High brightness fully coherent X-ray amplifier seeded by a free-electron laser oscillator

X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO) is expected to be a cutting edge tool for fully coherent X-ray laser generation, and undulator taper technique is well-known for considerably increasing the efficiency of free-electron lasers (FELs). In order to combine the advantages of these two schemes, FEL amplifier seeded by XFELO is proposed by simply using a chirped electron beam. With the right choice of the beam parameters, the bunch tail is within the gain bandwidth of XFELO, and lase to saturation, which will be served as a seeding for further amplification. Meanwhile, the bunch head which is outside the gain bandwidth of XFELO, is preserved and used in the following FEL amplifier. It is found that the natural "double-horn" beam current as well as residual energy chirp from chicane compressor are quite suitable for the new scheme. Inheriting the advantages from XFELO seeding and undulator tapering, it is feasible to generate nearly terawatt level, fully coherent X-ray pulses with unprecedented shot-to-shot stability, which might open up new scientific opportunities in various research fields.

Large Linear Multi-output Gaussian Process Learning

Gaussian processes (GPs), or distributions over arbitrary functions in a continuous domain, can be generalized to the multi-output case: a linear model of coregionalization (LMC) is one approach. LMCs estimate and exploit correlations across the multiple outputs. While model estimation can be performed efficiently for single-output GPs, these assume stationarity, but in the multi-output case the cross-covariance interaction is not stationary. We propose Large Linear GP (LLGP), which circumvents the need for stationarity by inducing structure in the LMC kernel through a common grid of inputs shared between outputs, enabling optimization of GP hyperparameters for multi-dimensional outputs and low-dimensional inputs. When applied to synthetic two-dimensional and real time series data, we find our theoretical improvement relative to the current solutions for multi-output GPs is realized with LLGP reducing training time while improving or maintaining predictive mean accuracy. Moreover, by using a direct likelihood approximation rather than a variational one, model confidence estimates are significantly improved.

Systematical design and three-dimensional simulation of X-ray FEL oscillator for Shanghai Coherent Light Facility

Shanghai Coherent Light Facility (SCLF) is a quasi-CW hard X-ray free electron laser user facility which is recently proposed. Due to the high repetition rate, high quality electron beams, it is straightforward to consider an X-ray free electron laser oscillator (XFELO) operation for SCLF. The main processes for XFELO design, and parameters optimization of the undulator, X-ray cavity and electron beam are described. The first three-dimensional X-ray crystal Bragg diffraction code, named BRIGHT is built, which collaborates closely with GENESIS and OPC for numerical simulations of XFELO. The XFELO performances of SCLF is investigated and optimized by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation.

Proactive Eavesdropping via Jamming over HARQ-Based Communications

This paper studies the wireless surveillance of a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) based suspicious communication link over Rayleigh fading channels. We propose a proactive eavesdropping approach, where a half-duplex monitor can opportunistically jam the suspicious link to exploit its potential retransmissions for overhearing more efficiently. In particular, we consider that the suspicious link uses at most two HARQ rounds for transmitting the same data packet, and we focus on two cases without and with HARQ combining at the monitor receiver. In both cases, we aim to maximize the successful eavesdropping probability at the monitor, by adaptively allocating the jamming power in the first HARQ round according to fading channel conditions, subject to an average jamming power constraint. For both cases, we show that the optimal jamming power allocation follows a threshold-based policy, and the monitor jams with constant power when the eavesdropping channel gain is less than the threshold. Numerical results show that the proposed proactive eavesdropping scheme achieves higher successful eavesdropping probability than the conventional passive eavesdropping, and HARQ combining can help further improve the eavesdropping performance.

Conditional Belief, Knowledge and Probability

A natural way to represent beliefs and the process of updating beliefs is presented by Bayesian probability theory, where belief of an agent a in P can be interpreted as a considering that P is more probable than not P. This paper attempts to get at the core logical notion underlying this. The paper presents a sound and complete neighbourhood logic for conditional belief and knowledge, and traces the connections with probabilistic logics of belief and knowledge. The key notion in this paper is that of an agent a believing P conditionally on having information Q, where it is assumed that Q is compatible with what a knows. Conditional neighbourhood logic can be viewed as a core system for reasoning about subjective plausibility that is not yet committed to an interpretation in terms of numerical probability. Indeed, every weighted Kripke model gives rise to a conditional neighbourhood model, but not vice versa. We show that our calculus for conditional neighbourhood logic is sound but not complete for weighted Kripke models. Next, we show how to extend the calculus to get completeness for the class of weighted Kripke models. Neighbourhood models for conditional belief are closed under model restriction (public announcement update), while earlier neighbourhood models for belief as `willingness to bet' were not. Therefore the logic we present improves on earlier neighbourhood logics for belief and knowledge. We present complete calculi for public announcement and for publicly revealing the truth value of propositions using reduction axioms. The reductions show that adding these announcement operators to the language does not increase expressive power.

Bandwidth broadening of X-ray free electron laser with the natural gradient of planar undulator

Besides the target to pursue the narrow bandwidth X-ray pulses, the large bandwidth free-electron laser pulses are also strongly demanded to satisfy a wide range of scientific user experiments. In this paper, using the transversely tilt beam enabled by deflecting cavity and/or corrugated structure, the potential of large bandwidth X-ray free-electron lasers generation with the natural gradient of the planar undulator are discussed. Theoretical predictions and numerical simulations demonstrated that X-ray bandwidth exceeding 5% can be observed with the optimized free-electron laser parameters.

Proposals for gain cascading in single-pass of a free-electron laser oscillator

The low-gain free-electron laser (FEL) oscillators are cutting-edge tools to produce fully coherent radiation in the spectral region from terahertz to vacuum ultraviolet, and potentially in hard X-ray. In this paper, it is proposed to utilize an FEL oscillator with multi-stage undulators to enable gain cascading in a single-pass, making it possible to achieve shorter single pulse lengths, higher peak power, and even higher pulse energy than classical FEL oscillator. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations in the infrared and hard X-ray regions show that our proposal is effective.

On the Design of MAC Protocol and Transmission Scheduling for Internet of Things

With the ubiquitous sensing enabled by wireless sensor network technologies, Internet of Things (IoT) is developed to many areas of modern day living. The inexpensive IoT devices and platforms capable of wireless communications enable the ability to measure, infer and understand environmental indicators, from delicate ecologies and natural resources to urban environments. In this paper, we firstly investigate a scalable multimode-based MAC protocol, IoT-MAC, which consists of a channel contention period and a data transmission period, to reduce contention of channel access due to coexist of many IoT devices. Secondly, we study a data transmission scheduling algorithm to maximise data collection under the constraints of radio link quality and remaining energy of the IoT node, while ensuring a fair access to the radio channel. To study the performance of data reception rate, packet loss rate and latency, we evaluate the IoT-MAC and scheduling algorithm with varying data rate and different network scale.

WES - Weihai Echelle Spectrograph

The Weihai Echelle Spectrograph (WES) is the first fiber-fed echelle spectrograph for astronomical observation in China. It is primarily used for chemical abundance and asteroseismology studies of nearby bright stars, as well as radial velocity detections for exoplanets. The optical design of WES is based on the widely demonstrated and well-established white-pupil concept. We describe the WES in detail and present some examples of its performance. A single exposure echelle image covers the spectral region 371-1,100 nm in 107 spectral orders over the rectangular CCD. The spectral resolution $R=λ/Δλ$ changes from 40,600 to 57,000 through adjusting the entrance slit width from full to 2.2 pixels sampling at the fiber-exit. The limiting magnitude scales to $V=8$ with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of more than 100 in $V$ for an hour exposure, at the spectral resolution R$\approx$40,000 in the median seeing of 1.7$^{\prime\prime}$ at Weihai Observatory (WHO) for the 1-meter telescope. The radial velocity (RV) measurement accuracy of WES is estimated to be $<$10 m/s in 10 months (302 days) and better than 15 m/s in 4.4 years (1,617 days) in the recent data processing.

A Simplified Model for Fast Optimization of Free-Electron Laser Oscillator

A simplified theoretical model for free-electron laser oscillator (FELO) simulation which reserves the main physics is proposed. In stead of using traditional macro particles sampling method, the theoretical model takes advantages of low gain theory to calculate the optical power single-pass gain in the undulator analytically, and some reasonable approximations are made to simplify the calculation of power growth in the cavity. The theoretical analysis of single-pass gain, power growth, time-dependent laser profile evolution and cavity desynchronism are accomplished more efficiently. We present the results of infrared wavelength FELO and X-ray FELO with the new model. The results is checked by simulation with GENESIS and OPC which demonstrates the validity of the theoretical model.

Phase diagram and topological phases in the triangular lattice Kitaev-Hubbard model

We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with spin-dependent Kitaev-like hopping. Using the variational cluster approach, we identify five phases: a metallic phase, a non-coplanar chiral magnetic order, a $120^\circ$ magnetic order, a nonmagnetic insulator (NMI), and an interacting Chern insulator (CI) with a nonzero Chern number. The transition from CI to NMI is characterized by the change of the charge gap from an indirect band gap to a direct Mott gap. Based on the slave-rotor mean-field theory, the NMI phase is further suggested to be a gapless Mott insulator with a spinon Fermi surface or a fractionalized CI with nontrivial spinon topology, depending on the strength of Kitaev-like hopping. Our work highlights the rising field that interesting phases emerge from the interplay of band topology and Mott physics.

SenseFlow: An Experimental Study for Tracking People

The main challenges in large-scale people tracking are the recognition of people density in a specific area and tracking the people flow path. To address these challenges, we present SenseFlow, a lightweight people tracking system. SenseFlow utilises off-the-shelf devices which sniff probe requests periodically polled by user's smartphones in a passive manner. We demonstrate the feasibility of SenseFlow by building a proof-of-concept prototype and undertaking extensive evaluations in real-world settings. We deploy the system in one laboratory to study office hours of researchers, a crowded public area in city to evaluate the scalability and performance "in the wild", and four classrooms in the university to monitor the number of students. We also evaluate SenseFlow with varying walking speeds and different models of smartphones to investigate the people flow tracking performance.

Production of rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in an optically-plugged magnetic quadrupole trap

We have experimentally produced rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in an optically-plugged magnetic quadrupole (OPQ) trap. A far blue-detuned focused laser beam with a wavelength of 532 nm is plugged in the center of the magnetic quadrupole trap to increase the number of trapped atoms and suppress the heating. A radio frequency (RF) evaporative cooling in the magneto-optical hybrid trap is applied to decrease the atom temperature into degeneracy. The atom number of the condensate is $1.2(0.4)\times10^5$ and the temperature is below 100 nK. We have also studied characteristic behaviors of the condensate, such as phase space density (PSD), condensate fraction and anisotropic expansion.

Approaching quantum-limited amplification with large gain catalyzed by hybrid nonlinear media in cavity optomechanics

Amplifier is at the heart of almost all experiment carrying out the precise measurement of a weak signal. An idea amplifier should have large gain and minimum added noise simultaneously. Here, we consider the quantum measurement properties of a hybrid nonlinear cavity with the Kerr and OPA nonlinear media to amplify an input signal. We show that our hybrid-nonlinear-cavity amplifier has large gain in the single-value stable regime and achieves quantum limit unconditionally.

Fair Scheduling for Data Collection in Mobile Sensor Networks with Energy Harvesting

We consider the problem of data collection from a continental-scale network of energy harvesting sensors, applied to tracking mobile assets in rural environments. Our application constraints favour a highly asymmetric solution, with heavily duty-cycled sensor nodes communicating with powered base stations. We study a novel scheduling optimisation problem for energy harvesting mobile sensor network, that maximises the amount of collected data under the constraints of radio link quality and energy harvesting efficiency, while ensuring a fair data reception. We show that the problem is NP-complete and propose a heuristic algorithm to approximate the optimal scheduling solution in polynomial time. Moreover, our algorithm is flexible in handling progressive energy harvesting events, such as with solar panels, or opportunistic and bursty events, such as with Wireless Power Transfer. We use empirical link quality data, solar energy, and WPT efficiency to evaluate the proposed algorithm in extensive simulations and compare its performance to state-of-the-art. We show that our algorithm achieves high data reception rates, under different fairness and node lifetime constraints.

The active W UMa type binary star V781 Tau revisited

In this paper, new determined BVR_cI_c light curves and radial velocities of V781 Tau are presented. By analyzing the light curves and radial velocities simultaneously, we found that V781 Tau is a W-subtype medium contact binary star with a mass ratio of q=2.207+-0.005 and a contact degree of f=21.6(+-1.0)%. The difference between the two light maxima was explained by a dark spot on the less massive primary component. The orbital period change of V781 Tau was also investigated. A secular decrease at a rate of $-6.01(+-2.28)*10^{-8} d/yr and a cyclic modulation with a period of 44.8+-5.7 yr and an amplitude of 0.0064+-0.0011 day were discovered. The continuous period decrease may be caused by angular momentum loss due to magnetic stellar wind. Applegate mechanism failed to explain the cyclic modulation. It is highly possible that the cyclic oscillation is the result of the light travel time effect by a third companion.

Wakefield issue and its impact on X-ray photon pulse in the SXFEL test facility

Besides the designed beam acceleration, the energy of electrons changed by the longitudinal wakefields in a real free-electron laser (FEL) facility, which may degrade FEL performances from the theoretical expectation. In this paper, with the help of simulation codes, the wakefields induced beam energy loss in the sophisticated undulator section is calculated for Shanghai soft X-ray FEL, which is a two-stage seeded FEL test facility. While the 1st stage 44 nm FEL output is almost not affected by the wakefields, it is found that a beam energy loss about 0.8 MeV degrades the peak brightness of the 2nd stage 8.8 nm FEL by a factor of 1.6, which however can be compensated by a magnetic field fine tuning of each undulator segment.
