Anisotropic spin transport in two-terminal mesoscopic rings: the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions

We investigate theoretically the spin transport in two-terminal mesoscopic rings in the presence of both the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI). We find that the interplay between the RSOI and DSOI breaks the original cylindric symmetry of mesoscopic ring and consequently leads to the anisotropic spin transport, i.e., the conductance is sensitive to the positions of the incoming and outgoing leads. The anisotropic spin transport can survive even in the presence of disorder caused by impurity elastic scattering in a realistic system.

Direct optical detection of pure spin current in semiconductors

We suggest a new practical scheme for the direct detection of pure spin current by using the two-color Faraday rotation of optical quantum interference process (QUIP) in a semiconductor system. We demonstrate theoretically that the Faraday rotation of QUIP depends sensitively on the spin orientation and wave vector of the carriers, and can be tuned by the relative phase and the polarization direction of the $ω$ and $2ω$ laser beams. By adjusting these parameters, the magnitude and direction of the spin current can be detected.

Enhanced visibility of graphene: effect of one-dimensional photonic crystal

We investigate theoretically the light reflectance of a graphene layer prepared on the top of one-dimensional Si/SiO2 photonic crystal (1DPC). It is shown that the visibility of the graphene layers is enhanced greatly when 1DPC is added, and the visibility can be tuned by changing the incident angle and light wavelengths. This phenomenon is caused by the absorption of the graphene layer and the enhanced reflectance of the 1DPC.

Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect Induced by Quantum Phase Transition in HgCdTe Quantum Wells

Spin Hall effect can be induced both by the extrinsic impurity scattering and by the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in the electronic structure. The HgTe/CdTe quantum well has a quantum phase transition where the electronic structure changes from normal to inverted. We show that the intrinsic spin Hall effect of the conduction band vanishes on the normal side, while it is finite on the inverted side. This difference gives a direct mechanism to experimentally distinguish the intrinsic spin Hall effect from the extrinsic one.

Spin states and persistent currents in a mesoscopic ring with an embedded magnetic impurity

Spin states and persistent currents are investigated theoretically in a mesoscopic ring with an embedded magnetic ion under a uniform magnetic field including the spin-orbit interactions. The magnetic impurity acts as a spin-dependent $δ$-potential for electrons and results in gaps in the energy spectrum, consequently suppresses the oscillation of the persistent currents. The competition between the Zeeman splittings and the $s$-$d$ exchange interaction leads to a transition of the electron ground state in the ring. The interplay between the periodic potential induced by the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions and the $δ$-potential induced by the magnetic impurity leads to significant variation in the energy spectrum, charge density distribution, and persistent currents of electrons in the ring.

Spin states and persistent currents in mesoscopic rings: spin-orbit interactions

We investigate theoretically electron spin states in one dimensional (1D) and two dimensional (2D) hard-wall mesoscopic rings in the presence of both the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (DSOI) in a perpendicular magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the RSOI alone is mathematically equivalent to that of the DSOI alone using an SU(2) spin rotation transformation. Our theoretical results show that the interplay between the RSOI and DSOI results in an effective periodic potential, which consequently leads to gaps in the energy spectrum. This periodic potential also weakens and smoothens the oscillations of the persistent charge current (CC) and spin current (SC) and results in the localization of electrons. For a 2D ring with a finite width, higher radial modes destroy the periodic oscillations of persistent currents.

Two-dimensional Classical Wigner Crystal: Elliptical Confining Potential

We investigate theoretically the ground-state configurations of two-dimensional charged-particle systems with an elliptical hard-wall boundary and their vibrational eigenmodes. The systems exhibit a series of structural transitions, finally changing from a zigzag structure to a one-dimensional Coulomb chain, as the eccentricity of the elliptical hard-wall boundary is increased.

Interplay between s-d exchange interaction and Rashba effect: spin-polarized transport

We investigate the spin-polarized transport properties of a two-dimensional electron gas in a n-type diluted magnetic narrow gap semiconductor quantum well subjected to a perpendicular magnetic and electric field. Interesting beating patterns in the magneto resistance are found which can be tuned significantly by varying the electric field. A resonant enhancement of spin-polarized current is found which is induced by the competition between the s-d exchange interaction and the Rashba effect [Y. A. Bychkov and E. I. Rashba, J. Phys. C 17, 6039 (1984)].

Nonlinear Rashba Model and Spin Relaxation in Quantum Wells

We find that the Rashba spin splitting is intrinsically a nonlinear function of the momentum, and the linear Rasha model may overestimate it significantly, especially in narrow-gap materials. A nonlinear Rashba model is proposed, which is in good agreement with the numerical results from the eight-band kp theory. Using this model, we find pronounced suppression of the D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation rate at large electron densities, and a non-monotonic dependence of the resonance peak position of electron spin lifetime on the electron density in [111]-oriented quantum wells, both in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of the linear Rashba model.

Rashba spin splitting in biased semiconductor quantum wells

Rashba spin splitting (RSS) in biased semiconductor quantum wells is investigated theoretically based on the eight-band envelope function model. We find that at large wave vectors, RSS is both nonmonotonic and anisotropic as a function of in-plane wave vector, in contrast to the widely used linear and isotropic model. We derive an analytical expression for RSS, which can correctly reproduce such nonmonotonic behavior at large wave vectors. We also investigate numerically the dependence of RSS on the various band parameters and find that RSS increases with decreasing band gap and subband index, increasing valence band offset, external electric field, and well width. Our analytical expression for RSS provides a satisfactory explanation to all these features.

Spin-dependent tunneling through a symmetric semiconductor barrier: the Dresselhaus effect

Spin-dependent tunneling through a symmetric semiconductor barrier is studied including the k^3 Dresselhaus effect. The spin-dependent transmission of electron can be obtained analytically. By comparing with previous work(Phys. Rev. B 67. R201304 (2003) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 93. 056601 (2004)), it is shown that the spin polarization and interface current are changed significantly by including the off-diagonal elements in the current operator, and can be enhanced considerably by the Dresselhaus effect in the contact regions.

Spin-polarized transport in a lateral two-dimensional diluted magnetic semiconductor electron gas

The transport property of a lateral two-dimensional diluted magnetic semiconductor electron gas under a spatially periodic magnetic field is investigated theoretically. We find that the electron Fermi velocity along the modulation direction is highly spin-dependent even if the spin polarization of the carrier population is negligibly small. It turns out that this spin-polarized Fermi velocity alone can lead to a strong spin polarization of the current, which is still robust against the energy broadening effect induced by the impurity scattering.

Oscillating magnetoresistance in diluted magnetic semiconductor barrier structures

Ballistic spin polarized transport through diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) single and double barrier structures is investigated theoretically using a two-component model. The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of the system exhibits oscillating behavior when the magnetic field are varied. An interesting beat pattern in the TMR and spin polarization is found for different NMS/DMS double barrier structures which arises from an interplay between the spin-up and spin-down electron channels which are splitted by the s-d exchange interaction.

Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices: the effect of the giant Zeeman splitting

Longitudinal spin transport in diluted magnetic semiconductor superlattices is investigated theoretically. The longitudinal magnetoconductivity (MC) in such systems exhibits an oscillating behavior as function of an external magnetic field. In the weak magnetic field region the giant Zeeman splitting plays a dominant role which leads to a large negative magnetoconductivity. In the strong magnetic field region the MC exhibits deep dips with increasing magnetic field. The oscillating behavior is attributed to the interplay between the discrete Landau levels and the Fermi surface. The decrease of the MC at low magnetic field is caused by the $s-d$ exchange interaction between the electron in the conduction band and the magnetic ions.
