Optimal Control of Switched Systems Governed by Logical Switching Dynamics

This paper investigates the optimal co-design of logical and continuous controls for switched linear systems governed by controlled logical switching dynamics. Unlike traditional switched systems with arbitrary or state-dependent switching, the switching signals here are generated by an internal logical dynamical system and explicitly integrated into the control synthesis. By leveraging the semi-tensor product (STP) of matrices, we embed the coupled logical and continuous dynamics into a unified algebraic state-space representation, transforming the co-design problem into a tractable linear-quadratic framework. We derive Riccati-type backward recursions for both deterministic and stochastic logical dynamics, which yield optimal state-feedback laws for continuous control alongside value-function-based, state-dependent decision rules for logical switching. To mitigate the combinatorial explosion inherent in logical decision-making, a hierarchical algorithm is developed to decouple offline precomputation from efficient online execution. Numerical simulations demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework.

On stochastic control problems with higher-order moments

In this paper, we focus on a class of time-inconsistent stochastic control problems, where the objective function includes the mean and several higher-order central moments of the terminal value of state. To tackle the time-inconsistency, we seek both the closed-loop and the open-loop Nash equilibrium controls as time-consistent solutions. We establish a partial differential equation (PDE) system for deriving a closed-loop Nash equilibrium control, which does not include the equilibrium value function and is different from the extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations as in Björk et al. (Finance Stoch. 21: 331-360, 2017). We show that our PDE system is equivalent to the extended HJB equations that seems difficult to be solved for our higher-order moment problems. In deriving an open-loop Nash equilibrium control, due to the non-separable higher-order moments in the objective function, we make some moment estimates in addition to the standard perturbation argument for developing a maximum principle. Then, the problem is reduced to solving a flow of forward-backward stochastic differential equations. In particular, we investigate linear controlled dynamics and some objective functions affine in the mean. The closed-loop and the open-loop Nash equilibrium controls are identical, which are independent of the state value, random path and the preference on the odd-order central moments. By sending the highest order of central moments to infinity, we obtain the time-consistent solutions to some control problems whose objective functions include some penalty functions for deviation.

Continuous-time Mean-Variance Portfolio Selection with Stochastic Parameters

This paper studies a continuous-time market {under stochastic environment} where an agent, having specified an investment horizon and a target terminal mean return, seeks to minimize the variance of the return with multiple stocks and a bond. In the considered model firstly proposed by [3], the mean returns of individual assets are explicitly affected by underlying Gaussian economic factors. Using past and present information of the asset prices, a partial-information stochastic optimal control problem with random coefficients is formulated. Here, the partial information is due to the fact that the economic factors can not be directly observed. Via dynamic programming theory, the optimal portfolio strategy can be constructed by solving a deterministic forward Riccati-type ordinary differential equation and two linear deterministic backward ordinary differential equations.
