Theory of spin and lattice wave dynamics excited by focused laser pulses

We develop a theory of the spin wave dynamics excited by ultrafast focused laser pulses in a magnetic film. We take into account both volume and surface spin wave modes in the presence of applied, dipolar and magnetic anisotropy fields and include the dependence on laser spot exposure size and magnetic damping. We show that the sound waves generated by local heating by an ultrafast focused laser pulse can excite a wide spectrum of spin waves (on top of a dominant magnon-phonon contribution). Good agreement with recent experiments supports the validity of the model.

Interfacial spin Hall effect and spin swapping in Fe|Au bilayer from first principles

The interfaces in hybridized structures could give rise to rich phenomena, which open the way to novel devices with extraordinary performance. Here, we investigate the interface-related spin transport properties in Fe|Au bilayer based on first-principle calculation. We find that the spin Hall current in the Au side near the interface flows in the opposite direction to the bulk spin Hall current with the magnitude sensitive to the magnetization direction of Fe. This negative interfacial contribution is attributed to the spin dependent transmission within a few atomic layers, where a strong interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling exists. Surprisingly, the interfacial spin Hall currents are found to be not confined at the interface but extend tens of nanometers at low temperature, which is limited by momentum scattering and therefore much shorter than the spin diffusion length. In addition, the interfacial swapping spin currents, as a consequence of the spin precession under the interfacial Rashba field, are also obtained from our calculation and complete the full spin transport picture with all non-vanishing components. Our results suggest the importance of the interface engineering in spin-related transport in ferromagnetic|non-magnetic heterostructures and the possibility of manipulating the interfacial transport by the magnetization orientation of the magnetic layer.

Synchronized spin-photon coupling in a microwave cavity

We study spin-photon coupling in cavity in the presence of relative phase shift between two ferromagnetic resonance driving forces. We show that the anticrossing gap can be manipulated by varying the relative phase. Increasing the phase difference leads to narrowing the anticrossing gap of hybridized modes and eventually to phase locked coupling at the value of relative phase of π: The FMR and cavity modes become phase locked and oscillate at the same frequency near the resonance frequency. Characteristic linewidth drop and transmission amplitude enhancement are demonstrated. The phase resolved spin-photon coupling can be used both for phase imaging and controlling coupling parameters.

Finite temperature magnon spectra in yttrium iron garnet from mean field approach in tight-binding model

We study magnon spectra at finite temperature in yttrium iron garnet from tight-binding model with nearest neighboring exchange interaction. The spin reduction due to thermal magnon excitation are taken into account via the mean field approximation to the local spin and found to be different at two sets of iron atoms. The resulting temperature dependence of the spin wave gap shows good agreement with experiment. We find only two magnon modes are relevant to ferromagnetic resonance.

Theory of current-induced spin polarizations in an electron gas

We derive the Bloch equations for the spin dynamics of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of spin-orbit coupling. For the latter we consider both the intrinsic mechanisms of structure inversion asymmetry (Rashba) and bulk inversion asymmetry (Dresselhaus), and the extrinsic ones arising from the scattering from impurities. The derivation is based on the SU(2) gauge-field formulation of the Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling. Our main result is the identification of a new spin-generation torque arising from the Elliot-Yafet process, which opposes a similar term arising from the Dyakonov-Perel process. The new spin-generation torque contributes to the current-induced spin polarization (CISP) -- also known as the Edelstein or inverse spin-galvanic effect. As a result, the behavior of the CISP turns out to be more complex than one would surmise from consideration of the internal Rashba-Dresselhaus fields alone. In particular, the symmetry of the current-induced spin polarization does not necessarily coincide with that of the internal Rashba-Dresselhaus field, and an out-of-plane component of the CISP is generally predicted, as observed in recent experiments. We also discuss the extension to the three-dimensional electron gas, which may be relevant for the interpretation of experiments in thin films.

Magnon-polaron transport in magnetic insulators

We theoretically study the effects of strong magnetoelastic coupling on the transport properties of magnetic insulators. We develop a Boltzmann transport theory for the mixed magnon-phonon modes (magnon polarons) and determine transport coefficients and spin diffusion length. Magnon-polaron formation causes anomalous features in the magnetic field and temperature dependence of the spin Seebeck effect when the disorder scattering in the magnetic and elastic subsystems is sufficiently different. Experimental data by Kikkawa et al. [PRL 117, 207203 (2016)] on yttrium iron garnet films can be explained by an acoustic quality that is much better than the magnetic quality of the material. We predict similar anomalous features in the spin and heat conductivity and non-local spin transport experiments.

Magnon Polarons in the Spin Seebeck Effect

Sharp structures in magnetic field-dependent spin Seebeck effect (SSE) voltages of Pt/Y$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (YIG) at low temperatures are attributed to the magnon-phonon interaction. Experimental results are well reproduced by a Boltzmann theory that includes the magnetoelastic coupling (MEC). The SSE anomalies coincide with magnetic fields tuned to the threshold of magnon-polaron formation. The effect gives insight into the relative quality of the lattice and magnetization dynamics.

The Edelstein effect in the presence of impurity spin-orbit scattering

In this paper we study the current-induced spin polarization in a two-dimensional electron gas, known also as the Edelstein effect. Compared to previous treatments, we consider both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction as well as the spin-orbit interaction from impurity scattering. In evaluating the Kubo formula for the spin polarization response to an applied electric field, we explicitly take into account the side-jump and skew-scattering effects. We show that the inclusion of side-jump and skew-scattering modifies the expression of the current-induced spin polarization.

Laser-induced spatiotemporal dynamics of magnetic films

We present a theory for the coherent magnetization dynamics induced by a focused ultrafast laser beam in magnetic films, taking into account nonthermal (inverse Faraday effect) and thermal (heating) actuation. The dynamic conversion between spin waves and phonons is induced by the magnetoelastic coupling that allows efficient propagation of angular momentum. The anisotropy of the magnetoelastic coupling renders characteristic angle dependences of the magnetization propa-gation that are strikingly different for thermal and nonthermal actuation.

Spin current swapping and Hanle spin Hall effect in the two dimensional electron gas

We analyze the effect known as "spin current swapping" (SCS) due to electron-impurity scattering in a uniform spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas. In this effect a primary spin current $J_i^a$ (lower index for spatial direction, upper index for spin direction) generates a secondary spin current $J_a^i$ if $i \neq a$, or $J_j^j$, with $j\ne i$, if $i= a$. Contrary to naive expectation, the homogeneous spin current associated with the uniform drift of the spin polarization in the electron gas does not generate a swapped spin current by the SCS mechanism. Nevertheless, a swapped spin current will be generated, if a magnetic field is present, by a completely different mechanism, namely, the precession of the spin Hall spin current in the magnetic field. We refer to this second mechanism as Hanle spin Hall effect, and we notice that it can be observed in an experiment in which a homogeneous drift current is passed through a uniformly magnetized electron gas. In contrast to this, we show that an unambiguous observation of SCS requires inhomogeneous spin currents, such as those that are associated with spin diffusion in a metal, and no magnetic field. An experimental setup for the observation of the SCS is therefore proposed.

Inverse Edelstein Effect

We provide a precise microscopic definition of the recently observed "Inverse Edelstein Effect" (IEE), in which a non-equilibrium spin accumulation in the plane of a two-dimensional (interfacial) electron gas drives an electric current perpendicular to its own direction. The drift-diffusion equations that govern the effect are presented and applied to the interpretation of the experiments.

Collective Spin-Hall Effect for Electron-Hole Gratings

We show that an electric field parallel to the wavefronts of an electron-hole grating in a GaAs quantum well generates, via the electronic spin Hall effect, a spin grating of the same wave vector and with an amplitude that can exceed 1% of the amplitude of the initial density grating. We refer to this phenomenon as "collective spin Hall effect". A detailed study of the coupled-spin charge dynamics for quantum wells grown in different directions reveals rich features in the time evolution of the induced spin density, including the possibility of generating a helical spin grating.

Interacting drift-diffusion theory for photoexcited electron-hole gratings in semiconductor quantum wells

Phase-resolved transient grating spectroscopy in semiconductor quantum wells has been shown to be a powerful technique for measuring the electron-hole drag resistivity $ρ_{eh}$, which depends on the Coulomb interaction between the carriers. In this paper we develop the interacting drift-diffusion theory, from which $ρ_{eh}$ can be determined, given the measured mobility of an electron-hole grating. From this theory we predict a cross-over from a high-excitation-density regime, in which the mobility has the "normal" positive value, to a low-density regime, in which Coulomb-drag dominates and the mobility becomes negative. At the crossover point, the mobility of the grating vanishes.
