On quasinormal frequencies of black hole perturbations with an external source

In the study of perturbations around black hole configurations, whether an external source can influence the perturbation behavior is an interesting topic to investigate. When the source acts as an initial pulse, it is intuitively acceptable that the existing quasinormal frequencies will remain unchanged. However, the confirmation of such an intuition is not trivial for the rotating black hole, since the eigenvalues in the radial and angular parts of the master equations are coupled. We show that for the rotating black holes, a moderate source term in the master equation in the Laplace s-domain does not modify the quasinormal modes. Furthermore, we generalize our discussions to the case where the external source serves as a driving force. Different from an initial pulse, an external source may further drive the system to experience new perturbation modes. To be specific, novel dissipative singularities might be brought into existence and enrich the pole structure. This is a physically relevant scenario, due to its possible implication in modified gravity. Our arguments are based on exploring the pole structure of the solution in the Laplace s-domain with the presence of the external source. The analytical analyses are verified numerically by solving the inhomogeneous differential equation and extracting the dominant complex frequencies by employing the Prony method.

Spherically symmetric static black holes in Einstein-aether theory

In this paper, we systematically study spherically symmetric static spacetimes in the framework of Einstein-aether theory, and pay particular attention to the existence of black holes (BHs). In the present studies we first clarify several subtle issues. In particular, we find that, out of the five non-trivial field equations, only three are independent, so the problem is well-posed, as now generically there are only three unknown functions, {$F(r), B(r), A(r)$, where $F$ and $B$ are metric coefficients, and $A$ describes the aether field.} In addition, the two second-order differential equations for $A$ and $F$ are independent of $B$, and once they are found, $B$ is given simply by an algebraic expression of $F,\; A$ and their derivatives. To simplify the problem further, we explore the symmetry of field redefinitions, and work first with the redefined metric and aether field, and then obtain the physical ones by the inverse transformations. These clarifications significantly simplify the computational labor, which is important, as the problem is highly involved mathematically. In fact, it is exactly because of these, we find various numerical BH solutions with an accuracy that is at least two orders higher than previous ones. More important, these BH solutions are the only ones that satisfy the self-consistent conditions and meantime are consistent with all the observational constraints obtained so far. The locations of universal horizons are also identified, together with several other observationally interesting quantities, such as the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO), the ISCO frequency, and the maximum redshift $z_{max}$ of a photon emitted by a source orbiting the ISCO. All of these quantities are found to be quite close to their relativistic limits.

No static regular black holes in Einstein-complex-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this brief report, we investigate the existence of 4-dimensional static spherically symmetric black holes (BHs) in the Einstein-complex-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (EcsGB) gravity with an arbitrary potential $V(ϕ)$ and a coupling $f(ϕ)$ between the scalar field $ϕ$ and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. We find that static regular BH solutions with complex scalar hairs do not exist. This conclusion does not depend on the coupling between the GB term and the scalar field, nor on the scalar potential $V(ϕ)$ and the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$ (which can be either positive or negative), as longer as the scalar field remains complex and is regular across the horizon.

Cosmic evolution of dark energy in a generalized Rastall gravity

In this work, we propose a scheme for cosmic evolution in a generalized Rastall gravity. In our approach, the role of dark energy is taken by the non-conserved sector of the stress energy-momentum tensor. The resultant cosmic evolution is found to naturally consists of three stages, namely, radiation dominated, ordinary matter dominated, as well as dark energy and dark matter dominated eras. Furthermore, for the present model, it is demonstrated that the eventual fate of the Universe is mostly insensitive to the initial conditions, in contrast to the standard $Λ$CDM model. In particular, the solution displays the properties of a dynamic attractor, which is reminiscent of quintessence and k-essence models. Subsequently, the cosmic coincidence problem is averted. The amount of deviation from a conserved stress energy-momentum tensor is shown to be more remarkable during the period when the dark energy evolves more rapidly. On the other hand, the conservation law is largely restored for the infinite past and future. The implications of the present approach are addressed.

Tail wavelets in the merger of binary compact objects

We present a model for tail wavelets, a phenomenon also known as "echo" in the literature. The tail wavelet may appear in signal reconnaissances in the merger of binary compact objects, including black holes and neutron stars. We show that the dark matter surrounding the compact objects lead to the speculated tail wavelet following the main gravitational wave (GW). We demonstrate that the radiation pressure of the main wave is fully capable of pushing away the the surrounding matter to some altitude, and splashing down of the matter excites the tail wavelet after ring down of the main wave. We illustrate this idea in a simplified model, where numerical estimations are carried out concerning the specific distribution of the dark matter outside the black hole horizon and the threshold values in accordance with observations. We study the full back reaction of the surrounding dark matter to the metric, and find that the effect is insignificant to the tail wavelets. We find the fine difference between the tail wavelets of a dressed black hole and a bare one. We demonstrate that the tail wavelet can be a natural phenomenon in frame of general relativity, without invoking any modified gravities or quantum effects.

Dirac quasinormal modes of power-Maxwell charged black holes in Rastall gravity

In this paper, we study the quasinormal modes of the massless Dirac field for charged black holes in Rastall gravity. The spherically symmetric black hole solutions in question are characterized by the presence of a power-Maxwell field, surrounded by the quintessence fluid. The calculations are carried out by employing the WKB approximations up to the thirteenth order, as well as the matrix method. The temporal evolution of the quasinormal modes is investigated by using the finite difference method. Through numerical simulations, the properties of the quasinormal frequencies are analyzed, including those for the extremal black holes. Among others, we explore the case of a second type of extremal black holes regarding the Nariai solution, where the cosmical and event horizon coincide. The results obtained by the WKB approaches are found to be mostly consistent with those by the matrix method. It is demonstrated that the black hole solutions for Rastall gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes are equivalent to those in Einstein gravity, featured by different asymptotical spacetime properties. As one of its possible consequences, we also investigate the behavior of the late-time tails of quasinormal models in the present model. It is found that the asymptotical behavior of the late-time tails of quasinormal modes in Rastall theory is governed by the asymptotical properties of the spacetimes of their counterparts in Einstein gravity.

On nonlinearity in hydrodynamic response to the initial geometry in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

In the context of event-by-event hydrodynamic description, we analyze the implications of two models characterized by distinct initial conditions. The initial energy density of the first model adopts a Gaussian-type distribution, while those of the second one are features by high energy peripheral tubes. We calibrate the initial conditions of both models so that their initial probability distribution of eccentricity are mostly identical. Subsequently, the resultant scaled probability distributions of collective flow and the correlations between flow harmonic and eccentricity coefficients are investigated. Besides, the calculations are carried out for particle correlations regarding the symmetric cumulant, mixed harmonics, and nonlinear response coefficients. Although the resultant two-particle correlations possess similar shapes, numerical calculations indicate a subtle difference between the two models. To be specific, the difference resides in more detailed observables such as the probability distributions of elliptic flow as well as Pearson correlation coefficient regarding higher-order harmonics. We discuss several essential aspects concerning the linearity and nonlinearity between initial eccentricities and final state anisotropies. Further implications are addressed.

Instability and phase transitions of a rotating black hole in the presence of perfect fluid dark matter

In this paper, we study the thermodynamic features of a rotating black hole surrounded by perfect fluid dark matter. We analyze the critical behavior of the black hole by considering the known relationship between pressure and cosmological constant. We show that the black hole admits a first order phase transition and, both rotation and perfect fluid dark matter parameters have a significant impact on the critical quantities. We also introduce a new ad hoc pressure related to the perfect fluid dark matter and find a first order van der Waals like phase transition. In addition, using the sixth order WKB method, we investigate the massless scalar quasinormal modes (QNMs) for the static spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by dark matter. Using the finite difference scheme, the dynamical evolution of the QNMs is also discussed for different values of angular momentum and overtone parameters.

Constraints of general screened modified gravities from comprehensive analysis of binary pulsars

Testing gravity by binary pulsars nowadays becomes a key issue. Screened modified gravity is a kind of scalar-tensor theory with screening mechanism in order to satisfy the tight Solar System tests. In this paper, we investigate how the screening mechanism affects the orbital dynamics of binary pulsars, and calculate in detail the five post-Keplerian (PK) parameters in this theory. These parameters differ from those of general relativity (GR), and the differences are quantified by the scalar charges, which lead to the dipole radiation in this theory. We combine the observables of PK parameters for the ten binary pulsars, respectively, to place the constraints on the scalar charges and possible deviations from GR. The dipole radiation in the neutron star (NS) - white dwarf (WD) binaries leads to more stringent constraints on deviations from GR. The most constraining systems for the scalar charges of NS and WD are PSR~B1913$+$16 and PSR~J1738$+$0333, respectively. The results of all tests exclude significant strong-field deviations and show good agreement with GR.

Gyroscope precession frequency analysis of a five dimensional charged rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole

In this paper, we study the spin precession frequency of a test gyroscope attached to a stationary observer in the five dimensional rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole (RKKBH). We derive the conditions under which the test gyroscope moves along a timelike trajectory in this geometry and the regions where the spin precession frequency diverges. The magnitude of the gyroscope precession frequency around KK black hole diverges at two spatial locations outside the event horizon. However in the static case, the behavior of the Lense Thirring frequency of a gyroscope around KK black hole is much like an ordinary Schwarzschild black hole. Since a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole is a generalization of Kerr-Newman black hole, we present two mass-independent schemes to distinguish these two spacetimes.

Centrality dependence of multiplicity fluctuations from a hydrodynamical approach

As one of the possible signals for the whereabouts of the critical point on the QCD phase diagram, recently, the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions have aroused much attention. It is a crucial observable of the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In this work, we investigate the centrality dependence of the multiplicity fluctuations regarding the recent measurements from STAR Collaboration. By employing a hydrodynamical approach, the present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the phenomenon. To be specific, in addition to the thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface, the model is focused on the properties of the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations. It is understood that the real signal of the critical point can only be obtained after appropriately subtracting the background, the latter is investigated in the present work. Besides the experimental data, our results are also compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas, as well as transport models.

Hydrodynamic results on multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions

Multiplicity fluctuations are one of the most crucial observables in the Beam Energy Scan program of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. It is understood that they can be utilized to probe the whereabouts of the critical point on the phase diagram of the QCD matter. However, a significant portion of these fluctuations is, apart from that related to the QCD phase transition, attributed to the other origins, which we refer to as "noncritical" ones. The present study is dedicated to the noncritical aspects of the multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions. In particular, we focus on those of dynamical origin, such as the hydrodynamic expansion of the system and the event-by-event initial fluctuations, in addition to the usual thermal fluctuations, finite volume corrections, and resonance decay at the freeze-out surface. The obtained results are compared to those of the hadronic resonance gas model as well as to the experimental data.

Gravitational waveforms and radiation powers of the triple system PSR J0337+1715 in modified theories of gravity

In this paper, we study the gravitational waveforms, polarizations and radiation powers of the first relativistic triple systems PSR J0337 + 1715, observed in 2014, by using the post-Newtonian approximations to their lowest order. Although they cannot be observed either by current or next generation of the detectors, they do provide useful information to test different theories of gravity. In particular, we carry out the studies in three different theories, general relativity (GR), Brans-Dicke (BD) gravity, and Einstein-aether ($æ$) theory. The tensor modes $h_{+}$ and $h_{\times}$ exist in all three theories and have almost equal amplitudes. Their frequencies are all peaked at two locations, $ f^{(+, \times)}_1 \simeq 0.0686656 μ$Hz and $ f^{(+, \times)}_2 \simeq 14.2138 μ$Hz, which are about twice of the outer and inner orbital frequencies of the triple system, as predicted in GR. In $æ$-theory, all the six polarization modes are different from zero, but the breathing $h_b$ and longitudinal $h_L$ modes are not independent and also peaked at two frequencies, but at the frequencies, $ f^{(b, L, æ)}_{1} \simeq 0.0457771 μ$Hz and $f^{(b, L, æ)}_{ 2} \simeq 7.09545 μ$Hz. A similar phenomenon is also observed in BD gravity, in which only the three modes $h_{+},\; h_{\times}$ and $h_{b}$ exit. We also study the radiation powers, and find that the quadrupole emission in each of the three theories has almost the same amplitude, but the dipole emission can be as big as the quadrupole emission in $æ$-theory. This can provide a very promising window to obtain severe constraints on $æ$-theory by the multi-band gravitational wave astronomy.

Deeply Matting-based Dual Generative Adversarial Network for Image and Document Label Supervision

Although many methods have been proposed to deal with nature image super-resolution (SR) and get impressive performance, the text images SR is not good due to their ignorance of document images. In this paper, we propose a matting-based dual generative adversarial network (mdGAN) for document image SR. Firstly, the input image is decomposed into document text, foreground and background layers using deep image matting. Then two parallel branches are constructed to recover text boundary information and color information respectively. Furthermore, in order to improve the restoration accuracy of characters in output image, we use the input image's corresponding ground truth text label as extra supervise information to refine the two-branch networks during training. Experiments on real text images demonstrate that our method outperforms several state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

On quasinormal modes for the Vaidya metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime

In this work, we present a numerical scheme to study the quasinormal modes of the time-dependent Vaidya black hole metric in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The proposed algorithm is primarily based on a generalized matrix method for quasinormal modes. The main feature of the present approach is that the quasinormal frequency, as a function of time, is obtained by a generalized secular equation and therefore a satisfactory degree of precision is achieved. The implications of the results are discussed.

On the boundary condition and related instability in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

In this work, we explore various relevant aspects of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics regarding Burger's equation. The stability, precision, and efficiency of the algorithm are investigated in terms of different implementations. In particular, we argue that the boundary condition plays an essential role in the stability of numerical implementation. Besides, the issue is shown to be closely associated with the initial particle distribution and the interpolation scheme. Among others, we introduce an interpolation scheme termed symmetrized finite particle method. The main advantage of the scheme is that its implementation does not involve any derivative of the kernel function. Concerning the equation of motion, the calculations are carried out using two distinct scenarios where the particles are chosen to be either stationary or dynamically evolved. The obtained results are compared with those obtained by using the standard finite difference method for spatial derivatives. Our numerical results indicate subtle differences between different schemes regarding the choice of boundary condition. In particular, a novel type of instability is observed where the regular distribution is compromised as the particles start to traverse each other. Implications and further discussions of the present study are also addressed.

Neutral regular black hole solution in generalized Rastall gravity

In this work, we investigate the static, spherically symmetric regular black hole solutions in a generalized Rastall gravity. In particular, the prescription of Rastall gravity implies that the present approach does not necessarily involve nonlinear electrodynamics. Subsequently, the resulting regular black hole solution can be electrically and magnetically neutral. The general properties of the regular black hole solutions are explored. Moreover, specific solutions are derived and discussed, particularly regarding the parameter related to the degree of violation of energy-momentum conservation in Rastall theory.

Thermodynamical consistency of quasiparticle model at finite baryon density

In this work, we revisit the thermodynamical self-consistency of the quasiparticle model with the finite baryon chemical potential adjusted to lattice QCD calculations. Here, we investigate the possibility that the effective quasiparticle mass is also a function of its momentum, $k$, in addition to temperature $T$ and chemical potential $μ$. It is found that the thermodynamic consistency can be expressed in terms of an integro-differential equation concerning $k$, $T$, and $μ$. We further discuss two special solutions, both can be viewed as sufficient condition for the thermodynamical consistency, while expressed in terms of a particle differential equation. The first case is shown to be equivalent to those previously discussed by Peshier et al. The second one, obtained through an ad hoc assumption, is an intrinsically different solution where the particle mass is momentum dependent. These equations can be solved by using boundary condition determined by the lattice QCD data at vanishing baryon chemical potential. By numerical calculations, we show that both solutions can reasonably reproduce the recent lattice QCD results of the Wuppertal-Budapest and HotQCD Collaborations, and in particular, those concerning finite baryon density. Possible implications are discussed.
