporate a total of eleven neutron induced reaction channels on hydrogen and carbon nuclei, including nine carbon inelastic reaction channels, into KSCIN. Beyond 110 MeV, we implement a neutron induced reaction model, NxQMD, in GEANT4. We use its results as reference to evaluate other neutron-interaction physics models in GEANT4. We find that results from an existing cascade physics model (INCL) in GEANT4 agree very well with the results from NxQMD, and results from both codes agree with new and existing light response data. To connect KSCIN to NxQMD or INCL, we introduce a transition region where the contribution of neuSIM4 linearly decreases with corresponding increased contributions from NxQMD or INCL. To demonstrate the application of the new code, we simulate the light response and performance of a 2 x 2 m2 neutron detector wall array consisting of 25 2m-long scintillation bars. We are able to compare the predicted light response functions to the shape of the experimental response functions and calculate the efficiency of the neutron detector array for neutron energies up to 200 MeV. These simulation results will be pivotal for understanding the performance of modern neutron arrays with intricate geometries, especially in the measurements of neutron energy spectra in heavy-ion reactions.

Determination of energy-dependent neutron backgrounds using shadow bars

Understanding the neutron background is essential for determining the neutron yield from nuclear reactions. In the analysis presented here, the shadow bars are placed in front of neutron detectors to determine the energy dependent neutron background fractions. The measurement of neutron spectra with and without shadow bars is important to determine the neutron background more accurately. The neutron background, along with its sources and systematic uncertainties, are explored with a focus on the impact of background models and their dependence on neutron energy.

Physics in the tau-charm Region at BESIII

The Beijing Spectrometer (BESIII) collaboration uses $e^+e^-$ collisions in the tau-charm energy region to study a broad spectrum of topics. These include studies of light mesons and light baryons, studies of charmonium, including exotic mesons and baryons containing charmonium, studies of charmed mesons and baryons, studies of QCD and tau physics, as well as searches for new physics. The following is a Snowmass white paper that outlines the BESIII accomplishments and potential in each of these areas.

Reaction Losses of Charged Particles in CsI(Tl) crystals

To efficiently detect energetic light charged particles, it is common to use arrays of energy-loss telescopes involving two or more layers of detection media. As the energy of the particles increases, thicker layers are usually needed. However, carrying out measurements with thick-telescopes may require corrections for the losses due to nuclear reactions induced by the incident particles on nuclei within the detector and for the scattering of incident particles out of the detector, without depositing their full energy in the active material. In this paper, we develop a method for measuring such corrections and determine the reaction and out-scattering losses for data measured with the silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes of the newly developed HiRA10 array. The extracted efficiencies are in good agreement with model predictions using the GEANT4 reaction loss algorithm for Z=1 and Z=2 isotopes. After correcting for the HiRA10 geometry, a general function that describes the efficiencies from the reaction loss in CsI(Tl) crystals as a function of range is obtained.

Using spin alignment of inelastically-excited fast beams to make spin assignments: the spectroscopy of 13O as a test case

Excited states in 13O were investigated using inelastic scattering of an E/A=69.5-MeV 13O beam off of a 9Be target. The excited states were identified in the invariant-mass spectra of the decay products. Both single proton and sequential two-proton decays of the excited states were examined. For a number of the excited states, the protons were emitted with strong anisotropy where emissions transverse to the beam axis are favored. The measured proton-decay angular distributions were compared to predictions from distorted-wave born-approximation (DWBA) calculations of the spin alignment which was shown to be largely independent of the excitation mechanism. The deduced $^{13}$O level scheme is compared to ab initio no-core shell model with continuum (NCSMC) predictions. The lowest-energy excited states decay isotropically consistent with predictions of strong proton 1s1/2 structure. Above these states in the level scheme, we observed a number of higher-spin states not predicted within the model. Possibly these are associated with rotational bands built on deformed cluster configurations predicted by antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) calculations. The spin alignment mechanism is shown to be useful for making spin assignments and may have widespread use.

Value-assigned pulse shape discrimination for neutron detectors

Using the waveforms from a digital electronic system, an offline analysis technique on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) has been developed to improve the neutron-gamma separation in a bar-shaped NE-213 scintillator that couples to a photomultiplier tube (PMT) at each end. The new improved method, called the ``valued-assigned PSD'' (VPSD), assigns a normalized fitting residual to every waveform as the PSD value. This procedure then facilitates the incorporation of longitudinal position dependence of the scintillator, which further enhances the PSD capability of the detector system. In this paper, we use radiation emitted from an AmBe neutron source to demonstrate that the resulting neutron-gamma identification has been much improved when compared to the traditional technique that uses the geometric mean of light outputs from both PMTs. The new method has also been modified and applied to a recent experiment at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) that uses an analog electronic system.

Impact of climatic, technical and economic uncertainties on the optimal design of a coupled fossil-free electricity, heating and cooling system in Europe

To limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, fossil-free energy systems will be required eventually. To understand how such systems can be designed, the current state-of-the-art is to apply techno-economical optimisation modelling with high spatial and temporal resolution. This approach relies on a number of climatic, technical and economic predictions that reach multiple decades into the future. In this paper, we investigate how the design of a fossil-free energy system for Europe is affected by changes in these assumptions. In particular, the synergy among renewable generators, power-to-heat converters, storage units, synthetic gas and transmission manage to deliver an affordable net-zero emissions system. We find that levelised cost of energy decreases due to heat savings, but not for global temperature increases. In both cases, heat pumps become less favourable as surplus electricity is more abundant for heating. Demand-side management through buildings' thermal inertia could shape the heating demand, yet has modest impact on the system configuration. Cost reductions of heat pumps impact resistive heaters substantially, but not the opposite. Cheaper power-to-gas could lower the need for thermal energy storage.

Particle decays of levels in $^{11,12}$N and $^{12}$O investigated with the invariant-mass method

Particle-decaying states of the light nuclei $^{11,12}$N and $^{12}$O were studied using the invariant-mass method. The decay energies and intrinsic widths of a number of states were measured, and the momentum correlations of three-body decaying states were considered. A second 2$p$-decaying 2$^+$ state of $^{12}$O was observed for the first time, and a higher energy $^{12}$O state was observed in the 4$p$+2$α$ decay channel. This 4$p$+2$α$ channel also contains contributions from fission-like decay paths, including $^6$Be$_{g.s.}$+$^{6}$Be$_{g.s.}$. Analogs to these states in $^{12}$O were found in $^{12}$N in the 2$p$+$^{10}$B and 2$p$+$α$+$^6$Li channels. The momentum correlations for the prompt 2$p$ decay of $^{12}$O$_{g.s.}$ were found to be nearly identical to those of $^{16}$Ne$_{g.s.}$, and the correlations for the new 2$^+$ state were found to be consistent with sequential decay through excited states in $^{11}$N. The momentum correlations for the 2$^+_1$ state in $^{12}$O provide a new value for the $^{11}$N ground-state energy. The states in $^{12}$N/$^{12}$O that belong to the $A$=12 isobaric sextet do not deviate from the quadratic isobaric multiplet mass equation (IMME) form.

Non-linearity effects on the light-output calibration of light charged particles in CsI(Tl) scintillator crystals

The light output produced by light ions (Z<=4) in CsI(Tl) crystals is studied over a wide range of detected energies (E<=300 MeV). Energy-light calibration data sets are obtained with the 10 cm crystals in the recently upgraded High-Resolution Array (HiRA10). We use proton recoil data from 40,48Ca + CH2 at 28 MeV/u, 56.6 MeV/u, 39 MeV/u and 139.8 MeV/u and data from a dedicated experiment with direct low-energy beams. We also use the punch through points of p, d, and t particles from 40,48Ca + 58,64Ni, 112,124Sn collisions reactions at 139.8 MeV/u. Non-linearities, arising in particular from Tl doping and light collection efficiency in the CsI crystals, are found to significantly affect the light output and therefore the calibration of the detector response for light charged particles, especially the hydrogen isotopes. A new empirical parametrization of the hydrogen light output, L(E,Z=1,A), is proposed to account for the observed effects. Results are found to be consistent for all 48 CsI(Tl) crystals in a cluster of 12 HiRA10 telescopes.

Impact of CO2 prices on the design of a highly decarbonised coupled electricity and heating system in Europe

Ambitious targets for renewable energy and CO2 taxation both represent political instruments for decarbonisation of the energy system. We model a high number of coupled electricity and heating systems, where the primary sources of CO2 neutral energy are from variable renewable energy sources (VRES), i.e., wind and solar generators. The model includes hourly dispatch of all technologies for a full year for every country in Europe. In each model run, the amount of renewable energy and the level of CO2 tax are fixed exogenously, while the cost-optimal composition of energy generation, conversion, transmission and storage technologies and the corresponding CO2 emissions are calculated. We show that even for high penetrations of VRES, a significant CO2 tax of more than 100 euro/tCO2 is required to limit the combined CO2 emissions from the sectors to less than 5% of 1990 levels, because curtailment of VRES, combustion of fossil fuels and inefficient conversion technologies are economically favoured despite the presence of abundant VRES. A sufficiently high CO2 tax results in the more efficient use of VRES by means of heat pumps and hot water storage, in particular. We conclude that a renewable energy target on its own is not sufficient; in addition, a CO2 tax is required to decarbonise the electricity and heating sectors and incentivise the least cost combination of flexible and efficient energy conversion and storage.

Distribution uniformity of laser-accelerated proton beams

Compared with conventional accelerators, laser plasma accelerators can generate high energy ions at a greatly reduced scale, due to their TV/m acceleration gradient. A compact laser plasma accelerator (CLAPA) has been built at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics at Peking University. It will be used for applied research like biological irradiation, astrophysics simulations, etc. A beamline system with multiple quadrupoles and an analyzing magnet for laser-accelerated ions is proposed here. Since laser-accelerated ion beams have broad energy spectra and large angular divergence, the parameters (beam waist position in the Y direction, beam line layout, drift distance, magnet angles etc.) of the beamline system are carefully designed and optimised to obtain a radially symmetric proton distribution at the irradiation platform. Requirements of energy selection and differences in focusing or defocusing in application systems greatly influence the evolution of proton distributions. With optimal parameters, radially symmetric proton distributions can be achieved and protons with different energy spread within 5% have similar transverse areas at the experiment target.

Pion Production in Rare Isotope Collisions

Pion energy spectra are presented for central collisions of neutron-rich 132Sn+124Sn and neutron-deficient 108Sn+112Sn systems using simulations with Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model. These calculations, which incorporate isospin-dependent mean field potentials for relevant baryons and mesons, display a sensitivity to the pion spectra that could allow significant constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy and its mean field potential at supra-saturation densities. The predicted sensitivity increases with the isospin asymmetry of the total system and decreases with incident energy.

Overview of Spintronic Sensors, Internet of Things, and Smart Living

Smart living is a trending lifestyle that envisions lower energy consumption, sound public services, and better quality of life for human being. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a compelling platform connecting various sensors around us to the Internet, providing great opportunities for the realization of smart living. Spintronic sensors with superb measuring ability and multiple unique advantages can be an important piece of cornerstone for IoT. In this review, we discuss successful applications of spintronic sensors in electrical current sensing, transmission and distribution lines monitoring, vehicle detection, and biodetection. Traditional monitoring systems with limited sensors and wired communication can merely collect fragmented data in the application domains. In this paper, the wireless spintronic sensor networks (WSSNs) will be proposed and illustrated to provide pervasive monitoring systems, which facilitate the intelligent surveillance and management over building, power grid, transport, and healthcare. The database of collected information will be of great use to the policy making in public services and city planning. This work provides insights for realizing smart living through the integration of IoT with spintronic sensor technology.

Aging effect in the BESIII drift chamber

As the main tracking detector of BESIII, the drift chamber works for accurate measurements of the tracking and the momentum of the charged particles decayed from the reaction of BEPCII e+ and e-. After operation six years, the drift chamber is suffering from aging problems due to huge beam related background. The gains of the cells in the first ten layers experience an obvious decrease, reaching a maximum of about 29% for the first layer cells. Two calculation methods for the gains change (Bhabha events and accumulated charges with 0.3% aging ratio for inner chamber cells) get almost the same results. For the Malter effect encountered by the inner drift chamber in Jan., 2012, about 0.2% water vapor was added to MDC gas mixture to solve this cathode aging problem. These results provide an important reference for MDC operation high voltage setting and the upgrade of the inner drift chamber.

Determination of the relative phase in ψ' and J/ψ decays into baryon and antibaryon

With the recent measurements of psi' and J/psi decay into octet-baryon pairs, we study the relative phase between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes, and find a large phase by fitting the present data. The fits take into account the details of experimental effects, including energy spread and initial state radiation. We also predict some branching fractions of psi' decays and the continuum production rates at the J/psi mass based on the relative phase and absolute amplitudes obtained from the fits.

A Compact laser plasma accelerator (CLAPA) is being built in Peking University, which is based on RPA-PSA mechanism or other acceleration mechanisms. According to the beam parameters from preparatory experiments and theoretical simulations, the beam line is preliminarily designed. The beam line is mainly constituted by common transport elements to deliver proton beam with the energy of 1~50MeV, energy spread of 0~1% and current of 0~108 proton per pulse to satisfy the requirement of different experiments. The simulation result of 15MeV proton beam with an energy spread of 1%, current of 1x108 proton per pulse and final spot radius of 9mm is presented in this paper.
