Proton--induced deuteron breakup at GeV energies with forward emission of a fast proton pair

A study of the deuteron breakup reaction $pd \to (pp)n$ with forward emission of a fast proton pair with small excitation energy $E_{pp}<$ 3 MeV has been performed at the ANKE spectrometer at COSY--Jülich. An exclusive measurement was carried out at six proton--beam energies $T_p=$~0.6,~0.7,~0.8,~0.95,~1.35, and 1.9 GeV by reconstructing the momenta of the two protons. The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that of backward elastic $pd \to dp$ scattering, the results are compared to calculations based on a theoretical model previously applied to the $pd \to dp$ process.

Implementation of the control and data acquisition system for a small angle neutron scattering spectrometer according to the "Juelich-Munich standard"

In Forschungszentrum Juelich the control and data acquisition systems for several neutron spectrometers are being built. Because some of these spectrometers will be commissioned to the new research reactor FRM-II at the technical university of Munich, there was a joint effort with the instrumentation group of the FRM-II to establish the "Juelich-Munich standard", which is basically a collection of tools and devices which are used for the implementation of the spectrometers. This includes: Siemens S7 PLCs for all axis movement issues, PROFIBUS DP for the connection of slow control equipment in the front end, TACO Middleware running on PC-Systems with Linux, python for scripting and Qt for the implementation of GUIs. The paper describes the implementation the control and data acquisition system of the KWS-1, the first experiment built according to the above standard

Implementation of JFPC (Java for Process Control) under Linux - a mechanism to access industrial I/Os in a JAVA/Linux environment

Using JAVA for process control requires the access to I/O-Hardware. This problem is addressed in several ongoing standardisation efforts for Real Time Java. A spin-off of these standardisation efforts is the Siemens product JFPC (Java for Process Control), which is based on the ideas of OPC (OLE for Process Control). It is available under the proprietary RT kernel RMOS and under Windows NT. Based on a contract with Siemens, ZEL - the central electronics facility of Forschungszentrum Juelich - has implemented JFPC under Linux. Additionally, several JFPC providers, e.g for accessing industrial components via PROFIBUS DP have been implemented.

Simultaneous Measurements of the $p+d\to (A=3) +π$ Reactions

A stack of annular detectors made of high purity germanium was used to measure simultaneously $pd\to {^3H} π^+$ and $pd\to {^3He} π^0$ differential cross sections at beam momenta of 750 MeV/c, 800 MeV/c, and 850 MeV/c over a large angular range. The extracted total cross sections for the $pd\to {^3He} π^0$ reactions bridge a gap between near threshold data and those in the resonance region. The ratio of the cross sections for the two reaction channels taken at the same $η={p^{cm}_π}/m_π$ yields $2.11\pm0.08$ indicating that a deviation from isospin symmetry is very small.

Meson Production in p+d Reactions

The production of neutral and charged pions as well as eta mesons is studied in the Delta and N* resonance region, respectively. Heavy A=3 recoils were measured with the GEM detector. The differential cross sections covering the full angular range are compared with model calculations.

Measurement of p + d -> 3He + eta in S(11) Resonance

We have measured the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at a proton beam energy of 980 MeV, which is 88.5 MeV above threshold using the new ``germanium wall'' detector system. A missing--mass resolution of the detector system of 2.6% was achieved. The angular distribution of the meson is forward peaked. We found a total cross section of (573 +- 83(stat.) +- 69(syst.))nb. The excitation function for the present reaction is described by a Breit Wigner form with parameters from photoproduction.
