Binomial Self-compensation for Motion Error in Dynamic 3D Scanning

Phase shifting profilometry (PSP) is favored in high-precision 3D scanning due to its high accuracy, robustness, and pixel-wise property. However, a fundamental assumption of PSP that the object should remain static is violated in dynamic measurement, making PSP susceptible to object moving, resulting in ripple-like errors in the point clouds. We propose a pixel-wise and frame-wise loopable binomial self-compensation (BSC) algorithm to effectively and flexibly eliminate motion error in the four-step PSP. Our mathematical model demonstrates that by summing successive motion-affected phase frames weighted by binomial coefficients, motion error exponentially diminishes as the binomial order increases, accomplishing automatic error compensation through the motion-affected phase sequence, without the assistance of any intermediate variable. Extensive experiments show that our BSC outperforms the existing methods in reducing motion error, while achieving a depth map frame rate equal to the camera's acquisition rate (90 fps), enabling high-accuracy 3D reconstruction with a quasi-single-shot frame rate.

Att2CPC: Attention-Guided Lossy Attribute Compression of Point Clouds

With the great progress of 3D sensing and acquisition technology, the volume of point cloud data has grown dramatically, which urges the development of efficient point cloud compression methods. In this paper, we focus on the task of learned lossy point cloud attribute compression (PCAC). We propose an efficient attention-based method for lossy compression of point cloud attributes leveraging on an autoencoder architecture. Specifically, at the encoding side, we conduct multiple downsampling to best exploit the local attribute patterns, in which effective External Cross Attention (ECA) is devised to hierarchically aggregate features by intergrating attributes and geometry contexts. At the decoding side, the attributes of the point cloud are progressively reconstructed based on the multi-scale representation and the zero-padding upsampling tactic. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to introduce attention mechanism to point-based lossy PCAC task. We verify the compression efficiency of our model on various sequences, including human body frames, sparse objects, and large-scale point cloud scenes. Experiments show that our method achieves an average improvement of 1.15 dB and 2.13 dB in BD-PSNR of Y channel and YUV channel, respectively, when comparing with the state-of-the-art point-based method Deep-PCAC. CKSP: Cross-species Knowledge Sharing and Preserving for Universal Animal Activity Recognition

Deep learning techniques are dominating automated animal activity recognition (AAR) tasks with wearable sensors due to their high performance on large-scale labelled data. However, current deep learning-based AAR models are trained solely on datasets of individual animal species, constraining their applicability in practice and performing poorly when training data are limited. In this study, we propose a one-for-many framework, dubbed Cross-species Knowledge Sharing and Preserving (CKSP), based on sensor data of diverse animal species. Given the coexistence of generic and species-specific behavioural patterns among different species, we design a Shared-Preserved Convolution (SPConv) module. This module assigns an individual low-rank convolutional layer to each species for extracting species-specific features and employs a shared full-rank convolutional layer to learn generic features, enabling the CKSP framework to learn inter-species complementarity and alleviating data limitations via increasing data diversity. Considering the training conflict arising from discrepancies in data distributions among species, we devise a Species-specific Batch Normalization (SBN) module, that involves multiple BN layers to separately fit the distributions of different species. To validate CKSP's effectiveness, experiments are performed on three public datasets from horses, sheep, and cattle, respectively. The results show that our approach remarkably boosts the classification performance compared to the baseline method (one-for-one framework) solely trained on individual-species data, with increments of 6.04%, 2.06%, and 3.66% in accuracy, and 10.33%, 3.67%, and 7.90% in F1-score for the horse, sheep, and cattle datasets, respectively. This proves the promising capabilities of our method in leveraging multi-species data to augment classification performance.

INSIDE: LLMs' Internal States Retain the Power of Hallucination Detection

Knowledge hallucination have raised widespread concerns for the security and reliability of deployed LLMs. Previous efforts in detecting hallucinations have been employed at logit-level uncertainty estimation or language-level self-consistency evaluation, where the semantic information is inevitably lost during the token-decoding procedure. Thus, we propose to explore the dense semantic information retained within LLMs' \textbf{IN}ternal \textbf{S}tates for halluc\textbf{I}nation \textbf{DE}tection (\textbf{INSIDE}). In particular, a simple yet effective \textbf{EigenScore} metric is proposed to better evaluate responses' self-consistency, which exploits the eigenvalues of responses' covariance matrix to measure the semantic consistency/diversity in the dense embedding space. Furthermore, from the perspective of self-consistent hallucination detection, a test time feature clipping approach is explored to truncate extreme activations in the internal states, which reduces overconfident generations and potentially benefits the detection of overconfident hallucinations. Extensive experiments and ablation studies are performed on several popular LLMs and question-answering (QA) benchmarks, showing the effectiveness of our proposal.

Interstitial anionic electrons involved superconductivity and T-linear resistivity behavior in electride La3In

Electrides are unique materials because of the existence of interstitial anionic electrons (IAEs). Due to these loosely bound IAEs and their strong interaction with the framework of cations, electrides can host superconductivity with rather high Tc, especially under high pressure, as predicted in theory. However, the experimental observations of superconductivity in electrides are very rare, let alone the detailed studies on intrinsic properties of single crystals. Here, we report the superconducting and normal-state properties of electride La3In single crystals. La3In shows a type-II superconductivity with Tc ~ 9.4 K and a T-linear resistivity in a wide temperature range. Experimental measurements and theoretical calculations suggest that the relatively high Tc could be ascribed to the high density of states around the Fermi level caused by short flat bands along R-M direction and the strong electron-phonon coupling, partially derived from the IAEs. Meanwhile, the T-linear resistivity may reflect the significant electronic correlation effect in this material. These findings will shed light on understanding the role of IAEs in superconductivity and open a promising way to explore high-temperature superconductors in electrides.

Dog-IQA: Standard-guided Zero-shot MLLM for Mix-grained Image Quality Assessment

Image quality assessment (IQA) serves as the golden standard for all models' performance in nearly all computer vision fields. However, it still suffers from poor out-of-distribution generalization ability and expensive training costs. To address these problems, we propose Dog-IQA, a standard-guided zero-shot mix-grained IQA method, which is training-free and utilizes the exceptional prior knowledge of multimodal large language models (MLLMs). To obtain accurate IQA scores, namely scores consistent with humans, we design an MLLM-based inference pipeline that imitates human experts. In detail, Dog-IQA applies two techniques. First, Dog-IQA objectively scores with specific standards that utilize MLLM's behavior pattern and minimize the influence of subjective factors. Second, Dog-IQA comprehensively takes local semantic objects and the whole image as input and aggregates their scores, leveraging local and global information. Our proposed Dog-IQA achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance compared with training-free methods, and competitive performance compared with training-based methods in cross-dataset scenarios. Our code will be available at https://github.com/Kai-Liu001/Dog-IQA.

Movable-Antenna Aided Secure Transmission for RIS-ISAC Systems

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems have the issue of secrecy leakage when using the ISAC waveforms for sensing, thus posing a potential risk for eavesdropping. To address this problem, we propose to employ movable antennas (MAs) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) performance of ISAC systems, where an eavesdropping target potentially wiretaps the signals transmitted by the base station (BS). To evaluate the synergistic performance gain provided by MAs and RIS, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the sum-rate of the users by jointly optimizing the transmit/receive beamformers of the BS, the reflection coefficients of the RIS, and the positions of MAs at communication users, subject to a minimum communication rate requirement for each user, a minimum radar sensing requirement, and a maximum secrecy leakage to the eavesdropping target. To solve this non-convex problem with highly coupled variables, a two-layer penalty-based algorithm is developed by updating the penalty parameter in the outer-layer iterations to achieve a trade-off between the optimality and feasibility of the solution. In the inner-layer iterations, the auxiliary variables are first obtained with semi-closed-form solutions using Lagrange duality. Then, the receive beamformer filter at the BS is optimized by solving a Rayleigh-quotient subproblem. Subsequently, the transmit beamformer matrix is obtained by solving a convex subproblem. Finally, the majorization-minimization (MM) algorithm is employed to optimize the RIS reflection coefficients and the positions of MAs. Extensive simulation results validate the considerable benefits of the proposed MAs-aided RIS-ISAC systems in enhancing security performance compared to traditional fixed position antenna (FPA)-based systems.

XCB: an effective contextual biasing approach to bias cross-lingual phrases in speech recognition

Contextualized ASR models have been demonstrated to effectively improve the recognition accuracy of uncommon phrases when a predefined phrase list is available. However, these models often struggle with bilingual settings, which are prevalent in code-switching speech recognition. In this study, we make the initial attempt to address this challenge by introducing a Cross-lingual Contextual Biasing(XCB) module. Specifically, we augment a pre-trained ASR model for the dominant language by integrating an auxiliary language biasing module and a supplementary language-specific loss, aimed at enhancing the recognition of phrases in the secondary language. Experimental results conducted on our in-house code-switching dataset have validated the efficacy of our approach, demonstrating significant improvements in the recognition of biasing phrases in the secondary language, even without any additional inference overhead. Additionally, our proposed system exhibits both efficiency and generalization when is applied by the unseen ASRU-2019 test set.

Diff-PCC: Diffusion-based Neural Compression for 3D Point Clouds

Stable diffusion networks have emerged as a groundbreaking development for their ability to produce realistic and detailed visual content. This characteristic renders them ideal decoders, capable of producing high-quality and aesthetically pleasing reconstructions. In this paper, we introduce the first diffusion-based point cloud compression method, dubbed Diff-PCC, to leverage the expressive power of the diffusion model for generative and aesthetically superior decoding. Different from the conventional autoencoder fashion, a dual-space latent representation is devised in this paper, in which a compressor composed of two independent encoding backbones is considered to extract expressive shape latents from distinct latent spaces. At the decoding side, a diffusion-based generator is devised to produce high-quality reconstructions by considering the shape latents as guidance to stochastically denoise the noisy point clouds. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed Diff-PCC achieves state-of-the-art compression performance (e.g., 7.711 dB BD-PSNR gains against the latest G-PCC standard at ultra-low bitrate) while attaining superior subjective quality. Source code will be made publicly available.

Microstructure-Dependent Particulate Filtration using Multifunctional Metallic Nanowire Foams

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the urgent need for the development of efficient, durable, reusable and recyclable filtration media for the deep-submicron size range. Here we demonstrate a multifunctional filtration platform using porous metallic nanowire foams that are efficient, robust, antimicrobial, and reusable, with the potential to further guard against multiple hazards. We have investigated the foam microstructures, detailing how the growth parameters influence the overall surface area and characteristic feature size, as well as the effects of the microstructures on the filtration performance. Nanogranules deposited on the nanowires during electrodeposition are found to greatly increase the surface area, up to 20 m$^{2}$/g. Surprisingly, in the high surface area regime, the overall surface area gained from the nanogranules has little correlation with the improvement in capture efficiency. However, nanowire density and diameter play a significant role in the capture efficiency of PM$_{0.3}$ particles, as do the surface roughness of the nanowire fibers and their characteristic feature sizes. Antimicrobial tests on the Cu foams show a >99.9995% inactivation efficiency after contacting the foams for 30 seconds. These results demonstrate promising directions to achieve a highly efficient multifunctional filtration platform with optimized microstructures.

An efficient text augmentation approach for contextualized Mandarin speech recognition

Although contextualized automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems are commonly used to improve the recognition of uncommon words, their effectiveness is hindered by the inherent limitations of speech-text data availability. To address this challenge, our study proposes to leverage extensive text-only datasets and contextualize pre-trained ASR models using a straightforward text-augmentation (TA) technique, all while keeping computational costs minimal. In particular, to contextualize a pre-trained CIF-based ASR, we construct a codebook using limited speech-text data. By utilizing a simple codebook lookup process, we convert available text-only data into latent text embeddings. These embeddings then enhance the inputs for the contextualized ASR. Our experiments on diverse Mandarin test sets demonstrate that our TA approach significantly boosts recognition performance. The top-performing system shows relative CER improvements of up to 30% on rare words and 15% across all words in general.

Correlated electrons of the flat band in charge density wave state of 4Hb-TaSexS2-x

Many intriguing quantum states of matter, such as unconventional superconductivity, magnetic phases and fractional quantum Hall physics, emergent from the spatially-correlated localized electrons in the flat band of solid materials. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we report the real-space investigation of correlated electrons in the flat band of superlattice 4Hb-TaSexS2-x. In contrast with the pristine 4Hb-TaS2, the selenium (Se) substitutions significantly affect the interfacial transfer of correlated electrons between the CDW states of 1T- and 1H-TaS2 layers, and contribute a real-space fractional electron-filling configurations with the distributed electron-filled and -void SoD clusters of 1T-layer. The site-specific STS spectra directly reveal their respective prominent spectra weight above EF and symmetric Mott-like spectra. In addition, the spatial distributions of these electron-filled SoDs in the 1T-layer of 4Hb-TaSe0.7S1.3 demonstrate different local short-range patterning, clearly indicating the complex neighboring interactions among the localized electrons in the flat band of 1T-layer. Our results not only provide an in-depth insight of correlated electrons in the flat CDW band, and provide a simple platform to manipulate the electron-correlation-related quantum states.

2DQuant: Low-bit Post-Training Quantization for Image Super-Resolution

Low-bit quantization has become widespread for compressing image super-resolution (SR) models for edge deployment, which allows advanced SR models to enjoy compact low-bit parameters and efficient integer/bitwise constructions for storage compression and inference acceleration, respectively. However, it is notorious that low-bit quantization degrades the accuracy of SR models compared to their full-precision (FP) counterparts. Despite several efforts to alleviate the degradation, the transformer-based SR model still suffers severe degradation due to its distinctive activation distribution. In this work, we present a dual-stage low-bit post-training quantization (PTQ) method for image super-resolution, namely 2DQuant, which achieves efficient and accurate SR under low-bit quantization. The proposed method first investigates the weight and activation and finds that the distribution is characterized by coexisting symmetry and asymmetry, long tails. Specifically, we propose Distribution-Oriented Bound Initialization (DOBI), using different searching strategies to search a coarse bound for quantizers. To obtain refined quantizer parameters, we further propose Distillation Quantization Calibration (DQC), which employs a distillation approach to make the quantized model learn from its FP counterpart. Through extensive experiments on different bits and scaling factors, the performance of DOBI can reach the state-of-the-art (SOTA) while after stage two, our method surpasses existing PTQ in both metrics and visual effects. 2DQuant gains an increase in PSNR as high as 4.52dB on Set5 (x2) compared with SOTA when quantized to 2-bit and enjoys a 3.60x compression ratio and 5.08x speedup ratio. Single-Phase L1$_{0}$-Ordered High Entropy Thin Films with High Magnetic Anisotropy

The vast high entropy alloy (HEA) composition space is promising for discovery of new material phases with unique properties. We explore the potential to achieve rare-earth-free high magnetic anisotropy materials in single-phase HEA thin films. Thin films of FeCoNiMnCu sputtered on thermally oxidized Si/SiO$_{2}$ substrates at room temperature are magnetically soft, with a coercivity on the order of 10 Oe. After post-deposition rapid thermal annealing (RTA), the films exhibit a single face-centered-cubic phase, with an almost 40-fold increase in coercivity. Inclusion of 50 at.% Pt in the film leads to ordering of a single L1$_{0}$ high entropy intermetallic phase after RTA, along with high magnetic anisotropy and 3 orders of magnitude coercivity increase. These results demonstrate a promising HEA approach to achieve high magnetic anisotropy materials using RTA.

Differentiable Model Scaling using Differentiable Topk

Over the past few years, as large language models have ushered in an era of intelligence emergence, there has been an intensified focus on scaling networks. Currently, many network architectures are designed manually, often resulting in sub-optimal configurations. Although Neural Architecture Search (NAS) methods have been proposed to automate this process, they suffer from low search efficiency. This study introduces Differentiable Model Scaling (DMS), increasing the efficiency for searching optimal width and depth in networks. DMS can model both width and depth in a direct and fully differentiable way, making it easy to optimize. We have evaluated our DMS across diverse tasks, ranging from vision tasks to NLP tasks and various network architectures, including CNNs and Transformers. Results consistently indicate that our DMS can find improved structures and outperforms state-of-the-art NAS methods. Specifically, for image classification on ImageNet, our DMS improves the top-1 accuracy of EfficientNet-B0 and Deit-Tiny by 1.4% and 0.6%, respectively, and outperforms the state-of-the-art zero-shot NAS method, ZiCo, by 1.3% while requiring only 0.4 GPU days for searching. For object detection on COCO, DMS improves the mAP of Yolo-v8-n by 2.0%. For language modeling, our pruned Llama-7B outperforms the prior method with lower perplexity and higher zero-shot classification accuracy. We will release our code in the future.

Learning-to-solve unit commitment based on few-shot physics-guided spatial-temporal graph convolution network

This letter proposes a few-shot physics-guided spatial temporal graph convolutional network (FPG-STGCN) to fast solve unit commitment (UC). Firstly, STGCN is tailored to parameterize UC. Then, few-shot physics-guided learning scheme is proposed. It exploits few typical UC solutions yielded via commercial optimizer to escape from local minimum, and leverages the augmented Lagrangian method for constraint satisfaction. To further enable both feasibility and continuous relaxation for integers in learning process, straight-through estimator for Tanh-Sign composition is proposed to fully differentiate the mixed integer solution space. Case study on the IEEE benchmark justifies that, our method bests mainstream learning ways on UC feasibility, and surpasses traditional solver on efficiency.
