Acoustic Superradiance from a Bose-Einstein Condensate Vortex with a Self-Consistent Background Density Profile

The axisymmetric acoustic perturbations in the velocity potential of a Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a single vortex behave like minimally coupled massless scalar fields propagating in a curved (1+1) dimensional Lorentzian space-time, governed by the Klein-Gordon wave equation. Thus far, the amplified scattering of these perturbations from the vortex, as a manifestation of the acoustic superradiance, has been investigated with a constant background density. This paper goes beyond by employing a self-consistent condensate density profile that is obtained by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for an unbound BEC. Consequently, the loci of the event horizon and the ergosphere of the acoustic black hole are modified according to the radially varying speed of sound. The superradiance is investigated both for transient features in the time-domain and for spectral features in the frequency domain. In particular, an effective energy-potential function defined in the spectral formulation correlates with the existence and the frequency dependence of the acoustic superradiance. The numerical results indicate that the constant background density approximation underestimates the maximum superradiance and the frequency at which this maximum occurs.

Analog Black Holes and Energy Extraction by Super-Radiance from Bose Einstein Condensates (BEC) with Constant Density

This paper presents a numerical study of the acoustic superradiance from the single vortex state of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The draining bathtub model of an incompressible barotropic fluid is adopted to describe the vortex. The propagation of the velocity potential fluctuations are governed by the massless scalar Klein-Gordon wave equation, which establishes the rotating black-hole analogy. Hence, the amplified scattering of these fluctuations from the vortex comprise the superradiance effect. Particular to this study, a coordinate transformation is applied which enables the identification of the event horizon and the ergosphere termwise in the metric. Thus, the respective spectral solutions can be obtained asymptotically at either boundary. Further, the time-domain calculations of the energy of the propagating perturbations and the independently performed reflection coefficient calculations from the asymptotic solutions of the propagating perturbations are shown to be in very good agreement. While the former solution provides the full dynamical behavior of the superradiance, the latter method gives the frequency spectrum of the superradiance as a function of the rotational frequency of the vortex. Hence, a comprehensive analysis of the superradiance effect can be conducted within this workframe.

Non-Hermitian quantum dynamics and entanglement of coupled nonlinear resonators

We consider a generalization of recently proposed non-Hermitian model for resonant cavities coupled by a chiral mirror by taking into account number non-conservation and nonlinear interactions. We analyze non-Hermitian quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement of the cavity modes. We find that an interplay of initial coherence and non-Hermitian coupling leads to a counterintuitive population transfer. While an initially coherent cavity mode is depleted, the other empty cavity can be populated more or less than the initially filled one. Moreover, presence of nonlinearity yields population collapse and revival as well as bipartite entanglement of the cavity modes. In addition to coupled cavities, we point out that similar models can be found in $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric Bose-Hubbard dimers of Bose-Einstein condensates or in coupled soliton-plasmon waveguides. We specifically illustrate quantum dynamics of populations and entanglement in a heuristic model that we propose for a soliton-plasmon system with soliton amplitude dependent asymmetric interaction. Degree of asymmetry, nonlinearity and coherence are examined to control plasmon excitations and soliton-plasmon entanglement. Relations to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric lasers and Jahn-Teller systems are pointed out.

Reversal and tunability of the surface plasmon enhanced optical forces on a nanorod pair in the presence of a dielectric interlayer

We investigate numerically the modification of surface-plasmon assisted optical force on a gold nanorod pair by incorporating dielectric interlayer. The frequency dependent electromagnetic forces are obtained through full-vectorial solution of Maxwell equations with a finite element solver. We obtain the common and relative electromagnetic force experienced by the nanorods with dielectric interlayers of different permittivity or thickness. In particular, we demonstrate that the use of a liquid crystal interlayer can be utilized as a dynamic tuning mechanism for the reversal of the direction of the relative force.

Dissipative Nonlinear Josephson Junction of Optical Soliton and Surface Plasmon

We examine the dynamics of a dissipative photonic Josephson junction formed by the weak coupling of an optical soliton in a nonlinear dielectric waveguide and a co-propagating surface plasmon along a parallel metal surface with a linear dielectric spacer. We employ a heuristic model with a coupling function that depends on the soliton amplitude, and consider two phenomenological dissipation mechanisms separately: angular velocity dissipation and population imbalance dissipation. In the former dissipation mechanism, the system exhibits phase-slip phenomenon where the odd-πphase modes decay into even-πphase modes. The latter damping mechanism sculptures the phase-space significantly by introducing complex features, among which Hopf type bifurcations are notable. We show that some of the bifurcation points expand to stable limit cycles for certain regimes of the model parameters.

Dynamical analysis of a weakly coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon model as a new type of Josephson Junction

We propose that a weakly-coupled nonlinear dielectric waveguide -- surface-plasmon system can be formulated as a new type of Josephson junction. Such a system can be realized along a metal - dielectric interface where the dielectric medium hosts a nonlinear waveguide (e.g. fiber) for soliton propagation. We demonstrate that the system is in close analogy to the bosonic Josephson-Junction (BJJ) of atomic condensates at very low temperatures, yet exhibits different dynamical features. In particular, the inherently dynamic coupling parameter between soliton and surface-plasmon generates self-trapped oscillatory states at nonzero fractional populations with zero and $π$ time averaged phase difference. The salient features of the dynamics are presented in the phase space.
