Trapped Surface as a Cosmic Censor

We formulate a local geometric criterion for weak cosmic censorship in black hole overcharging and overspinning thought experiments. Under the null convergence and generic conditions, matter injection turns a horizon cross section into a closed trapped surface. Any final spacetime unable to accommodate this surface is ruled out. This trapped surface criterion excludes superextremal Reissner-Nordstr\"om, Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter, and Kerr-Newman final states, as well as Weyl-class naked singularities. Our criterion does not rely on asymptotic charges or on an extremal condition characterizing naked singularities.

Black Hole Thermodynamics Meets On-Shell Amplitudes: Local Detailed Balance and Thermal Spectrum from Spin Universality and Unitarity

We develop an on-shell framework for thermal dissipation and radiation by macroscopic objects, whose large degeneracy of internal states is encoded in their entropy. In this framework, equilibrium asymptotic states are represented as on-shell particles, while non-equilibrium processes are described by on-shell transition amplitudes between them. A central observation is that spinning states remain essential even for macroscopically non-rotating objects. Consistency with macroscopic symmetries then implies spin universality, whereby all spinning states are governed by a single universal coupling. A key consequence is that absorption and emission probabilities are controlled by the same coupling, yielding local detailed balance directly from on-shell data. Applied to black holes, our framework reproduces the thermal emission spectrum and relates the Hawking temperature to the condition of maximal absorption consistent with unitary time evolution.

Quantum Effects for Black Holes with On-Shell Amplitudes

We develop a framework based on modern amplitude techniques to analyze emission and absorption effects in black hole physics, including Hawking radiation. We first discuss quantum field theory on a Schwarzschild background in the Boulware and Unruh vacua, and introduce the corresponding $S$-matrices. We use this information to determine on-shell absorptive amplitudes describing processes where a black hole transitions to a different mass state by absorbing or emitting quanta, to all orders in gravitational coupling. This on-shell approach allows for a universal description of black holes, with their intrinsic differences encapsulated in the discontinuities of the amplitudes, without suffering from off-shell ambiguities such as gauge freedom. Furthermore, the absorptive amplitudes serve as building blocks to describe physics beyond that of isolated black holes. As applications, we find that the Hawking thermal spectrum is well understood by three-point processes. We also consider a binary system and compute the mass shift of a black hole induced by the motion of a companion object, including quantum effects. We show that the mean value of the mass shift is classical and vacuum-independent, while its variance differs depending on the vacuum choice. Our results provide confirmation of the validity of the on-shell program in advancing our understanding of black hole physics.

Apparent Horizons Associated with Dynamical Black Hole Entropy

We define entropic marginally outer trapped surfaces (E-MOTSs) as a generalization of apparent horizons. We then show that, under first-order perturbations around a stationary black hole, the dynamical black hole entropy proposed by Hollands, Wald, and Zhang, defined on a background Killing horizon, can be expressed as the Wall entropy evaluated on an E-MOTS associated with it. Our result ensures that the Hollands-Wald-Zhang entropy reduces to the standard Wald entropy in each stationary regime of a dynamical black hole, thereby reinforcing the robustness of the dynamical entropy formulation.

Causality Constraints on Black Hole Thermodynamics in Nonlinear Electrodynamics

We study causality constraints on black hole thermodynamics in nonlinear electrodynamics, where the Lagrangian is taken to be an arbitrary function of the electromagnetic field strength tensor. By requiring the absence of superluminal propagation, we show that the mass-to-charge ratio of extremal black holes exhibits a certain monotonicity previously studied in the context of the weak gravity conjecture. Furthermore, under the same condition, we demonstrate that the entropy-to-mass-squared ratio of black holes, which we interpret as an entropy density, decreases monotonically with increasing mass, while keeping the mass-to-charge ratio fixed. This new monotonicity property extends previous studies on the positivity of four-derivative corrections to black hole entropy in the microcanonical ensemble to all orders in nonlinear electrodynamics.

The First Law and Weak Cosmic Censorship for de Sitter Black Holes

We apply Iyer-Wald's covariant phase space formalism to asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes and establish the thermodynamic first law, expressed in terms of the Abbott-Deser mass. Similar to Iyer-Wald's first law for asymptotically flat black holes, our first law applies to general asymptotically de Sitter perturbations around a Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m-de Sitter black hole, without imposing any symmetry for the perturbations. We explicitly derive the first law up to the second order in perturbation. Additionally, we apply this first law to a thought experiment involving the overcharging of a Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m-de Sitter black hole by injecting energy and charge sources. We find that asymptotically de Sitter black holes cannot be overcharged, provided that the null energy condition holds, thereby reinforcing the weak cosmic censorship conjecture.

Black Hole Extremality in Nonlinear Electrodynamics: A Lesson for Weak Gravity and Festina Lente Bounds

We study black hole extremality in nonlinear electrodynamics motivated by the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) and the Festina Lente (FL) bound. For illustration, we consider the Euler-Heisenberg model and the Dirac-Born-Infeld model in asymptotically flat spacetime, de Sitter spacetime, and anti-de Sitter spacetime. We find that in all cases the extremal condition enjoys a certain monotonicity expected by the WGC. This provides evidence for the conjecture beyond the leading order corrections to the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We also study how light charged particles modify the mass-charge relation of Nariai black holes in de Sitter spacetime and discuss possible implications for the FL bound. Besides, we point out an interesting similarity between our black hole analysis and gravitational positivity bounds on scattering amplitudes.
